  • Installing Electric Fence | Raccoons VS Sweet Corn ! How we installed electric fencing to keep the raccoons out of the sweet corn ! If you are growing sweet corn then you know what a pest they can be ! This fence was easy to install and still allows us access to the garden !
    Fence Details: This is a 7 strand electric fence, wired with 17 gauge aluminum wire. The corner posts are 24" in the ground, set in concrete. We used insulated post wraps to keep the electric wires to the outside of the fence so raccoons cannot climb the posts. There are 4 ground wires that are 36" long, driven 5' apart. The charger is a 10 mile solar electric fence charger that runs on a 6v battery. The white support posts are 48" long and made of fiberglass, with 7 twist lock insulators on each.

    The fence looks great. If a raccoon reaches up and grabs the fence , it goes away but if it jumps onto the fence while not touching the ground at the same time it will not be chocked. It can then climb over or thru the rest of the hot wires and not be chocked. It must touch the ground and not wire at the same time. The solution generally used once you are off the ground a foot or so is to alternate every other wire being hot and the other being grounded. Good luck.

    I dunno I got an electric fence around my garden. Only 4 conductors, it helps with Raccoons, but doesn't stop them. They are so damn smart and figure out ways around everything. My main problem is with deer, which it definitely helps with. Many animal's fur is electrically insulating. Sounds cruel, but smearing the wires with peanut butter a couple times a year helps as a deterrent.

    • @BumbleBeeJunction
      @BumbleBeeJunction  2 года назад

      We will be hanging some tin foil tags smeared with peanut butter on the fence to give them fair warning... LOL And I hate to say, we will be doing some trapping as well...

  • @JD-8-1971
    @JD-8-1971 2 года назад +1

    Really nice job! But I will be very surprised to see if it stops raccoons. We took PVC pipe and zip tied suspended chicken wire to the centers made a electrified panel fence around a bunker silo they still find a way in. They dig under or will climb anything close and jump over. We loose tons of silage every year to raccoons and a few years ago they carried a disease to the cattle from going to the bathroom in the silage pile. Lost several calves from that. The best control was hunting and trapping and now that fur is worthless the population has gotten out of hand. The wild turkey flocks are almost gone due to raccoons and bobcats eating eggs and young turkeys.
    Don't get me wrong I love raccoons they are my spirit animal because we are so much alike. We both are short, chubby, have dark rings around are eyes, Will eat about anything, probably carrying rabies, if someone gets too close most likely will bite them and a huge pain in the butt. LOL

      @BumbleBeeJunction  2 года назад +1

      Fortunately, I have some experience trapping as well, so we will be working on them from that angle as well... Living along a creek, the effect is only temporary... New coons will begin moving back in the moment we let up...

      The fence is designed so the wires are completely insulated from the ground (the hot and ground wires are held completely separate) so it (watering) cannot connect to both at the same time... Hard to explain, but it is safe...

    I think it would be beneficial to put a trail cam aimed at those fence lines, not so
    much to watch those Wascally Waccoons getting zapped, but to make sure they
    actually run off. How many times it takes before their persistence runs out.
    Also, if they should get by it somehow, you know what to do next. I guess it might

    With all that expensive equipment, you’re looking at a $5 ear of corn. Why not go to Walmart and buy your corn for 25 cents? There’s got to be a better way to take on coons.
