How Not to Shoot 16mm | Using a Bolex
Просмотров 39 тыс.3 года назад
In today's episode, I tell the tragic story of how I completely screwed up 3 rolls of 16mm film. Due to a loose pressure plate (I think) the film came back super distorted. This is a little different than my usual videos but I had to close the door on this video and be done with it. I hope you enjoy my suffering! If you're interested in learning how to shoot 16mm, check out these videos below! ...

Taking a Photo Trip to Monument Valley and Arches National Park
Просмотров 15 тыс.3 года назад
Monument Valley is about 8.5 hours away from my house, so I figured why not take the newly acquired Hasselblad Xpan, the Mamiya 7, and a few rolls of Portra 400 and Ektar 100. I shot about three rolls of film and just kind of drove around, waiting for good light. I definitely want to return once the seasons change. Anyways, hope you dig it! Last Days on the East Coast | 16mm Bolex Test Footage
Просмотров 68 тыс.4 года назад
So... I recently got my hands on an old Bolex 16mm motion picture film camera. I figured I’d try to document my last days living on the East Coast before moving to the mountains. The footage is rough at times and now I know to always clean the lens three times before rolling :) Anyways, kind of a slower, different style video. Hope you dig it. Shooting Lomography 800 on the East Coast
Просмотров 14 тыс.4 года назад
I figured it was time to dive into the world of Lomography. I recently drove around to a few different parts of the East Coast, trying out the coveted (and expensive) film stock. Lomography 800 is a fantastic alternative to something like Kodak Portra 800 or Fuji Venus 800 (if you can find it). Hope you like the video! Fujifilm Superia X-TRA 400 - The Most Underrated and Affordable Film Stock

One of the cheapest and best deals around, this film classic proves to be one of the better films on the market. Teddy Beans and I go to Woodstock to shoot Fujifilm Superia X-TRA 400 for the first time on the Hasselblad Xpan. Then I cruise on over to Manhattan to finish the roll. On a side note, I feel like this channel is just me talking about how cold I am. Instagram - @loganguybaker - bit.ly...
Why did you stopped doing videos like that?😫absolutely brilliant work! Very inspiring peace of art. We are just about to travel to US. For the first time. And we choose Colorado…
The M6 is a thing of beauty but it's a light box. The film is key. An F2 is just as good as allowing light to hit the film!
Poignant. My wife and I have lost our grandparents and our parents. There is no gen. between us and eternity. But there’s one thing I’ve seen. When this worldly day ends we all return to our common home of love where there is no more dying and all our tears are wiped away forever. So be of good cheer and keep walking.
really glad this got suggested to me; you have such a good eye especially in the framing of the video clips. I kept wishing some of the video frames were still frames though I did also really like the shot at 3:32
That's some pretty cool experiental film footage. ;-) Just change your perspective on it perhaps... and edit it anyways and send it to experimental film festivals ;-) It looks amazing by the way ;-) Goldmine!
absolutely love the image at 4:24 but they're all fantastic. Thanks for your content man
This being 2 years old and only having 5k views in a crime, this is one of the most beautifully shot videos on youtube
I'm learning about Bolex cameras. Great music choices! I dig the loose pressure plate footage🙂
😡It does Have a self-timer! It's to the lower left side of the lens mount, and also sets times for longer exposures(see manual) A better meter head is the "SB" head, which uses a Diode centering system, instead of the analog needle.
I just recently made a trip to North Carolina with my mom to visit family we haven't seen in about 18 years. My dad's uncle and his wife were a huge part of my childhood, they were basically my grandparents. But shortly before my great uncle died, they moved from California back home to NC. Now his wife has dementia and it's progressing, so my mom and I decided that a trip was way overdue. During that trip we got to look through their house and belongings to see what we wanted to bring back before my great aunt's daughter sold it. In there we found lots of photos from decades past when they were newly wed, traveling the country, visiting other sides of the family, etc. All similar to ones in this video, they remind me a lot of my family. I got to see glimpses of their youth, of my dad and aunt when they were my age, and my grandma who died before I turned 1. I got to keep my great uncle's old film cameras, his leather work bag, a cap, and some landscape paintings they inherited from my great great grandma. I got to visit his grave and see his final resting place. Seeing all that history was very cathartic, and although I was only a child when I got to spend time with my dad's side of the family, I can't help but feel connected to them as I travel through the Southwest, and live through them by carrying on their hobbies, interests, belongings etc. I grieve not knowing more about them and our time together being cut short. I hope to honor their spirits by making it apart of me. I'm glad this video came across my screen and know I'm not alone.
