Ok so these guys: - Walked from the Brooklyn Docks across the Brooklyn Bridge - Walked around Wall St - Walked up to Little Italy and Chinatown - Got back down to the battery to take a boat to the Statue of Liberty - Took the subway to Washington Sq Park - Rode a cab up to the area around Grand Central, then across town up to Grant's Tomb - Got back in a cab, not sure what church that is, but they drove past it, all the way back down to the eastern side of Central Park and took a ride in a horse carriage past that obelisk - Rented horses in the park - Rented bikes in the park - Finally went to the top of Rockefeller Center. it was definitely interesting to see Sinatra play this role. His character, Chip, was a young, naive sailor on leave for 24 hours in New York with two of this buddies. Compared to the roles that I'm used to seeing him in, as a gangster or a rover, it was awesome to see him play this part. Gene Kelly was amazing as per usual!

They are actors people!! They aren't speaking in a new "yawk" accent. Sinatra is using his new jersey accent albeit toned down, which to the non new york city residents sounds like new york tawk. Gene Kelly is from Pittsburgh and might be trying to sound like a new york accent, and munshin is a new Yorker from where, I don't know. Besides if they were from NYC character wise, they would not be seeing the sights as tourists. This would ruin the plot!
@William HELLHASEYIS People from Northern Jersey still have New York accents. From the wiki page "The [New York] accent is spoken in all five boroughs of New York City, Nassau County (Long Island), and, in varying degrees, among speakers in the following: Suffolk County (Long Island) and Westchester and Rockland Counties in the lower Hudson Valley of New York State, as well as Hudson and Bergen Counties in northeastern New Jersey."
I just learned (via Robert Osborne’s (RIP) TCM intro) that Jules Munshin was terrified of heights. Hence why he kept grabbing onto his costars whenever they neared the edge of the skyscraper rooftop!
"We've never been here before" "Then why are you speaking in a New York accent?" There's such an infectious joy to this song, even if you're not from NYC
This is so much better than the broadway advertisement made recently. This feels real, the guys are friends, and all wording is a musical wording, seamless from song to versing. I love this movie! It was Gene Kelly's favourite, too! :D Here's a little bit of trivia... Notice that during the rooftop scene, Jules Munshin is almost always holding onto something, whether it be Gene Kelly or the railing. He was terrified of heights!
My favorite part is where they're on the observation deck of the then-RCA Building (now the GE Building); 30 seconds without a cut and you can see that they used some sort of lighting or reflectors as the three of them faced north. All in one take with a 360 turn on a location 67 or so stories up in the air. Fantastic and beautifully done.
I think it's awesome how glee helps bring the younger generation back to these classics. They are just so awesome in their own right and their legacy deserves to be upheld and passed on.
Iconic video from a movie classic. It shows many of the major landmarks of NYC at the time: Rockefeller Center, Grant's Tomb, Central Park, Chinatown, the 3rd Avenue El, Greenwich Village, Brooklyn Bridge, etc.... of course, it would be impossible to see all those sights in one day, but, alas, its a movie.

It's totally possible to see all the sights they visit in this montage in just one day, just not in the order they do it in not to mention what they do in the rest of the movie.
Is there ANY moment ever captured on film -- musical or non-musical -- that is more assured of lifting the spirits of anyone who's in a funk than this glorious trio? What, I wonder, were the people watching the filming from the walkway overlooking the fountain thinking on that lovely day? Did they realize that they were watching the creation of a movie classic? I will confess, however, that I've always been puzzled by Sinatra's lyric "Gotta see the whole town/From Yonkers on down to the bay." Yonkers is twenty miles up the Hudson from New York in 2019, which means that seventy years ago, when this film was made, it was even further away, since neither of the two cities had grown out to the points that they have since reached. It would have taken the guys most of their precious day just to get back and forth from Yonkers -- just like, fifteen years later, a matchmaker, a dry goods merchant, and his two shop clerks from Yonkers would make the trip in the opposite direction, and have their own miraculous day in New York, to the immense entertainment of years of theater audiences.

Fantastic song, covering all the landmarks of that time. It's interesting how eight years later in the movie "Funny Face" there's a comparable song, "Bonjour, Paris," with another famous gallivanting trio: Fred Astaire, Audrey Hepburn and Kay Thompson.

