Technically the guard never broke, I can't remember where I seen it but there was a description of the planet breaking up and while demons where running for the warp there could be seen from the fleets many explosions and lasgun fire going on even as the planet was sucked into the warp, the guard never broke they died fighting in determined defiance of the chaos gods and there followers to the bitter end.
What is more heroic? Fighting xenos while being a superhuman soldier in power armor that can regenerate or fighting them while being a normal Guy/girl.

Imperial guardsmen are braver than any space marine. It is easy to charge into the horrors of the 41st millennium when you are a living immortal warmachine, yet doing the same as a regular human requires a pair of real balls.

Tau is just guard but their infantry is way weaker and they use mechs instead of the Baneblade and they use Railguns instead of the Lascannon.

I've had a couple ideas for Imperial Guard regiments. 1. The 1,232nd Loift Panzer (walking tank) Heavy infantry supported by combat walkers. probably kitbashed heavily. 2. The tyrannic division. After the discovery of the first tyranid Hive fleet, Imperial Guard regiments that were raised from the planet Tyron we're gathered into 1 flotilla, and they were even shown picked recordings of tyranids overwhelming guards regiments and cities. It was thought that it would be useful to stoke their hatred and desire for Revenge for their Planet against the tyranids. However this had an unexpected result, *mutiny*! The officers quickly put the Admirals under arrest and took control of the fleet. Tyran used to have a temple of the omnissiah and there's a bit of a revolving door between the officer Corps and the tech priesthood so they know how to operate spacecraft. They are a renegade Imperial guards regiment, still loyal to the emperor and the Imperium but they have made the decision to disobey orders on Mass and search for a new Homeworld to colonize rather than throw themselves into the jaws of Hive Fleet Leviathan.
I like the renegade tyran division idea alot i would love if they hate swarm tactics and see it as wasteful and would prefer defence in depth tactics to preserve strength for longer

An Average of 15 hours on the front line is actually *really* good when you think about it. In First World War during April of 1917 15 hours of flight time as a fighter pilot made you an ace. For one to be in fear that means they have something to over come. Guardsmen being normal humans have much to fear. From leaving thier homes and families to fight Rebels, Heretics, and even xenos and monsters like Orks, T'au, and Tyranids or worse Chaos Marines and Daemons. Guardsmen have much to fear and the bravest overcomes it and live a hero or dies a hero.
Bruh imagine if a single squad of guardsmen traveled back in time to our time. And then compare their fighting ability, equipment, build, and bravery to a modern soldier or marine. Like how would they match up? Yeah the guardsmen has the lasgun but modern US Marines don’t have to eat corpse starch. The US Marine has a lot of bravery and courage and discipline, but can they compete with a guardsmen who regularly throws himself into the forces of daemons, xenos, orks and plenty of other terrible shit? I think it’d be really interesting. And then put them up against a squad of modern day soldiers. Have there be a battle or something, test their combat abilities against modern soldiers. No tanks, no vehicles, nothing except a squad of guardsmen vs a squad of US Marines or something. It’d make for a cool and interesting situation.

yes and no. many battles during WW 1 and 2 had a far shorter average lifespan of soldiers. so for the regular guardsman to survive for 15h is quite the archivement, considering what they are supposed to fight.
