There was a thought in southern Idaho that creek willows had to go because of the water they used. The reality is that the willows acted as a " plug" to hold water in adjoining meadows. When the willows went the tremendous trout fishery went with it due to lack of cover the willows also prevented evaporation of creek water. Makes one sad to think one will not catch those 4& 5 lb. Trout l heard stories about.

The problem with the Yellowstone willows wasn't elk, it was bison. Large areas of Yellowstone willows are not recovering after the wolf reintroduction. It's more the small willow areas what are improving. Still, with fewer elk, now NPS is raising the bison population numbers. It wasn't by nature, but an by the intention of NPS. Beaver are not a one-critter-fits-all solution. In some areas, beaver can take up all the water and little or nothing gets downstream. Also, during the plains bison era, bison were largely limited to areas near the rivers. Goodnight, and Lewis and Clark before him, traveled along rivers and from river to river for good reason, rather than moving from spring to spring. Some springs are seasonal. The distribution of bison was much more limited back then. Ranchers have built dams and redirected water to make much more of the landscape productive for livestock, and thus, wildlife. However, ranchers do not generally keep pipelines and irrigation year-round, so they limit the utility of vast areas to wildlife. Natural things are not simple. Love the information on teepee ring sizes relating to when horses returned to North America. The last known native horse was Equus lambei. It was pony-sized and disappeared with most of the Pleistocene megafauna.
Fires. Almost every area of the west burned at least once every 20 years. When you burn a forest often, the fire keeps the undergrowth ( fire fuel load ) down. The fires are not as catastrophic because there isn’t as much to burn. Fires burn very fast and not as hot.
What he said ^^^ Frequent mild fires kill brush and seedling trees, while not killing mature trees. The result is a grassy understory with large, scattered mature trees.
I am a biology major. We went on field trips but never heard of the information presented in this video. It should be REQUIRED watching for every biology major. Period.
@@LifeintheWest Forestry major in late 70's and early 80's. They may have meant well (or not) but most of what they were teaching us was wrong wrong wrong!
I agree that college/university education is limited. Hands on and observation makes each of us working a land i.e. farmers, ranchers,, a scientist, really. I have a minor in biology ( been a teacher of science) and I know ecosystems are all different and they can change with environmental conditions. They have. We have seen that runoff from chemicals used by agriculture can destroy an ecosystem. . Yes, man has changed environment and ecosystems with irresponsible care of our earth. There is no debate on that. Responsible, regenerative farming is the best for the planet.
I almost didn’t watch the video because I thought I couldn’t watch for 45 min but, as I watched and learned I wanted more and more. Thank you for making this video. I learned a lot from it. Great work!!
I wouldn’t necessarily agree that these lessons or myths are taught and spread in college. Many are currently being spread by influencers and social media. Previously it was magazines, editorials, and even books. Reputable colleges are based off of facts and research proving or disproving theories. Colleges that do a bad job of getting their students to retain and understand the facts get a bad reputation. Their students may have graduated and a diploma but it doesn’t mean they are well educated. Those students generally aren’t that successful and end up stagnant career, or working outside of their field studied. We must always question the accuracy of information, reputation of the teacher or elder, and whether the curriculum is based on facts. Just because someone wrote a book, doesn’t mean that it’s factual. Same as influencers, editors, etc. they are only as good as the facts they present, unless they are entertaining, then we have to be critical of how serious to take the information they provide. A person can have an amazing career and life without college or tech school. It all depends on how hard that person works and what profession they want to have. College should not be looked at as something all people need to go to and graduate. For many professions it’s a waste of money and time, people may have an opportunity to learn what they need to by a mentor, or a few classes, or even a great set of videos. Much of the mythical things and crazy ideas being talked about as being taught in college is simply false. A good college teaches facts and how to think critically, not what to think. Just Say’n 🇺🇸🦅🇺🇸
Problem with your argument, is that there aren’t a lot of “good” Colleges. If there were, we wouldn’t have to listen to this material, because educated people would be filling the information-void .
There are about 6,000 university/colleges in the United States. What's the percentage that is bad, peterweb? I've never seen data on this, so I'm definitely interested.
@@peterwebb8732 I’ve worked at both colleges and tech schools. Knowing what I know now, I would NEVER recommend regular college/university. Unless you plan on being a doctor or engineer, it really is a waste of money. I had no idea until I worked at the Tech (trade) school. honestly, I recommend if you want to be a doctor, go through the military (if you’re accepted) once you have your bachelors.
Thank you. Is was so fascinating, eye-opening. GREAT video. Keep up the great work. It's great (how many times can I say Great😅). Information even to the choir. 🎉😊
I have a theory that the massive bison herds were at historic all time high when Europeans started documenting the prairies. European diseases drastically reduced the indigenous human population throughout the continent prior to most of it being seen first hand by Europeans. The resulting massive drop in number of native people who had been managing and harvesting the bison could have led to an unprecedented bison population explosion.
