When it was first decided that the British would leave, negotiations began between the British and Indian representatives, particularly the representative of the Indian National Congress Party, Jawaharlal Nehru, and the voice of India’s Muslim League, Mohammad Ali Jinnah. The latter was concerned that an independent, united Indian subcontinent would create an unfair political environment for the Muslim minority in the Hindu-dominated region.

Battkes won by India during the first Kashmir war
Battle of Shelatang (7 November 1947) - A decisive battle where Indian forces halted the advance of tribal invaders towards Srinagar.
Battle of Shalateng (7 November 1947) - Often cited along with Shelatang, it was a significant engagement where Indian forces launched a counter-offensive to secure Srinagar.
Battle of Badgam (3 November 1947) - Indian forces engaged the tribal invaders, which included the famous actions of Major Somnath Sharma, who was posthumously awarded the Param Vir Chakra.
Battle of Zoji La (1 November 1948) - Indian forces used tanks at high altitudes for the first time to push back Pakistani forces and secure the pass.
Operation Bison (13-15 November 1948) - An operation that led to the capture of Dras, Kargil, and ultimately, Leh.
Battle of Naushera (January-February 1948) - A series of engagements to defend the strategic town of Naushera.
Battle of Jhangar (December 1947 - February 1948) - Key battles around the town of Jhangar, with Indian forces initially losing and then recapturing the town.
Battle of Tithwal (May 1948) - Indian forces recaptured the Tithwal region from Pakistani forces.
Battle of Poonch (November 1947 - November 1948) - A prolonged siege where Indian forces successfully defended Poonch and eventually lifted the siege.
Battle of Rajouri (April 1948) - Indian forces liberated Rajouri from Pakistani invaders.

@@waytogo11 Maharaj was a nemesis of India coz he was an arch rival of Shiekh Abdullah, and shiekh abdullah was one of biggest ally of Nehru, this is the reason why initially he wasn't acceding Kashmir to India
2.) Gilgit rebels had attavked the vale even before when Indian forces had airlifted to Kashmir, this itself proove that Gilgit rebels had defeated the forces of Maharaja but not the Indian forces, India had finally invaded Kashmir from the south by 26th of oct, and Pakistan had already invaded Kashmir by 22nd of october, this proove that it was India, which had defeated Gilgit rebels and Pakitani forces and had moved them out of the vale,
3.) I agree India took the matter to UN, coz
A.) India had the support of Shikh abdullah
B.) Case of Junagarh was still pending
C.) India was always the biggest regional power
D.) India was overconfident about her position in Kashmir,
India was already defeating Pakistan, it was a diplomatic failure of India, if India had not took this matter to the UN, then it was just the matter of time, and whole Kahsmir would had been a part of India,
your histrory lessons needs to be checked, Jinnah had stooped at unimaginable levels , he had wanted to to establish the illegal state of Pakistan quite entirely over the Hindu India , his ill intentions were not just limited to the the 6 states, case of Junagarh and Hyderabad prooves that, and also if Pakistan could had the audacity of claiming Hindu majority Hyderabad and Hindu majority Junagrah on the basis of so-called IOA ,then why not India?India is way more powerfull and influentiol than Pakistan, if Pakistan can dare to provoke India, then the regional superpower India would surely retaliate and also the people of Kashmir had never wanted to join Pakistan, they just had wanted to get rid of the Dogra ruler, and for that they had been supporting Shiekh abdullah, shiekh abdullah was pro-India, coz of that jinnah had even referred Abdullah as a traitor, which had offended the Kashmiri people, and also we are talking about the 1940' sat that time, Hindus of kashmir used to make about 30 percent of the population( before the forcefull exodus of Hindus by the Muslims of Kashmir), and the Hindus of Kashmir(including Bhuddists and Sikhs)were and are still highly pro-India, so your arguments are quite baseless
And for the record, Pakistan wasn't really supporting a plebscide in Kashmir initially coz it knew that the peope would vote for Shiekj abdullah and he was sponsoring the legallity of the Instrument of Accession of Kashmir with India ,coz of this Pakistan voilated the UN resolution and din't vacate the occupied terretories,Dogra ruler was Hindu, but still his ties with the Indian government were quite bad(that's the reason why din't signed the IOA with the Indian government initially, but only after the Pakistani invasion of Kashmir)
The misleading info which is being spread by the Pakistani media has deeply infiltrated into the minds of Pakistanis!
Pakistan is purely at the fault, it's Pakistan, which is instigating this issue even after losing all the wars and conflicts against India, India is, was, will always be on the morally right side,

it was Pakistan who declared war on India in order annexe regions like Jammu and Kashmir, Pakistan choose to go on war with India in 1965 because at that time the US had given Pakistan advanced weapons and jets giving Pak army and airforce an edge
But even after all this, Pakistan failed to achieve its objectives and was forced to agree for the ceasefire
Both India and Pakistan claim victory for the 1965 war, but it's considered as an Indian victory as India successfully defended against Pakistani attacks and also captured Lahore during the counter offensive while Pakistan failed to achieve its goals and also faced more loss and casualties compared to India

