@@bigneon_glitter Couldn't think of a better suggestion so I'm piggybacking yours bud. Fantastic movie! One of the best finale gunfights in cinema
Depending on where it's at, is dropping paper littering. really? I feel it's akin to a fallen leaf...in some morbid way.
This film is a re-make... a good one too. You should check out "Public Enemies" starring Johnny Depp + Christian Bale, directed by Michael Mann. Character driven film about the real life of John Dillinger.
The original 3:10 to Yuma is amongst the top Westerns of all time. They don't come to often nowadays, as that genre was really relegated to a very specific time in American history and Hollywood history.
You should watch the original 1957 3:10 to Yuma with Van Heflin and Glenn Ford, for comparison sake
An incredibly underrated film. A great cast, great musicical score, James Mangold who directed the film has a fantastic filmography. Cop Land, Walk The Line, Logan, Ford Vs Ferrari. He's a very underrated director
And Logan! Very good director.
Cop Land, my gosh, that and 3:10 to Yuma is criminally underrated!
@@jamesxiong6420 3:10 to Yuma grossed $14 million on its opening weekend and was nominated for 2 Academy Awards. Just because a movie wasn't released in the last 5 years, doesn't mean it's underrated.
@@shoujahatsumetsu yes
I agree. It's simply a lack of marketing and publicity though IMO. Even if people knew of it based of of the cast alone they would wanna see, it, but they don't even know about it.
One of my favorites! The journey Dan goes on and the respect he earns despite being pushed down by everyone. I love that it's the outlaw Wade who first comes to respect him and because of that Dan's son learns how strong his dad actually was. Plus the delivery by Crowe and Bale are magnificent. The line Bale says " I'm tired of the way my sons look at me and I'm tired of the way you don't " to his wife. Perfection
This is one of my favourite modern western remakes, right behind True Grit. So glad you checked this one out James!
Yep. Those are my top two modern westerns as well. And I also would put True Grit slightly ahead.
@@benjaminramsey498 yes you do, that’s another brilliant one!
Sorry but Open Range is a better modern western than True Grit or 3:10 to Yuma and it’s not a remake.
Ben Foster is one of the best modern character actors, in my opinion. Speaking of which, Hell or High Water would be great for this channel if you haven’t seen it yet
I second this, Hell or High Water is an amazing neo-Western (with an admittedly bad title). Another great Taylor Sheridan film is Sicario.
@@trol68419 And Wind River. Sheridan is a fantastic screenwriter
Hell or High Water is so good it's ridiculous
Pandorum
@@trol68419 I actually think Sicario is my least favorite of his Frontier trilogy. HoHW > Wind River> Sicario. All amazing though.
Ben Foster is one of my favorite actors, his acting is so good he makes all his characters come alive. I personally loved his performance in the movie Alpha Dog,such a good movie imo. Also amazing Emile Hirsh and JT performances.
You guys some sorta posse
Ben Foster is a Great actor.
Exactly the same… alpha dog was a very good film.. also loved him as axel in lone survivor
I only knew him from The Punisher .. and had a hard time taking him seriously in this haha.. But he did a GREAT job. Really liked him in this
Ben Foster steals this movie almost every scene he’s in for me. One of the most underrated yet brilliant actors I’ve ever seen.
I am so glad that you watched this movie, this is a really underrated masterpiece imo
"I'm tired of watching my boys go hungry. I'm tired of the way that they look at me. I'm tired of the way that you don't." One of the best lines in cinema, if you ask me.
You just remember that your old man walked Ben Wade to that station when nobody else would. That line is so final 🔥
As a person who generally isn’t a big fan of Westerns, I love this film. I strongly recommend True Grit (Coen Brothers’ version) as another western that transcends genre. And my favorite western, The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, is an absolute must.
Glad to see Ben Foster getting the recognition he deserves in the comments. Every film I've seen him in he steals the show. Much love to you all.
