- Installing Electric Fence | Raccoons VS Sweet Corn ! How we installed electric fencing to keep the raccoons out of the sweet corn ! If you are growing sweet corn then you know what a pest they can be ! This fence was easy to install and still allows us access to the garden !
Fence Details: This is a 7 strand electric fence, wired with 17 gauge aluminum wire. The corner posts are 24" in the ground, set in concrete. We used insulated post wraps to keep the electric wires to the outside of the fence so raccoons cannot climb the posts. There are 4 ground wires that are 36" long, driven 5' apart. The charger is a 10 mile solar electric fence charger that runs on a 6v battery. The white support posts are 48" long and made of fiberglass, with 7 twist lock insulators on each.

Way to go, Mark!!!!
Thanks so much Kevin !
The fence is a work of art.
Thank you so much Virginia !
@@BumbleBeeJunction y’all are most welcome
Handy how many other things wire clothes hangers can be used for. My dad once used a wire clothes hanger to make table cloth clips for holding the table cloth to the picnic table while we were on vacation. You and Mark make an awesome team on your homestead with all you both do. Keep up the great work. 😃👍
That was a great idea ! LOL Thanks so much for all of your support Beth !
Absolutely wonderful. I applaud you both.
Thanks so much Donna !

Thank you so much Carol !
The boys did a wonderful job. Tina and Mark are the 👍awesome team.👍 Thank you both for working so hard to share, instruct and inform all of us.
Checked on my potatoes and all of that rain we got cracked them and they started rotting.. lesson learned and raised beds are in the plans for next year. Have a wonderful weekend❤
Wow... I hate to hear that about your potatoes... We are gonna be pulling the bucket taters soon... Wish us luck... Hope you enjoy your raised beds ! They will make things a lot easier for you !
@@BumbleBeeJunction I think I have been underwatering it this whole time. But the other big container and buckets are doing good. Good luck with yours even though I know you will have lots of wonderful taters
I appreciate your confidence in us, but ya never know till ya kick the buckets over... ahahaha
Nice work on the fence, thing about those raccoons is they take a bite out of one then go after the rest, come back and do it all over again. The corn looks great.
YES... I doubt they would really do much damage IF they were less wasteful !
You are a team! That is what marriage is. Buy I want to tell you I grew cabbage for the first time this year and made your bacon fried cabbage. Everyone loved it. Thank you so much for the great recipe.
So glad to hear they enjoyed it ! We really love it !
I love watching your videos. Mark did a fabulous job on the trellis and fence.
It is wonderful to have a rock solid partner even if they stay behind the scenes most of the time.
My husband is the same way!!!
Great job and wonderful farm!!
Thanks so much for your understanding Denise ! We really appreciate the support !
Amazing fence just have to keep that grass trimmed at the bottom of the fence. NO raccoons and hopefully no squirrels either. Mark is the best, he is always part of this even we don't see him. Thanks Mark.
Yuppers... grass and the corn leaves... Thankfully, it has an audible ticking when something is partially grounding it...
Fantastic work!!! Thanks for the video!!!!!
Awesome I think they did a really great job as well. The corn looking good as always. God bless
Thanks so much !
The best looking electric fence I have ever saw and I have seen many of them in my days.
I dont know how Mark plans things like that without drawings / plans / scribbles... LOL While they were putting it up, he just kept telling me to wait and I would understand when it was done... ahahaha
You two are definitely in love!!!!!!
Coming up on 21 years and she still feeds me AND lets me sleep indoors... I am a lucky man !
Great team work makes the dream work. You guys are a great team as a women and a wife I love the garden but I do need the husband to do those things that I can't. Good work Mark and to the father who is always willing to help its a blessing to have a father/father in law that is there to help with the physical stuff so im giving a shout out to him as well. 👍👍👍 . May God bless you guys and keep you healthy and safe
Thank you so much for your kind words Charlie !
