I don't like the old style of Western as they are steeped in unrealistic chacteratures. But modern New Hollywood Westerns are quite good. And three of the best IMO are TOMBSTONE, UNFORGIVEN and TRUE GRIT (the Coen brothers' 2010 remake not the John Wayne original)
Great reaction. Russell Crowe, Christian Bale, and Ben Foster are so good here. As a huge Russell Crowe fan, I agree you need to see more of his films. Cinderella Man, Master and Commander, and L.A. Confidential are all incredible films.
I always feel like Ben Foster deserved a supporting Oscar nomination for his work in this movie. Charlie’s such a scary yet oddly compelling figure; there’s almost something hypnotic about him.
He was quite accurately critiqued as overacting the hell out of this. This movie has bad directing. It doesn’t know what it wants it’s characters to be.
@@tempsitch5632 I disagree. They needed something unique that stood out in contrast to the traditional classic western structure, particularly where the main bad guy is always dressed in black like Russel Crowe was here. He was an anti-hero. Foster was the real villain. Regarding directing, this was made by the same guy who killed Wolverine. I think he knew what he was doing with this.
Ben Foster is so great in this. Hell or High Water is another amazing film with him - written by the same guy who wrote Sicario, which you should also see.
Ben Wade's gun is cursed in the sense that everyone who touches it (apart from him) meets a violent death. The cool part is that this actually rings true in the screenplay - if you pay attention, everyone who touches Ben's gun throughout the movie ends up meeting a pretty nasty end.
This was the first movie where I ever stood up in the theater, watching Ben actually lead Dan to the train. I've never had the reaction since. Stunningly powerful.
You do kind of look like Alan Tudyk. I don't know why people are hating on this version of this story. The Glen Ford version is great, but this one is perfectly fine.
"That's how you misuse scripture." Well, if folks really followed that scripture the mouthy son would have been stoned to death by his father very early in this film, and there would have been no retribution at all. Heh.

Ew, gross comment. You can tell a person you prefer the original without acting like their enjoyment was somehow “wasted”. Don’t invalidate other people’s enjoyment for the sake of your own personal taste.
@@mickyandrosie Cool, that's exactly how the commenter above should've phrased it, then. Chris clearly had a fantastic viewing experience with this version, so basically telling him "nah, you did it wrong" in such a dismissive tone is beyond rude and childish.
That is a Mayer of preference. My top tier patron who selected this one, clearly prefers this one and knowing my experience with classic westerns, likely this would be my preference as well. Full respect for those who love the original.
I haven't watched a lot of Westerns, but this one was quite the ride! What do you think of 3:10 to Yuma.

Hard to consider this in the Western genre.

He's a perfect balance between a devout right-hand man and a cold blooded psychopath. That's what made him such a great villain.

"Hostiles" is another good western with Christian Bale & Rosamund Pike.

Hell or High Water was terrific. I need to go rewatch that one again.

One of the best western since Unforgiving! ❤
This is a great movie. Bale and Crowe are excellent as usual but Ben Foster is absolutely incredible in his role.
Ben Foster is such a criminally underrated actor. You should watch Alpha Dog. He was amazing in that.
^i grew up^...I grew up watching westerns and this is pure gold
Another good western is Silverado. Definitely worth watching.

Two more Russell Crowe movies better than this one.
Ron Howard's A BEAUTIFUL MIND and CINDERELLA MAN
Loved a beautiful mind. I still need to see the other.

Very confused movie. Not sure what went wrong but I’ll assume it started with the script.
Ben Foster in Liberty Heights sure was better acting.
Nah dude you wasted it. You shoulda watched the original with Glen Ford as the lead. It's a way better movie. Pff