Dude, I LOVE this movie. Dan Evans is one of my favorite movie characters and I don't even really know why
This represents the best type of script writing. Every character was fleshed out, and every action follows logically from the characters based on personality.
Every character has to act in the way their character is written.
Ben Foster right in the middle of two TITANS of the modern acting world... and steaking everybody's attention every single time. Dude's amazing.
One of my favorite layers this movie explores is watching the son go from disdainful of his father and admiring Wade to seeing his father as a hero in the end. This was orchestrated by Wade perhaps because he felt like the audience, that this poor one legged rancher needed a win. While no doubt true, Wade definitely sees himself in the son and says as much. In orchestrating a different path for the son to emulate his father, Wade is acknowledging his own admiration for our rancher hero. A gem of a movie.
This movie was a remake of the original.
They were smart on this one because they covered parts of the story that wasn't in the original.
This was Lions Gates attempt at a prestige film.
Note Ben Foster does a really good job in the film changing character personalities in mid stride, amazing acting.
This is my favorite western along with 'Unforgiven'. I loved the very last moment when Wade called his horse letting the audience know that he was going to escape no matter what. I want to watch the original movie to compare them both.
I loved that. He was never going to give up, but he was happy to do what he could to help out Dan (including avenging him) before that.
James Mangold is an absolutely underrated director. Cop Land, Logan and 3:10 to Yuma are 3 of my favorite movies. He has a bunch of other great movies as well
A really good contemporary of this is “The Proposition” from 2005. Phenomenal cast and cinematography. And since you mentioned it, was also one of the movies the developers cited as an inspiration for the original Red Dead Redemption. They even got the director to make their pre-release short film to promote it.
Ben Foster doesn't get near enough credit, he's a phenomenal actor. I'm glad you followed the constant theme of morality because I've heard people say they don't like the ending because Russell Crowe's character "randomly turned against his men" yet it makes sense given the rest of the film. And if you want another fantastic modern western starring some of the last actors you'd expect (Joaquin Phoenix, John C. Reilly, and Jake Gyllenhaal) then check out The Sisters Brothers. It's extremely underrated and I think you'll appreciate the final scene.
I remember Ben Foster hitting my radar in Get Over It, then being a scene stealer in Hostage. From Warcraft, 30 Days of Night, Pandoram, Lone Survivor he just has the magnetic draw when on screen.
If he's in it I usually catch the movie on the big screen.
Worth checking out Fire Away music video by Chris Stapleton for a gut punch 👊 from his acting skills.
BRUH!! You used my *favorite* line as the intro.
“Even bad men love they mamas”
I randomly quote that all the time 😂😂
Oh HELL yeah. This movie is an unsung masterpiece, and Ben Foster's performance should've been Oscar-nominated, dammit!
This movie has one of greatest, most underrated and underappreciated original scores in Cinema history! If you listen to the score by itself it's an absolute masterpiece!
Another great Christian Bale western is Hostiles (2017) which is one of the best western films of the last decade imo
You posted this at 3:10, well my time zone anyway! Haha
hahaha bullseye 🎯

Fun Fact, that's actually how it is here in Arizona where in one direction you can see some clouds in the distance but they never get to you so it's bright blue skies over your head and in some directions you see small spurts of clouds or just no clouds, all at the same exact time of day just by turning in a circle. NOW that being said the clouds in the scene where you are saying it that have TONS of clouds like that behind the stage coach could easily be a storm heading their way or just be a storm passing by their way but not over them, I've actually seen that in my own time. LOL we even had one individual cloud once that went rogue on an early morning with just enough of the right conditions to rain, and that cloud was no more than 10miles radius!! Just a lone cloud out on the range doing it's thing while the sun was coming up on a clear sky day...minus the one cloud. For reference they are called a *'Rain Bomb'* and you can find short videos of them online.
Great movie choice! Happy Thanksgiving, James! Thanks for the great reactions.
The technical quality of this film is really good, but it is the sound design during that final running shootout that really grabbed me.
James Mangold is a Genius of a Director! Absolutely phenomenal everything he directed (Yes, including Knight and Day!).