A lot of what you guys are talking about here is also some of what the group called strong towns talks about. GovCorp, e g. Walmart, sucks out all the value of a region and it doesn't get dispersed throughout the neighborhood. And when all the value is sucked out they close shop next thing you know you have a vacant building for several years. Rinse recycle repeat
I love all of you videos, actually live In Florida and I’m hoping to take a bus up to Montana. I was wondering if you knew any housing ranch developments
I want it all. I want to see ranchers be successful and pass their legacy down to future generations. I want grizzly bear and black bears to thrive and wolves also. I want hunters to have great opportunities. Am I asking too much? What technologies are available are to make predators leave ranchers stock alone?
Man, keep putting this stuff out there! I watched basic scientific facts take a second seat to emotion and fear in the Flint “lead in the water” crisis. And to this day when I explain the scientific facts no one believes them-the fear and emotion (lies) have now become “fact”. Sad.
Love the video trinity, however, it is a little misleading to say that college today still teaches these myths about the natural world. It is more accurate to say that the general public has these myths ingrained from the past. Most of these myths resulted from out-dated ideas of the mid-20th century that the public has ran with. Not saying college is always right, but a lot of the time, they aren’t the ones spreading these myths. Or at least, the colleges that actually teach environmental classes based off of actual facts.
College is what articulated many such myths to me back in the day.... Biggest source of propaganda there is, even feeds the mass media. Not every college is this corrupt, but seems that most are.
As long as the facts are facts. The issue is that when we find new truths, the old "facts" aren't being replaced. Then another issue is when new truths aren't facts! We are actually not very smart or knowledgeable. Most of the time, we are just bumbling through. Here is a fact: science has been more often wrong than right. It's just right until we find out that it is wrong. If science were right... engineers would never design parts that fail on cars... And yet... cars still break.
That is a very fair point, it is always important to consider the biases of those who proclaim facts. Science is also always changing and evolving, looking for ways to prove its past self wrong. However, what I was trying to say is that most colleges teachings align with what is said in the video. Most ecology student understand why trees may not benefit certain environments, or natures inherent unpredictability. Ask any sustainable agriculture major on the benefits of pasture grazing, and you’ll be there the whole week! To blame college for the spreading of these myths are simply untrue, or in the very least, leaving vital information out of the equation.
Love, love , this video. And love the history. That old trail was so great to see. It would be a wonderful field trip with kids. We did a lot of those when I homeschooled. Thanks
I guess college changed I grew up taking field trips to farms and other industries in elementary school and was saden at the waste of time I felt in college but they werent teaching the bs they do now, I left once I saw that institutions seemed more political then actually education facilities. I felt bad for the youth just arriving as there is incredible talent in our youth but we arent recognizing it or nurturing their true potential.
Well done, excellent information. The gentleman you were with is a wealth of knowledge. I would have like to hear him talk more. Les From Eastern Oregon.
An anecdote about the wolves: Wolves are pretty common around my parents’ cattle farm in Minnesota, but only the coyotes prey on the livestock. The bears and wolves aren’t an issue at all, unless you sneak up on a bear that is… I love your videos btw. I think some of my comments come across as confrontational but I don’t intend them to be that way. 😊
Straw man video. I did not hear any of these myths in college, in fact I heard the complete opposite of a couple of them. By way of constructive suggestion, stick to ranching videos; they are excellent and informative. You get way out over your skis when you start talking politics, macroeconomics, education, etc.
Thanks for making this video. There's a lot to it and wish so many more people could see it. Beautiful country and that trail with the teepee sites was really interesting. I didn't realize there were so many moving that it would make a trail.
I don’t know where you went to college or what college you got your information from, but none of these myths are taught in any respectable institution. Or maybe you just didn’t understand the lessons? There are other ways to share what you yourself know without bashing higher education. 🙄
How did you get so greatly intelligent? More importantly, why has no one snagged you to guest teach classes in colleges that are creating the future scientists? Your knowledge should be captured in textbooks and be preserved and expanded. People that have never spent time out in the real world and seeing how nature actually functions should not be teaching, they are only nurturing the misinformation trying to make it fact when it is actually fiction.
Thank you. And yes. College is FULL of knowledge, but knowledge alone is not always the answer. Sometimes we need to use wisdom to make knowledge beneficial.
Yeah unfortunately no matter how much we preach about righteousness greedy mankind will continue to destroy their surroundings & everyone in it for their own selfishness mainly benefitting a few very few people! Jehovah God says though I will destroy those destroying the earth! And he will return the eRthback to a paradise. This is how he intended it to be for mankind kind & the meek will inherit the earth! ❤😊❤❤😊
contract evolved into a system To have a contract one must have full-disclosure, know what you are signing. it must be beneficial, if it’s not beneficial it will destroy the contract, the contractor, suicidal? It must also have consent. These are an impossibility when everything is always creatively changing. If a woman gives consent to a man to have sex with him, does that mean the man can have sex with her any place, anytime, anywhere, anyhow, or can her consent creatively change? Of course it can! the legal political system needed to make the illusion that a contract can have full-disclosure, have consent, and be beneficial always. the illusion of a system, a place where everything is always the same, where nothing ever creatively changes, a dead pool of water? it’s totally delusional, a lie. look at everything in life, everything is always creatively changing, your hair, your movement, the leaves on trees, oceans, streams, lakes, air, clouds, all life. try to do anything the same again? is the weather the same? people in same place? stars the same? a system is totally impossible, so is a contract. all contracts can get cancelled, just need to learn how, show your children.