The real "Kashmir" region (Kashmir Valley or the Jhelum River Valley) was at war in the first war for a very short period. Most of the war was in the Jammu division (Jhangar, Poonch, Rajouri, Mirpur, Kotli, etc.). In the Kashmir Division, only the Western region (Baramulla, Gulmarg, Sopore) came under Pakistani occupation before being pushed back, even out of Uri.
While India could have liverated further up till Muzaffarabad, it was decided that the troops guarding the Kashmir division should instead be diverted south to end the Siege of Poonch.
As for the Trans Himalayan theatre (Gilgit, Skardu, Kargil and Leh), you didnt mention that there was direct British intervention and support towards the Pakistani side in the Rebellion of the Gilgit Scouts. The British did not want India to have a direct land border with Afghanistan and hence, the Soviet Union.
One of the greatest moments of this war was towards the end, when a group of scouts left the Indian Himalayan town of Manali in search of a path through uncharted Himalayas towards the Buddhist city of Leh trying to survive the Pakistani siege. The expedition to find a path to Leh was so successful that the Leh-Manali highway is still used to this day to reach Leh and Kargil without going through Kashmir Valley.
Subsequently, this was also the very first war where tanks were used in high altitude and worked, in pushing the Pakistanis out of Drass, Kargil and Leh, but sadly could not reach Skardu before the ceasefire.

What defines and unites India as a nation is common language(Sanskrit), religion/culture aka Hinduism & its offshoots + other faiths which share or have source in Hinduism, common ruling families, etc. This is like saying there was no Germany or Italy before 1870s. India is a civilization. Just like China. They're in no way comparable to Europe and any Western nation/nation state.
Nation states is a post-Napoleonic Wars period concept whose roots are in the treaty of Westphalia of 1630 which paved way for secular(aka less political Christianity) identitarian nationalisms.

This doesn’t mention the jammun massacres which occurred shortly before the conflict errupted. The armies of Kashmir began massacring thousands of muslim civilians in the jammun region in an successful attempt to turn the region minority muslim. Its estimated that around 100,000 muslims were killed in these massacres in jammun and the proportion of muslims in the region fell from 60% to 33%. In response, pashtun tribesmen began massacres of Hindus in the areas of jammun under their control, with the proportion of hindus in these regions falling from 10% to less than 1%. This was a large part in why the Pakistani government felt pressured to act and invade the princely state.

What on earth are you talking about. I fail to see the relevance of your frankly incorrect and ahistorical statement to the Kashmir conflict. Regardless, I will debunk your "points". Every religion and people have done violent things in the past, so what? Name me one that hasn't. Saying a bunch of unsourced claims do not help your point in the least. 1.) Indeed, Islam spread to the northern part of the Indian subcontinent through conquest, but so to did Hinduism with the Aryans and later Christianity with the British so I fail to see its relevance. If you are trying to say that it was caused by forced conversions than that is blatantly false, as shown by the fact that after 700 years of Muslim rule only around 70% of the Jammun region was muslim. Compare this to regions where forced conversions actually did take place such as Spain and the Philippines and you immediately see a difference as the persecuted religions of these places quickly faded within a few centuries. Even if forced conversions did take place, that doesn't change the fact that the Muslims there would still be the same indigenous inhabitants of the land so again I fail to see the relevance of your misinformation. If you are genuinely interested in learning about real and unbiased history, here are a few sourced and referenced threads about this topic which should shield some light, although I sincerely do doubt that you will read any of it. Alas, I've done what I can to combat your misinformation, the rest is up to whether or not you are willing to accept factual information from real historians rather than using your pre-conceived notions to make up claims of dubious veracity. www.reddit.com/r/badhistory/comments/2enj7m/lets_talk_about_islam/