One of my favorite western movies and I love at the end how they made the sound of the train into Bale's heart beat as he was dying.
Absolutely loved this film when it came out, haven't watched it in years so was pleasantly surprised to see it pop up on your channel. Great reaction as usual, this film was a good one for watching certain situations I've obviously never been in but being so relatable as far as emotions or responsibility or just our views on ourselves and how we're viewed in society/relationships. Glad you spoke on those things, appreciate hearing your take!
How the hell I missed this video?? One of my favourite films ever watched by not of my favourite channels?? Loved the reaction, commentary and review, man. This film is soo underrated, loved that you watched and enjoyed it. Jim Mangold is hell of a director.
My favorite Mangold film, and I love all of his work.
Both Bale and Crowe give among the best performances of their careers, and that's really saying something. Crowe, in particular, shows his genius not so much with the excellent dialogue delivery, but in the many moments of silence throughout the film. The lighting and sound design of this film are also extraordinary to me.
This one, along with "Unforgiven", "The Outlaw Josey Wales", and the original "The Magnificent Seven" (Didn't like the remake at all) are my favorite westerns. But rounding out my top 5 wouldn't be complete without a very under the radar and underrated "Appaloosa", with Ed Harris & Viggo Mortensen. Honorable mention would be "Tombstone", even though I think Val Kilmer has the best performance in any western, I think Tombstone would just be rather ordinary without his portrayal of Doc Holiday.
If you can get ahold of it I recommend the series Firefly. It's only one season, but it's a great sci-fi western that had a follow-up theatrical release film called Serenity, and I feel you would enjoy the whole shebang.
The 2007 version of "3:10 to Yuma" is a top notch action film dressed as revisionist Western. The acting is as great as one might expect from such an estimable cast. In the 1957 version Glenn Ford plays Ben Wade and Van Heflin plays Dan Evans. Compare the two films to get a feel for what a difference fifty years makes. Glenn Ford typically played the good guy, but there he played the bad guy to great effect. Van Heflin also played the hard-put rancher in the classic 1953 Western, Shane, so he's also playing with type in that role. The Van Heflin film to see a.s.a.p. is the 1949 American film noir, Act of Violence, directed by Fred Zinnemann, director of the classic 1952 Western, High Noon. Act of Violence failed to turn a profit at the box office, but its iconic style influenced so many filmmakers who followed that it might come across as cliched today because of it.
Tom Cruise originally lobbied for the role of Ben Wade, and it would've been interesting to see him play such a menacing outlaw in a Western, but Crowe absolutely nailed it in this movie. (Cruise later worked with the director in Knight and Day.)
This movie was so surprisingly good. I saw it on rental sadly. I wish I had seen this in the theatre. You put me in the mood to watch this again. 👏🏾👏🏾🤩👏🏾👏🏾
among the best of the revisionist westerns. Crowe and Bale and Foster were so good. The soundtrack is unique and brilliant. This sits up there with "The Assassination of Jesse James" and "Slow West" and "Unforgiven" as a modern master piece of the genre.
This remake doesn’t get the credit it deserves.
I preferred the original 50’s version with Glenn Ford over this one.
Yes, ten times this! The original was a thoughtful and lean story with a spectacular performance by Glenn Ford. The remake is just a bloated action piece, where you get to see every bit of unneeded backstory. I love James Mangold, though, but this ain't one of his best.
Thanks for doing this reaction! Great movie. LOVE watching the interplay between Russell Crowe and Christian Bale. Seeing those two talents working together is thrilling to me. And Ben Foster is the icing on top.
Thanks for yet another great video, you continue to deliever both entertainment and insights. as always, stay genuine and stay awesome... much love
Also Highly recommend the 1957 original with Glen Ford and Van Heflin
Yes to this. Glenn Ford at his best
Oh yes!! So frigging happy you watched this!!
I suggested this on your patreon last month, hope you enjoyed😊
Another great western is The Proposition (2005) starring Guy Pearce. It takes place in Australia 1880's
I had a knot in my stomach for half of that movie. Very tense.
