The saddest thing about Phone Guy for me is how he's overlooked and forgotten by the series as a whole. He's just another nameless victim of the animatronics and by extention Afton to get added to the pile. That's the true tragedy of Phone Guy.

I always found PhoneGuy's dedication to his job really admirable. Like, considering he's also the same guy who made the instructional recordings for the Springlock suits, he's been with the company for a long time. Knew of the horrific tragedies (and he sounds in his recording deeply disturbed by it) and yet continues working with Fazbear, becoming part of the problem in sweeping everything under the rug.... until his eventual death at the end of his fnaf1 recordings... sounding like he put everything together..... Who used the suit... what happened to the missing children, and that he was next... I just found his tragedy as a character really interesting when we had those three games. So I was pretty happy when he got a slot in custom night. RIP phone guy, your dedication to your work is admirable and your awkwardness palatable. Thanks for always leaving a message for us. Phone Guy is honestly such a great example of a tutorial/exposition character.
He's optional and can be muted if the player so chooses, he suits the setting of the game to a T without feeling shoehorned in or immersion-breaking, and is a genuinely endearing and down-to-earth guide through the game's nights... only to tragically die as you hear his last moments relayed to you over a voicemail.
Sure it's heavily implied he might just be a mouthpiece for the sleazy higher-ups, but I can't help but feel like he was just sandwiched in a difficult position (I think a lot of people stuck in toxic work environments can relate). I'm glad he's become a staple of this series

@pinkanimositygaming9830 They probably could've gotten their guards outsourced, if they weren't aware that the animatronics were possessed by dead children. Lore wise, Fazbear Entertainment is aware that something is wrong with the animatronics, and they are actively trying to cover them up, and having in-house security guards would be more effective in keeping the secret, since it's Fazbear Entertainment themselves that make the rules rather than a different company together, which might question Fazbear's unorthodox decisions.

Phone Guy is such a nice little oddity of a character in the grand scheme of what FNaF has become.
Most voiced characters now are much more directly significant to the story (like Tape Girl being integral to Glitchtrap's possession of Vanny) but Phone Guy has just entirely remained as some employee that just made a bad career choice.
To speculate on why he faded out of relevance, I'd wager it's mostly out of Scott himself being as shy as he is. SL was our first mainline introduction to proper voice actors and ever since then our tutorial character has remained HandUnit. I think Scott probably just wanted to shift focus toward a more experienced VA while he tucked himself behind the camera entirely, though maybe the movie might finally change this if he decides to finally reprise his role.
All in all Phone Guy is just a really interesting character for reasons very unique from every other FNaF character, and I enjoyed this video a lot! It's nice seeing him get a little time to shine.

I honestly think that Phone Guy was originally intended to just be a random employee, before there was any deep lore developed for the game. Its creator probably toyed with the idea, afterward, of making Phone Guy the serial killer responsible for the series' events, and gave him a higher position and a few bits of foreshadowing as a result. Likely concerned about the possibility of creating plot holes, though, he opted to return the character to his initial role as an employee-turned-victim.

A common theory I've heard recently is that Phone Guy was basically forced to become an unwitting accomplice of William in the early 90s after William learned of remnant. Presumably blackmailing Phone Guy with pinning a murder on him given all the stuff Phone Guy knows and the fact that William probably got Henry arrested for the first killing. Phone Guy was always loyal to the company and seemingly knew a bit more than most about everything, not a mastermind, but a complacent order follower. That would make it easy to frame him, and with Henry presumably in prison by the late 80s(He's the most likely candidate for the guy who served time given he vanishes from the story after the MCI until FNAF 6, probably serving time) William would need someone to help him.
Note that FNAF 1 is the only time when Security Guards dying on the regular was a common occurence. The OG location probably either didn't have a nightguard or the animatronics were still too fresh to attack(although it's hard to say for sure) and the FNAF 2 phonecalls imply the Dayshift Guard is the first person to ever really be attacked by animatronics, with them still trying to figure out the 'why' behind it when Jeremy starts his shift. Meanwhile FNAF 1 has a protocol for dead guard cleanup and a 90 day missing person policy, so they deal with that on the regular.
William was nasically forcing Phone Guy to assist in the giant honeypot trap that was the FNAF 1 location(bait to lure in and kill security guards for remnant experiments). Phone Guy clearly had concerns and tried to covertly help the guards, until eventually Phone Guy became a liability and William sent him to die.Probably not too long after this William got fed up with failed experiments and went back to study the originals, cue FNAF 3 minigames.

      1. The ONLY locations where Night Guards are being attacked by animatronics in the evening are FNAF 1 and 2, and in the second game it’s treated as a weird unknown phenomenon while in FNAF 1 it’s a regular occurrence to the point they have a cover story and procedure for it.
      2. The FNAF 1 location was a decrepit wreck being kept open by William for reasons speculated on, but it is known he knew about Remnant by this point.
Those two facts combined suggest that William was knowingly using the place as a trap to gather security guards for remnant experiments.
      And then consider…
      3. Phone Guy has always known a bit more than the public about everything. Always. But most blatantly and criminally in FNAF 1. He’s clearly trying to subtlety warn the guards, but is being forced by ‘corporate’ and ‘legal issues’ to handwave it. The company is a wreck at this point and Henry is either gone or in jail, so who else COULD be bossing him around aside from William? Phone Guy working for William is a logical conclusion. Phone Guy not really wanting to do it and trying to warn the guards is basically directly shown. The FNAF 1 location being a giant trap is logical based on its decrepit state, the procedure for dealing with dead guards, and what we know William was up to at the time.
The only part that’s really speculative is that blackmail was involved, and that’s just because it felt the most logical to me. William framed SOMEONE(probably Henry) for the MCI, and Phone Guy knows a lot of stuff the public doesn’t. Blackmail makes sense.