The power to decide whether to remain independent / chose between India and Pakistan was under the British Parliament's Lapse of Paramountcy Act was given to the Ruler and not to the public. Pakistan should have challenged this Act in the House of Lords - Gilgit , Hunza , Baltistan , Mirpur , Muzzafarabad and also Chitral were parts of erstwhile Riyasat of Jammu and Kashmir which, in 1947 , legally acceded, in its entirety to India. Riyasats like Jammu and Kashmir , Kalat , Bahawalpur , Umerkot etc were covered under the Lapse of Paramountcy Act of British Parliament. We cannot be selective. India 🇮🇳 has much more legitimacy over Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh as:
    1) Historically J&K and Ladakh have been parts of Indian empires such as Mauryas and Sikhs. Ladakh is a Buddhist majority area of India just like Sikkim or Arunachal. If they join China/Pakistan, their rights will be taken just like Tibet.
    2) The King of Jammu & Kashmir signed an instrument to join India. It was later Pakistan who got angry and started terr○rising Jammu & Kashmir. Before the King's decision of joining India, Pakistan did not even care about Kashmir.
    3) There are many important Temples like Vaishno Devi & Amarnath Temple in Kashmir. They are extremely sacred for Hindus. Meanwhile there is no reason for Pakistan to go to Kashmir.
    4) If you look at Jammu & Kashmir and the Pakistani illegally occupied part of Kashmir today, there is a huge difference. Jammu & Kashmir is one of most visited tourist regions of India. Meanwhile nobody goes to Pakistan illegally occupied Kashmir.
    5) In Kashmir India has hosted G20 Meeting, will host Miss World in few days, will post International Automobile Expo, has already hosted many international seminars and much more. On other hand Pakistan illegally occupied Kashmir has hosted terr○r groups like Lashkar-e-Taiba, Hizbul and Jaish-e-Muhammad.
    6) India built world's highest rail bridge in Jammu & Kashmir. India built Asia's longest tunnel in Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh. India built first class infrastructure especially in Lal Chowk, Srinagar, Jammu & Kashmir. On other hand, people of Pakistan illegally occupied Kashmir don't even have flour to eat.
    7) Most important of all: Kashmir is named after a Hindu sage named Kashyap, who lived in that area. "Mir" means lake. The region has a lake named after sage Kashyap. Thus "KashMir." Pakistan claims Kahsmir just because it is an Indian Union Territory and nothing else.

Maharaj was a nemesis of India coz he was an arch rival of Shiekh Abdullah, and shiekh abdullah was one of biggest ally of Nehru, this is the reason why initially he wasn't acceding Kashmir to India

Battle of Skardu (February-August 1948) - A prolonged battle resulting in the fall of Skardu to Pakistani forces.
      1. India din't lost Kashmir but Pakistan did, the Hindu Mahraja of Kashmir remained neutral but It rattled Pakistan, Pakistan armed the gilgit scouts and they occupied the gilgit baltistan, mirpur and neelum valley and muzafarrabd from the state of Kashmir and not from India, this all happened on 22 oct 1947,Hindus were being persecuted in mirpur thus this forced India to interverne, IOA was signed with India on 26OCT1947 and Kashmir officially accedes towards India, war continued and Pakistan officially joined this war but was defeated in Kashmir valley,Jammu and Ladakh, more than half of Kashmir falls under the Indian controll,India took the matter to the UN, because firstly India had the IOA as well as the support of Shiekh Abdullah and also India was and is way more influential and powerful than Pakistan however instead of sponsoring Indian claims UN ended the war with ceasefire and Kashmir became a disputed, however since India controll more than half of Kashmir, waterways and all the crucial strategic positions and made Pakistan vulnerable thus India was termed as the victor
      2. In 1965,Pakistan launched an operation gibraltar, assisted by Indian arch rival China, agaibst India, this operation sparked a war in kashmir and there were strong pobabilities of China joining this war along with Pakistan against India and India launched a counter offence by invading Lahore,Pakistan as a result was confused ,entire phase of the war was shifted, Pakistan lost more men and tank in Kashmir, and large chunks of land in Lahore, invading Indian forces destroyed Lahore, however, coz of the pressure from both US and USSR India had to withdraw and sign the tashkant agreement, thus even after winnig this war against Pakistan and the tactics of China,India had to withdraw by accepting the ceasefire as India wasn't capable enoigh of offending both US amd USSR
      3. Azerbaijaan is also separted by the Armenian land,Russia is also separated by lithanuia and finland still they are defending thier integrity, just accept that Pakistan wasn't capable enough of defeating India, India started this war by assiting mukti bahini, and finally invading both west amd east Pakistan after Hindus were persecuted in Pakistan and made it surrender, and finally liberated Bangladesh and for the recordw,Pakistan was also defeated and invaded by India on the western front,
      4. Kargil war wasn't a war but an armed conflict,Pakistan(a newly nuclear power nation) proved itself as an irresposible power by igniting this conflict by assisting taliban by letting them encroach over the Indian land, Talibs and mujahuddins were overconfident after war with USSR thus they provoked India but it backfired,India not only gained control over the kargil but exposed Pakistan globally aswell,
      5. You missed 1984,in which Indian operation meghdoot was success agaibst Pakistan, and made Pakistan lose enitre siachin glacier, this is another victory of India over Pakistan