Recente follower :), you need to post some new videos, i love them :) regards
You got an awesome camera but it is just a light tight box so it’s the lens & you that do what it can do as you say. F2 just make the task smoother with versatility. The cds cells do ate but even so can work but slow. Again, just a tool. If on most basic Leica beside the TTL, you’re external metering anyway.
This chanel is hidden gem huge treasure i found it randomly. I’ve seen all you videos phenomenal work good job buddy! i wanna see more short films made by your bolex 😊
Just stumbled across this. I think the "ruined" shots actually look cool. You could very easily use them as textural elements and cuts in another project, if you were to lean into it. Or heck, send them to me, I'd love to play around with them!
I couldn't stifle a chuckle at the 00:56 min mark. So subtle yet impactful.
Three and a half years later I've come back just to enjoy the vibe.
what lens are you using?
where are you? We need more of these kind of videos seriously this is what I search for as a photographer!
what was the song that played at 1:26?
Hey Logan, I saw this when you first did it. I came back to watch again. I could not find if I commented previously. It is so nicely done. Thanks for sharing it. Your grandparents were a huge part of my young years growing up in Angelo. I was very sad at the passing of each of them. Even now a year later, just watching this and hearing your mention of their passing was very emotional for me. I loved them both very much. They meant so much to me and are a large part of who I am and my life. Continue to enjoy your journey. -Terry
Wow, thank you for sending this Terry. It’s extremely touching to hear their warmth extended beyond our family. Hope you are well.
Wish one day i could travel to places like this. Btw thank you, you did excellent work capturing this mesmerizing scenery
Clean the gate and the film chamber. Tighten the pressure plate screw. Send the test reel out for processing right away. Got it! Thanks. One of mine is: shoot on a full wind, not near the end.
RIP 400H. I’ve just been through all your videos and they are all amazing! Why’d you stop creating?
You make great work of the Xpan in the city. Most people usually stick to landscapes as the easiest thing to shoot but those tight city shots were framed so well in black and white.
Similar thing happened to me, but I used the "defective" material artistically. 😉
i'm seeing this 3 years late but, i love my f2 and the way i lcame to love it is without that bulky head and the meter, by the way is totaly possible to be quick and have perfectly good exposures without a light meter its called sunny 16 rule it works all the time if you undestand what you are doing
yeah dude that one virus you heard something about one time, its gonna change the course of history as we know it
AH HA! Its been over 13 years since I ran a roll through my Bolex and this explains the results! Had always planned on having a better income to film more but it got shelved and there it sits. I am so inspired to go dig it out of storage right now and tighten the gate.
Your videos tell a great story, are really well made and edited and not only that, you actually make good images too! You could be the most popular photography channel on here (if you'd only post some videos now and then 😉).
Your images are so beautiful.
Mind asking how you attached the NF on the Bolex?
Thanks very much for this outstanding video! Marvelous! During the short test run with the open camera I saw that the loop formers were still closed. In older models the closing of the lid does not automaticaly open the loop formers. This gives also an effect like you got.
The Jurassic Park bit was HILARIOUS 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Why does the video quality change to one hundred times more beautiful at 2:36 compared to before? Can somebody please explain?? Thank you.
This is awesome sauceeeee!!! Amazing lighting on your end though (for your interview based set up)
Utah plus snow equals orgasm
Many things can cause shutter ghosting like this --- loop formers not opened; loss of a loop; pull down claw not engaging properly; not properly closed pressure plate; or a misaligned shutter.
This is as good as it gets, dog
