I visited the Victoria and Albert Museum in London where you can request to see archived Bresson prints. They sign them out to you, to be viewed at a table in the same room. I looked at several boxes of prints, not the ones Bresson is known for. Basically, if you were shooting Tri-X in the 60's and 70's with any film camera you would match the print "quality". Bresson's images are about the moment, and his composition. Leica M-3, Nikon F, Minolta SRT-101, even a Petri rangefinder would do the same job. Timing, composition defines street photography.

Thank you B&H and Hugh (and of course Claudia!) for sharing! I won't be able to make it up to the city this fall but I so appreciate Hugh taking the time to explain his choices in what & how he caries when venturing to the city. Hugh is a mensch among men, and for all those unfamiliar with him, Claudia and 3BMEP, they are an incredible resource for all of us photographers and videographers. I hope one day to have the time to partake in a Streets of NY photo workshop with them and enjoy it all firsthand! Cheers!

Always love Hugh's videos on 3BM&AE. Nice to get him talking about his gear (and he did manage to avoid getting into depth on the whole APS-C vs Full Frame stuff). I do other things other than street and bags wise I have a couple of messengers and a few backpacks focused on different gear choices (including hiking). I also have that Wandrd Prvke 31 which works great for travel (and situations where you are going places and want to take your big 3 zooms... e.g. a national park). My tip though is to remove one set of the velcro so the roll top is less annoying (the set that keep it shut at the most pack is fine enough even when rolled).

    3. Canon Canonet QL17 G-III 35mm film rangefinder with 40mm f/1.4 lens.
    4. Mamiya-Sekor C220 film TLR with 80mm f/2.8 normal lens.
    5. Leica M6 film rangefinder with 35m f/1.4 lens.
    6. Leica M10 digital rangefinder with 35m f/1.4 lens.

That sigma 24/f3.5 is so unknown by Sony apsc body owners. This is the best lens mounted on an a**** series for street photography. With one major caveat you do have fantastic image quality, aperture ring (clickable!) small form factor and best of all, because precisely of it’s major con (3.5 max aperture) this glass will force you to work with your backgrounds which there is nothing better to help you grow as a photographer.
    Great video!

It never ceases to amaze me how since I was knee high to a grasshopper people have gone on and on about how Leica M cameras are so small and discrete. To my eyes, certainly, the Nikon and Canon (and other manufacturers') manual film cameras always looked smaller - and they actually were, and much lighter, too. I've got an M6 and an FM2 sitting on a shelf right in front of me at this very moment, and without question the M6 is considerable larger than the FM2. To be fair, though, the shutter noise on the M6 is less obtrusive than that of the FM2. But purely in visual terms, the FM2 is definitely stealthier. Of course, comparing the digital Ms to the digital Nikons or Canons, etc. (full frame), the same no longer holds true. But my point being that people were saying this about Leica film M cameras for many decades prior to digital cameras hitting the consumer market. I could never figure out what they were going on about. Are they all blind, I'd ask my self.

have an A7III and Voigtlander 40mm Nokton f1.2. Really great for street, even if the 40mm is a little heavy. Worth it for the fantastic character of that lens. Wish I had the money to add an A7C as a second camera though and maybe a 50mm lens (like Voigtlander or Zeiss Loxia) too. I'm curious to know if the lack of buttons and front dial on the A7C would be such a big deal for my usage and if the compactness of that design could more than make up for it.

so many people belittle the kit lens for APS-C DSLR's , yet when it comes to street photography , IMHO , it's a star performer .
When one is too shy to ask a "street person" to pose , and grab shots are all one is up to , then even an 18- 55 lens offers versatility that a prime lens can't .One simply sets the lens aperture to the sweet spot , shoots Aperture Priority , and keeps an eye on the ASA (and the background ) , and very acceptable results can be had - but I doubt whether pros would agree , because many aren't working to such a tight budget that affords them limited/humble gear , my 5 agorot's worth

    • @oneeyedphotographer

I generally use the term "urban photography" to cover what I do which mostly covers inanimate subjects such as buildings, lost clothing, whatever catches my eye. It's mostly documentary, but doesn't have to be, at least until I publish something.

@@oneeyedphotographer - no snobbery intended , but what is your go to lens for urban/street photography ? - I'll be honest that because my Nikon 18-140 kit lens ( on my Nikon D 7200) is so versatile , the lens rarely leaves one of my camera bodies ( the other , a Sigma 10-20 , ultra-wide zoom , stays in the bag just in case I see something architecturally special)

    • @oneeyedphotographer
      @oneeyedphotographer Год назад

@@dovidell I don't have a go-to lens. Mostly, I grab a camera, a prime lens, a few batteries and I'm off. I have used 50mm on fullframe Canon and on APS-C Canon, 18-135 on a Fujifilm X-T10, 7.5mm fisheye on micro four thirds, also on MFT all my primes 12 to 60mm (macro) and 7-14, 12-40, 40-150 and 12-100 on MFT.
It really doesn't matter. I prefer primes, and I shoot to the camera in my hands. If I'm using a 12mm prime, I don't go for distant wildlife, if I have a narrow lens, I don't shoot close subjects unless it's a macro lens on the camera.
Canon TS-E lenses get outings sometimes, I bought them for architecture. I have used an MFT 100-400 lens for architecture and landscapes. It gives a different view of the world, and I like difference.

I'm a fan of Hugh and excited about this series. But...expected a more objective video on Street Photography gear. Yes, the title is Brownstone's Street Photography Gear to be fair. He clearly prefers Leicas, which is above most folks' budgets(mine included). But being a B&H Video with all the gear they carry, was anticipating a broader look at cameras and lenses that would be suitable. May have been helpful to see each camera in use and show pros and cons of each set-up. I think most shooters would think the Leica SL system too large for conspicuous shooters. Hugh appears to be comfortable approaching people on the street. So size is less of an issue for that type of shooting. But this video felt lazy in production, the background music never changed, the lighting was average at best, and the gear was presented mixed up on a living room table. The first video of this series was enjoyable, hoping the rest of the series is more like that one.

I have a Lumix S1R, it's heavier than the EOS 5Ds I used to own.

This is an entertaining series for people who likes this guy making an impression of that dude from Jurassic Park. It's really far from a masterclass.

No mention of Sony Rx1rii? Tiny; looks amateurish. Amazing fixed 35/2.0 Zeiss lens; articulating screen; unobtrusive. Capable of amazing images in the smallest of packages. Yes, it's a bit out of date, but still fantastic.

24-70 is blasphemy for street? Tell that to Steve McCurry and Martin Parr. 😅
I prefer size over super sharpness. That 50f2 Cron is my choice for 50mm. Hugh should try the 28f2 Voigtlander Ultron II.
Gear. Put a lens pen or a micro fiber cloth in your pocket. For Leica M you need to keep the windows clean. And an extra battery in your pocket too. That’s all you need.
1 camera. 1 lens. An extra battery and a cleaning cloth.

Must be nice to be rich. Just keep telling yourself, it’s not the gear it’s the photographer that creates the image.

Master Class on Street Photography; lesson one: gear. LOL.
Well... B&H is in the business of SELLING cameras, not teaching photography.
Guys, it could have been LESS OBVIOUS. At least pretend to put up a smoke screen...

Yes, we felt it was important to share the gear Hugh uses in his street photography first, but we do have several upcoming episodes that go more into technique. Thanks for tuning in!

Give him a minute now. He’s actually pretty good in the street. I’m sure he could get some great pictures with my Lumix lx100 taken out of my $25 Tully bag. I’m looking forward to rest of this series.
