Scat is an old term for using the voice like an instrument that has been used, mainly in jazz for many, many years. Well known people like Ella Fitzgerald, Dizzy Gillespie and Louis Armstrong used it wonderfully. Scatman Crothers was doing this in the 1930's. Love it!

He died of lung cancer in 1997 and he did have a stutter from a child and he heard scat music and practiced and performed the songs in local bars and on one night a song producer heard him and asked if he could sing a song, and he struggled so the producer wrote him that song to perform and over come his stutter, the producer then asked him to go on tour with the song after recording it on album, he then did and managed the tour before returning home and the cancer finally ending his life. That year few months later, but he was working on a second song that unfortunately no body ever heard it except the producer as he was due to record it week after he died unfortunately he never made it.

I believe the song was written about and refers to his very bad stutter during his childhood and later life. He was very worried that he wouldn't make it as a singer because of this. His wife eventually convinced him to inbrace it and talk about it in his music along with Jazz scatt he had learnt to do. Hence the title of this song. So I believe he is saying although you may think you can't do something, do it anyway. Don't let anyone talk you out of what your gut says even if you try to talk yourself out of it! Quite a powerful message really when you think about it.

This is how an American guy went to Europe and became famous in many parts of the world. A million copies of his albums were sold worldwide and his songs hit the charts. John Larkin (Scatman John) had suffred from a severe stutter since early childhood, and scat singing was the way to get rid of this disorder. This song is actually about it. It's a message to those who want to overcome problems like this and believe in themselves. But sadly, if he hadn't died a few years later, he could have released more wonderful songs. After his death his ashes were scattered at sea near Malibu in California...

Scatman John had a bad stutter through most of his life and he was able to either overcome or at least manage it through singing. That’s why he says “everyone stutters one way or the other so here’s my messsge to you: As a matter of fact, don't let nothin' hold you back
If the Scatman can do it, brother, so can you”. You got it right that he had to overcome adversity to get where he was and he tried to inspire people with stuttering issues to push on and not give up.

@@rwxstudio7173 I didn't have to research this because my music teacher in high school in my music development class said "scatting" when listing off vocal practices and we were all like "What did you just say?" and he promptly pulled up Scatman on the MASSIVE studio monitors hooked up to his computer. Gotta say we were all boppin in the middle of class

I used to repeatedly play this song back in the day, one of my favourites! It was always fun to sing along to his lyrics.

I was hooked on this song when it was released. Just one of those feel good factor tracks if you're ever feeling stressed. Love your first reaction, it was like ' what the heck is going on man?' - had me laughing out loud!!

Ah yes.... John Scatman. Dude had a major stuttering problem throughout his life, but somehow turned that negative into a positive with lyrics such as "everyone stutters one way or the other so check out my message to you. As a matter of fact, don't let nothing hold you back. If the Scatman can do it, brother, so can you." Unfortunately, he passed away a few years after the release of this song but his message of positivity and a timeless classic ensured that his legacy will live on forever.
Scatman's song is one of many during the dance craze of the late 90s. If you love this, then you'd definitely love Robin S' "Show Me Love", Haddaway's "What Is Love", Haddaway and Dr. Alban's duet song called "I Love The 90s", Faithless' "Insomnia" and "The Shamen's "Ebeneezer Goode"; all the songs I just listed were popular in the dance genre, especially here in the UK where I live. Thanks and keep up the awesome work.

Scatman John used his voice as an instrument, so you might try the "Timber" video from Coldcut/Hexstatic where working noises (in the wood) were used as percussion.

Scatman John had a stuttering problem, but he learned that singing uses a different part of your brain, which is the opposite side of his brain that made him Stutter. So he made a career out of it. He also slips messages in his songs. Like Scatman's World.

Yeah Scatman is bound to remind you that one, as they were both in black-and-white and came out at around the same time. Whatever was the deal with Edwyn Collins and his one, but very original and cool, hit? I wonder...

I found this song from watching a Good Humor ice cream commercial. “I’m the Good Humor man” was the jingle.
