    A-10 costs $10.1 million to make. F-16 costs $63 million to make. F-35 costs $70 to $90 million to make. The A-10 uses "off the shelf" parts, while the fighter planes use specialized parts (justifiably) Fighter planes differ in usage. The F-16 is more of a "we've been spotted/dogfight ensues" kind of plane. The F-35 is more of a "Avoid getting spotted/attack/disappear" kind of plane.

    The newest A-10s are over 40 years old and the aircraft is still in service today. It is so good at its job that when the Air Force tried to retire it the Comandant of the United States Marine Corp called the Air Force General in charge and said that if he retired the Warthog the Marine General would go check out a Marine FA-18 fighter and personally fire bomb the Air Force General's family home. The Air Force dropped the plan to retire the Warthog and over the next 25 years the aircraft has been upgraded 4 times since then.

    The G.A.U 30 mm gun on the A-10 is bigger than a Volkswagen Beetle. They built the plane around the gun. The gun causes the plane to actually slow down when fired. So they fire in short bursts to counter it from causing drag. The bullets it fires are the size of beer bottles. Turns the enemy into just a red mist. To me it's the best plane ever built simply because of it's support for the troops on the ground. It saves lives. Soldiers got to go home to their families because of the A-10. And it'll be a sad day for me when they retire the A-10.

    • @mykalwhite9149
      @mykalwhite9149 5 месяцев назад

      Additionally, when an aircraft is firing 70 rounds per second you need to account for 2 vastly more important reasons for short bursts instead of sustained firing. 1. Amount of ammo used 2. Heat displacement

    the A-10 was born out of the necessity of an all weather ground support aircraft. The United States Air Force was flying a propeller aircraft it was the A-1 Sky Raider The lack of speed of it is what pushed the DoD to seek a replacement for it. Thus the A-10 "Warthog"(actual name is Thunderbolt 2") the endearing name given this aircraft by it's pilots. The Warthog has been on the retirement list for many years but it seems to always survives, the Air Force has wanted to use the F35 strike fighter for this job but it does not have the capability to carry the loads required, as well as not having the survivability as the A-10, so it is still in the inventory. I do not know if they are in process of designing or testing a replacement, however I do know that the fleet is going through a full tear down and rebuild with new wings and wing spars, new electronics so they will be around for many more years.

    Check out the SR-71 Blackbird! WHOA! It flies so fast that when it fires a missile it has to slow down or it will run into it. Also the entire plane is the fuel cell. At high altitude and high speed the body panels will start to contract on themselves, the the body panels have a hair line gap between them when on the ground. But at 70k feet doing 4000mph across the sky they are air tight and working perfectly. This is the plane that could not be shot down during the Vietnam War. By the time the enemy had it on radar it was already 100s of miles away. C'ya!!

    The best argument ever about it was when a totally clueless congresswoman or senator, I forget which, said it could be replaced with the B-2 bomber. As in high altitude bombing from a plane that really needs to fly at night to be as safe as possible, as being visible in the day takes away a big advantage of stealth. Luckily, John McCain, ex-navy F-4 pilot, Vietnam vet, ex-prisoner of war once held in the Hanoi Hilton, goes on to explain to her how useless her opinions are on a topic she clearly did NOT understand. The same things still happen today unfortunately. People want the F-35 to replace the Hog, but it simply can’t do it! It can’t take the abuse, can’t operate from unimproved airfields, can’t field the same gun, thus can’t fire the same ammunition, can’t operate as low at the same low speeds and remain as nimble, is limited on what it can haul and remain stealthy, as any wing mounted munitions change the radar cross section, can’t loiter on station for anywhere near the same amount of time, doesn’t have as many redundant systems, way way more expensive per unit, they already are behind schedule on production, not to mention the biggest point… if an A-10 gets shot down, the enemy gets our technology from 1970’s (yes I know there are modernizations, but I’m referring to the base of what they’ll find), but if a F-35 goes down, they get all the modern equipment, that crazy cool and expensive helmet with all its tech that lets them see “through” the plane, access to all the materials and coatings used to achieve stealth! With the amount of damage a Hog can take, and F-35 would only make it as far as the crash site!
    Only the ammunition, people look over one key word in the name. DEPLETED Uranium, as in almost entirely used up as far as radioactive goes! Do you think the pilot riding with that stuff between their legs, the people on the ground around it, storing it, or loading it are immune to radiation?!? Uranium, even that which is not depleted, can be held in the palm of your hands people! It’s only dangerous if it gets into your body as your skin is enough to stop the alpha particles it’s emitting. Yes, people getting hit by it could, and that’s a BIG could, get cancer, but I seriously doubt they will die from cancer before they die from the wounds suffered from a 30mm armor piercing round or the shrapnel it produces! They have a lot bigger things to worry about at this point if the ammunition was going to give them cancer.

