    I think Taris is a fun planet. I really think the mindset it's boring comes from people who've already beaten the game replaying it as you just want to become a jedi and get liked companions a part of your group already. As a first time experience, it was a fun adventure filled with content.

    hi - yeah i agree the intro for kotor (endar spire + taris) is really underrated as a opening tutorial. it introduces a strong hook to the game and characters are introduced so well throughout the intro (mission, calo nord, canderous)... it is extremely apparent story and rpg elements are focus in this game. i also never feel like that taris is small when there's only around 10 zone/loading screens in the entire sequence. taris actually feels like a bustling and living planet! it has great worldbuilding. i feel like a lot of rpgs have kind of put that part of the formula on the backburner - to me only mass effect and the witcher 3 have come close to reaching the same level. i wish i can see a remake to kotor sooner rather and later - i think a lot of people are put off by its graphics, but it is still solid enough as it is.

    • @timbean8768
      @timbean8768  Год назад +6

      100% agreed. Taris just has a ton of worldbuilding. For example, I love the fact that an area like the undercity has its own unique legends like the promised land. Every level of the world has its own unique vibe to it, you can feel the hopelessness of places like the undercity or the rampant gang violence of the lower city. Also, it's impressive how they managed to introduce Calo Nord as well as they did with the technical limitations of the time, he is immideately established as a real bad-ass.
      And personally I'm not too excited for the remake. I'm trying to have no expections so I won't be dissapointed, but it would be incredible if it can bring a classic like KOTOR to a new generation!

      Peragus is underrated, the murder mystery aspect alone kept me really entertained and wanting to continue the story. Though I admit on second playthrough it's not as interesting, but if you already know what to do you can bulldoze through Peragus significantly faster than Taris.

    • @SirEpifire
      @SirEpifire 3 месяца назад +4

      Peragus has a similar (initially gated) take as Taris. With the exception it's way smaller and instead of getting freed up afterward in TSL, you get stuck on Citadel Station and then Telos' surface. You really don't get near as much real choices in the sequel, which is one of my biggest gripes.

    its crazy how nostalgic this feels, i remember taris mostly for the music, the sound effects, and all the side stories. Taris is most definitely the coolest little starting level of any game.
    You've got Bounties, rare armors, duel arena, Rakghoul serum and the quests that come with it. And you can rake out both Swoop Bike gangs!!
    I love starting a new KOTOR playthrough every few months.
    KOTOR 2 is fun as well, but the tutorial takes ages, and the loot is pure RNG, usually save and load to get the best gear possible.
    KOTOR 2 also is a pain in the ass if you forget something 😂😅

    I always liked Taris! It's cool to be a simple republic soldier with (apparently) nothing special at the start! When you are on the Endar Spire, you can deal with the sith troopers but when the Dark Jedi appear you have to run away. Feeling vulnerable at the start is amazing. Kotor 1 is the story of a person that starts a new life as a second chance. Choosing to be the same person or a different one it's up to the player.

    There's a glitch with the Ebon Hawk. Everyone is standing in the communication room and in the storage room there's droids. They will ask you where would you like to go. You can replay Taris from the moment you woke up at your current level and crew. Or even the Enbor Spire attack and escape. Everything you collect is kept when you leave.

    @Timbean That's because Taris & Telos are two different planets. Taris was intact after the Mandalorian Wars, and was destroyed after the prologue of KOTOR1.
    Telos was a planet destroyed (by Revan, I think?) during the initial phase of the "Jedi Civil War" (when Revan was still Darth Revan), and was in the process of being rebuild during KOTOR2.

    Every time I play it, the utopian cities of Taris and Manaan just make it feel incredible. There's this real, "sky is the limit" feel to the starting section and I've always loved it since I was a kid. You're starting out, initially scraping to get by with Carth; as you slowly reach further and further out from the apartment. It's such a natural and organic way to be introduced to the game. Dantooine is pure bliss, especially with that soundtrack out by the grove (you know the one).

    Taris is great for its sense of atmosphere. The tension on the quarantined planet is palpable, you feel the anxiety, the nervousness when talking to people, and if you let yourself be immersed in the game and its story, it resonates with your own anxiety and sense of urgency because you need to find Bastila and get off the damn rock, but between the Sith blockade and the plague, everything is locked down. On the surface, the planet's society appears prosperous and free, but it's a facade. And every time you think you're close to figuring a way out, you realize you're further from your goal than you thought.
    Yes, the planet also gradually introduces various elements of gameplay in a pretty smooth way, but that's not why it's so good.