Historically, what kept the trees in check? Was it larger herds of elk and Moose?
Fire. Humans decided to try and control nature by putting out all natural caused fires such as by lightning strikes.
Fires. Almost every area of the west burned at least once every 20 years. When you burn a forest often, the fire keeps the undergrowth ( fire fuel load ) down. The fires are not as catastrophic because there isn’t as much to burn. Fires burn very fast and not as hot.
What he said ^^^
Frequent mild fires kill brush and seedling trees, while not killing mature trees. The result is a grassy understory with large, scattered mature trees.
Thank you for getting out and showing us the flowers that burst open. So interesting.
Yeah. I thought the Prairie Smoke was a cool flower.
I am a biology major. We went on field trips but never heard of the information presented in this video. It should be REQUIRED watching for every biology major. Period.
I agree. Thank you for your thoughts.
@@LifeintheWest Forestry major in late 70's and early 80's. They may have meant well (or not) but most of what they were teaching us was wrong wrong wrong!
Another GREAT VIDEO!!!
Thank you. I am glad you enjoyed it.
Great job, thank Trinity. I hope the know it all listening.
😄
In Florida hurricanes change nature annually.
Thanks Trinity 🌎😇. All good soil all over and many trees.
This Video is a “masters class”. Great detail of information !! H.
Thanks Trinity, good info ❤
I like that guys hat, It has some dirt on it. It looks like a hat that a guy named Mike would wear.😁
Simply great vlog
Thanks for the information
👍👍👍
Why would college want to teach you myths?
Because the teachers like those myths.
Thanks for the update of the myths about nature. And Mike has some good cattle and sheep dogs. Take care
Perhaps the greatest book ever written on livestock and revitalization of grasslands is the book titled Holistic Management by Allan Savory.
Didn't forget the sheep, they used them!
Always amazes me how nobody ever talks about the impacts of the barbwire fence on the ecosystems of the west...
So much to learn, so much to understand 🇺🇸❤️ Thank you
Yes. I learn so much by just doing what I do. I never want to stop learning.
@@LifeintheWest Thank you for your journey 🇺🇸
Please study- Kristen Dirksen and Bryce Langston thanks
Thanks
Great video sir
Man, keep putting this stuff out there!
I watched basic scientific facts take a second seat to emotion and fear in the Flint “lead in the water” crisis.
And to this day when I explain the scientific facts no one believes them-the fear and emotion (lies) have now become “fact”. Sad.
I watched this before not the rattlesnake video.
“Common knowledge” is often what is taught in the early years of school, taught by teachers who got their knowledge from college decades ago

Thanks for bringing the truth out in an insane world !
Great show tho u !!!
Thank you.
Good video Trinity! I hope this rancher does everything in his power to make sure this land is never chopped up and developed.
Well done, excellent information. The gentleman you were with is a wealth of knowledge. I would have like to hear him talk more.
Les From Eastern Oregon.
Yes. Mike is a wealth of information and experience for sure!
Thanks for bringing the truth out in an obvious insane world.
Really love the direction you took this channel.
An anecdote about the wolves: Wolves are pretty common around my parents’ cattle farm in Minnesota, but only the coyotes prey on the livestock. The bears and wolves aren’t an issue at all, unless you sneak up on a bear that is…
I love your videos btw. I think some of my comments come across as confrontational but I don’t intend them to be that way. 😊
Thanks for sticking up for the wolves panda bears of course
This IS VERY IMPORTANT INFORMATION TO hear about!! I'm SOOO glad you made this video ❤ HAPPY TRAILS TO YOU 🐴 🐮 🐮 🐮
Straw man video.
How to look and sound like a boomer without telling us you’re a boomer.
What’s college. Idk if it’s even real
contract evolved into a system
To have a contract one must have full-disclosure, know what you are signing. it must be beneficial, if it’s not beneficial it will destroy the contract, the contractor, suicidal?
You are becoming one of my favorite channels to watch and follow. I don’t mean to complain but please turn off the side by side when sitting still 😂. Please keep up the hard work!
Went to Uni. Told my kids. Not gonna pay for college. You go, you pay.
No wisdom to be found in ANY classroom today.
Thanks for this, because “common sense” has become an oxymoron.
The truth works its way to the surface. So sad the vitriolic talk towards him.

BEST 43 MINUTES OF EDUCATION. THANKS
The evidence is there that a lot of the features on earth were created very fast by a great flood, as seen in the Grand Canyon.
The Grand Canyon is evidence of a long, slow process of erosion over thousands of years.
Great topic. This is where college kids needs to go to get educated 👍
Sounds to me like God knew what he was doing during his creation process
Great video 'lesson' Trinity sir... Personally liked the section covering grazing practices. Seems similar to AMP grazing which an uncle taught us 'many moons' ago. It's awesome imo.. And how you explained the management in much more depth regarding all the other regional grazers & browsers, I think that was awesome! 💯 🥸🐊
