Back in the late 70's this song was as much a part of New York culture as the subways and Central Park. It was played on TV constantly. Damn near brainwashed you into loving New York with this song!
This is why I think Tokyo's trains are inferior to New York's. I don't care how clean or on time they are, no other city on EARTH has a culture more tied to it's public transportation system than New York does
I still get goosebumps when I hear this anthem. Heard it in the summer of 1978 when as a kid I visited New York City for the very first time. The chorus has stuck with me all these years.
I was born and raised in New York. I now live in Hot Sunny Florida. Listening to this song brings back so many memories. I remember this song growing up, from the tv news stations to tv commercials. Now listening to this song as an adult...I can't help being not just nostalgic but wistful, it takes me back to the simpler times, the noise, sound, smell, busy streets, the cold, the night lights of New York City is forever locked in my soul no matter where i am. A city that never sleeps. No place like it. I"ll luv NY 4ever!

Who would know it would become an indelible part of my greatest memories. Great days. This is still my favorite commercial. I ❤ NY!!!
For those of you too young to remember, this song was originally created for the ad agency Wells Rich Greene, specifically to promote the Big Apple ad campaign. It was so successful that it was later expanded to ads for the entire state, before becoming the official state song.
I loved this song, and the many ads it accompanied. Although... I could have sworn it came out earlier than '77. I thought I saw these first ads in 1974. Whatever, though. I made my first trip to New York City in 1975 and fell in love with The Big Apple. For all it's problems, all it's ups and downs, it remains THE Center of just about Everything... I LOVE NEW YORK!!!!!!
This song and an accompanying movie showing all of NEW YORK STATE was presented to Hugh L. Carey, the then Governor by Colby Chandler CEO of Eastman Kodak at the New York State Museum in either June or Sept. 1977 or 78. I was there saw the original presentation and then apparently made a terrible "faux pas" by walking over to Mr. Chandler and drinking with hi. At Eastman Kodak people did not wander over to the CEO. At that time I was Counsel to the Governor's Office of Business Permits and the Director was Charles E. Fitzgibbon, chief lobbyist of EK. Great guy but I got dressed down the next day and 2 days later got a note from Mr. Chandler saying how he enjoyed meeting me.
I remember when they had this theme play in the national commercial with cast members of the current Broadway shows singing the theme and waiving to promote tourism. It did the job!
Milton Glazer was born in The Boogie Down, live in New York for over 90 years, made the iconic state symbol, and died in New York this year, during Covid. No one is more New York than him.

@@3dartistguy The song is over 40 years old, i remember when Gov Carey was in office at the time when they were seeking an add campaign jingle to promote the state back in 76. The mention that it had to be a native New Yorker narrowed it down. There were over 400 qualifying entries and Steve Karmen won out. In spring of 77 the 'I Love NY' sign and Ad campaign were launched. He Mentioned about how much he loved traveling upstate NY, with his kids and how he enjoyed the city life... It's been over 40 years, but he mentioned his love for the state which inspired him to write the jingle when he was interviewed by David Hartman on GMA some 40 years or so ago! I remember! You must be 35 or younger! I'm 53... Broadcast Tv was practically life back in the 70's...

GUNS4MIKE1234 This is about the entire State of New York. It was used by the NYS Board of Tourism for the entire state. It was used to promote the skiing, fishing, nature walks and sight seeing for the entire Empire State. I understand what you mean...that this is only about The City. But it's a misconception.
***** Every state has an official state song...as well as a state flower, a state bird and a lot of things. No, I thknk GUNS4MIKE meant the rest of the state of New York. Many people from around the great state think (sometimes rightfully) that too much emphasis is given to New York City. (This video contains little footage of anything else.) New York State is much more than the five boroughs of NYC. It's the beaches and shores of Long Island, the mountains upstate, the apple groves, Saratoga, Niagra Falls and New York is the 2nd largest producer of dairy in the US, after Wisconsin. It's a brilliant place to grow up and live, from end to end.
GUNS4MIKE1234 It is about the state! This ad song for New York, came out during Gov Hugh Carey's time... If you research RUclips, you will find commercials of the state represented. Very electric! Wish they could restore the quality of them, but.....
@Back row Bob Feelings, nothing more than feelings.... Like another Bob we all know sitting in the bleachers where you can't 'He missed the tag!... He missed the tag!'
You do know that this song refers to the entire State, yes? That the iconic logo is owned by the state tourism office? (And where are the lyrics about hiking and camping?)
Back in the late 70's this song was as much a part of New York culture as the subways and Central Park. It was played on TV constantly. Damn near brainwashed you into loving New York with this song!

Robert Vega ok who cares? It was still about encouraging tourism of New York City, Manhattan the states most populous city and the largest city in the world.
i don't love New York, but i'm quite fond of this song.
NEW YORK CITY IS BEAUTIFUL
Not just NYC but the whole.e state.

Hi, Greetings from New York.
I'd love to go L.A. one day!
FunnyVideoMaker77 dont go its not worth it it sucks in L.A. My cousin almost got kidnapped in front of us so we chased the guy down and gave him a good beating.
Oh New York, how I miss ya
hi @Clay4legacy - Cheers for the comment Bill, N.Y.C will always be a cool place on the world map, I'm an Englishman and I've only ever been once to N.Y back in the 80s but loved every minute, I'd love to go there again. Best Regards from the UK. Rob

Please NY return to this era when people had a clue, and the state officials had a clue too!!!
hi Steve, glad you managed to get a copy, I can't believe how many hits this video has had! It's such a 'feel good' sound isn't it. Best Regards form the UK. Rob
Without New York City There Is no America
Yay my town!
Uh…, last time I checked, the NYS line includes a few more miles than the city.
What does one call all the acres above the city?
So sad😢
I wish there were song's about the rest of the state.
(This video contains little footage of anything else.)
New York State is much more than the five boroughs of NYC. It's the beaches and shores of Long Island, the mountains upstate, the apple groves, Saratoga, Niagra Falls and New York is the 2nd largest producer of dairy in the US, after Wisconsin. It's a brilliant place to grow up and live, from end to end.
thank you!
GUNS4MIKE1234 It is about the state! This ad song for New York, came out during Gov Hugh Carey's time... If you research RUclips, you will find commercials of the state represented. Very electric! Wish they could restore the quality of them, but.....
this is a song about the state! They just skew things today and just show the city, like it's some entity by itself!
I am looking fo this on a 45 can someone tell me where in NYC in one of those old record stores I can find this song?
Our president is a Native New Yorker, born and raised!!!! Yeah!!!!!