I love that film, and wish more people would react to it.
This is one of those films where I can never decide if I like the original or this remake more. Both are excellent.
I highly recommend the modern "The Magnificent Seven" if you haven't seen it it's from the director of the Equalizer, and it's a remake of a movie which is a western retelling of Seven Samurai. It stars Denzel Washington, Chris Pratt, and Ethan Hawke, and all of them and more kill it with their performances. It's a brilliant modern western.
seriously, this is the best father's day movie there is.
he did it to impress his boy.
My friends and I were camping/Jetskiing, beer drinkin', partying at the Colorado River between California and Arizona, in the late 80's. And, we see some homeless guy floating down the river with pots & pans and bags tied off to him. We yelled, where are you headed? He shouts back, YUMA! We were crackin' up, because that was over 100 miles downriver. It was pretty funny. Yuma!
For a movie that came out just as the remake craze was really going to the next level, this movie had no right being as good as it is. Reminds me of Collateral in the sense where the plot is very simple but it has a great character dynamic carrying through the whole way.
Ben Foster turned in a stellar supporting role presence in this film as Charlie Prince.
This is a great modern western. I loved this film. And I agree...the sound design in this film is amazing.
Damn I forgot about this one! Great piece of film.
Also 5:26 I see Jessie's brother is doing just fine
I’ve always liked this movie, but James, you pointed out some really interesting stuff that makes me appreciate the movie even more now. Thanks!
That’s what it’s all about! Happy to have helped. Cheers!
I remember seeing this in the theater when it was released, and at that moment when Wade decides to run to the train with Dan at the end, as partners, I actually stood up for the whole scene. I've never done that with a movie before or since.
According to the director, while shooting the ending scenes, it got so cold they had to keep the train's engine running to stop it from freezing. It's engine chugging noise sounded like a heartbeat and it added much more when the father died.
07 was a good year. No Country for Old Men, 3:10 to Yuma, and my favorite There Will Be Blood.
Another great reaction. You said also watch the original 3:10 to Yuma. A friend of mine was an extra in this movie
This is a great movie for being that "why" person. I'm the same way. The plot is the character development. and when the character development is through an examination of morals its an extremely rewarding experience to watch.
"No rest in the wild west, come on."
🤘🏽😤
Can never go wrong with a good Elmore Leonard adaptation. This. Get Shorty. Jackie Brown. Justified. Out of Sight. The dude knew how to craft characters.
I’m a fan of Out of Sight.
@itzel Leonard wrote a sequel to that called Road Dogs. A pretty good read.
@@StrongStyleFiction Thanks, I haven’t read that one.
This is one of the best western remakes I've seen and it came completely out of left field when it released. I also highly recommend the 2010 True Grit remake with Jeff Bridges, Matt Demon, and Hailee Steinfeld. If you are into westerns then I also recommend 2003's Open Range with Kevin Costner, Robert Duvall, Annette Bening, and Diego Luna.
Damn dude thank you for mentioning that, been trying to find a movie I only had a single vague memory of from when I was a little kid and Open Range is what it was lol.
@@davidbowman2001 Lol no problem, happy to fill in the memory gap. Open Range was a great film and definitely an underrated gem that nobody really remembers.
I was a little underwhelmed first time I saw this. Second time I slapped myself in the face in memory of that time.
Loved this film went to the theater to see it and pre-ordered it on DVD, just to get it 1st day it went on sale.
One of the most underrated movies of all time.
James, Tom Selleck in Quigley Down Under! A western that takes place in Australia. Alan Rickman also stars. Both do a great job. If you haven't seen it, please consider it.
Really sturdy Western remake - right up there with True Grit - Crowe is wickedly charismatic.
Another good under-rated drama with Christian is Out of the Furnace (2013). With Woody Harrelson, Casey Affleck, Forest Whitaker and Willem Dafoe. Pretty good little family-drama/action/thriller. Thanks for the upload as always James.
