You get the tone right (for a strat ;-)) but I think Andy never played it this way. During Police time he played the 3rd chord at the 7th fret, and jumped to 2nd fret for the 4th chord. Sting was playing it this way too during most of his solo performances. During the Police reunion tour he was playing the 2nd chord starting at the open A string, then the 3rd chord at 2nd fret. I have looked at many ways to make it easier, like have a capo at the second fret, but it never sounds right. I know consider this as a stretching exercice... Thank you for this great video!
Why is that so important? Andy himself played this in another fretboard position like you have stated yourself. The notes are still right and you probably wouldn't tell if you heard this without watching it.
@@Texturas75 because without doing this you don't get the squeak that you can hear on the recording. Minor detail. It's probably more important to play whichever you can do at a higher speed, because it's a fast tempo.
If you watch video of Andy Summers, he doesn't hold the notes but constantly flows, only fretting one note at a time. It's much less hard work on the hands.
I have seen a video in which Andy plays the riff in the way that you said to be wrong, but if you watch him in recent live videos, he plays it in the other way. maybe because, due to his age, he prefers a solution that requires less energy.
I have fresh memories of that riff, but it is great practice song, either for the stretch and also for the unusual rythm patern. I think the sound here is pretty close, maybe bit darker. ps: I prefere picking it down, down, up. But otherwise you are spot on. On the original song video and old concert Andy plays it exactly that way. Later (on the reunion tour), he slightly modify it, not to go for 5th fret on E, but rather using open A string and then moving the shape up.
The police did a song called 'King Of Pain'. This is the 'Song Of Pain' with that 5 fret stretch. I've played this one for many years. It always hurts - even slightly!
Hahahaha Man! Baby steps alright?😂 I started using them in videos and surprised myself looking at some in the shop, it's already a lot to process!! Thank you ever so much for watching everytime, it means a lot! :) // Guillaume
@@ThomannsGuitarsBasses Just messing with ya. 😁 For cleans most of the time prefer Jet King or my Tele because I love that bright jangly tone. Those new burst TE-90s, OMG dreamy to me YASSSSSSSS 👍
If memory serves right. He has stated on many occasions that during the first two albums, he exclusively used the telecaster. While recording and live.
Little Feat did a great tune called Texas Twister, released on their CD, Representing the Mambo, with killer guitar licks. No one has done a credible guitar tutorial. Would love to have you take a run at it if you would!
The distortion comes from his guitar on board preamp I guess and also his guitar has an out of phase sound plus his bridge pickup doesn't sound as a tele bridge pick up. The pedal you use doesn't sound like the old mistress, try the mooer one.
@Christopher Tremontana This is not about "nailing Andy Summers tone". This is about hitting one specific song tone. There's not only ONE Andy Summers tone. This song alone has more than one tone (neck and bridge tones). Use your ears, not your eyes. Also Andy used many guitars in The Police, including the famous red Strat.
I never understood the problem with the spread of the fingers on this song, especially the little finger, there is an easier way to get the note E flat on the first chord, instead of playing it on the G string, all you have to do is look for it on the B string, it is right in the chord, then you just have to shift according to the same principle and that's it

you are right, a bit of pain to watch this guy
And also on the music video of the song he plays the B arpeggio up on the 7th fret not down at the 2nd
@@Immexbeatz you can hear the squeak from sliding down the neck in the second bar of the studio recording. Anybody think to listen to that?
▲ love the french twist on "flanger" 🥖🧀🍷
Technically everything has a french twist if I butcher it enough 😂! Thanks for watching! // Guillaume

Andy played the more difficult way early on but the easier way later. Check out videos right here in you tubes.

Have you done "In A Big Country"?
Because that is one heck of a sound...
Stuart Adamson was one of the greatest guitarists and songwriters of all time. Sorely underrated. RIP

Hahaha, good one. I guess it's the same for Every breath you take.
I saw Andy play an open A string in the second chord, nice tutorial.
In the early days Andy played it like he said how you shouldn’t play it but during the reunion tour Andy played it with an open A
Bottle up that tone! What about something by the Revivalist?🤘🏽 i wish I knew you or it was a sin ?
Have a great week Ery bodys 🤘🏽
I thought it was using the Roland Jazz chorus resident chorus sound .. It seems every kind of chorus mixed with overdrive will work..
Legend say, it was realy that EHX flanger.
greatl! what amplifier and speaker did Andy Summer use to record Message in a Bottle in the studio?
Andy Summers on a Strat? Blasphemy! Get a Tele ya hippy! 😂🤣😂🤣(you knew that was coming ... get him Kris! 🤪) Good job anyhow 😊👍

Andy actually played a Strat live on the reunion tour
@@tszegvary Shhhh! When he does Hit the Tone Jeff Beck on a Strat it will be all your fault! 🤣
He played a Strat at least since the GitM tour (and probably the album too).
I think he was using sss Stratocaster in the studio instead of that iconic telecaster.
Oh really? I didn't know that, thank you so much for the info! :) // Guillaume
@@ThomannsGuitarsBasses he probably mentioned that in some interview, but I couldn't find it right now
Well, he plays the Strat in the Ghost In The Machine era videos shot at the Montserrat studio sooooo...

Glad he only mentioned the importance of Andy Summers and Stewart Copeland in The Police....which for me is an accurate summary! Hahaha 😆
He has a second note recorded and live it sounds too. Which harmonized pedal
Does he use?
folks don’t sweat it worrying about these stretches. i testify that it was impossible for me but after few hours i got it down.
Can you do a lesson on cochise by audioslave?
Good choice 🤘🏽
There’s videos on RUclips of Tom Morello showing how to play that. Great song!
