This is a fantastic technique. I'll be doing this on portraits, too! Thanks, George.
Thanks John, I am really happy with this effect.
George
George, nice job turned out pretty well!!!
Rich
Thanks Rich, this really was a spin of thought while I was doing the 4th of July card. I am very happy with how it turned out. It has a real nice old book illustration look to it.

Is there a list of steps (handout) to use when using this technique? Or do I just need to keep referring back to the presentation?
Hi Donald, sorry, no list of steps.
George
Love this effect. Is it possible to do this in PS Elements?
Hi, sure, with a couple of minor changes. The convert to B&W tool is different, so in Photoshop Elements choose the Newspaper setting. Also PSE does not have the Vibrancy tool so use Hue/Saturation instead and boost the Saturation. Aside from that everything else should be the same.
George
How To Gurus Thank you so much George, I am definitely going to use this technique.
what version of Photoshop are you using for this tutorial, please? I tried it in PSP2020 but some of the filter settings were different - there was no way to opt for roundness/squareness
This video was recorded in Photoshop CC 2018, I should go back and revisit this for the current version and for Photoshop Elements. I'll put it on my suggested list.
I can't convert to black and white
Two ways to do this, either use the Black and White conversion tool, or use Hue/Saturation and set the saturation all the way to the left.
Thank you for this tutorial. I have been trying to find someone to instruct me how to turn my photos into sketches for a long time. I have tried others with poor results. I followed along with your tutorial and got what I was looking for the first time. Hi Carey, great job! Nice use of my colored pencil sketch technique.
George
Great job, George. I had to tweak it a little for PSE, but came up with reasonable (for want of a better word!) results. If you're interested I copied the files to Dropbox and also included the original images - tinyurl.com/y98dxehe. I used the Hue/Saturation layer adjustment in place of Vibrance and at the end used Multiply to enhance the colours a bit more. Maybe there is a better way! Many thanks again.
Thanks Peter, great job. I especially like Horsham - East Street - sketch.jpg, that one really works well with the technique.
I am currently re-reading HG Wells War of the Worlds and sorry to say your whole area gets destroyed by the Martians.
George
Thanks, George. I was pretty pleased with how that one turned out.
I thought there was something odd about things recently. Actually we have had 11 earthquakes in the Horsham area over the past few weeks. Minor ones, admittedly, but a cause for concern.. At this rate the Martians needn't put themselves out too much!
Hi Peter, have you checked out Horsell Common near Woking recently? That's where the Martians first landed. Didn't know you even had earthquakes in England. Of course I am living basically in earthquake central in Southern California, luckily nothing big since the mid 90's but that one took out dozens of buildings around here and cracked the concrete foundation in half of the house I am currently living in (its been fixed of course). We get one or two good jolts here every year, unless something breaks we ignore them.
George
No, don't think so, although Maggie and I worked for an organisation only a few miles from Horsell - a 65 mile round trip from home, a fair bit of it on the biggest car park in Britain, the M25 motorway. I do NOT miss that journey at all!
As to the earthquakes, they've all been minor, no more than 3 on Richter, but the number and frequency has prompted an investigation into why it's happening. There has been some drilling near Gatwick Airport, for hydrocarbon, but it's too early to say that that is the cause.
