  • Working in the cigar industry has given me the chance to talk with a lot of people. I meet a lot of people who think the way I do, but it's always a privilege to chat with people who disagree with me. In this video, I will take you through an email exchange I had with an anti-cigar person who has been commenting on my videos and emailing my customer service team. Here is what she had to say, and how I responded.

    Tim,
This was a perfect response. You validated her opinions/feelings on the matter, stuck up for your own, and offered a direction she can use that energy towards something of true concern. This is the best way to respond to people like this.

It would be interesting to know what her response was on the FDA study Tim mentioned. It was a study conducted by the FDA after all, and she did mention they are heroes. I haven't smoked anything my whole life and started smoking cigars at 58. It bothers me that someone believes they have a right to make or force their will on what I do in my life. Tim makes a great point when he mentions the scores of people who consume sugar daily and as a result suffer a multitude of health issues because of it. If those, like Sarah, are so imbued by their own feeling of moral superiority why don't they point their finger at the real culprits that do harm.

Good for you, Tim. I'm cigar smoker. Like most of my BOTL and SOTL we are one of the most tolerant groups as opposed to what most non-cigar smokers think we are, small minded and close doored. Is that w word? 😁 I can only speak for myself, but I would never smoke around a person who found it annoying or feared for their health. Conversely, if I'm not, don't tell me what to do. I'm an adult who is enjoying a legal adult product. You are spot on about the FDA itself mentioning the reduced health risk from moderate cigar smoking and the blind eye and deaf ear of this person on greater health abuses that harm more people. Another comment mentioned this person's abject lack of caring for the economic impact that would destroy the livelihoods of countless people in this country not to mention the tsunami of economic devastation in the countries producing cigars. I commend your response. I don't think you'll have success. You're open to debate. She's only wants a monologue.

  • @Braveheart69

Great response, Tim! You're still looking good!
I am a lifelong non smoker. I even tried doing cigars in college, if Tiparillos can be called cigars in your world. I merely liked the aroma of them while in a dank old college building in the city of Chicago. But the smell of cigarette smoke and the people who smoke them has always been offensive to me. In much the same way, the odor of marijuana being smoked makes me nauseous. I supported the outlawing in Arizona of smoking in public buildings decades ago because it allowed me to better enjoy a meal in a restaurant without the stink of cigarette smoke. But I would never support outlawing a cigar parlor, a business model which is pretty much the offshoot of the public smoking ban.
    You're welcome!
In America, I think people should be free to do as they wish as long as it doesn't infringe on the rights of others. As a commercial photographer, I turned down many lucrative assignments to provide advertising photography for tobacco and alcohol companies. Accepting money from such companies would make me partly responsible for the societal ills that result by their use. So I chose to abstain on principle. But the one thing that has motivated me the most to be actively anti-tobacco is that when I lived on Lincoln drive, a busy thoroughfare during rush hour, my front yard would manage to be the collection point for hundreds of cigarette butts carried by the winds of passing cars after being discarded by irresponsible smokers who treat our world like an ashtray. One time, after witnessing a driver dump his ashtray in the street at an intersection, I walked up to his open window and dumped my full litter bag in his lap.
I could get away with that openly carrying a firearm on my hip.
Somehow, for some reason, Sara has made your company her "mission in life". Yes, she really needs some perspective given so many other more serious problems she could choose to be an activist about. I think you did a good job pointing that out in a very courteous manner. I would be more the type to have told her to "Get _____ ed.", but you know me. You have a better level of patience than I do with such annoying people. Hope she takes the hint and moves on.
I wish you success in your business and your family well.

When I tell people that I enjoy an occasional cigar and I get the "what about your health" response. I like to pull out and drink from my flask and say "the whiskey will kill me first". I don't even keep alcohol in my flask anymore, I just got addicted to seeing peoples faces when it was a genuine response from my harder drinking days.

Hello Tim! I happen to drop by this video in reference to this "Sara" person who is very anti-cigar. I wanted to listen to your comment(s) as I too noticed this "Sara" person writing on my RUclips channel under, "Cigar Rights of America" that she stated the exact same thing that you mentioned. Seems as if she's going to different cigar channels and making her point of view as to if we don't have our own judgement in what is good and what is not. Great response from you and I applaud you and your staff! I was going to reply back to "Sara" from my channel but then I said to myself, "Oh she's just an individual that has no knowledge and one sided." Here's a secret, I've been smoking cigars since the age of 14, and every time I get my lungs checked for any surgeries I always get told that I have one of the cleanest lungs. My Dad also smoked cigars at the age of 14 while he was in Cuba and so did all of my other relatives, again, while they resided in Cuba. I'm glad I came to your video to see how you responded, and I must say, it was a superb response!
    Thank you,

In my opinion you responded quite well Tim. You were direct but not aggressive. You provided information as well as sources. And you set forth the premise of our freedoms to make our own choices not just as American, but as humans. If we are to limit anything dangerous that could have long term negative effects or death, what in life would we even do? Driving is dangerous. Football is dangerous. Motorsport are dangerous. Hell, more people slip in the tub and are hurt or killed than you can imagine. So by that sense, cleanliness is dangerous… Some people have an issue with certain things that typically stems from a very narrowly viewed life experience they have had. Because of this they will demonize that certain thing and insist it be stricken from the earth. But just as we are free to have a smoke, those individuals are free to dislike it. It sure would be nice if they did it more quietly though.

