    Former A-10 Crew Chief here. The gun is rarely loaded to full capacity of 1350 rounds. 1174 is the standard load, and if I remember correctly, it's because the "Dragon", or the device used to load the A-10's gun holds half that amount. So two full loads from the Dragon and the gun is full enough.

    As a two tour Vietnam era Marine (1965-66/1970-71) we didn't have the A-10 but we did have the F-4 Phantom and the A-4 Sky Hawk for close air support. No matter what aircraft arrived it was welcomed when you needed it!

      Thank You sir for serving in "Nam" I had three older cousins who served. All came home but "damaged" non the less. One came through LAX and was spit on by people there protesting the WAR. That was in Feb of 1970, if I remember, right. He had ordered a car from Chevrolet a Midnight Blue color Chevy Nova with 427 and 4 speed in the Fall of '69. His brother picked it up. I think it was Feld, Chevrolet... don't remember but he came over to our house to give us all a ride! I NEVER got back in that in that car, again. He scared the B Jesus out me and my sister. It was fast. He was never the same, thou. Never married... After "Nam" he committed suicide. 30 years ago. Cliff you were a good person. People War is HELL! Never forget THAT!

    The 3900 rounds per minute is if the gun was to fire continuously for one minute. The amount of rounds carried is about a third of that.

    • @seekexplorewander
      @seekexplorewander 4 месяца назад +1

      Yup, about a third. At one point the drum was about 1350 rounds but they constantly tweak the armament payload based on past field/war experience and perceived future use so it can go lower or higher in the future. And you're spot on about the what rate means.

    The A-10 carries 1350 rounds of depleated uranium ammo. It fires in about 50 round burst as the gun produces so much gas, continuously firing it would stall the engines. A10 pilots have a saying, "If you heard my gun, I wasn't shooting at you". Me USAF 1984-90.

    1,350 rounds is max capacity... the pilot can basically pull the trigger 8-9 times in very controlled burst or they could just dump it all in 22.5 seconds, the cannon also returns the spent shells back into the plane for 2 main reasons the location of the 2 jet engines and it also acts as a ballast to keep the weight distributed... you have to remember the plane is literally built around a huge cannon... they just put wings on it 😂

    Dude is wrong. It's around 3000 rounds per burst. Averaging around 30 seconds. He was thinking of the f15/16 Is gatling gun. The warthog on he ammunition was accurate. And has a payload of 18,000 rounds. That allows it to fire 3000 rounds per 30 seconds without melting the barrels. That is 12 times of firing 3000 at once or less if needed. Most likely 3 second burst are used at 600 rounds. That is generally enough to take out any 3 tanks and half of an infantry. A multi use 500 lbs bomb is generally used to cover up, or more per perpottion of the tank platoon or convoy
