The Very Latinx History of Punk

  • Punk is more than music: It’s a way of life; it’s a politic; it says something about the world we’ve lived in and the world we want to create. It’s also served as a haven for the misfits, the disillusioned and the marginalized. But the narratives that exist about punk, outside those in the know, treat it as though it was just about angst. Punk is treated as though it’s simply the byproduct of a particular kind of punk: the angry white boy. But the history of punk is a history that intersects across communities building on similar sounds and politics. In the final episode of Pop Americana’s first season, Sana Saeed explores the Latinx punks - from Lima to Los Angeles - and their role in making punk, well, punk.

Hey everyone! Whew! This is the last episode of Pop Americana’s first season. We’ll be back soon with a lot more episodes. How are you liking it so far? We’re still experimenting with everything, so whatever you wanna tell us - tell us!
And we know the use of the word “Latinx” can be contentious, but we decided to use it for this video for purposes of not just inclusivity, but also to respect how many people in the video identify themselves.

    @schnoz2372 4 года назад +71

I’m sure I’m beating a dead horse, but it’s not “Latinx,” it’s Latino. Spanish, like many other European languages, features gendered suffixes. If I’m saying I’m with my friends, Maria and Felipe, I’d still refer to them as “mis amigos.” Using the term Latinos doesn’t mean you are ignoring women, it’s just the way you refer to Latinos. I don’t travel in any circles that use the term Latinx, because if you speak Spanish to any degree, you know that Latinos is the correct way to say it in Spanish. Also, it’s easier to say “Latinos” than to say “Latinx people” and anyway all of that categorization is vague and confusing. And English uses a lot of loan words from other languages. The word taco for example has no translation in English. And it uses a host of French words for which there are not really any alternatives. bourgeois.
    brunette.
    blond(e)
    adieu.
    au contraire.
    chauffeur.
    chic.
    critique.
So on top of the fact it’s sort of whitewashing, it’s also not really helpful in communicating information, and it isn’t any more or less difficult or foreign to say “Latino” than it is to say “chauffeur.” It would be like replacing that word with something like “drivist.” I don’t even really understand what the point of eliminating the Hispanic origin in a word that is mostly used by and refers to Hispanic people. I’m not upset or anything, I’m not saying this is a bad video for using Latinx in the script, I just think if i was gonna discuss a wide group of cultures’ impact on a certain genre of music, I would probably try to use the correct word instead of making one up, especially if it kind of removes the identity of that group of cultures from the word that refers to them.
Anyway, I just wanna note that the polish word for “German” translates roughly to “mute” because Germanic tribes did not speak the same language as Slavs of (modern day) Poland. Romans called them something different, it seems everyone had a different name for them. In Spanish, Germany is called Alemania, named for a large Germanic tribe called the aleman. It happened all the time and I’m sure the Germans aren’t any more upset about it than we are but it’s kind of weird and interesting to think about. I think I’m talking about it mostly because we have some say in what we’re called in a place like the United States, where a lot of us live and refer to ourselves as Latinos, whereas ancient Germans had probably no idea that people in Iberia were referring to the entire region as Aleman, or that some Slavs called them Mutes because they couldn’t understand each other, or that the Romans called them by the name they made up for the region that spoke that specific language.

Just light-skinned Californians and bands popularized in the US. Incredible. You can tell this was put together by a bunch of American-Born Latinos that can't hold a conversation in Spanish outside of L.A.
This was the type of SJW crap that people were uploading to youtube in the late 2010s to look woke and diverse and in the end just made fools of themselves. These videos are really badly reserached and not aging well.

They did(still do!) a great punk comic, with that proper fusion of hispanic and punk culture (I think the brothers actually went from being low riders to being punks). The comic is called Love and Rockets (And they named it that before the band!). It tackles a lot of stuff many writers today still can't do very well, and does them gracefully. Two of the most famous characters:Maggie and Hopey, bisexual punk women who date each other on and off.Just as an example, there are many more. Punk and all it's derivatives (hardcore, skacore, crust, thrashcore, Oi!, grindcore, etc,) is a universal kinda thing. One of the few genres of music where ya can go to a show and see the whole rainbow of humanity in the crowd and onstage. It's a beautiful thing and one of the biggest reasons it's always been a hotbed of resistance and alternative ways of living and building a future worth having.
I'll actually never forget when I was in my mid-teens and got shipped to Florida from NYC to stay with an aunt and cousin cause I got into some trouble (again) and me and my cousin went to a show and as soon as the first song started these 2 Latinx dudes grab me and we started dancing around the pit as a three-person wrecking ball dragging people in lol I ended up becoming good friends with em later and found out they were 1st generation Mexicans, twins, surprisingly straightedge and cool as hell. We'd burn a flag at almost every show and that was just to start the night 😂 We beat down Nazis anytime they showed up and even had a routine as to how we'd go about it. They ended up moving a few years later but we've stayed in touch. Miss those cats.

Oh my god, I can't wait for the next season and what comes out. This video is amazing. I went to a hardcore show last night and it was so inspiring. With latinx punk band Rotting Out, and trans representative SeeYouSpaceCowboy, highly advocate of all great things Stick to Your Guns, and the leaders of the new wave of hardcore music Knocked Loose, seeing this video makes me want to see more of what you guys could talk about with Pop Americana and hardcore music. Drill music and its connection to violence and inner city struggles, trap metal in its rise and roots in nu metal and hardcore, queer representation in heavy music all the way back to Rob Halfrod. I know you guys could cover some amazing stuff!!!!!!

@Connors Music dude, I LOVE punk. you have no idea. this is why I love it. I've been listening to punk for 15+ years. and that's why I'm so annoyed that I don't know about this.

@Connors Music Damn, your assumption really pissed me off for some reason. Damnn. The only concert Ive been to out of my own volition was a punk one: a Rise Against, Anti-Flag and AFI concert. It was an honor to finally see these guys in person!

@Connors Music where did i make everything about race??? the point is these guys now have exposure. we know MORE about punk now. and identity politics?? are your serious as punks, we feel like misfits in society. punk is all about identity politics. it doesn't devalue you for your race of course.

Keith Morris was the original front man Black Flag not Ron Reyes. Sorry, Black Flag is one my favorite punk bands.

Well Ron reyes was the frontman in the decline of western civilization so he became the first thought in people's heads when thinking on pre-rollins black flag

It also doesn't make mention of the New York Hardcore scene which is renown for strong hispanic voices or of the historic punk scenes in Santiago, Chile, Montevideo, Uruguay or Buenos Aires, Argentina.

the Zeros were not in ''The Decline...Of Western Civilization'' the bands that were in that movie were Alice Bag Band,Black Flag,Catholic Discipline,Circle Jerks,Fear and the Band X. ' trust me i know i own ''THE DECLINE...of western civilization'' on Cassette and I use to own it on VHS but maybe there's another Version with The Zeros on it and the movie came out in 1980

I really love this, I've never came across this type of information before, and being a Latinx punk, this is really inspiring. Will definitely take inspiration from this and influence my punk band.