Everybody needs a Mark. Or, should I say everybody like me. 😂😂 I'd rather be the garden brawn instead of garden brain. I'm ok with both, but having someone work out the details while I get dirty is my idea of perfect. ❤️
Thanks so much for your understanding !
Very nice, great job Mark! Teamwork makes the dream work. And yes, please remember to turn that fence off when it's time.
LOL... We dont need any more shocking events... ahahaha
very nice installation. 😎 Thank you.
Good job Mark!
Thanks so much Dale !
Hopefully that will stop those raccoons... they are sneaky buggers..
Have a good evening 🌻🌻🌻
We will likely have to do some trapping along with the fence Michele... Hate to do it, but they took more than their share last year... LOL
Good that you can stop Raccoons from stealing 👍🤩naughty Raccoons 🦝
We sure hope it slows them down at least... LOL
Looking Good
Thanks so much Angie !
Great Mark! You both work so hard on your sucesses
Thanks so much Angie !
👏👏👍👍to mark and the boys👍👍👏👏
Thanks so much Michele ! Appreciate ya !
The fence looks great. If a raccoon reaches up and grabs the fence , it goes away but if it jumps onto the fence while not touching the ground at the same time it will not be chocked. It can then climb over or thru the rest of the hot wires and not be chocked. It must touch the ground and not wire at the same time. The solution generally used once you are off the ground a foot or so is to alternate every other wire being hot and the other being grounded. Good luck.
It would be cool if you put a trail camera on each corner and see how well it works.
I thought that too... It is out there doing its job, but we will never really know what all it did...
I test planted 6 corn plants this year, (small back yard garden). It was a variety called Peaches and Cream and we ate the first two ears last night. Yummy. Each stalk had at least one or two ears. Yours make a tiny bit jealous, in a good way.
Peaches and Cream is a really good variety, and seems to do well in varied conditions ! Good choice !
I dunno I got an electric fence around my garden. Only 4 conductors, it helps with Raccoons, but doesn't stop them. They are so damn smart and figure out ways around everything. My main problem is with deer, which it definitely helps with. Many animal's fur is electrically insulating. Sounds cruel, but smearing the wires with peanut butter a couple times a year helps as a deterrent.
We will be hanging some tin foil tags smeared with peanut butter on the fence to give them fair warning... LOL And I hate to say, we will be doing some trapping as well...
Really nice job! But I will be very surprised to see if it stops raccoons. We took PVC pipe and zip tied suspended chicken wire to the centers made a electrified panel fence around a bunker silo they still find a way in. They dig under or will climb anything close and jump over. We loose tons of silage every year to raccoons and a few years ago they carried a disease to the cattle from going to the bathroom in the silage pile. Lost several calves from that. The best control was hunting and trapping and now that fur is worthless the population has gotten out of hand. The wild turkey flocks are almost gone due to raccoons and bobcats eating eggs and young turkeys.
Don't get me wrong I love raccoons they are my spirit animal because we are so much alike. We both are short, chubby, have dark rings around are eyes, Will eat about anything, probably carrying rabies, if someone gets too close most likely will bite them and a huge pain in the butt. LOL
Fortunately, I have some experience trapping as well, so we will be working on them from that angle as well... Living along a creek, the effect is only temporary... New coons will begin moving back in the moment we let up...
Very professional job. Neat, inspiring! - I really like the insulators around the wood posts. Ive not been able to find them. Do you mind sharing what they are called or the manufacturer? Really nice!
www.premier1supplies.com/p/strainrite-activator-strap-post-insulator?cat_id=46 This is the best price I could find on them for you...
Did it work? Are the plastic parts that hold the aluminum wire necessary? Trying to figure out my own system.
How do you water the corn without shorting out the fence? Corn looks great!!
The fence is designed so the wires are completely insulated from the ground (the hot and ground wires are held completely separate) so it (watering) cannot connect to both at the same time... Hard to explain, but it is safe...
