close your eyes and you would swear this was recorded in 78, voice is identical after all these years, and this is a timeless song, so it doesnt matter what year it is anyway!!!
I was at this concert, it was the first time I'd ever seen Al play live. I've seen him many more times since, and always with Dave Nach, who is also great!
He sang the 2nd verse twice! And omitted the 3rd! "...Late last night the rain was knocking on my window/ I moved across the darkened room and in the lampglow/ I thought I saw down in the street/ The Spirit of the Century telling us that we're all standing On the Border..." 🤔
@PAKfromFYCB I'm glad that you liked this. I saw Al Stewart live performing this on my 18th birthday - I'm now 53! I'm afraid I haven't worn as well as Al.
My first time when i ear this song, it's in Algeria for my army service, two years, in 1984...This is a guy like me from Paris , comming for the army... .At this time, no cd, juste K7..what's a beautiful years...And there is 4 months maby , one of his family , say me that my friend is dead. ..Now when i listen on the border, i remember my brother. ..Excuses me for my english and hello from Paris ...thank's
I always liked his facial expressions when he sang, especially when younger with long hair. While other musicians are worried about looking cool, he just looks like someone who really enjoys what he's doing, and not the least big stuck up over it.
It's amazing how consistent Al Stewart is. Listening to the actual recording and the live performance, he hasn't changed. Same timing, same good sound. He's standing the test of time, isn't he?
TO ALL AL STEWART AND PETER WHITE FANS PHIL KENZIE The legendary sax soloist on all of Al Stewart's hits will be appearing at the upcoming "once in a lifetime" concert at The Royal Albert Hall on October 15th. This concert coincides with the release of Phil's CD, " A Night With The Cat" which will be available for purchase. A tribute to Al Stewart's artistry, it is an instrumental version of the magical lyrics of "The Year of The Cat". which will be enjoyed by all on this very special night.
Funny to read the Pet Shop Boys comments. His voice is similar to them, his talent is greater. Apparently he now gives guided wine tours in California, as well as performing live. Saw him in 1980 (London) and 2010 (Bristol) and his beautiful melodies are perfectly performed. But it would be great to hear him with a full band. The electric guitar, the sax....
As much as I love Year of the Cat, I might like this more, that guitar is so cool in this. I do miss the strings in this version as the added a bit of ann ominous feel to it. Still amazing though
geoff emerick tells of how a very young Al Stewart assisted in the recordings of 'Abbey Road', and rose in the ranks at EMI to be the board engineer for Pink Floyd's "Dark Side of the Moon..." amazing how these great players were also so technically on top of it, too... and i agree with the earlier post: i too am so grateful that i had such music as this to listen to instead of this angry hyped-up garbage of today.
Mikemoney, I agree. Guitars and vocals sound great, but the voice should have been mixed higher, or guitars lower. A technical blemish on an otherwise great performance. I saw Al perform just a few years ago in Seattle. I was blown away by how good his voice is, and pleased at how happy he was to be performing. No "contractual obligation" here!
I'm no guitar expert, but by process of elimination, I assume you mean Dave Nachmanoff (or davenach on youtube)... he tours with Al pretty commonly and Al has a live album with him, "Uncorked."
This beautiful song is about freedom. It specifically has nothing to do with Mexico but more to do with despotism under the Fascist Francisco Franco in Spain. Oddly, it is about gun control that Franco implemented before the slaughter of the innocents during his bloody rule. Those who opposed fascist rule smuggled guns across the border. Perpetually, enemies of free peoples, limit gun ownership to their brutal armies and their political allies. Gun control is people control. The right of free people to keep and bear arms shall not be denied.
Wow, talk about "Time Passages". One look and I can see this isn't the shaggy haired Brit I used to love to hear on the radio. Only the voice is the same! Well, I'm glad he's still performing...his accompanist, however, is no Peter White. My opinion. I still have the album and love the original best.
Deardarvyowolf.....Go to your google/mozilla search engine, then enter the word.........AL...........then-STEWART...........and then finally..........TABS !! Then after that I'm afraid you're on your own !!
I submit to you, ladies and gentlemen, that anyone playing this song with an electric guitar is committing a crime against humanity and should be prosecuted therefore... Some music simply MUST be acoustic. That's fine... some music simply MUST be electric. 'Du Hast' would sound ridiculous at an open mic poetry slam with one guy on guitar and another guy on out of tune bongos. [Although full and respectful props to the Serbian acapella choir who knocked 'Du Hast' completely out of the park with just the human voice]
Ugh... acoustic bass; worse stringed instrument ever made. I has no sound at all and must be electrified, in which case why not a double or electric base?
close your eyes and you would swear this was recorded in 78, voice is identical after all these years, and this is a timeless song, so it doesnt matter what year it is anyway!!!
Yes, timeless song and artist..Love his songs since I was a child..
OK 👌😊💙❤️👍👌
Why is a master class genius such as Al Stewart so very underrated .... the worlds gone absolutely crazy
Isn't it better that way ? Only a select few can appreciate him.
I'm glad that this music is still around and accesible for people like me, i'm 20
Thank you Al Stewart and all your mates!! The band is absolutely stunning! What a gift!
This is a masterpiecce of pure guitar music!
His voice sounds just as good as it did 30 years ago when I first had the pleasure of hearing him.

Song of my life
A song that stands the tell of the times. Nice job Al
I was at this concert, it was the first time I'd ever seen Al play live. I've seen him many more times since, and always with Dave Nach, who is also great!
Seen Al and the little guitarist day before yesterday. What an amazing couple, playing so beautiful together.
Yes! He is brilliant, and the most underrated composer in the English language of the modrern era.

Close my eyes and it's like when I first listened to his songs in my childhood..

Love for men who play their own guitars..love you all
I always liked his facial expressions when he sang, especially when younger with long hair. While other musicians are worried about looking cool, he just looks like someone who really enjoys what he's doing, and not the least big stuck up over it.
Caught Al Stewart performing in a small music venue last night in Austin, Tx. Wonderful concert.
It's amazing how consistent Al Stewart is. Listening to the actual recording and the live performance, he hasn't changed. Same timing, same good sound. He's standing the test of time, isn't he?
FANTASTIC MUSIC, FANTASTIC BAND.
Al's guitarist in this video was the same one that played with him the other night. He was even wearing the exact same clothes!
That little guitarist awesome.

Yes, I was taken aback by the short hair at first, too! The voice is undeniable, though.
Al's looking like Eric Idle doing the Dirk McQuickly characterization of Paul McCartney... Great song, I still have the vinyl LP...

Serious guitar playing there
On the Border is L*O*V*E*L*Y. Lance in beautiful Bremerton, Washington
You should look up Peter white he wrote the Spanish guitar parts for this song
As much as I love Year of the Cat, I might like this more, that guitar is so cool in this. I do miss the strings in this version as the added a bit of ann ominous feel to it. Still amazing though

the big surprise here is the classic guitarist on Stewart's right (left as we see). Anybody knows his name?
I wish he's do a cover of The Pet Shop Boys' "West End Girls"
I reckon they were inspired by him.
I have listened to all different versions of the song.
In this one the kitharist is unbelievable,.....any one knows his name?
Dave Nachmanoff

actually you're 23 ;)
No disrespect intended, but the guitarist who is smashing that flamenco looks kind of like Ba-Ba-Booey.
That guy is good but he aint Peter White.
