    My mother still has the percolator she got as a wedding present in 1963. It's pretty banged up due to numerous moves, but it still makes a decent pot of coffee. Older appliances last forever!

    Hi, I collect percolators, and a hint for you. Before adding the coffee grinds, wet the basket, it will keep grounds from falling through the basket, or you can find percolator paper filters that cover the bottom of the basket.

    My grandma had one of those, she was a 1950's mom. She was beautiful, like a movie star. She always had her hair done at the "beauty parlor" by her beauty operator and her make up on. I love the 50's, I so wish I could have experienced that era.

    • @MimiLovesYarn

      Hearing you describe your grandma reminds me of my Grammy, another 50’s mom. Always wore dresses, jewelry, hair done and baked the best bread🍞. She taught me patch quilting and Seamstress work, much simpler times. I so love the 50’s! I think that’s what is so magical about bringing vintage back today. We need more of this in the world🤩🤩

    They sell special coffee filters for percolators. Most regular grocery store coffee is to finely ground for them.

    • @tarbhnathrac
      @tarbhnathrac 3 года назад +3

      Precisely! They look like a small round paper disk with a hole through the middle for the post to go through vs. a paper basket for drip coffeemakers. I was surprised to see her make a pot without a filter. She only drank 1/2 cup off the top & then poured another 1/2 cup hours later. If she had drunk to the last cup I'm afraid she would have found quite a bit of sediment in her cup. Also for that cup she did note that it was still hot, but after the coffee (sediments & oils) being directly on that heating element all day that coffee would have tasted scorched.
      Percolators, just due to the brewing method, naturally make stronger coffee than drip makers and are preferred by most skilled chefs and coffee connoisseurs.

    • @claree1241
      @claree1241 3 года назад +2

      @@tarbhnathrac I disagree. You don't need filters in percolators, and the environment doesn't need them in the landfill. I can promise you we didn't have percolator filters in the 50s. Percolator coffee is my favorite kind of coffee. It needs a coarser grind than the regular drip coffee so you'll find more of the grounds fall through the hole of the coffee basket into the water while percolating. It's great it is still working after all these years becsuse if you buy one made now it might stop working in a couple months. Believe my Grandma had one like that, the cord definitely looks familiar. 🙂

    Hi, sweet girl. Thank you for posting this, as it reminds me of my mom. She had a percolator like this, and used it for years. She passed away just a few years ago, so I understand your feelings of loss. Hugs.🤗

    I was born in 1956 so I don't remember much of the 50s, but I do well remember the 60s and into the 70s that my mom used a non-electric version of this on her stove. Back then she bought
    8 O'clock coffee that you ground in the store. The grinder had several settings from fine to course, so you could control how strong it brewed. I'm a big coffee drinker, and to this day, I still like the taste of coffee the perculated way versus our modern coffee makers. I may have to buy one of these! God Bless you and your family in this sad time. We're all glad you're back.

    You really made me laugh after you finished assembling the coffeepot together, plugging it in, and then expected to see something instantaneously 😅. The youngsters nowadays expect instant results on everything. Lol! Growing up before Mr. Coffee machines, my family always had Sunbeam or GE percolators. After the water heated and started to "burp" up, the sound was soothing and the smell of fresh brewed coffee was wonderful! Like the vintage coffee commercial "Maxwell House! Good to the last drop! 😃

    I'm so sorry about your grandma. I lost my mother 18 months ago and my stepfather who I nursed my mother with over the last year, has taken a new girlfriend and has told me he can't stay in touch with me or my brother. Weird. He cared for my mother though so I need to remember that. Alzheimer's is a terrible disease and I know what you went through. I have the same picture of holding my mother's hand as she passed. It was sad but I know she's out of pain. Hugs to you and glad to see you back! You are quickly approaching 100k!!! ❤️ I drink coffee with flavors and creamer! I love the smell of coffee but can't drink it black! I loved the smell of my grandmother's coffee pot! Now I use a keurig.

    My deepest condolences, I’m sure your Grandma will always be close to you in heart and spirit! I’m a coffee percolator collector but I have yet to add that model to my collection, it’s a beautiful pot and the box is beautifully vintage. Here is what I’ve learned in my ‘percolator journey’ as I like to call it, always use ground coffee that is specifically ground for a percolator, the grounds must be coarser than regular drip coffee like the ones you used. Next, always pre-wet your brew basket and place on your stem (little tube/pipe) and cover the small opening on top before starting to add grounds. I usually place my stem and brew basket inside the pot before starting to add grounds as that simplifies it and keeps it in place. When you have the right grind, amount, and coffee of choice, your cup will be amazing and you will enjoy percolated coffee very much. Now it is quite normal to have coffee grind sediment at the bottom of your pot and cup but that’s all part of the experience. Here is another tip though to minimize sediment if you want a cleaner cup, fold a flat bottom coffee filter into a cone shape and snip a small piece of the pointy end with your scissors, then unfold and it should fit your brew basket nicely as the hole will enable your stem to go through it. I hope my comment isn’t so long and annoying to read but I was excited to see your video and your beautiful kitchen! Thank you for sharing ☺️

    Yes! An electric percolator!! My toaster has that same cloth cord! Even if you don't make coffee on a regular basis, you can use it as a hot pot just for water. The long straw-like piece that holds the basket is called the "stem". Always put your finger on the glass top when you pour.Sometimes they fall out and break . You can't find replacement glass tops in the dime store like you could back in the 50's and 60's! The nice thing about an electric percolator vs. a stove top percolator is that they stop boiling when the coffee is brewed. The stop top ones often boil over if you don't keep an eye on them! Have fun!!