How is Mark feeling? We pray for you both every night during our family prayer time.
Hi Mary... I am doing ok... The TENS therapy seems to be helping and I am looking into some physical therapy through the VA... I have no intention of giving up the use of an arm, so please know that I well, and fighting it tooth and nail...
I'm planning on this for my 2 acre sweet corn patch this year. how did it all work out for you all?
We did not have any coon damage... Note we were also box trapping at the same time, especially as it came ripe...
@@BumbleBeeJunction I think I'm going to do the same. Get a few traps set up around the plots
How big is your corn field? It is so beautiful. Wish I had the room.
It is roughly 20 by 80... Maybe a little bigger...
I think it would be beneficial to put a trail cam aimed at those fence lines, not so
much to watch those Wascally Waccoons getting zapped, but to make sure they
actually run off. How many times it takes before their persistence runs out.
Also, if they should get by it somehow, you know what to do next. I guess it might
be educational to know how high they can jump as well .👀 😄😃😃
Well done Mark and Dad 👍👍👍👍👍
TYFS Tina, Mark and Rosa
I might look into getting some... They are kinda pricey... We will be doing some trapping along the way as well...
I wish I had a Mark at home.
I never thought about renting him out as another source of income on the homestead... Hmmmmmm......
Great job gentlemen on the fence. Dear Tina and Mark,
I admire your marriage. It show cases what an honest loving marriage is all about .mutual support, honor, respect, encouragement all growing into mature love and admeration one for another.
Its been a road filled with adventures of all sorts, but we love it ! Thank you so much for all of your support Laurrene !
A 22 caliber would of been way cheaper!
Agreed... Living along a creek, they fill back in about as fast as we clear them out... The fence may help some... I'll be trapping as well... And yes, I may spend a night or two sitting up with the .22 as well...
👏
Thank you for watching Veronica !
Go mark go lol
LOL... I am always lurking in the shadows somewhere... ahahaha Thanks for watching !
Are you doing anything to keep weeds out of the corn?
We feed corn three times... Once at planting, once at knee high, and once when its about 30% tasseled... We weed once, when it is about knee high... After than, it can compete fine with what weeds are left...
Can you set up the camera so we can see how exactly Mark and you do things like garden? You don't always have to speak. Sometimes just by watching we can all learn. Also do you have a list of what garden products you use to fertilize and to treat for bug infestations? I love your garden btw!!!!!!!!!!
We have a lot of videos showing what we do (in terms of how we do it)... The fence just got done on the side, more or less... We primarily fertilize with Jobes Tomato and Vegetable on a weekly basis... And as for pests, we use liquid Sevin concentrate until the plants put on edilbes, and then we switch to BT with is considered garden safe / organic... I hope that helps...
If you don't want to hear her brag on her man you can toggle the volume.
That's one heavy duty fence. Looks like your going to have fried raccoon for dinner one night or two. Heeeee. I've never seen anyone have that many strings of wires. Wow. That's serious stuff. LOL. No body's getting that corn. Mark you did this military style. Salute, High 5. 😂. Too bad you can't put a security code and alarm on electric box, so the 2 legged creatures don't get your corn. But, that's why you have pew, pews. Bambam. Honey, we have new fertilizer for the garden. Heeeee.
LOL... I fear we will have to do some trapping also, but we are determined not to share our corn harvest again this year... Last year they took for more than their share...
@@BumbleBeeJunction I pray the raccoons don't come after the chickens. Hungry raccoons are dangerous. Especially if they have babies to feed. You be careful walking around at night. Keep protection close. G-D Bless
Zap! Be that tickled a bit😀
LOL... I touched it... A 10 mile charger on that short a fence is akin to "scald" ! ahahahaha
With all that expensive equipment, you’re looking at a $5 ear of corn. Why not go to Walmart and buy your corn for 25 cents? There’s got to be a better way to take on coons.