  • @andrewcolombana3226
    @andrewcolombana3226 5 месяцев назад +1

    The biggest problem is the F-16 has to zoom over the battle field and can only engage a single tank on each pass. The F-16 due to low fuel load can only spend 10-15 minutes streaking over the battle field then leave the battle field to refuel loosing all site of changing armor and tactics as the A-10 can spend 45 minutes and due to speed and maneuverability detect and hit several tanks on each pass during the long stretch. The Air Force is ignorant in many choices because with restructuring Air Combat Command is now the largest portion of the Air Force and are all fighter pilots which look down on the A-10 because they see the A.F. spending a lot of money to defend and completely work for the Army and they want that money for fighter jets. They want the Army to help pay for A-10's and old ABCCC aircraft which the Air Force deleted because the Army refused to pay and support the Command and Control Aircraft.

If the battle developed unfavorably, the plans included the use of nuclear battlefield weapons. The approximate average survival time of a NATO main battle tank was 4- 6 minutes given. Such an attack by the Warsaw Pact, given an unfavorable development by one of the two opponents, would almost certainly have meant the use of nuclear battlefield weapons. A further escalation would have been likely. My home country, then the Federal Republic of Germany, would have had the “very best” chance of ending up as a nuclear desert.

    The Air Force never liked the A-10. It wasn't fast enough, it wasn't meant to kill enemy fighters, it is not sexy enough for the fighter pilot generals that run the Air Force. A good example of the relative likes and dislikes is that the F-22 Raptor was first deployed to the First Fighter Wing, Premiere home of new fighters. I think the F-15 Eagle also made its premiere here as well (not sure on this one). The first unit to get A-10s? Not a big important unit like the First Fighter Wing. The first unit was an Air National Guard squadron in Minnesota. Why going to a third string unit instead of a regular major Air Force unit? The generals hated it...

    Depleted Uranium is good for AP on the battlefield, but possibly not so good men after. I have a VA C&P "phone call," appointment on March, 20 for all the hazards on a battlefield. At this point it hardly matters.

    Wrong the F16 has 9 weapons stations not 11 Stattions 1,2,8,9 are for Air to Air Missiles stations 3,4, 6,7 can carry Air to ground munitions station 5 centerline can carry munitions but mainly carries an external fuel tank or ECM pod ( Electronic Counter Measures )

      The guy said 11 hardpoints, not weapons stations. 2 of the 11 are for sensor pods, so you are also correct that there are 9 weapons stations.

    It has been upgraded since it's conception. They were going to get rid of it but the Mariens said will take them.Like all their hand-me-downs. They were recently talking about stopping all manufacturing But then they released another updated version. Lol

    The A-10 is not a small plane. It is larger than the F16, F22, and F35.

    Slowest plane in the USAF, and the tightest turning. Leave the A-10 alone. The wings take a lesson from the fighter planes of World War II. If you hear the gun go off while your on the ground, the plane was not aiming at you. You will die before you hear gun fire.
