In 1992, when I made my way to Beijing for the first time, I looked in vain for any punk scene, but I guess I was just too early; a year later and I might have met someone who could have told me about "The Fly". Thanks for telling us about this early Chinese punk band. it seems to me that there was a significant movement in Chinese art that was informed by a similar worldview at that time. It is almost as if something happened in the late 1980s that caused disillusionment and nihilism.
Its really very cool that you have spent some in Beijing. The period you mention is a little before my time. While I mainly focus on music, I do think the intervening years have seen a wealth of fantastic creativity. I genuinely feel that creativity donesn't suffer chilling effects well. I think instead, it inspires more creativity.
@@StellasEncounter Dear Stella, thanks for your reply. Yes, I think China is again flourishing in arts and music. Not so sure about film, but maybe in that realm as well? My impression as a person who has been interested in China (especially its cultural products and social changes) since the late 1970s when as a child my grandparents took me to see a Beijing Opera performance in one of the very first cultural exchanges as relations between China and the USA warmed, is that Chinese culture became creative in the 1980s, and has now again become creative in the past 15 years or so. I think I have to look hard to find anything significant or interesting or deep from the 1950s-1970s, and again in the 1990s and early 2000s the landscape was fairly barren (with some pleasant and surprising oases of creative expression). It seems many societies have "golden ages" of cultural production and then decades where it's hard to find the good stuff. I'm grateful to you for your sharing about what is going on in the music scene in China, as it's not easy to find this information for those of us outside China.
Another nicely put together presentation. I admit I know very little about rock from China, so I’m looking forward to learning. Wang Wen seems pretty cool. Thank you.
Thank You Stella. I have always been interested in rock music from around the world- especially smaller countries (being from a small country like New Zealand encourages that.) and China has always been a "black Hole " for me. Not that Chana ever was a small country but unknown and so hard to find information on - at least for a english speaker. I know far more more about music from smaller counties such as Cambodia Singapore Malaysia and Indonesia than I ever did about China. What interested me was how late rock music began to be accepted if you date it to Cui Jian. Even Hong Kong had a thriving (but small ) rock industry back in the 1960s so this is all a surprise to me. I look forward to hearing more about Asian music.
Hi Stella - thanks for the introductions to the new bands; I only knew Hang On A Box before your videos. Wang Wen seem very interesting. keep on Rockin'.
My wife was from China, she loved Cui Jian and then I really began to like him as well. Loved all 3 of the videos (A Brief History of Chinese Rock Music)
All of these artists are really cool! Cui Jian's music actually reminded me a lot of my favourite art rock band from Hungary (I mean it's art rock both)
This seems interesting, i tried to search it on Spotify and what i found was weird Pd. Your channel remind me my favorite music history RUclipsr, music radar clan
Hit me up on my discord. I have links blocked here in the comments sections for a number of reasons. I"ll be happy to point you in some cool directions. I would have to disagree with the statement that life and music are separate things, this is not true, in my experience. Love your content! Awesome to hear about bands from China that i had no idea existed
Thanks, Stella! This was a good introduction to a topic I wondered about. When I was young in the '70's, I recall hearing a radio news headline poking fun at the government-run Chinese music listings. The "number one song in China" was translated as "Oh, what a joy to carry manure to the fields!"
Thanks for posting this again Stellar. I heard these recommendations when you last posted For English people looking to find The Fly albums, you have much better success by adding 'the band' to the end in Chinese; like this 苍蝇乐队
Do you think an artist like Wang Wen gravitates to post rock, like" Good Speed You Black Emperor", in order to avoid Chinese censors , as it lacks lyrics? And, how do you deal with that yourself, and are they monitoring this right now ? Is that a dumb American question ?
Haha no, I think they just prefer instrumental music themselves...There are also many chinese bands who even have controversial lyrics. Haha no worries, good question! I have to use a VPN to youtube, as for monitor, I don't know...cybersecurity not something I know a great deal about.

Really enjoyed this! I've lived in China for 11 years. Actually met Cui Jian in a Harbin Bar. He travelled here to watch a young Beijing band.
Thank you for your kind words :) Wow, that's super cool you encountered him at a bar! Did you talk to him?
@@StellasEncounter I said hi and shook his hand. I was too starstruck to say anything. 🤣 My friend still has photos on his bar wall though
@@markist76 Hahaha alright! I'd be starstruck too!
Great Video, really enjoyed it! :D
Am glad!
Oh yeah I think I found the video I've been looking for since some years!
Good to know!
Chinese rock is very interesting. As well as rock in all countries of the world. 😊😊😊

I also disagree with the statement personally haha. Thanks for the support! Appreciated.
Great doc

Exactly what I was looking not some cpop advertisement👏

You really are 😎 cool, Stella!

Ahahaha, that's interesting, thanks for sharing this. I can't really think of what song that is now, though!
What about a Noise Rock video? 🤔 Great Chanel ☺️🤘
Great suggestion! And thank you :)
@@StellasEncounter Thanks for answer, have a nice day 😊🤘
That Ska music. Aweosme bass player.
I enjoyed Wang Wen. Definitely will continue the series.
I had only just started this channel when they were made.
I hope you enjoy!

Thank you for your helpful tip! Yes, 苍蝇乐队 is much better! :D
Surprised to see no mention of bands like Black Panther or Dou Wei. Tang Dynasty too but I guess they're more metal than rock.
No mention of Hong Kong rock bands?
this series is about mainland china for the most part, haha
Brll❤
