Last Days on the East Coast | 16mm Bolex Test Footage

- So... I recently got my hands on an old Bolex 16mm motion picture film camera. I figured I’d try to document my last days living on the East Coast before moving to the mountains. The footage is rough at times and now I know to always clean the lens three times before rolling :) Anyways, kind of a slower, different style video. Hope you dig it.

My god this was clean. There’s something special about 16mm, more so than 8mm and 35mm. The shots dow by the river and the grassy field at the end were sublime. Need this vid to kickoff my weekend 👏🏻
Thanks man! I agree about 16mm, it’s got serious warmth.
I realize I am kinda randomly asking but does anyone know of a good site to watch newly released series online?
@Jorge Rene I watch on FlixZone. You can find it on google :)
@Jorge Rene I watch on Flixzone. Just google for it =)
16mm, 8mm’s classier, more polished big brother. 35mm is the executive professional of the family, he looks good and he knows what he’s doing, but he seems to have forgotten to have fun and live life. 16mm and 8mm can clean up nicely when they want to, but they still know how to have fun.
I love all your videos. Every time you upload I think, “okay maybe this one will dash my expectations, and not be as incredible as all the previous ones,” but every time you surpass. Ridiculous.
oh wow. that means a lot! Thank you for watching!!
As a photographer and a camera collector, I find using vintage camera to be very emotional. It takes our emotions and memories back to what has been forgotten. Thank you so much for the footage.
Well, I wasn't expecting to see this in my feed! Excellent 😍
Thanks buddy
My god, some of these shots are breathtaking. There's a certain quality you can only get from 16mm that you can't get anywhere else, no matter how many filters you use in post.
Currently in the process of binging all of your content, these are wonderful love the feel that 16mm gives. You're an absolute wealth of knowledge and this channel is a gem. How you're such a small channel amazes me, can't wait to see your channel blow up. You deserve it man
Thank you so much!!! I’ve got more videos coming up real soon!
@@loganguybaker that's exciting to hear cause I was getting worried! Can't wait to see what you've got coming
Is the entire video film? The over scan goes away at 2.36 and the footage cleans up considerably.. if so I'd love to know how you got such amazing results from 16mm
I think the 2nd part might be on digital with a lut to look like film
@@goonaffliated7 Hi, can you please explain? So the part at 2:36 and after is not film?
I guess that Bolex Stuff is only until 2:40. Seems a bit underexposed. Glad you found again your tripod after that. Beautiful video.
Great film. Your last days on the East Coast should have included footage of all the crappy back-breaking snow shoveling. Thanks for the upload.
Oh it is so clean and minimalist. Love to watch this
I'm leaving the West Coast soon and am totally inspired by the serenity of this. How did you get such crisp shots in the second half, it looks absolutely gorgeous!
This is so great!! I just love the tone and vibe of the entire video. Severely underrated channel.
This video in particular is a huge source of inspiration for one of my current video projects where I'm trying to replicate an old film aesthetic. Thank you for sharing!
It's such a nice and unique look of the footage - you can't ever get this with a digital camera even in post. I love it. For a moment I considered selling my cam and buying a 16mm camera.... But... all the other things I had to take into account... Maybe later ... Maybe... Thanks for posting!
SO MUCH CHARACTER!!! Loved the footage Logan. Thanks for sharing!
Very peaceful, really makes me want to shoot some motion picture film haha
Do itttt!!
I agree but I don’t know where to get a cheap camera and film.
Beautiful stuff. exactly the kind of relaxed video I needed on a Sunday morning.
Thank you! Cheers
Looks great. Film just makes everything more interesting.
(If I thumbed down, ignore it.) Beautiful footage. 16mm is a great film format. I have seen 16mm home movies shot on Kodachrome by someone that knew what they were doing. Stunning. Sharp image. Gorgeous color. 16mm is great.
Incredible scenery and amazing shots on 16mm! Motion picture film is just incredible.
I like the rough footage parts best, this is great. Hats off Logan! Beautiful compositions of you walking through the woods...
2:39 Now that is really excellent!
I read your article on the Shutterstock blog that was posted in May. Thanks for all the great info!
Thanks so much!
I just wish I had the ability to film in this whenever I wanted, there’s nothing more frustrating than wanting to express something and then digital just zapping it of any emotion
The 4x5 shots were gorgeous, I remember audibly gasping in awe. Awesome video 🔥
Thank you so much!!
Love the peacefulness of it
Thank you!
Looks really good man, what glass did you use on the Bolex?
Thanks for the inspiration to release my new channel. Your work is so beautiful and important. Cheers!
Beautiful work. I'm glad I was able to come across this.
Are you telling me that from 2:37 onward you're still shooting on the Bolex?
How is it that it gets so much more clear at the end? Did you use a different film stock?
Well done mate. Each video is just quality!
Thanks man!
Beautiful footage and music selection.
so good!!! wish you nothing but the best in the mountains
Thank you!
Breathtaking
This is really beautiful. Thanks for sharing.