Hello, all you vintage, musical-loving darlings! - One of the things that I really enjoyed about this "moldie-oldie" singin', dancin', and romancin' musical (from 1949) was its wonderful outdoor location shooting in New York City. What a treat! Ta-ta! Hugs & Kisses 2 U all.
I love the way it starts with the construction worker (we called 'em yardbirds when I was in the Navy) singing in deep baritone, 'I feel like I'm not out of bed yet...'
+Timothy McKain the other "New York, New York" song was not Sinatra's, originally. It was written by Kander & Ebb (the songwriting team behind CABARET AND CHICAGO) for Martin Scorsese's NEW YORK, NEW YORK (1977), which starred Robert DeNiro and Liza MInnelli. The song was originally written for Minnelli for that film. It was later covered by Frank Sinatra though his rendition is now more closely associated with him than with her. Funny story: When the Yankees win at home, they play Sinatra's version at the end; when they lose, they play Minnelli's.
+musicaltheatergeek79 The Yankees were actually asked by Minnelli's family to cut that out! Now they just play an instrumental when they lose...Frankie is still the winner though :)
Somewhere I heard they changed the lyrics from "It's a helluva town" to "It's a wonderful town" cause they were afraid folks would be offended. Damn censors.
Yeah, and really, it's a WONDERFUL town, at least it was then. Helluva might have offended young women like me, not just censors...Wonderful was far more romantic, and romance is what the movie is about. Wonderful was more in the spirit of the times. Helluva would work fine today, but that was then.
Hays Code. They had to watch their language, among other no-nos. All Hollywood movies were subject to the Hays Code from 1934-1967, when the current rating system was instituted in the US.
'Jules Munshin was terrified of heights. While performing on the tiny rooftop during the song "New York, New York" the only way he could perform the number was while one end of a rope was secured around his waist under his sailor suit. The other end of the rope was secured, off camera, to Stanley Donen. And even so, alert viewers of the scene will notice that during the scene Munshin is almost always touching a wall or a prop or another actor...'
my work is doing a theater camp at the Woodlawn and the theme is New York and this is one of the songs we're going to perform this and other New York and Broadway themed songs so I had to look this up and I just know we're going to have a blast doing all the New York and Broadway theme songs

New York, New York, it's a wonderful town
Why aren't people able to move theatrically like this anymore lol. They are like human cartoons
They had to survive on natural talent and be triple threats back then!
Not always talent, but immense hard work. Gene studied as a kid
The movement is so funny .
New York is THAT way, man!
Love your picture. Is it photoshopped?
show stopper!!!
one of the greatest opening numbers in musical history.
I love the way it starts with the construction worker (we called 'em yardbirds when I was in the Navy) singing in deep baritone, 'I feel like I'm not out of bed yet...'
It brings tears to my NYC eyes. Especially the 360 degree pan on Top of the Rock.
No f'ing CGI in THERE... That's great stuff and great photography. Gotta love it.
i saw this live...with my acting class and loved it im thinking about buying this movie..with the original cast :)
2:01 This is an amazing scene showing the change in NY's skyline since this song!
BRILLIANT!!! SO MUCH TALENT IN ONE MOVIE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Twenty plus years later and I can appreciate “The Simpsons” that much more
It's a Hell of a town
YOUNG FRANK AND GENE! WOW! THIS IS MUSICAL HISTORY! GREAT VIDEI
One short day in the Emerald cit- Wait, wrong musical.
I first thought it was his legendary song, when I pulled it up.
Thx for the info!
+musicaltheatergeek79 The Yankees were actually asked by Minnelli's family to cut that out! Now they just play an instrumental when they lose...Frankie is still the winner though :)
@@mckainentertainmentnetwork5116 No, it's much better!
Can’t believe I’ve loved this song for ages and I didn’t know it was Leonard Bernstein
New York is that-a-way man!
Somewhere I heard they changed the lyrics from "It's a helluva town" to "It's a wonderful town" cause they were afraid folks would be offended. Damn censors.
Funny considering the characters are sailors. Sailors are known for their foul language.
I had to say "helluva" out loud to figure what it was X-D

And even so, alert viewers of the scene will notice that during the scene Munshin is almost always touching a wall or a prop or another actor...'
seen the musical last week on broadway.... it was FANTASTIC