I suppose this is about as informative as you can be in just thirteen minutes (more like eleven after you take out the promotional stuff), but I think the effort to avoid sounding partisan about a hotly contested issue has led the makers of this video to say too much about the military aspects of the war and too little about the conclusions of most objective historians when assessing and analysing who/what was primarily responsible for this conflict. And what's the deal with the weird pronunciations of the names 'Nehru' and 'Jinnah'? I am familiar with various Indian/Pakistani accents (common here in Yorkshire) and I've never heard either name pronounced with the stress on the last vowel.

@exiled_londoner There is nothing right and wrong in this world. eg- Eventhough people say Israel is responsible for genocide. People forget that hamas started the war. Hamas's telegram fully supports the massacre of jews. Hamas started a war against those families who lost their loved ones in Israel. There are literal vi deos of jews being slaughtered in ghettos of Iraq and Syria. Yet people complain that Israel is a terrorist state (Illgeal occupying) Palestine. But the matter of fact is , the west bank was of Egypt. But they did not want it because of its rebellious nature. Furthermore, Israel left west bank before. To show good will. In return they got hamas. Now, say Palestine is a victim. Unlike, your idea of good or bad. The people revolted in upper part of Kashmir. But king acceded to India. So, is it wrong to say that Kashmir is not a part of India? Is it wrong to say England massacred the identity and people of Scotland and Ireland to dominate them? Is it wrong to say, that NATO is trying to influence countries like Ukraine to ensure Russian autonomy is threatened? Is it wrong to say that British must return $45 trillion to India which they looted and for the artificial famines ( 2 Bengal famines) created by your favourite prime minister Winston Churchill? SO, you see. This reply is written by a student who is not even studying history or in fact social science.

At 6:24 in the video it states what "exactly happened isn't known" - that's because the people it happened to, haven't been asked. Imagine trying to document the holocaust without the survivors stories?! My grandparents are from the region and they experienced what happened. Hundreds of thousands like them survived to tell the tale of what happened to our people.
The Maharaja was a tyrant - he was disliked by the population of the region, especially the Muslim majority because of his anti Muslim policies, alongside the high taxes, deliberately aimed to drive away the poor rural population. Our grandparents often talked about how they were told of better times during the Sikh Empire, especially the rule of Ranjeet Singh, who had controlled parts of Jammu and Kashmir as part of his empire.
When the Maharaja's forces went to disarm the muslims, it was not limited to poonch, it was wide spread in Muslim regions of Jammu and Kashmir. They even took farming tools and axes so people couldn't use them to resist. Following that right wing hindu mobs alongside the maharaja's forces burned, looted, killed and raped their way through the villages of Jammu and Kashmir, in a progrom similar to what has happened to the Rohingya of Myanmar. This caused hundreds of thousands of refugees and started the military conflict - where the Kashmiri tribes and Pukhtun tribes joined.

Abd about it being a Muslim majority region, Umberkot, Karachi and Lahore were Hindu Sikh majority but were given to you. Will you talk about that? Pakistan is not a representative of subcontinental Muslims, it butchered over 3 million people in Bengal alone, a good reason is there to assume that most were Muslims. @@TacticalWolf145

First Kashmir War involved battles in highest terrain like in Skardu, Operation Gulmarg and the 5 day plan to take Srinagar the capital seems deliberately ignored, The Massacres at the Cities like Baramulla, Kotli, Mirpur etc are not included in the video, The Rebellion of the Muslim troops in The Maharaja's Army namely the Gilgit Scouts which helped Pakistan to gain cities like Gilgit easily during the initial days and THE BRITISH ROLE IN THE WAR are missing which can make audience learn better about conflict.