    I think that you are correct! I remember watching the gameplay trailer as a 15 year old at a computer shop over and over! My friend was playing warcraft 3 and ALL I wanted to do was watch the video as I had 56k at home. When it finally came out (on xbox) I played through multiple times just to see the differences! Fable coming out not long after also drew my attention. Before these two games I was playing MUDs - the only other game I had really played and got started in was Ocarina of Time. All of these games taught me how to read, write and problem solve. My academic career is largely attributed to them! If these game had not sucked me in (oh and FF7) I don't know where I would be; I had no interest in reading until these games bound me to their stories.

    I just finished playing Kotor 1 for the first time. Blind playthrough, spent a good week playing this game, everyday for at least 10 hours, no lifing it. It was so good man, and I have to wholeheartedly agree with your opinion in the video. I liked every bit of it, every aspect of the game and its story. The whole narrative of "it gets better as you play or watch" is kind of dumb to me, I disagree with it too. People nowadays just don't understand what it means to be patient. They want INSTANT action 24/7 because their brains are rotten.

    I love Taris. Some people say it's a slog only after the first playthrough, but I still enjoy going through Taris. There's so much to do in Taris, especially when you compare it to Peragus and Telos in KOTOR 2. The main story is linear, but you have a lot of freedom to go do what you want.

    I'm playing it for the first time in 2024 on Xbox... I could not really get to grips with the game mechanics on the opening ship, so Taris is great in the sense of allowing one to get comfortable with everything. Watched a couple of YT videos and although I understand the D&D dice roll combat system a bit better I still feel like I am only watching and not in control. PS Thank you for not revealing the plot twist. I am actually still on Taris! 😊

    I wouldn't go so far as to call Taris my favorite part of the game, but I don't think it's boring either. I really enjoy a lot of the side quests on Taris such as the Dueling Ring (though I never could beat Bendak Starkiller). One time as a challenge, I tried to beat all of Taris without leveling up the main character (excluding the forced level up in the Endar Spire). It actually is possible to do without any cheese strats. Carth is a beast in the early game and can easily carry you until you meet Mission and Zaalbar at which point you'll always have two party members who are still leveling up. The only challenging part is right after the Swoop Race when you're alone, but if you turn and run with a little luck, the enemies will all aggro on Bastilla who will wipe the floor with them. That was the first time that her claiming to have saved you instead of the other way around felt justified to me. Admittedly, actually becoming a Jedi yourself is awesome, but even before that, just having Bastilla as a party member gives a similar feeling of power. Excluding Calo Nord (and maybe the Sith Governor), she could probably solo every combat encounter in Taris without even breaking a sweat.

  • @Sandlund93
    @Sandlund93 Год назад

    I agree, Taris is the best planet. Which makes sense, the start of the game is where you get the player interested enough in it to continue playing, from a developer perspective. The starting planets in SWTOR are the best planets too, it´s just smart to focus the majority of your time on that part of the experience as a dev. In Jedi Outcast my favourite level is actually the penultimate one, when you have unlocked all max ranks on Force Powers, but you really have to earn your lightsaber in that one too. To me, Outcast is even better than KotOR, it´s still the best SW game ever made. I haven´t tried Jedi Survivor yet though but I will eventually.
    In KotOR 2 you got Force Storm too quickly, I remember zerging every pack with that one. And the story was kind of dull. It´s like Jedi Academy in that way, you have the ability to be way too overpowered too early (you can choose to get Force Lightning rank 3 in mission 3 if you want) and the story is weak. And Force Rage rank 3 is pretty much God Mode for 10 seconds, it makes every enemy a joke, including the last boss. At least if you mix it with sidestep strikes with the saberstaff, it basically oneshots everything except a handful of bosses/minibosses.

    One of the biggest (if not the) reasons I can't stick with this game is equipped weapons are held-out at all times, no sheathing or holstering. If I want the characters to roam a city realistically, I have to unequip everything. I know it seems silly and it's an older game, but it's an nagging aspect that bars my enjoyment. Can't even find any mods. So that plus an arguably slow start, I haven't been able to push myself past Dantooine on the two times I've given it a chance. I've absorbed all the narrative and lore, but these games need a remaster with a few QoL changes IMO.

    What I've found with KOTOR 1 is, while the main story is great, everything else just reeeaaaaallyyyyyyyyy sucks. Side missions are 9/10 times VERY boring stories with a "canon" resolution and a super caricatured "evil" alternate resolution. Evil choice usually just resulting in slightly more EXP due to killing everyone for no real reason, and +100 credits because "evil is the shortcut to money and power" or whatever, neither of which makes a significant difference to us as players.
