Wow, great find. I've seen tons of beginner level recipes for various bioplastics and such that aren't waterproof (or at least resistant) plastered all over the internet, usually in the form of annoying listicles. This is by far the in depth reference I was hoping for. I look forward to trying some of these recipes out. Much obliged, and subbed.
Thank you for this wonderful and informative video. Can this adhesive be used for paper to stick on metal surfaces? Will it be brittle after drying and the paper may fall off?
Yes, I think it will stick to metal. Wood to wood, paper to paper is fine. I would be willing to try metal to metal. Give it a try, lay it on thick. Heat it in an oven at 200F for a few hours. Never tried wood to metal. I am building a greenhouse right now and I am using this formula. Check it out.
Well, this is surely the most useful video I've found about casein glue! One question, has any heating been applied to your process when stirring the ingredients for the WBUC formulation? Maybe on the hotplate magnetic mixer, or using warm water instead?? 'Cause I've tried that recipe myself and I was only able to get a sticky-but-too-watery solution, that remained liquid for days... I was wondering what could gone wrong (seems that urea didn't stirred as intended, some traces remained in the bottom... )
I did not heat. I only recorded the room temperature. It takes from 2 to 24 hours to mix, depending on how it clumps when it goes in water. I would say, give it more time to mix.
Hii sir, I am from Tamilnadu. Your slang is not clear to me. Shall you please list out the ingredients which you are used. I hope it will definitely useful for my project. You are so brilliant you found it. Thank you sir kindly replay
Thank you for your question and your kind words. This video is more about the book that I refer to in the link posted in the description below. I encourage you to read the book, as it contains all the formula I make. Here is the link, and good research. The book on this and other waterproof Casein glues, paints and adhesives are found: @t
The production of urea from inorganic raw materials was an important conceptual milestone in chemistry and is considered the birth of biochemistry. This synthesis showed that a metabolic product can be produced in the laboratory without biological raw materials, and ultimately led to the fall of the theory of vitalism.
Hi sir I have to ask question.i made wood white glue from pva+wheat flour+tio+ptf May I use your formula .borex.urea.casein. into my formula to be made Strong my glue and dry fast.or you have any suggestions for my formula to make strong and dry time fast
Hello Sir, I am so glad I found you. Could you please tell me if this would work with yarn and dry hard to make a lamp globe? I was looking for eco friendly and fire retardant and this fits those two criteria. I am just leery of buying the ingredients if it won't work for my projects. Thank you, Diane
Hello, this is really interesting, i am working on biodegradable material as a sustainable "fabric" for fashion, but biodegradable material is soluble in water and therefore i wanted to coat the biomaterial with a bio substance that is water resistent. This video was really inspiring but what would you use of water resistant coating for clothing which needs to be flexible and bio-based?
Yarn once was made from milk. Milk yarn dresses were popular and still a much sought after item on eBay. The yarn was manufactured in Italy. Look into QMilch, I think they are making it now. I haven't found a natural way to waterproof milk plastic, but milk yarn is processed similar to how rayon yarn is made. Rayon manufacture is so environmentally damaging, it is banned from manufacture in the US. Early days of Rayon fabric required it to be Dry Cleaned because Rayon wasn't waterproof. Whatever they did to do that is the same thing you will need for your yarn. Look up Viscose Rayon. Milk yarn sounds cool, but making it is not so cool. If you find a way to naturally waterproof milk plastic, let us know. That is the Holy Grail of bioplastics. In my opinion, bioplastic doesn't suit every application, but we would be wise to use it where we can and reduce items made from natural gas.
Hello, for a school project, I may have access to a very large amount of casein / dried milk. What would you recommend as a good use for this starting reactant? Casein based glues? Plastics? Anything obvious I could be missing? Thanks so much
Hey great video! very informative. I have a few questions for a project I'm working on, hope you can answer some of them (: 1) what materials do you recommend using to make this glue non-toxic but still water-resistant? 2) do you know if this glue can be used as a good oxygen barrier? 3) what would you recommend using to make the glue thicker but still keep its qualities? 4) how long do you think it can last in an outdoor environment? thank you!!
