You hear the first 4 chords and immediately know...the sign of a truly great song.
Extremely basic and common chords.
@2:28 “Jane, I can name that tune in 6 notes.”
Wow. That's some lead guitar player !!!
Al Stewart has one of those unique voices which is instantly recognizable and make songs like Year of The Cat & Time Passages classics that will be in our music lexicon for generations to come. Unlike many artists of today which to me sound all alike either with the music they play or sing. Once in awhile a good song will come along these days that will be remembered 20-25 years from now, but not many.
Same face and gesture, I love transparent people. I wish the planet was filled with them.
Amaizing..!!! God bless you Al for your music..!!
Wow! What a tremendous performance! Just overwhelming! Thank you Al!
This performance is a display of sheer master musicianship.

...Spent a wonderful mother/daughter afternoon with my daughter watching her practice for an upcoming riding competition this Sunday. Relaxed, driving home, we sat there singing together, me gently tapping my fingers on her leg. I switch songs on my Ipod shuffle to a less recent song - my BELOVED 1976 tune, Year Of The Cat - by Al Stewart. Melodically, there is something sooo sweet. I feel such complete joy inside recalling my childhood of the 1970's (no doubt the best years I remember) spending weekends & summers at my grandparents cottage up north, traveling & vacationing with my family in Virginia and throughout New England ...and yes, the discovery of Prell shampoo & Pringles potato chips. As I listen to all the beautiful instruments that's played in this song (cello, violin, acoustic guitar, distorted electric guitar, synthesizer & saxophone) my daughter breaks in asking - ''why were songs from your generation sooooo long mom??'' I tell her its because songs from ''my generation'' were quality music, unlike the minute or two of the bubblegum crap that's out there now. The tune gently plays on, my cheeks begin to get sore I realize from the huge smile on my face. I glance over at my daughter. She now has a sour scowl on her face, like she just fell head first into some horse manure. I smile inside, remembering that 38-yr generation gap I KNEW we'd eventually have the day I gave birth to her and held her in my arms. Al Stewart's Year Of the Cat, my not quite 15-year old daughter sitting next to me, another beloved memory that this old hen will remember for many happy year to come....:)
I cleaned house to this album as a teen in the 70s when it came out. but i only liked a few songs on it. it was as pleasant to meet him and share that with him as it was listening to the tunes. check out my meet and greet with him. after i shut the camera off we spoke about a few things, he was awesome.

He looks such an unassuming look to himself. Nerdy even, then the music plays.
Amazing performance by all! Al's voice sounds exactly like it did back in '76!
Scotland's finest timeless guitar and sax solo.
..watching Al play here gives me that indescribeable feeling of the 70s nostalagia..such an under- rated genius. Anyway, i rate him among the top 5 of all time.
you are totally right, mann !!!
I'm 57 Y.O. and he still sounds as good as I remember him in when the song first debuted.
Timeless song and fantastic performances This is a true masterpiece
Dave Nachmanoff you are brilliant!
I've seen him in concert three times between 1985 and 2015 and he remains awesome. I interviewed him for a radio station firstt ime we met. He is humble and just an all around nice person. Smart as hell too.

My Brother treated me to Al Stewart playing in Woodstock Illinois. It took us 5 hours to get there and we forgot the time change, so instead of being 50 minutes early we were 10 minutes late.Per Al's request no one was to be admitted during the show
as the doors opening changed the acoustics. We got our seats at Half time intermission still more then worth the drive and best of all later met him at the pub next door. I had him sign one on my cd's To Al from Al Stewart and even later he tapped me on the shoulder and said you know I wrote this song I told him I did and few minutes later the place went from bored to crazy cool. He's just that good.
This is music at its best!

the 70's never let me down. So much GREAT talent, 40+ years later , a great story , a great tune , a great song, a great artist. They also played their own instruments... Incredible version of an iconic classic by the guy that wrote it....
What a great artist! I love that song, for many years. This one, I don't even miss the sax! So wonderful on it's own! True blue amazing!

Just wow! The year of the cat was just one of my favorite song of all times until I saw this version, now it is my top one. After so many years it looks like they play guitar even better than when they were young.
I liked how they used the guitar to do the saxophone's part, amazing.

I pushed LIKE without watching this for a second.
Loved it when it first came out still love it now.Enchanting!
My God that was so awesome
Well done Al.good job
Fantastic performance - many thanks for posting this gem.
This is a hard track to perform live with just 2 acoustics and a base at the best of times, but the way they did it here playing every instrumental part and even adding in a whole bunch of subtle guitar phrasings, was absolutely top drawer. It wasn't an old tune strummed on an acoustic just hoping to get through to the end - this was dynamic and innovative and a lot of credit has to go top Dave Nachmanoff for a sensational performance on guitar..
.
I think Dave Nachmanoff is superb, and he puts on a terrific solo act, too. I've heard this guitar-only version of "Year of the Cat" live more than once, and it's always relating. Again, my hat is off to Dave Nachmanoff, who seems to pull off impossible feats of musicianship.
WoW, What a find ! A Great performance by a truly great, talented and modest artist. Really Enjoyed,Thank You for posting it.
E CONTINUAM NO ANO DO GATO..... MUITO BOM MESMO..DANCEI MUITO ESTA MUSICA EM MINHA ADOLECENCIA INESQUECIVELLLLL
One of my favs
wow tbat voice is still tbere!!!!!
I saw Mr. Stewart and his exceptional company on his UK tour earlier in the year, I've a broad musical taste (the YOTC album is more than a decade older than myself) but an album I've always loved and greatly respected. I was unsure how such a 'musical' album could be pulled off with such a few musicians.
I needn't have worried, Mr. Stewart keeps obscenely talented company and my jaw dropped at how sublimely executed the whole affair was, and how the original musicality of the album had been kept intact yet given an entirely new spin.
Fantastic.
I am so happy that I found you finally!!!! Best song ever "The Year of the Cat" !!!!!
I remember 1975 76 ..we were smoking Columbian gold in Miami ..late night and my friends ..sasso park this song was on the radio . cool
We've caught Al Stewart's show three times in the last three years, and Dave Nachmanov always turns a really good show into a great one. Thanks so much for posting!
Al is fabulous. I could listen to him all day and all night.
If would've still lived in Houston, surely was heading to the woodlands to see him, what a genuine, modest talented artist.
Al Stewart is an extraordinary poet who happens to write extraordinary music.
Top musicians. beatiful solos.
One of the most excellent songs ever written !!!
