#15 First Cut With Alaskan Chainsaw Mill and Beam Cutter

- I start making lumber from our property for the first time. Cutting a log first with a beam cutter and then with the chainsaw mill for our future tractor shed.
This is the best video for what I'm wanting to do(just beams mainly). Thx so much!
I forgot to thank this guy for all the effort. Its easy to armchair quarterback. Just one more thing...keeps eyes open for free old aluminum ladders that aren't bent to s**t. Esoecially long ones. Pre-drilled holes, cutting pieces off at paired and different heights make for "bridges" that have allowed me to use just the "beam cutter" he used to start the project. Made many a board as well. Its all about the set up and PAYING ATTENTION. Thanks again and ,please, everyone be safe and well.

I'm sure you figured this out by now but for people watching you could screw some short boards to the front and back of the log and let the 2x4's rest on that which would let you get close to the edge without relying on the timbertuff device's lateral adjustment. Great video - thanks!

I've cut many 1st cuts using an aluminum ladder w/ wedges & nail down straps on 3 rungs. Make sure the nails are not in the cut. I also bang wood wedges every couple of feet, keeps the "Rip Chain" from binding. Get a rip chain. Cuts best w/ max oil flow.

I didn't notice much difference in speeds between the chains. Rip chain is a cleaner cut.
Nice job !!! The guys in the 1800s used to cut those by hand with a two man hand saw. !!!!!

Lumber looks great
good illustration of what is possible. I think for rough cut lumber, the 2x4 mill is adequate. Several 5” lag screws thru the 2x4 would secure the board square for the important first cut. Don’t force the chainsaw, sharpen the chain to cut noodles, not sawdust. It’s all in the filing…

That 2nd cut was like cutting granite. Your going to have to be good at sharpening chainsaw blades. Nice boards 👌
tim prater, chainsaws dont have blades. If you arent aware of this, how can you suggest what he needs? Its a chain on a bar. If he has troubles cutting/slabbing, its usually due to too high rakers.
To let you know it's call a chain and a bar not a blade
instead of using wood 2x4 think about 4" 14 ga C channel red iron comes in 20' , light, stiff and easy to cut to length and it's straight, drill some holes for attachment screws to log, just a thought, i build steel buildings and chainsaw a lot of wood, good video thanx

Looks like the TimberTuff is designed to run on a 2×4 which is only 3 1/2" wide. But a steel stud or box beam of some type would be Ideal.
With the first one, try taking multiple passes making shallow cuts, taking the full thickness in one pass is, as you found out, too much work for the saw.

no its not. ive slabbed a few logs with my regular full house chain. not an issue at all. nice clean cuts. the benefit is that with a ripping chain the saw does not need to work as much cause it does not bite down as hard in the wood. but my 070 deals with it just fine.

@@servanttofriend8481 yes it can. but like i said a ripping chain makes the saw work less cause it bites down less. if you have a ripping chain, use it. if not, use your regular chain (or skip chain but is slower)

I miss it after four months of winter can’t imagine going years. When the mosquitos start coming out I may sing a different tune though.
Maybe next time square up 3 sides of your log before you cut your boards so your board cuttings will not have as much wood to cut through. Unless you want them wide for drying purposes . I am in the Philippines here now and everything here is cut free hand and by eye. We just had a SUPER TYPHOON recently and there is lots of trees being cut for lumber. Lots of termites here so to me wood is only temporary. Good video thanks....
If you payed the logs on their side and notched them you would have saved the extra building of the cages to hold them. Additionally you could have rolled them to where you needed them and no had to lift the long log you’re working on as high. Just my input. Thanks for the video.

Did anyone else chuckle a little when he mentioned he didn't have any wedges? He has saws, 2x6's, 2x4's, im assuming an axe and likely some tools to support this whole project...plus a big tree. I see a million wedges!
Hello, new to your channel. I like to watch all the wood working stuff. Only on issue, and this is the first video I have watched. But honestly I am having a very hard time with the sound and talking. Constantly having to raise and lower the volume. If I can’t hear you speaking, I have to raise the volume. If you are sawing, I get blasted and have to lower the volume. I know this was 3 years ago and hopefully you have figured out how to video with constant sound. I will continue to wAtch as long as the video sound gets better.
Another thigh to think about is unless you need the boards so long, cut the log to the max length needed. This will allow the slabs to be more manageable too.

I bought a beam maker. I wasn't happy and barrowed an alaskan. Used it on a bunch of stuff for a log cabin I'm building. I have a couple vids. I used a ladder. I drilled holes in the rungs to screw it down.
The ripping chain made flatter cuts. I didn't find it faster.

I wish you would've shown the TimberTuff a bit more. That top cut didn't actually look too good when you had the log up on the horses. Granberg makes a top mount cutter that looks more stable. Btw, great looking little place you have there. Cheers
The timber tough works great. Especially for the top cut And if you take 2-3 passes for Wider logs it gives you decent product

If you do this again and decide you want to roll the log, hammer a 2x4 on each end and you and a buddy can turn the log as though using a steering wheel.

I thought you were a poor guy living out in the woods with DIY poor mans products and then you drive up with a $50 grand Kubota with log claws just to turn the log over! You can probably afford a sawmill.
I thought about buying a sawmill but decided it was overkill at this point for what I want it for. My end goal is to move on my property and live a simpler life and we are taking steps toward that, one of those was to buy a tractor with loader which will help with all kinds of tasks besides turning logs over, haha.

I would think logic and basic math skills would tell anyone that if you spend money you have less of it... I too have a $50K Kubota. The thing to remember is that the Kubota is a need and can literally do a thousand different tasks. A chainsaw mill? Not so much.

It would be a lot quicker if you lay those logs flat on there sides and put a v notch on the top it would save you on time and the lumber

On top of that the music he added later, so if you turned up your volume you got your eardrums blown out when the music kicked in.

10 min for 1 slab? should take 3, u have to sharp the chain for every other log. takes 5 min ;-) Good work though!!
u.e form I was using a brand new ripping chain but since it was my first cut it was probably due to lack of experience

You should be pushing the saw not pulling it, you trip and there goes your leg and your out there alone.

Another tip. My level is 2 inches wide. Stick it in between the bar and tighten. Check both sides.
One inch I used my square. Handy enough.
To start off level, start at an angle to get both front and back to go up on the cut. When you get to the end, go off at an angle. Try and cut as long as you can with the front and back still on the log.
You will eat up gas for sure. Lol.
Can't hear you drill was louder than you were talking.
Get rid of that ripping chain. You're cuts will be faster and smoother.
Interested in your point, are you using a normal 30 degree angle.

I reckon you are so far off the real deal here with your expensive tractor to turn the log, the beauty of an Alaskan mill is the ability to saw logs at minimal expense and the added bonus of a lot of physical work. I can get a way better first cut than this with homemade end log jigs and rails,maybe I am old skool but the less expense involved the more rewarding the end result. I still enjoyed your enthusiasm however.
This video is showing me cutting boards for the first time with a chainsaw mill I bought so that I will be able to use it for future projects around my land. Some of them will include making posts for our cordwood house and boards for window boxes, doors, and frames. I can’t justify buying a saw mill though I could afford it it would not be practical. A tractor however for my needs is practical for all its uses. I am building my own house myself not out of necessity but because that is what my wife and I have chosen to do. Maybe it’s not the “real deal” but it works for us. Thanks for stopping buy and letting me know your views on our choices✌️
