  • it was a big repotting week and finally getting to the few that have been kind of tugging on my stress strings 🫣 and as i continue to taper down the collection in preparation for archie's arrival, it also means cutting down big plants that i've been babying all year like my florida beauty. i also answered some plant and personal questions, including the big one of how i feel like how this hobby will change for me once baby arrives. alice also makes a cameo and we get real about our feelings about how this friendship will also change once baby arrives. oh! and i also gave you a peek into the last ‪@northshoretropicals‬ instagram live sale, showing some of the plants she had available and a discussion on scaling her business and where she sees it going in the future. overall, a pretty chill but productive week!

My best friend had a baby 2 years ago, and I don’t have kids, and probably don’t want them. She was so worried that our friendship would suffer, but it absolutely didn’t. In fact I think our friendship has become closer. She makes an effort not to just talk about the kid all the time, and she makes sure that we have time without her. But of course I love her, and I really enjoy being an Auntie!!!!

I have the same stance about kids as Alice does, and am so glad that she is sticking to her desires. And have gotten some flack about it. I keep telling them I do not have the maternal instinct for human babies, and just never had the desire for kids. But you give me a fur baby and I'll mother it like crazy. ❤😂

Just wanted to pop back on and support your goal to remain active in the plant hobby and have your own identity outside of motherhood. I still have 100 plus plants, my handbags have NEVER become a diaper bag like everyone told me they would. And actually, my private practice I had as a side hustle for years prior having my two boys has become my full on main job. I actually don’t have enough hours to work as much as I could at this time. I learned a new musical instrument and have grown my passion and skills of piano/organ playing. My two boys ( 5 & 3…yes I had one in the middle of covid ) are my pride and joy and have brought me love and happiness I could never conceive of before) however, I am more than a mom. I have a career, passions (music & plants) and I damn well love my luck handbags. I don’t have as many plants as I did, and maybe that’s a good thing. I’ve had my struggles with mental health as well as someone who is prone to depression and anxiety. But being a mother has brought everything into balance as much as it has brought be the immense joy and love and purpose. Being a mom has made me an even stronger person than I was prior. But I will always be me and I think that you having these intentions is obviously a sign of strength in your own sense of self. I’m excited for you to not only have your child with your husband and go on that journey of motherhood…but also, to experience the journey of growth you will experience as a person who happens to also be a wonderful momma. ❤

Beautifully said, I could not agree more. I have three myself and I would never change a thing. I also have over four hundred plants. My kids are grown now but I have always had plants not as many when they were young. I never lost myself as some say motherhood does to women . There will always be haters which is very sad. You got this, you're a strong woman and you're going to experience one of the best things life has to offer. Enjoy the ride

I hate people that think just bc you become a mother means you loose yourself. Why can’t it just be another facet of oneself?

    • @cristyandplants
      @cristyandplants 6 месяцев назад +3

Perfect reply! I wholeheartedly agree. My life has changed since I became a mom, but the biggest change (other than the two kiddos) has been how much I have been able to prioritize my own hobbies and goals. I firmly believe my identity and hobbies keep me grounded and happy and make me a better mom. Plus, my boys have grown up around plants and are now budding plant people themselves!
      ❤❤❤

Mom of two little boys here (and hobby plant collector) and I just wanted to tell you that I think the mindset you are going into motherhood with is so healthy. Being determined to keep parts of you (in the plant hobby etc) and not sacrifice them for motherhood will in the long run be so good for your mental health and help you to feel like you still have your own identity as a person. And you should in no way feel guilty for making sure to take the time for yourself to still do things for you because that will ultimately make you a better mother anyway :) it will take some adjustment and rebalancing at first, but don’t be discouraged, and just keep ignoring the naysayers telling you otherwise ❤

As someone who has five children and 100+ houseplants, you absolutely need to hold onto yourself. You're setting an amazing example for Archie, he'll get to grow up watching his parents flourish in something they're passionate about, and that's incredible. You've got this!

I really appreciated how candidly you two spoke about Alice's reaction to you being pregnant (and to children in general). I adore other people's children (I'm a self-employed childcare provider aka full-time babysitter 😆) and love my job, but don't have or want children of my own. my brother has a doggy son, but my parents don't have any human grandchildren. Alice is the first person I've heard mention feeling bad that her parents won't have grandchildren, and it really made me feel less alone in this! so thank you, Charmaine and Alice, for delving into topics like these that might feel weird to share about ❤

I remember taking the motherhood warnings to heart. It was such a bummer. It didn’t have to be. Glad you’re filtering through it in a healthy way.
I wish people would spend as much time (or more) on the good stuff because there is a lot about parenthood that’s magical.
I loved the late nights when the world was quiet and my baby and I were bonding.
I still smile thinking about the little fingers wrapped around mine.
And baby kisses, first giggles, that feeling of accomplishment when you work out what’s wrong and you know how to make it better.
There’s a lot to look forward to. It won’t all be perfect but what is?
And you won’t lose yourself, I’m certain. You might even find your strengths (like being so organized) make it all easier for you than it is for others.
I’m soooo happy for you and your sweet husband.
But I do hope the nausea improves and the migraines subside. That sounds rough.