Really like it. Do you change film stock at 2:37 And is the last part scanned different. Crazy clean.
I would also like to know why it gets so much cleaner at 2:37
I hate working with movie film but there’s just something timeless about it.
Why does the video quality change to one hundred times more beautiful at 2:36 compared to before? Can somebody please explain?? Thank you.
Love this. About to buy one of these.
This is as good as it gets, dog
can't believe i haven't seen your stuff before right now. sad to hear youre leaving new york. have been thinking about ideas for 16mm and this really inspires me to jsut pulll the trigger on renting a bolex and going for it......now i'm jsut gonna go dive into your film photography work
Thanks so much! Do itttt pull the trigger! Let me know how it goes
Logan Baker for sure man look out for it on my Instagram! @matthewmaffei_
Just beautiful, sir.
Thank you sir :)
After 2.36 on the video. It felt digital. It is sharp and precise
Very moody. Did you use a 85B Filter on the 500T?
For this one I actually just tweaked the color temperature in post. I'm about to finish a video though where I compare the 85B filter to post-correction. Stay tuned!
awesome! second half was also recorder with the Bolex? thanks! 2:38
What font is at the beginning?
let me know if you find it
this video was beautiful.
Hey man could you share what lens you used with the Bmpcc4k here? Assuming it is the bmpcc4k from about 2:40. Great videos and amazing shots! Subscribed!
Thanks man, for this one I used a 25mm slr magic hyperprime - I’m about to start working on a video where I talk about gear/settings/post!
just to get it correct. all of it was filmed with a Rolex 16mm? and then the photos were taken with a different camera, yes? :)
That 2nd half of the film WOW......so clean! How come so different than the 1st half? Where did you process and scan it? How about the color correcting?
The 2nd half of the video is digital footage, it's no longer 16mm film ! It took me a few seconds to realize. But he actually included a link to show which digital camera he used.
@@carnetsde16 well that sucks then, he could have made that clear.
beautiful film
Where did you source the music I'd love to know who the artist is.
Hello! What video editor do you use? Do you know any free ones that have an easy to understand interface and yet good features? (p.s. I read your article and it was really helpful! I wish you luck with this channel🌼)
Hey there! I use DaVinci Resolve! There is a free version and I’ll actually be covering my entire workflow in a video coming up.
@@loganguybaker Resolve is the best! Was the title at the beginning done digitally?
There doesn’t seem to be a flicker? Is this 16mm or a film simulation…?
The final sequence is obviously digital. Initially, when you first see it, it looks striking with more details and higher contrast (than the film part). But, as digital always is, it falls on you without leaving the least emotional impression.
That's what I'm wondering. There's no way that was film. I'm happy to be proven wrong, but it seems highly unlikely.
@@casonbmx Actually, after a second look at it, it seems that the whole thing is digital, first and second part. The first part was graded with a film simulation software.
@@casonbmx Just watched the film on my tv and i had to turn my laptop on to ask about the transition at 2m 37s ,sorry i cant cant agree with film admirers i far prefer it after 2m 37.
Great!
Beautiful
What is the song name and artist??
The 16mm test footage section was well done but the video portion should have been left out
Really like the music. What artist is it?
The matte opening is for 35mm
Long live film
what changes at 2:36? lenses, film stock?
The final part looks amazing, why?
it's simulated film look. Shot on BMPCC 4K
What version of the H16 did you use? (Rex, Non-Rex, ect)
Oh nevermind I saw your Instagram link. You used a REX 1
Beautiful music.
this gives me Will Darbyshire vibes in the best way
Thank you!!
What is the aspect ratio? Is it closer to 4:3 for regular 16?
Very Nicely made Film 👍😀
Vision 3 film was perfect, i will have to try this film 👍
What was the film in 5x4?
what was the name of the music used?
Hey buddy great video! what lab did you use to develop and scan 16mm ?
I'm surprised. This does not look like Bolex footage. It's very very sharp, actually looks more like DSLR graded etc.
Awesomeeee!!!!
Film camera have noise??
shouts to Quincy Street
what lens are you using?
What’s the music u used in this video?
SO FUCKING GOOD
Very nice... moody.
Gives me memories so much memories mate, so unique style OLDSCHOOL haha
What do you think guys you have the same view with mine ?? Its like somehow you respect the nature and at the sametime you want to live that moments again and again...
How do you determine focusing?
Why is the last half digital?
Pretty gf awesome film.
Which model h16 is was this shot on? RX5?
Can you share how much the cost was for the film 🎞 rolls for this 6 minute video?
Currently working on a video where I break everything down for 16mm footage! Coming Soon!
Amazing footage, what lens did you use?
For the 16mm footage I used a 24mm Canon FD for some of it and an old telephoto that it came with.
@@loganguybaker How you get a Canon FD on the Bolex?
@@SchroderPhotography C-mount to FD adapter would do.
my blood pressure got back to normal after watching this video🆒
haha good!!
Was this processed In 4K?
Nope. 2K!
song ?
no one Is as cool as the hipster who shot this..
Great but not all in 16mm...
fake digital