Seen this movie for the first time earlier this year, goated film.
I saw this in theaters when I was 15. I used to think westerns were boring until I saw this movie, and now i love the genre. This movie is easily one of the most action packed cassic-style westerns. Just so fun to watch. Its especially fun to play before or after playing RDR 2
A bit of an underrated movie for sure, really well-made and interesting to watch.
This was in the theaters at the same time as The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford. Yuma was a more traditional western and Jesse was more of an art film than anything else. Both were killer movies that have since become classics. You couldn't go wrong with either.
You've gotta watch a much younger Christian Bale in Empire of the Sun!
This was the prequel to "Bone Tomahawk".
Have you seen “Chicago”? I rewatched it on the weekend after some non-musical fans commented on how much they liked it. It’s one of the best stage to screen adaptations of a modern musical.
Micah Bell was based off of charlie in this movie
"Clouds!" -James from James VS Cinema
If you haven't seen it, The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance is an excellent western with a similar character dynamic.
love this movie, one of the rare remakes that's actually good
it took me a few to realize Russell Crowe and Christian Bale were in the last Thor movie together too.
This movie is so freaking good. Easily one of the best Westerns of the past two decades, possibly even THE best. I don't know when I'll get to reviewing it on my own channel, but I look forward to doing so.
The Western is always the perfect canvas to explore morality - that's why it's so visceral
A great new relatively new western, brilliant cast and same director of Logan!
Both the original and this remake are great in their own unique way. I hope you eventually get around to watching the original.
Underrated film, love it!
Yo, brother James. You should check out the film “The 13th Worrier (1999)” it’s a Viking film and it’s a childhood classic of mine. I think you would really dig it.
Great movie. Big tnx for a reminder. In return couple of suggestions. Considering Christian Bale to fully see him start at the beginning and do Steven Spielberg's "Empire of the Sun" (1987). and on westerns front finish Dollars trilogy - Leonse, Eastwood and Morricone's "A Fistful of Dollars" (1964), "For a Few Dollars More" (1965) and "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly" (1966) and for fun throw in "Once Upon a Time in the West" (1968) with Charles Bronson or one of the first action stars and for mindless fun do booth "Young guns". And one more with fun fact: this movie is a remake. Do original from 1957 to draw some parallels.
I love noticing new stuff in reaction videos. The "this man needs attention" guy at about 9:04 is The Governors nerdy assistant Milton in season 3 of The Walking Dead
Also, Ben Foster is vastly underrated. Maybe its by choice but he isnt in anywhere close to enough productions. Hes great in this and in Lone Survivor. And I even vaguely remember some Disney channel teen sitcom when I was a kid. Flash Forward it was called........it sucked lol. But Ben is a GREAT actor.
Fantastic movie!! And one of only a couple that, IMHO, are better than the originals. 🤠
Check out the 2010 True Grit, for the other :) the soundtrack put its over the top for me :) 💗😭
Imagine the final thoughts of his team as their boss shoots them after they tried to save him for days lol
Thank you for this reaction!
This movie is such an excellent western character study with dope action and even better acting, Russell and Christian are S tier powerhouses and the supporting cast is deep too! Headed by one of Ben Foster’s coolest turns as Pinkerton hater Charlie Prince- if you ask me.
Other Western Recs
Hell or High Water - Killer performances
Unforgiven - Classic Eastwood flick
Appaloosa - More killer performances
True Grit - Cohen bros. acting masterclass
Fuck yeah, I love this movie. Ben Foster is so good in it
Also, a miniature pitchfork is called "a fork".
James, you really need to watch Peaky Blinders. I have a feeling you'll love it.
This film is a comparatively rare instance of a remake that I actually like better than the original.
This is an incredible remake! It’s a great film, with wonderful performances from the whole cast.
I would recommend checking out the original, too. It’s a really great story all around.
Great movie, thanks for this.
I WATCHED THIS MOVIE TODAY BRU ITS SO FIRE