1) This formula cannot be made NON toxic. Use a HYDE or a PVA glue. 2) It is an amazing oxygen barrier. Superior to plastic. 3) Use more Casein. 4) 2 weeks if fully exposed in gentle weather. And this also depends on what has been glued. It can be permanent on wood, metal and glass.
@@GEOsustainable thank you so much for the detailed answer. do you have an idea in mind for a natural material to make this glue or a bioplastic waterproof?
Is this food-safe with the addition of urea? Trying to make a food-safe glue that I can run into a cracked ceramic coffee mug (basically, immersion in the heated glue for time to allow it to flow into the crack, then removal, cleaning, and curing)... I think casein may be my ticket to this. I've found another recipe that calls for casein, sodium hydroxide, and calcium hydroxide, but unfortunately it is not a "waterproof" glue, but a "water resistant" glue, meaning use will most likely see it ultimately fail eventually (tho, another batch and application isn't the end of the world)....
Thank you Sir for the great video. Please could you comment on the suitability of this waterproof adhesive to be used as a denture adhesive. Thank you for any response.
I'm an epoxy artist just trying to expand my knowledge on plastics in general, and find a safer alternative. I'd be nice to save to world and reduce my exposure to toxic fumes.
I have included a link to a free book I get many of my recipes from. I am sure there is something in it for you. Check it out. It is in the description of several of my bioplastic videos.
This formula is only water resistant and has some issues with durability. I have another formula coming soon that should give longer lasting results. If you are in a hurry, email me and I will give you the formula, as it is too much to put here.
I had to look it up. I knew Casein was and is still used in aircraft and boats, as well as exterior plywood. No other glue in existence can beat Casein bonding strength. Very high humidity can soften the glue, but will regain it's bond strength as soon as it drys. I have flown in the Mosquito reconnaissance in Vietnam. Those babies are fast, fast and super agile.
@@GEOsustainable I worked after school in the 50's in a caravan factory and they used something called urea formaldehyde, no idea what it contained., Why would it be superior to Aqudhere {?} or Bondcrete, PVA based glue, when PVA dries on your clothing it's like water based paint, impossible to soak out.
Nice video sir, it contains so much information. I also liked the link to the book which I downloaded immediately for further reading. I have some questions, you mentioned your own recipe (3th mixture) is waterproof and stays hard. But this hard, is it brittle or still flexible? And if its brittle, will adding glycerine it to become less brittle or do u have other suggestions? i want to use it as a leather-glue but its has to be flexible. thx
If I may ask, how water resistant would casein + slaked lime be as compared to casein + borax + urea? Furthermore what ratio do you recommend for casein + slaked lime + water? Asking for hardwood gluing project
Dear Mark, can this formula be used to make waterproof paint as well? What is amount of NaF to get more water resistance? Thank you so much for useful recipes .
Hello . I need your help please . My friend and I make a plastic from gelatin and glycerol ,we wanted to know that if we add these matrials to our plastic , they make it waterproof ?
You found it. Is this video I make a water resistant glue. Water proof would require Formaldehyde...not something you want to put in your mouth. Examine your task...you want to make a 1-use plastic, it does not need to last for more than 1 hour. Vinegar makes Casein more insoluble. Bioplastics are best suited for 1-use, ideal for tableware. If you need, you can introduce a second step. Coat your plastic with Shellac, then it will last much longer.
Casein is powdered milk. It will not damage your lungs, but if you inhale a lot you can reach a point of respiratory distress. Wear a dust mask to be safe.
Cool, extrudable casein could be 3d printed now that they have come up with the printers that print out clay into artistic and structural parts. One woman on RUclips has come up with a recipe for cement clay.
Ammonia can be gained cheaply. Obviously water is cheap. Borax is cheap. Buying Casein itself isn't cheap, however you can get milk cheaply and there are common methods to extract the casein. With all this considered, it means you can make decent amount of glue for a very cheap price. Because store bough glue in large quantities, that is water resistant is expensive.
You are a genius man. ❤️
