I moved from Vietnam to Canada about 2.5 years ago. Growing up, I met some of my Viet Kieu relatives occasionally. I don't see the negative connotation. Most Vietnamese people think Viet Kieu are rich, and for me, they were rich in a good sense. Now I know it's just about stretching the dollars.
Now living in Canada, I've met many Viet Kieu too, some have been here for more than 50 years. Some are very open and nice. Some still have lots of negative views about Vietnam. Their negativity sometimes weighed me down too.
Anyway, you already know that it's not about what people say, it's all about the inner work. It's a good idea to come back and explore Vietnam, and understand yourself more! Hope you figure out how to embrace both worlds (like what I'm trying to do!).

You used to live in Vietnam only a month or two for vacations, but now you are actually living there for an extended period of time, so it would take a little while for you to adapt to a new life/to integrate into the new culture over there.

I have heard many Vietnamese talking about this feeling of being in between cultures and some younger Viet Kieus also feel sad because their parents who left or had to escape Vietnam feel very nostalgic about their time of youth in Vietnam.
I have felt always out of place and as a Westerner I love Asia. I am based here for a few years now and when people ask me: why I am so far away from my country and whether I miss my country, culture, language and family? I always say no…
Why I love Asia? Because in Asia I will always and forever be considered an outsider.

For a lot of good food and cheap, go to the flea market places, and yeah I agree with some comments that you should go to other districts in Saigon as well… those without the number like Tân Bình, Tân Phú, Phú Nhuận, Gò Vấp… D3 is the coffee, bars, pubs hub with more local vibe than D1. D5,6,8 are the Chinese hub. But the Chinese here are very different because they’re somewhat Vietnamese-nized 😅. Hard to explain but they blend into the Vietnamese society for so long now and become an ethnicity of Vietnam. They’re not Chinese from mainland China. And D4 is somewhat like a bridge between tourists districts and local districts. Lots of good food in D4 too.

I feel the same desires as you to reconnect with my heritage. But right now I have so many attachements keeping me here in Montreal.
I still have a good job, a gf and other committements I'm not sure how I can drop and be free of...
Trying to evolve my tasks to be as remote as possible so that my GF and I could maybework remotely in VN. Maybe we'll meet for coffee there one day

Your parents' mindset is what held you down for so long. I think they already had a bad impression with VN and tried to deny their roots but you came back and found it. It is what make you special among others. Keep believing, exploring your root. Like me, I went to the US for 20 years but found a wife in VN, keep coming back to VN every 2 years. I am proud to be Vietnamese and most importantly, I do not throw away my root, home sweet home.

110k is $6 CAD. You can get the fan for a similar price or $10 CAD in Canada. The price point doesn't make sense. Why so expensive. It should be like $2 or something. A bowl of noodles in Canada is $15. A bow of noodle in vn is around $2. Also, some luxury apartments are $1500 USD unfurnished which is a regular rent condo in canada. What? t's crazy.

That's what i am starting to think, that if you move to another country without a strong supportive family or someone close with you that you will not become successful. People with support loves to see single independent people down. I really want to move to a country that will allow me to become successful as a person independently without having to have someone with me to do so. Im to grown to be carrying other people around with me just to make it as a person. It's deadly out here in the USA.

Personally, I think the street food inside the Ben Thanh Market is yummy, and the price is not that bad, though. It's a little pricier than outside, but it's relatively safer. As far as I know, no food poisoning case has been reported in the news. Have fun!

I live near a college in the US that has alot of international students. There are rich fob-y chinese students that drive around in Maserati's and wear rolexes and nice clothes. Some people are impressed but Americans just are kind of amused by it. The students will never integrate fully into US society bc they know they will leave in a few years after school is over. This is how Vietnamese view viet kieu.

Overseas Vietnamese have brought their their own family with their own kids back to Vietnam, returning to their roots. The fact that Danish born Mai Nguyen has brought her family with her Danish husband and 3 kids back to Vietnam, is just one example, and they have lived in Vietnam for over a year.

I have 4 young kids, so incredibly impractical, but i love the idea of raising them in Vietnam for a bit.

I moved to California many years ago. Graduated from the University and worked for 1 year in Phan Thiet as a marine scientist for the Decapterus and Anchoviella for the fishery industry., then Singapore the USA, my mom paid at least 12 oz of gold for the whole process to the Viet communist police. Then another degree in Computer engineering a few years later and worked in Silicon Valley for many decades. We (my wife and she had the same degree in the same field) are vegan and meditation as an hobby, so we did travel around the world for meditation, music festivals in Los Angeles -- Shrine auditorium, Chicago, Washington DC -- Dart Constitutional Hall, .... and international fashion shows in New York, Milan, London., .....We did travel to Asia many times Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Hong Kong, Taiwan, South Korea, Japan, But never Viet Nam (not my wife, she did travel to Cambodge and Viet Nam many times) , because I have no time for it, may be in the future I will consider Viet Nam in the list
