  • The Cold War was long and messy. The United States and the Soviet Union, while never directly confronting one another, fought for influence on many fronts. One of these fronts was culture - in particular using art, music, literature and philosophy as a means of furthering Soviet and American ideologies. In this episode, Sana Saeed explores two of the U.S. government’s most prominent cultural programs of the Cold War: the Congress for Cultural Freedom and the Jazz Ambassadors.

    I guess that explains the lack of Knowledge around George Orwell like he was a socialist and that he fought for Catalonia in the Spanish civil war prior to WW2.

    Abstract art and Jazz are not examples of how "free" capitalist society is as capitalist propaganda claims, but in the very opposite. They are outcries of pain under capitalism. They both create imaginary worlds of freedom in their art, where it doesn't exist in real life under capitalism. Both are artistic, emotional ways to escape from it for a few moments. Abstract art paints a different reality, an emotional world into which their creators escaped. And Jazz creates moments of emotional freedom for the musicians, where it doesn't exist in the capitalist, white supremacist system. Both art forms are yearning to overthrow the capitalist system. And realist art is not "controlled". Only in the sense of "taking back control over one's vision". It shows the reality of imperialism and capitalist exploitation, it wants to focus our minds and empower us. It wants us not to flee from reality, because that will only continue our suffering. In the opposite it wants us to look the exploitation and pain capitalism inflicts upon us in order for us to rise up against it and overthrow it.

      J Chalk and cheeses, Jazz is just one form of music with deep roots in Africa.
      Abstract Expressionism is house paint thrown at a canvas by those nominated as artists by an alphabet agency that also needed to turn visual art into a kind of currency, decouple it from aesthetic value or pleasure, to fuel a black economy of off books shenanigans. Neither you nor the narrator should have bundled them together.
      Disclaimer - don't listen to jazz but any idiot could see
      1) it takes long practice and talent,.
      2) is a "dialogue" between the musicians, a complex code.
      Abstract Expressionism is designed to cause demoralisation and pseuds overcompensation. It's indirect pre war European precursors, were just noodling around at sketchbook level, not providing collateral for black ops and cartel deals.ffs!

    Orwell fought with the poum and was an Anarchist not dem socialist and Anarchism was very common at the time the Spanish revolution was an anti Stalinist anarchist-communist revolution

    • @davidroberts7282
      @davidroberts7282 4 года назад

      Actually, anarchism and anarchist political parties had declined in most of Europe by the 1930s, except Spain because in many respects Spain was still seen as scarcely industrialized, devoutly conversative Catholic country that has lost most of its once-glorious, vast colonial Empire but had never really joined the rest of 20th century Europe in terms of modern culture, politics, international politics. And also anarchist parties used the unifying theme of nationalism as a rallying cry to unite different left-wing parties in Catalonia, who have always seen themselves as culturally, politically distinct from rest of Spain. POUM was sort of a more radical, 1930s version of what later came to be expressed in 1960s Quebec among French Canadians as Quebecois movement or the FLQ. One of the main primary reasons the Spanish Republicans lost the conflict against Franco's Nationalists was they lacked larger military forces, weren't as well-equipped, well-armed, or well-led, didn't have access to more sophisticated military tech and hardware and because the Popular Front, which was dominated by Soviet-styled Stalinists hated and despised other leading Spanish left-wing parties, they fought as much among themselves as they did Franco's Nationalists. Popular Front had hundreds of thousands of foreign "volunteers", including US "Abraham Lincoln brigade" but even many foreign adventurers, supporters, intellectuals who fought for POUM or Popular Front later said they had deep skepticism or doubts about whether far-left leadership or it's members fiery, murderous rhetoric made them any better morally or ethically than Franco or reactionary Catholic Church clergymen. Some of the more radical elements of the Popular Front didn't help their own causes by murdering, raping priests, nuns, sacrireligously desecrating centuries-old cathedrals, churches, cemeteries, or monuments, which along with Soviet support, made the Spanish Republican Popular Front look militant atheistic and anti-religious in tone which they kind of were anyway. Many Westerners were terrified the left-wing Spanish Republic would eventually do to Spain's religious heritage or it's traditions what Bolsheviks and Lenin, Trotsky, and later Stalin had done to many former Russian Orthodox churches, shrines, temples, and monuments. Orwell and Ernest Hemingway came away from their respective Spanish Civil War experiences with a more grimmer, nuanced, and more cynical view towards extreme elements and tendencies of far-left or how charismatic, influential leaders can become corrupted by power and distort seemingly idealistic, egalitarian goals into totalitarian regimes like Stalinist Russia, Moaist China, Pol Pot's Khmer Rouge's infamous Killing Fields Cambodian experiment. Orwell even said as apart of his opening prologue to Animal Farm that while he was a strong supporter of Labour Party, one of his primary objectives in writing Animal Farm was to expose socialism or communism in its most deranged, dehumanizing forms. Like Arthur Koesler Darkness at Noon or Gulag Archipelago.

If revolution had not occurred within these respective countries they would still be subjugated under colonial-puppet regimes that would be siphoning resources from their own people to hand over to their imperialist overlords in the name of “economic growth” and “democracy”.
