Great concept! Another trick I learned years ago if you are pressed for space, deer won't jump over a fence if they aren't sure where the top is, a moderately tall fence with small wires confuses them and keeps them out.
@@babsofkansas9401 Deer (like most prey animals) have poor depth perception due to the location of the eyes on the side of their heads. Examples of that poor depth perception would be all the deer hit by cars, or you can find plenty of videos where deer are repeatedly ramming their heads into a chainlink fence or similar. So with a 3D fence like this they are unable to discern just how far away those back wires are and thus avoid the fence.
This is really good!! Unfortunately for me… our deer population is growing, both neighbors opposite me feed these deer… We had this setup and the deer learned to jump it… then we installed 8 ft pvc pipe over the top of the posts… ran a 2ft rabbit fence around the bottom perimeter and 5ft heavy duty deer netting around the perimeter for a total of 7ft tall rabbit/deer netting fence… we wired the rabbit fence to the deer netting too … this lasted about 4 years… the deer learned to jump this fence and learned to breach the fence between the deer netting and rabbit fence… we set up a trail camera… the deer actually pawed at the fence to break open a spot… when we would catch one in the garden they jumped through the deer netting like it was nothing… This year we are installing a new 8 ft 4x4 post fence with cattle panels and welded wire fence along the bottom 4ft … Thank you for letting me tell my experience… To those considering deer netting… don’t do it! lol I researched it some and now its recommended to put up 8ft fence as opposed to a 7ft one… Its so frustrating to have your hard work destroyed overnight…

Hi, Great Video. I dont understand your comment about connecting the three strands of wire. Is it that the strands are only connected to each other on the start post, and then end on the final post.? Thanks
The deer ate EVERYTHING this past year. Even rhododendrons, junipers, and hemlocks. Never seen this for 23 years here in central NH. Anyway, I put up a 6’ black poly mesh fence with posts made from 1-2” maple saplings from the woods. About 600 ft total, mostly through woods so I had to do a little cutting and cleaning. At first it seemed to work, but on a few occasions they jump the fence and go on an all-you-can-eat binge of our flowers, blackberries, daylillies, apple trees, etc. They don’t really jump over the fence as much as just crash into it, as the fence gets torn about half way down. So now I just ordered the poly-SS braided wire and screw in clips, along with an AC charger that I will plug into a garage outlet. My question is this: should I put the wire at average deer “nose height” of about 40”, or should I put it at the top of the fence at about 66” from the ground? Do they actually need to touch it and get zapped? or, can they sense the electricity just by being 6-12” inches from it? I’m already tired of fixing torn up poly fencing and just want to put a stop to the deer invasions for good. I’m hoping just a single electrified wire run along the existing poly fence will keep them from crashing/tearing the fence. I saw a young doe on my Ring camera this morning. She crashed the fence around 4:30 am, walked around and ate a huge breakfast of our plants, and hopped back out at exactly the same place where she ripped the fence to get it. Help!!
Nice work kids, I see Mrs Stoney Ridge was doing her Price is right modeling pose with the fence post near the end of the video, Bob Barker would be proud.
If you leave any of the spade of a t post exposed above the ground keep all rubber tires away from the base of the post. That will ruin the toughest tractor tire. Trust me. I recommend driving them all the way in.
Josh: how has your deer fence held up the past two years? any changes or modifications? I'm getting ready to install on myself. Also have the option of going solar or house current 100. Your recommendation? thx. Geo

We set up a 3d fence few weeks ago. Our deer pressure is so high that the deer keep trying to go through the electric fence. I've heard them scream when they hit it and get zapped, and they've knocked the lines down, bent u-posts, and broken insulator clips three times now.
Hi Josh - what about grounding rods? Also - the first post where you run vertically/from top to bottom of t-post to tie in your strands - how do you attach h the rest to that? Is it one continuous or 3 separate strands all connecting back to your vertical? Thanks for your help/video
yep, you can ground it to a post or a ground rod, just run your strands and connect them all by running a wire up the post to connect all the strands of poly electric. It will make more sense once you've built this my friend...super super simple.....I also connect all the wires in 2 or 3 places by running wire up the insulators vertically that way we're getting juice to the entire fence. Again...when ya build this it will be super simple to ya. I caution you on the ground rod....if you're gonna use a ground rod be sure you drive it in a place that you can leave it permanent and not hit with the mower or trip over in the future
Thanks for the video. About how far did you space your T posts? Did they seem sturdy enough without having wooden posts for corners and gates? I hope you have a great spring!
Nice set up. Speaking from experience in my area the best thing we've used was a single strand of that poly wire but bigger diameter around garden and that's it. Set it high enough to where they can kinda duck under (at least in my area deer rather go under than jump ) that way their ears neck or back will touch get a pop and they are gone they don't even try to jump it after that.

not to be sarcastic...but how is a fence that's 18 inches off the ground gonna keep out small animals my friend? It's not buddy...you need a lower wire to accomplish that
Ok, question. You run the wire down the post to the next insulator/row. If that wire touches the t-post, won't that ground out the system, making it less uh... snappy? I've always connected the wires in between the span of t-posts, but I've never used poly wire either. I don't know if you can cut and splice pieces in like you can with regular electric fence wire.
You are 100% correct and I have no clue why nobody else has mentioned this. Wrapping them sound the post will literally cause the energizer to detect a ground fault and will stop the power almost entirely. Even if you don’t have a smart energizer/charger, it will still ground fault and make the system pointless. Your entire conductive system must be “floating” or insulated from the posts. I feel bad all these people are wasting their time installing their fence all to just short it to ground. Also, there’s nothing different about polywire compared to regular wire when it comes to electrical system. They behave the same way, polywire is just lighter and easier to work with.

