  • This is the third of a series of bluegill Flies I have had recent success with myself. It is a personal design I created, and was surprised by the response it got from panfish.
This fly is a little on the complex side to tie, but once you get the hang of it they go pretty smooth.

I don't have plans to learn how to tie flies at this late stage of my life, but I enjoy watching your artistry. The camera angles were really great! I thought you pretty much nailed the lighting too! The colors of the Magic Bug were gorgeous! I love the fact that the dry hackles act as a guard against bluegills which were too small! Awesome craftsmanship! Thanks for sharing this!

Thank you. I thought I did better with the lighting on this one myself. And as a word of "wisdom". You are a wise man. You don't just tie flies, they tie you! lol I had said, when I started fly fishing, "I'm not going to get into all that!" But before I knew it, I was possessed by fly tying! lol (I happen to take everything to the extreme) But really, it is a real sense of accomplishment to tie a fly or streamer and catch fish with it. Besides that, I spent $5.00 on three flies at cabela's, and lost one on the first cast??? really??? I became enraptured by fly fishing, and fly tying just became a necessity. Then I became enraptured by the artistic creativity some of these guys have in fly tying, and I gave it a shot. But thank you for the encouraging comments. That inspires.

Very nice tie. I just wondered, have you tried this on trout? I bet it would catch. I like your design. I have a beaver pelt and other scraps from a furrier. They sell it for 12.00 a pound. I got two pounds and have enough fur for the rest of my life. I dyed some of the white fur all the colors I needed and use it for all different types of fur as long as it is long enough. All the best and thanks for sharing. Sean

It is hare's ice dub in olive. I think it's fine. This pattern has been hit by many species.

I liked the preview shot of the fly, but 3:30 in, and you still haven't started the thread. From the looks of the fly, it shouldn't take much more than that to the the whole thing. It's not an attention span thing. I'm here to see flies tied, and maybe pick up a technique or 2. I keep the sound off because so many use crappy background/foreground music. I won't sit and watch a lot of handwaving in the background. Thanks for trying, tho.

Clearly, Kirk, the internet isn’t ready for your brand of awesome. I’ll bet you’re one of those types that critiques porn too. Perhaps you should just stick to farting in the bathtub and biting the bubbles.