Tim, measured and respectful response to Sara(h). Bravo. But I would say to Sara(h) that adults have been bombarded with the government’s dire warnings about tobacco use. We are aware of the risks. We have also chosen to slow our lives down, take a bit of time to relax and have a cigar, typically in the company of like minded people. It’s nice to step out of the high pressure hustle and bustle of every day and just relax. How you relax is not a concern of mine, and conversely I expect the same courtesy. Live and let live Sara(h). There are causes out in this world that are far more concerning and deadly than the cigar you so vociferously dislike.

I am sixty-two soon to be sixty-three, I've been smoking cigars since the age of eighteen and have every tooth I was born with. The medical issues I do have are the byproduct of military service, not smoking cigars. I always find it sad that people have such little and boring lives that they have nothing better to do than to concern themselves with the legal enjoyment of other people. I enjoy my cigars, and no matter what this fascist government nor there agents, the CDC, the CIA, the FBI, nor the FDA, do it will never stop me from enjoying my after dinner, after lunch or my Monday night football cigars. And if my grandson decides at the age of eighteen he wishes to try his first cigar, I'll be proud not only to buy it for him but to smoke one right along with him. So Sara go out get a life, find something you enjoy doing and do it and have fun. Then get your nose out of cigar smokers business thank you.

Good answer! I will never be able to understand why there are some people that cannot see the full picture. Its quite save to say that sugar and carbs are the killer Nr 1 as its causing insulin resistance over time causing diabetes, cancer, autoimmune diseases etc. It seems totally fine for those kind of people to have carb loaded meals and drinks in fast food restaurants and fail to understand that its much more dangerous to their healths than smoking cigars. Same thing for GMO foods, exhaust fumes, plastic and its effects on the hormone system, polluted drinking water etc.... We have so many problems in our environment that the health risks of smoking cigars are irrelevant, especially if they are consumed in moderation. (max 3-4 cigars a week) ) On the other hand, cigars can be very relaxing , lowering stress that is positive for health and eventually compensating negative health effects from the smoke. I honestly believe in days like this with this covid scam still going on, cigars can help to stay balanced and mentally healthy!

Starting at 5:50 I began to slump into a fetal position under my desk and make soft mewling noises. I nearly knocked the bacon from my pizza into my spiked mocha macchiato, but I did manage to keep my Woody cigar dry. Thanks, Sarah and Tim. [She has a point - taken.]

“Sarah” thank for your concern for our health. I ask you to please share with “us” something that you do that is “bad” for you health, physical and spiritual, which you need help with so people can pray for you. As I hope you are praying for “us”. God bless!

Could you please share the FDA study on premium cigars you mention? I’m a scientist and a cigar aficionado and I would love to have a look at it, and if it’s legit, share it with a couple of “Sarahs” I have in my life

I"m sitting here enjoying an Ave Maria and a nice pour of (gasp!) Rye. I'll say one other thing, Sarah. I spent 30 years in the Army. Compared to what I did for a living those 30 years, cigars and whiskey pose NO threat to me. Never forget, your freedom to whinge is provided by people who accept risks you frankly cannot dream of. Time to grow up and leave us alone.

Perfect reply to this “Karen”… Sugar is the new heroin. And everybody is addicted and it is the No. 1 killer of Americans. In fact, processed foods (including that “Beyond Meat” crap which is even more processed than a hot dog), sugar, excessive consumption of dairy, etc is far worse than the occasional cigar. The analysis also ignores the significant health benefit of cigars. Which is the leisure and relaxation aspect of it. Taking 2hrs out of a day to do something relaxing adds by some studies 5yrs to your life expectancy. As Steve Harvey said best… Cigars are yoga. Simple.

I think people like this that try to "educate" us are ironically very ignorant people. They see our hobby as some moral evil we need to be saved from and associate cigars as being cigarettes on steroids.
I know this is the case because they always mention smell. And it's a dead giveaway to me that the person is ignorant when they do. Cigars have a rustic, but pleasant aroma to them. I smell like cigars basically 24/7 and no one even knows I smoke them (except other cigar smokers) unless I mention it because it doesn't smell like what they thought it would, and btw my wife loves the smell even though she doesn't smoke, and I've heard similar things from other men who smoke cigars and their wives.
We're also not addicted to it like people are with cigarettes. I smoke regularly, but I have gone several months without smoking before without any issues just because money was tight, and I often will go several days or longer between smokes trying to get my cigars rested if I don't have some ready. It's not a need, it's not an addiction, I'm not even sure I can really even call it a habit for me. I do it purely because I just want to and I enjoy it, and they want to take that away because they don't understand it.

Can you share that FDA link? I’d love to show my wife who has “sort of” accepted my cigar habit but also has no issue giving me the “cigars are very unhealthy” speech. Lol

My take: Penn Jillette ... great magician and pronounced atheist ... but who also respects those who proselytize:
“How much do you have to hate somebody to not proselytize?” Jillette asked. “How much do you have to hate somebody to believe that everlasting life is possible and not tell them that? If I believed beyond a shadow of a doubt that a truck was coming at you and you didn’t believe it, and that truck was bearing down on you, there’s a certain point where I tackle you. And this is more important than that.”
So, 'Bless her heart.' ... but to be abusive the rights of those (harassing them) who choose to think differently or just choose to ignore her is exactly that ... abusive and harassing, no longer proselytizing.

I doubt that anyone who smokes would be unaware of the health risks. That suggests to me that the objective is less altruistic and more moralising. I do agree that it's probably better to send snacks and phone credits to people serving overseas.

I think is important to point out that when she wishes all lounges get closed she is wishing for people to lose their livelihood just because she disagrees with their choices. That does not come from a place of "compassion for the wellbeing of others" in my opinion.