I have no clue what you mean by wrapping your polywire around the t-posts. You are essentially grounding your entire system throughout so it won’t work at all. There’s a reason we use insulators to keep your conductors from touching the metal t-posts. By wrapping your live polywire around the post you are shorting the entire system. I’m sure I misunderstood what you meant because that for sure will not work..
Can you provide the details on your charger? We found .1 and .4 joule chargers pushing 2-3000 volts but it looks like that is only good for livestock. We read, and the makers say, that deer need 5,000 volts. We only need 2-3 miles charger but they don't come with voltage over 2-3,000...what are you using?

It would be tough to put up and take down every season....eventually we'll have a better system surrounding our home and yard parameter ....winter time project though...in the woods...right now it's so hot and humid...cant do much of anything
Yeah, you're right, it would be a booger to put up and take down. I hear you on this heat. It is 100-105 all this week in Southwest Arkansas. Usually doesn't get this hot until the end of July!
Electrifying barbed wire is illegal in many states because someone could get hooked on it and not be able to get away from the fence. Better to just use wire designed for electric fences
Enjoy your video's but have a question ..I saw where you wrapped each insulator going down the first post ..but you didn't show after you went around the bottom ..did you just go up the posts from the 18 inches then up that posts to the 36 inch one then around to the 54 ..all the way around ?? Just double checking I understood right. .. could you go out more than 36 inches ..I have a 46 inch cutter on my garden tractor and a 60 inches on my big tractor mower decks.???

@@StoneyRidgeFarmerI really wish you would address this issue: this will not work as an electric fence. When you wrap your polywire around a metal t-post you have now shorted the system to ground.
I think your rooster has a bit of "ham" in him, Josh. He seems to know when you are filming. lol Interesting fence vlog.
That fence managed to confuse ME, besides the deer.... 🙂... I didn't get it....
Mrs. Stoney ridge must be a price is right model
Lol I commented the same thing
How's the dam holding up?
Good...rain subsided and everything is good
Thanks for posting this neat system.
That rooster is gonna taste really good.
I hope this works I've lost 30 plants full of tomatoes.
my deer don't touch my tomatoes for some reason
@@StoneyRidgeFarmer I grew German Johnsons and a German stripe they're a Sweet Tomato that's the only ones they eat unfortunately I grew quite a few of them I've tried everything
What about a door?
Really wish you would have taken it one step further and showed how to hook it up as an electric fence. Otherwise a good video but in the end Im still looking for another video that completes the job
Uh......you just hook it up to an electric fence charger brotha...have a good ground rod and hook up 2 wires
@@StoneyRidgeFarmerI really wish you would address this issue: this will not work as an electric fence. When you wrap your polywire around a metal t-post you have now shorted the system to ground. Your conductor system (polywire) absolutely has to be “floating” or insulated from all the t-posts. Or have I misunderstood what you meant entirely?
I hope to god nothing important is buried @ 1foot depth on my land. Everything important should be 3+ feet deep.
Yeah it’s not rocket appliances
If an electric line is buried that shallow it deserves to be hit!
hmmm....I'm not so sure we're talking about karma with the power company my brotha
Lose the commercials. ....and that rooster.
1200 videos on this channel....click skip ad brotha and move on...in case you're new to youtube...you get ads unless you pay for youtube premium...that's what I do and I see no ads....it's a simply way to get rid of them and well worth it. Complaining about ads on youtube is like complaining about ads on TV...it's not gonna do ya any good buddy. Ads pay for this content....I'm not out here working, filming and editing for free. This vid is the result of $10k worth of filming and editing equipment. Just skip ad or go premium....you won't regret premium!!
Deer run right through that wire.
Whoooooooa !
Mis Stoney Ridge is a awesome Vana White josh lol
I love Mrs Stoney Ridge!
I think you needed a little more of the actual running of the wire for a couple of the posts for us city slickers...
Yeah, did he go up and down the post each time, or just on the first one? No idea. Too much talking and not enough clear explanation. Diagrams or words on the vid would help.
I'm a country boy and agree with the need for more information.
Agree, and I'm a country boy.
Marsh Wetland just on frist one
Could you put down a strip of Agri fabric before putting the fence post in to save the weed eating,or would the Agri fabric ground the electrical current?
Lmao. Big man with a beard selling razors. Nice!
Kind of ridiculous, right?
How do you keep the rabbits and raccoons out?
Looks like Mrs. Stoney Ridge is doing all the heavy lifting.
Worthy watching! ✌🏽”Laser-Beam”✌🏽😂
Man you are one lucky dude. Nice big farm and one beautiful lady to share life with...... Wow.
Have you got one of those The Price is Right models behind you there?
Um, they sell 10 ft T posts. Does "get the tallest post you can get" remain you advice? T-post pounding atop a ladder?
one thing is for sure, sarcasm won't keep them out 😂👍😉
What did you do about a door or entrance to the garden for equipment?
just loosen the wire, drive right over or make yourself a little gate
Doesn’t work for us. We’re not electric, but our inside and outside fences measure up to yours. Interesting idea but W/OUT electricity it doesn’t work for us.
you don't know about solar electric fence chargers? This is what I use to fence in over 80 acres on the farm...here'a a link to a solar fence charger from my amazon affiliate page: amzn.to/3FAEkW9
Thanks for the great info.
