  • oh man this is a big video (for me at least) and i'm honestly a bit nervous on how it'll be received but you know what they say
    📣 YOLO 📣
    for the last few weeks i've been feeling SUPER overwhelmed with the amount of plants that needs to be taken care of, and i'm realizing that this just isn't sustainable long term. i think i've been justifying the sheer size of my collection solely on the fact that i'm a plant youtuber, and without plants i have no content, but tbh there's no point in having quantity over quality if i'm miserable 🤷‍♀️ so this week i finally did the unthinkable and purged 20+ FULL plants-- some that i've had since the beginning of my aroid collecting hobby and some that i never imagined i'd ever part with. it's been a hard process but also a satisfying one, and if you've been in the same boat i hope this inspires you to just finally do it and reclaim some of your time back! i also talked in depth about how plant collecting has changed for me in the last couple of years and possibly if i'd ever leave the hobby altogether one day.
    ALSO i finally announce the launch of my merch after talking about it all freakin year! mark your calendars because it's finally coming on 👻 friday october 13th 👻
    most graphic tee's in this video are from tropicsnarcotics.com and i'm wearing a size large!

    Though I agree it's definitely buyer beware when it comes to plant purchases and pests, particularly from private sellers, this represents a default state as opposed to the ideal. I'm concerned that you were too casual about this issue and that this could encourage someone to not disclose pest issues to potential buyers. It is, after all, the buyer who should get to decide the pest infestation levels in their home, not the seller. It is possible that someone doesn't have mealy bugs in their home, to use your example, and so would be justifiably upset to receive an infested plant. Since it's never "just one bug," they could be dealing with mealy bugs forever as a consequence of that one purchase. Emma from Good Growing recently returned a plant because of exactly that concern. (Purchased online and arrived with mealy bugs.) I appreciate the efforts you undertook to pest check and prep your plants, and I'm sure your friend is aware of the general situation in your home. I have no doubt that you're as responsible as possible. It's why I enjoy your channel so much. It's the irresponsible amongst us--the ones who most need to hear corrective advice--who would also be most likely to misinterpret things. I recommend more care in the future around this issue. Thanks.

      hi!! first off i just wanted to say thank you for sharing your opinion / feedback respectfully. i wish i could say the same about most people who have opposing views! in the same breath, i do feel like my opinion is also valid? i watched it back and don't feel like i made it seem like selling plants with pests is ok and never the sellers fault/issue (and if i did then definitely my bad!) but my main point and something i'm always trying to convey in being realistic in this hobby is that pests just come with the territory. and while getting ANY kind of bug even if it's a single one is absolutely not ideal and not what you expect as a buyer. but having worked in a plant shop myself, i know that some things just slip through the cracks and i'd hope that buyers give some grace to the seller (like communicating with them about a resolve) before immediately demanding a refund or leaving a bad review. having been a moderator in a large local plant group for several years now, i feel like it's so common for buyers (especially newer people in the hobby) to immediately want to get a buyer in trouble for selling a plant with pests (whether it's a single or full infestation). on that note though, if a plant is sold with pests and the buyer is uncomfortable treating it, i do think sellers should offer a remedy and not just pass it off as an "oh well" because that's definitely not cool either.
      anyway, i'm going to pin this comment so that my thoughts on it are a bit more elaborated! and i hope you can also respect my opinion on this issue as i do yours!

      @@hithere2468 Hi there hithere2468….I see some youtubers on this platform that are just selling absolute crap for plants and also have that “Well the pests are always gonna be “ attitude, which makes me furious! But, you should be able to tell the difference between sellers like that and sellers like Charmaine and Alice who’s plants are so well taken care of extremely healthy for the majority of their collection. Then, if pests sneak in then I would consider that an accident. If a viewer can’t see this difference then they really need way more knowledge about the hobby than they currently have. Just my opinion

    You inspire me to get rid of my "place filler" plants and dedicate my high light real estate to more interesting plants. I hold onto plants I no longer love due to 'loyalty'; have had them for years so I feel obligated to hang on to them. The only plant I regret your getting rid of was that big spreading longboy philodendron, but I admit as gorgeous as it was, I wouldn't have the room for it. Love your content!❤ You are one of my favorite content creators.

    hope youre finding the amount of plants youre at now manageable for you ❤ i also have been feeling a bit overwhelmed with my plants lately, but for me it was realizing i needed to be more thoughtful about how i display them so they aren't just becoming clutter (especially on windowsills).
    i think the new arrangement of all your plants looks great!