Charmaine, I love your realness and your brutal honesty! And it's a big reason I never miss a video! I feel like I am the same way and I've been told I'm too blunt. I feel like, at least people know where they stand with me- take it or leave it! When people are always smiling or always happy, I find it very fake and sacrin sweet makes me want to 🤮 I'm also happy to hear that you really want to make an effort to stay planty after Archie comes. I've been a little sad about thinking about losing your videos after he's born. Any way, Happy New Year 🎉💚🌿

As a mom who went through post partum depression TWICE (with no prior history of depression), what I learned from my experience was: 1) the depression will pass, 2) I did have to grieve who I WAS as an independent career woman and transform into who I was becoming as a mom, and 3) it is SO imporant to not lose your whole identity - I find it extremely important to keep hobbies that fulfill me personally as ME and not just as a mom. I now have a day job, a fabric business, and way too many plants! So have faith that you, too, can keep your hobbies if you still enjoy them AND be a great mom! Congrats!

Charmaine, you got this. I’m sure you will not lose yourself once your baby is born. Keeping your plant room is a great idea. Having it as a sanctuary you can go to take a breather and find your happy place is beneficial for Vince and the baby. You seem to glow when you’re there. Praying for a happy successful pregnancy. Please don’t ever let other people’s opinions get to you. Remember, it’s their opinion and you know what they say about opinions.😊🫶🏽 Looking forward to your future videos.

    ONE MORE THING! 😂
I love your thoughts regarding Alice's preferences, and I wholeheartedly agree. Not everyone wants or loves children, and that is 100% fine. Your friendship has nothing to do with children, and we are all allowed to have a preference.
I am still very close with my child free (and even anti-child) friends, and it has always been a non-issue. In fact, sometimes it's been healing bc they are a safe space for me when I need a break from the mommy world.
All this to say, your friendship with Alice rocks, and I know you are navigating this change in a way that works for both of you. ❤

About the concern of plants around your baby-I think until your baby turns two or three, they won't pay any attention to your plants. My youngest is one and she will hug and kiss my plants if I let her, they are all up high on shelves bc I know she will eat them as she eats my roses in my garden D: my three and 7yo just look and sometimes help me water but that is all. Congrats on your lil one!

Alice you’re in good company because a lot of us are able to relate! I happen to be an art teacher, but I absolutely have never wanted a child of my own. When I was a child myself I did not like other children and whenever I said I didn’t ever see myself having kids, adults would say like, “oh you’re too young to know, you’ll feel differently…”. Nope! Absolutely never did and people stopped asking me about a long time ago 😅

Mom of 8 children here 🖐 Being a mother is everything to me. I have 19 down to 2 years of age. I have a plant room and buy plants on yhe regular. Am i busy? Yep. Children and plants keepe from being lazy. I love it. I do all the things. My 2 year old still co sleeps most nights in our bed. I breast fed all of them 😅 Women were meant to do all of the stuff and raise a family. Do t listen to the nay sayers. Proverbs 31 shows a true woman who is a mother and is a woman of honor. You can do this! Its wise to get rid of the bulk and focus on the plants you love. God bless you and motherhood!

So as someone who has a 1 year old, bare in mind we live with my husbands parents and siblings so only have the 1 room, with 100 plants us and a baby, I have kept my hobby going without skipping a beat, I usually do plenty things on the weekends, or urgent care during naps.
Sometimes I do bits in the evening after the hubby has gotten home, showered and eaten, he then looks after casper if I need the time
Don't live around your baby, so many people sacrifice everything when you really don't have too, let your baby grow up seeing your passion for your hobby and have them look for a hobby of their own from seeing how much joy it brings you ❤
I heard so many 'there's go's all your spare time' 'goodbye sleep' etc comments, my little one eats amazingly, sleeps through the night and is the best little dude ever, like you said, everyone's experience is different, don't care what others say

I’m the same as Alice. I don’t like children and I feel uneasy being around them. I just don’t know what to do with them or how to talk to the older ones 😅 but I’m the youngest in my family and have never been around babies or small children much in my life. I’ve also never been that friend who has been very involved in pregnancy etc. I’m so happy for all my friends when they achieve what they want in life and whatever makes them happy is amazing, but I won’t be babysitting or going all gooey over babies. Now if anyone gets a puppy, I’m there every damn day and asking for photos 😄

Charmaine, you've heard from a lot of moms in these comments, but I just want to add to the crowd that says YOU GOT THIS!
Yes, having a baby changes our lives, but that does NOT have to mean that we lose our identity or our hobbies. I have twins, and although they are now teens, I've been collecting since they're young. You're doing a fabulous job at keeping the noise out of your head, and preparing for Archie's arrival. People love to comment on how much your life will change, but each mom's experience is unique. You and Vince have a beautiful partnership and I know you will be just fine, and so will your plants.
Big hug, and thank you for being so open and honest. You're truly the best. ❤❤❤

I repotted a very mature Glad Hands last night. It is crawling like your el guapo! I also planted in a long, black container. Placed it at one far side of the container like you did. It was so root bound! I'm loving crawlers right now. Bought some cool, inexpensive, rectangular pots at Big Lots.

