Basically what happened is: Cody was one of the co-founders and big draws for AEW when they started. AEW became bigger and bigger and they signed bigger and bigger names, which lead to Cody fading to the background a little. Cody's role became significantly smaller to the point he probably thought "well we can always give WWE another shot, AEW will be fine without me anyways."
Let's not forget, Cody could always return to AEW. He can't lose.

Pretty much. And I mean, it seems fairly amicable as departures go. The statements from Tony, Cody and Brandi were all very warm.
Like... if you really think about it? Wrestling's a pretty small industry. I think that's why a lot of people leaving WWE try to be cordial even if they've got some criticisms - because someday you may need/want to work there again. And vice-versa. If I look at it as someone who wants a job and has two choices, and maybe choice one is no longer as fulfilling as it once was and choice 2 is offering a significantly bigger bag... I mean I can't blame anyone for making that call.
Plus they've got a kid now, and like Kevin Owens, you gotta look after your family too.
I just hope they don't make him be Stardust again... Vince's spiteful streak being what it is I'm not ruling that out.
Also in terms of AEW - this frees up some room on the show in the midcard to showcase talent who maybe aren't getting enough time on TV.
Basically... mutually beneficial breakup I think. And I'm grateful to Cody for helping start AEW; having a second major promotion is a boon to wrestlers and wrestling fans - period, no matter which product you prefer.

@@dubbkenobby6542 I think what they mean is that there are only a few companies to work for. That's technically not true either, but there are only a few companies that you could exclusively work for and provide for your family a decent life (WWE and AEW. On the other hand, booking in AEW became a lot better when Tony Khan took control of the bookings. Also there's the part where Cody's relationship got sour with the Bucks and Omega quite a while back resulting in Cody's booking feel like a completely separate thing with the rest of the promotion.
There's a reason a lot of people started using the term "Cody Island" for people feuding with him because for the past year or so it felt like everyone regarding Cody's feuds was isolated from the rest of the company until he was done with them.

He might esteem himself as one of the best on AEW and I think he could very well be their third best guy on the roster - next to Punk and Danielson this is something. Cody has a wrestling head, his stuff might not be perfect (like the 'no turn' gimmick), but it always worked. He was also a team player, brought guys like Sami and Darby over from the very beginning - ask FTR how working with The Bucks turned out for them.

I don't think the shrewd business ethics of the Mcmahon machine can be underestimated. I think Cody Rhodes and Chris Jericho will go back and then they'll make moves for their biggest homegrown stars - Wardlow and Jade Carghill. Cody largely broke away to pursue his own interests a while back, having falling outs with near enough everyone in AEW, likely because he assumed he would be perpetually top dog within the company, due to being one of the company's founders. That said, the booking that he did was kinda starting to flounder, and he was kinda putting himself at the top too much, so it made sense for Khan to step in.
I can see Vince giving Cody about a month with top billing just to rub it in Khan's face, if he steps into WWE again, before telling him to either resume his former Stardust gimmick or leave (obviously with a no-compete clause attached to it). He is a shadow of his former self.

I had a feeling if Cody goes back to WWE, his beginning of his second run will be good, but then later on they'll find a way to screw it up. Take a look at some wrestlers who came back and haven't been booked well in their second/multiple runs with WWE such as Mickie James, John Morrison, The Hardy Boyz, EC3, and even currently Shelton Benjamin. Morrison was brought back and rekindled his friendship with the Miz which is cool, reminded me the old ECW days in the RA Era, won SD tag titles, drafted to Raw with the Miz, but then had to change his gimmick as "Drip Drip" with a foam super soaker water gun, getting "eaten" by zombies, Miz turned on him again which led to nothing cuz Miz was competing in DWTS, ends up losing matches in his singles run, then gets released

From that perspective I absolutely agree with it and think it is a good thing, I just think it has gotten a bad rep because people don’t understand why people would have that clause. It’s a low chance of this actually happening, but aew loves to push the boundaries of real and kayfabe. And the wwe loves their money and they know something like this could bring in the big bucks. So I guess it’s not entirely impossible. I mean especially seeing as to how both companies often mention each other on television, could they go for a modern invasion angle? Who knows? I never saw 'Rhodes to the top' or whatever his reality show is called, or bothered/minded Cody trying to branch out into 'Hollywood' as it were, good luck to anyone wanting to better themselves in whatever way they can; I just appreciated that it was him, Kenny & the Bucks who reclaimed my love of wrestling again and that he didn't deserve booing. Although from what I have read it was the fans who were doing out of love to not see Cody pigeonhole himself in the ring, it still feels to me as though the fans were complicit in creating a toxic situation. Tony Khan is probably a little disappointed, but life goes on in AEW and guy still has a full roster of talent that need to be used, so there honestly shouldn't be too much worry on his end on about Cody going somewhere else. The goal for TK at this point, focus on the future of AEW.

If he goes back to WWE, after everything he said in the build up to AEW, his debut in AEW with the sledgehammer, and everything since, I will lose some respect for him. WWE will treat him like they did before he left, just with more money and perhaps thats all it was about after all.

Idk what to make of it anymore but I'll be watching Dynamite. Lee Moriarity vs Danielson sounds like a banger to me.

Love the Final Fantasy reference by Sam. Interested if Cody will have more of a role than just an on screen talent or if he will have more creative control

They might regret this. Probably four of the top 10 matches so far in AEW had Cody in them. He set himself on fire for the company. He broke his foot moonsaulting off a cage. The ladder match with Sammy was one of the top 5 matches on AEW this year. Never understood the mark reaction to him with crowds booing him. (But then I don't get the reaction to people like Hook either, who is good but gets over like some kind of superstar when he's kinda boring to watch.) AEW crowds can be weird.

Could you imagine if Cody shows up in Saudi Arabia this weekend. That would be insane.

I could see it. It's all really sudden where he'd start a fued to lead to Mania at any time now

I still think this is a work. And they're working us by not working us. Like short-term not a work with long-time plans to work us more than we've ever been worked in our lives.
All that talk of (and I'm paraphrasing here), "we're going to be doing some things that have never been done before" and "we're just getting started" and "you're in for a rollercoaster ride".
More eyes on Cody means more eyes on AEW across the board. Let's say it is LEGIT about money right now, the biggest way to get more money for AEW is to get more eyes ON AEW. and this is such a good way of doing that. Also get's Cody more money and frees up time for more AEW stars to shine and make a name for themselves.
If Vince pushes Cody to high heaven, that proves that he was wrong to not see anything in him in the past, and it shows that the AEW product is of equal or greater quality than the WWE (financials aside).
And the bigger Cody gets made in WWE, the bigger he'll be when he comes back to AEW, which is almost a guarantee.
This is a long-term game. Vince doesn't know what he's doing 5 minutes from now, and Tony is planning years ahead.
I can't wait to come back to this months/years from now and either be right or be the biggest fucking wanker mark on the planet.
THIS IS SUCH A FUCKING AMAZING TIME IN WRESTLING!!!!!!!!! Bask in it's glory.