    • @unplantparenthood
      @unplantparenthood  10 месяцев назад +2

      i think that the display/arrangement of plants is EVERYTHING when it comes to the indoor plant hobby! at least for me personally. i know some people love that crazy jungle-esque look, and while they look amazing in photos, for me it's not really practical living day-to-day. i remind myself that the plants are supposed to be a decorative element and i still want my apartment to look like an apartment 😅 i think finding that "perfect" balance is something that continually changes (especially as plants grow) but i also find that it keeps it exciting too. i hope you find your perfect balance too!

  • @cristyandplants
    @cristyandplants 8 месяцев назад +1

    Charmaine, as I come back to youtube after a months-long flare up of the long-term mental health condition I've had forever, I want you to know that your videos are the reason I decided to not quit the hobby when I was very down this past summer.
    My plants got neglected for months. I lost like 70 plants this summer, almost half my collection. I had meticulously curated my collection doing hours of research via yours and Alice's videos and social media. I saw it happen slowly and I felt worse and worse about being able to keep the non-dead but still heavily struggling plants. I abandoned plant tube bc I thought I was done. But once I rode the wave and landed on the other side, I decided to take your advice that I have heard you repeat in all of your videos on youtube: you can taylor collecting plants to your space and lifestyle. You can do things slowly. It doesn't have to happen all at once.
    So in October I decided to try to rescue my absolute favorites and threw out everything else. And I worked on rehabbing them, one at at a time. I replaced a couple of ones I missed, then replaced some more.
    As my mental state got better, so did my ability to care for the collection. Today I feel that I am on the other side, and that my collection is almost fully recovered and thriving. I came back to plant tube and unfollowed everyone except you, Alice and Fern: my Essentials.
    Thank you for being so transparent and honest about everything. Thank you for putting out content despite life shit. Thank you for convincing Alice to come on youtube too. You help thousands of people. I am one of the people that you have helped. ❤

    I've also been thinking that I'm really over philodendrons and needing to provide a pole for them and how much space they can take up. I am considering limited my philodendrons to a few select few and then keeping the rest of my collection as anthuriums (except anything magnificum) and hoyas since they're easier to maintain sizes. Glad to watch your vid and see that i'm not alone in feeling overwhelmed and needing to PURGE.

    • @unplantparenthood
      @unplantparenthood  10 месяцев назад +1

      i feel like this is where alice is right now in the hobby! her climbing philodendron collection is slowly dwindling down as she's also realizing the maintenance of climbers and accommodating them in a limited space is just not the vibe haha. i totally get it, especially if you're solely growing indoors and don't have the luxury to just throw them outside and let them grow wild.
      also if you're looking for a sign or push to purge, i say DO ITTTT

    Isn’t mind them till I found one large “yucca” looking plant sitting in the middle of a whole bunch of other plants. It’s losing leaves left and right. I just found more. But I had a brilliant idea to soak a cotton ball in alcohol and fold it over the long leaves and see if I can’t clean off all the leaves top and bottom at the same time. I will not give up and let it die. Now it sits in the middle of the living room away from all the plants. I will win!!!

I don't have cable anymore (like most people I suppose), and there's just something paralyzing about trying to choose what to put on from so many frigging options since it seems like we have like every streaming jiggidy available. I want some background noise on when I'm toddling about doing plant crap, but I don't want anything I have to pay careful attention to, and you're amusing, have a soothing voice, and I learn shit, so thank you for the lengthy ones. Side note: whenever I rinse my toothbrush in the shower, I always think about how I'm rinsing it like a youtuber trying to get something in focus, and it never fails to amuse me ever so slightly.

      unfortunately her clients can't take the euphorbia since it has spikes and it would be a liability. and yeah after i edited this video i realized a care home probably wouldn't be any better 😆 in a perfect world my parents could take it home and plant it in their backyard!

      i believe that it contains spinosad which is an all natural substance made from soil bacterium and contains the chemicals spinosyn A and D. It is considered organic which is why it is used pretty heavily in organic foods gardening!

    the lechuza pon you have in your amazonstorefront isn’t available/out of stock.
    do you have another item link as a substitute for this item 😔

      unfortunately lechuzapon is almost always sold out on amazon and on their website directly :( you can try buying pon from variegatedplants.shop/ but just keep in mind it is going to be more expensive since it's mixed in small batches, but it's good to have if you're in a pinch! i use inna's pon and love it (just needs to be sifted since there is quite a bit of dust in it)

    • @unplantparenthood
      @unplantparenthood  10 месяцев назад +1

      you can just use regular castile soap! but since pests are (apparently) deterred from essential oils, the ones with peppermint or tea tree is supposed to work better. i've definitely seen the difference. i've been using regular castile soap for years and it really hasn't worked the way the new soap seems to be working.