Aaaw super congrats on your new bundle of joyyyy!!! 🐣👼👨‍👩‍👦
I’m a one & done mommy & I will say, life as an individual is still possible after baby comes. My daughter is my world & is the reason for me to strive for the best life ever for her. But at the same time, I still have over 300 plants, my business, & other hobbies, that are for me personally to enjoy. I definitely think your vision is veryyyyt possible.
Also - side note - I totallyyyyyyy understand Alison & I don’t fault her one bit for feeling that way. Before I had my daughter I was the same & is probably why I only have one lol ( my daughter thanks me alll if the time for not having siblings lol, she loved her life)
But nonetheless - I love that Alison is honest about it, doesn’t have to fake it, & you as a friend supports that. That speaks volumes for Y’all’s friendship in general 🥰

Keep doing what you love because when the kids move out you’ll be left with a lot of empty time.

This is probably an extremely stupid question.....given your constant problems with spidermittes, have you tried neem oil in combination with Dr Bonners peppermint? Sorry if this has been debated before, I've been exploring your videos for the last two weeks when I luckily stumbled upon your channel, but the amount of your video material is insane and I haven't come across it yet. For me spidermittles prefer to attack Calatheas, Benjamin, Asparagus ferm, or Fuchias and I easily kill spidermittles with this mix. However, it is extremely important to repeat the spraying, once a week for three weeks. After three weeks the colony is completely wiped out. By the way, I love what are you doing!

I’ll be doing my plant chores after watching your video. I’m trying to dodge the flu…hubby has it and I think my son is coming down with it now. My daughter left back for college yesterday, she has to finish working on her thesis for the spring semester.
Your soil mix looks a lot like what I do except I use charcoal chunks instead of biochar. I think I’m going to replicate your pest spray. I keep getting spider mites on my verrucusom. 🥺 Thank you for the video!!! Go rest! Hope you feel better!

THAT'S what that wide pot is for.!? Lolol. I have a smaller of the same one from Target, but I've just been setting a few nursery pots in it and just using it like a drip tray almost 😂🤣🤦🏻‍♂️

I turn 40 next year, so I’m that much closer to menopause and freedom from the dreaded “you’ll change and want kids. You’ll see” kind of crap. Some women want to become mothers and some don’t. That’s just reality. I’m still very happy for you and Vince. You’re going to be great parents. 🫶🏼

My gloriosum has reached the end of its Target rectangular pot. I was thinking of chopping the tail/leafless end and leaving in the pot hoping some growth point will activate, have you ever done that? As compared to chopping and propping separately and then adding back into the original pot with momma.

Keep doing what your doing. I think you're adorable, likeable and refreshingly flawed . Coming from another flawed human, that means al lot. If people don't like the content, they can easily move on. The sad thing is, some people find it hard to move on without spewing their unsolicited (and unnecessarily mean) point of view. Out of all the plant channels I subscribe to, yours is my favorite and the one I go back to time and time again. You're unapologetically authentic and that is refreshing in a time where all influencers feed you a made-up, well scripted personality geered towards nothing but views, to the point that they all start to look and sound the same. Keep it real and screw those whiney ass Karen's and their unkind/unwarranted rants. Move on Karen.

Are you drinking enough water? Try adding just a wee bit of salt to a glass of water and see if that doesn’t get rid of your headache. Not bleached white table salt but good salt, either Celtic or Himalayan…just like 1/8 tsp and see how you feel.

I have two kids (adults now) and am unable to understand that people judge women or men that do not want children. It's a persons right to not want them and I take my hat off to the women who can admit it and to anyone that judges them, you need to take a good look at yourself

Hearing Alice talk about kids and both talking about parenting. 😂 Charmaine will know soon enough, children are fully people. They're all different, and you're going to have easier kids and harder kids. There is no "know how to behave." You can do all of the perfect parenting in the world, and you may still have a super active, smart, highly sensory seeking kid who bothers everyone. Oh, parenting. It's a crazy thing that changes us all over except for that little tiny you at the core of your being screaming, "WTF AM I DOING!?" Suddenly (does not apply to dads, really.. sigh), you're no longer judged based on your own actions and achievements but on the actions and achievements of this other person. It's a whole thing. 😂❤

I’m sure people mean well and could have phrased things better. I know for a fact that I severely underestimated how much time and effort it would be to have kids, granted I did have twins. Also the ADHD and PPD kicked my ass. My husband and mom were very supportive.
Will your parents come for a few weeks? Not sure where you would put them though. Be sure to make time for rest.

Yup, I watch a YTer that I don’t really like. In my defense, I did like her channel when I first found it but, the more I watched, the more I realized I don’t really jive with her. However, I’ve just kept watching hoping and trying to maybe dispel my opinion of her but actually end up keep reaffirming it lol. Like, you keep saying how cute you are, yup, don’t like you, lol. Terrible, I know but I’m glad to hear I’m not the only one. 🤣

There's this plant called the philodendron findens that looks like an sp columbia (not a gloriosum, unfortunately but you still really love sp columbias) but develops fenestrations that make it look like a monstera.
