When I was a senior in high school in 1980 I took my Grandpa’s Oliver 70 in to my Vo Ag class. It had died while raking hay around 1964. It was just parked. When I got into it I found one of the governor weights had come off and gone into the timing gear, and snapped the end of the camshaft off. I was lucky that a neighbor had a 70 that had a cracked block that they let me take parts off of. I was able to get it running again so my grandpa could see it just a month or so before he passed away.
Wow, that governor was really toasted, not a weight could be found. The old boy probably thought the weights flew out, that's what I would have thought. Anyways, good job getting it running, still more may need to be done, but that's possibly a later video. Thanks Ross, enjoyed watching, have a good afternoon!
Again you're a good guy Ross . You know a great many things. Prayers to your Grandfather. When the governor went out on the Minneapolis Moline ZB, I was 12 years old and that scared the crap out of me. I thought pistons were going to fly out of it. That was the reason why when I was 16 I took the tractor to school and my class redid the whole tractor.
It might not be a bad idea to pull the oil drain plug and see what all kinds of souvenirs come out with the oil. But the new oil might be too expensive for a dairy farmer? 😂
This was another great video. I'll be praying for you and your family. The destruction on the governor was crazy. It definitely was a sight of sadness. Thanks for the video. See you later.
Flush the oil pan and fresh oil then a magnetic drain plug to catch any steel debris, the aluminum shavings will just have to hopefully stay on the bottom.
It is a 1650 OLIVER. Only the devil alone can destroy one of those. If it has problems, remember, the third time is a charm. Hopefully, it will not be dead. But the devil of farm machinery just might take aim at it and succeed. Ross to the rescue. Wishing you the best with your granddad.
Ross , it is nice they all can call you to fix them up . Yes the dealers are gone and most new dealers not want to work on the older tractors. Thx Ross
An old tractors usefulness is a tough measurement by the cost to maintain. I dont no the answer but im with the owner on rolling the dice. The best for your grandfather.
You provide a valuable service for folks running old iron!!! Keeping your family in my thoughts and prayers that your Grandad is on the mend. Sure a lot of variability in crops this year...nearly ripe to green as grass.
Another job well did lol. That seems like a good running 1650 other than the miss and the clicking. I wonder if the valves are needing adjusting? Thanks for taking us along on another adventure.
Hey Ross! I had that exact same thing happen to my C Allis. Was just driving along and the governor weights came out through the aluminum housing. I put a used one on, and have had no problems with it, and that was many many years ago. I was thinking of you yesterday, I went to the Geneseo IL show, and they had a very nice 55 EB combine combining corn. I was thinking that I bet you would love to have yours as nice as it was!
my 1750 did this it threw the weights out on the ground I looked and looked could not find a good one oliver had at least 3 different governors for them I took 3 different parts tractors to make one good governor they are like gold
Would dropping the oil pan to remove any pieces be a good option? Or at the very least change the oil in hopes that any pieces would drain out with the oil.
Ross, I bought a D-17 at auction one time, they said it had 'governor issues'. When I tore it apart had not one but two full sets of fly weights under the cover! Well, that broke the ears off the gear..... Like your customer I dug the pieces out and rolled the dice. Ran just fine for me until I sold it. Never heard anything from the buyer, assume it's still going today.
Sorry to hear about your grandpa -- hope he gets better soon. Never dreamed you would so quickly have a service call involving an exploded governor. There are obviously several different kinds of governors used on different tractor engines. I can only ascertain that that one is gear driven off of the timing gears -- that other one is mounted on the side and belt driven. I appreciate the cursory explanation but expect you will share more when you get back to the governor on the 1250. Is the speed control lever actually connected to the governor or the throttle on the carburetor? I still have a lot to learn. Thanks so much.
soybeans there look dry around here everything still green late wet spring everyone planted beans 4th july weekend then weeks & weeks hot humid sun stunted corn & beans weeds took over no matter how many times roundup sprayed 9.8" above average meadows standing water same with county road ditches im trying to cut meadow hay first now put duals back on yesterday
The only thing that makes this game better is that you don’t need a special edition to play with the other characters. See, I can use the auto suggest to.

Holy Shirt! I shud have proff red that diatribe before I hurtt the sand button.
😁👍👍👍🙏🙏
Thanks for sharing, just my stupid opinion, but whatever made it to the oil pan would just always lay on the bottom and never cause any trouble.
One week old calf at $500 plus. I'm sure they can find a little money somewhere.
ooh, I hear that 'tick' you mentioned, yah, needs attention I'm afraid.