Phone guy has always been a mysterious character. But I like him a lot. Always have, likely always will. And I think Scott's performance of the Phone Guy is very underrated. The way he voices Phone Guy sounds like a real, genuine man who is leaving messages for pretty much everyone who works at Freddy's. He sounds like a real man with real concerns and the way he stutters and corrects himself and rambles, he sounds like a real guy. Now, Andy Field does a great job as hand unit or tutorial unit or whatever. But Phone Guy just sounds so much more real and I suppose that makes sense since Andy Field's voice is clearly meant to be some kind of glorified siri. But Scott just does such an amazing job at making a likeable character, despite so little being known about him without even giving him a proper name or face.
... so I'm not the only one who REALLY wants to see Scott Cawthon himself make a voice cameo as Phone Guy in the FNAF movie, right?

An often overlooked fact about the phone guy and about Fnaf 2 in general is that the calls that phone guy gives Jeremy aren’t calls to Jeremy at all. They’re pre recorded phone calls from phone guy to the night guard who worked there before Jeremy. The investigation that he mentions and and all of the events that he mentions on the calls happened many months before the events of the games and there’s a lot of evidence for this. First of all the phone guy mentions the in the first call that it’s a new summer job but the events of Fnaf 2 take place in November. Also, the last event that the phone guy mentions is that there’s a birthday party scheduled before they close and yet at the very beginning of the game you can already see birthday decorations up. One of the most obvious ones is the fact that the phone guy mentions that the place is closing down and will be reopening soon and the newspaper in the beginning of the game literally says grand reopening. It’s also heavily implied that the murders that happened during the events of the phone calls are what haunt the toy animatronics and yet the toy animatronics attack you on night one which is much before you get the phone call telling you about the murder. To put it simply, the phone calls in Fnaf 2 aren’t meant for the player at all. They’re meant for the previous night guard who worked there during the murder incident. This also could mean that Phone guy in actually Jeremy Fitzgerald too as the phone guy mentions that he will probably work the night shift once the place reopens and the guard who works the night shift once the place reopens is literally Jeremy.
Edit: The theory that the Fnaf 2 murders happened months before is just a theory and might be straight up wrong but idk. It could just be the case that Scott made it confusing, either intentionally or not, and the story of the games is much more straightforward but it’s always fun to try to dig deep.

Tsk, sorry but this is all too wrong, the phone guy in FNaF 2 is directly talking to you, and secondly it wasn’t an actual “summer” job with it taking place in the summer, minimum wage jobs are often referred to as “summer jobs”
Thirdly, it’s called a “grand reopening” because it’s the second Freddy Fazbear’s opening, and it was referred to as the “new and improved” along with the old location being mentioned which is the location that the Missing Children’s Incident happened.
Another thing to add, the toy animatronics walk around because of them having facial recognition, and they were made to find where the people are, the murders happened during the day shifts and it possibly happened during day 2 or 3 since rumors started going around, since William was the day shift guard, and due to the murders happening, the toy animatronics would be possessed and they would get aggressive.

    • @forbiddenmemez4786
      @forbiddenmemez4786 Год назад +11

The calls could not have happened many months before jeremy's tenure as a nightguard, as the newspaper clipping seen at the end, detailing the closing of the new location states that it was only open for a few short weeks. Secondly, in the night 6 phone call (at least), phone guy seems to be addressing the player directly and tells him that you (jeremy) are being moved to the dayshift, hence explaining why, in night 7, your paycheck is made out to a different person by the name of 'fritz smith'. This also implies that the murders at the fnaf 2 location, also happen during the day shift prior to the 6th night, which may imply that the toy animatronics were never actually posessed, as they were active before the murders were even committed

  • @nobodyinparticular5909
    @nobodyinparticular5909 Год назад +51

Here’s a theory that doesn’t add anything to the overall lore of the games but is a somewhat disturbing and interesting thing to think about. Specifically, Phone Guy could not have been the first (or only before Mike) security guard to work at the FNAF 1 location. First, let’s clarify the time period the FNAF 1 location is open for. The unused FNAF AR Faz-Facts state that there was a location that was in operation from 1988-1993. Since this location was in operation after FNAF 2, it’s safe to assume that the FNAF 1 location opened in 1988 and closed in 1993. Ironically, this would make the FNAF 1 location the longest living (and therefore most successful) Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza in Fazbear Entertainment’s history. This is contrary to the popular belief that FNAF 1’s location generated the least profit of the bunch.
I have a feeling that it wasn’t until the 1992-1993 period, towards the end of its tenure and when Mike worked his shifts, that Fazbear’s fell into such disrepair. After all, such an abhorrent, dingy restaurant like the one we see in FNAF 1 could NOT have survived for 5 years. That means that it could have enjoyed some small but steady success until something happened that finally killed the last shred of trust people had for Fazbear Entertainment and thus draining their funds. Proving that Phone Guy wasn’t the first guard there happens to be the first step into figuring out what shut the place down for good.
We know that on the 6th night of FNAF 2 he tells Jeremy that he intends to take the night shift himself once the place opens up again. However, this can’t happen. The key here is to look at how the company acts during both games. Specifically, we’re looking to see how Fazbear Entertainment attempts to protect itself legally in both games. In FNAF 2, Fazbear Entertainment does little to protect itself besides simply claiming they champion safety and deny wrongdoing, but in FNAF 1, the company has to deny responsibility for injury or dismemberment of the newspaper, the company requires Phone Guy to tell new recruits that any deaths will be covered up before the victim is reported as missing (within 3 months!). Essentially, they go the whole nine yards to prevent anything bad like a lawsuit or investigation from happening to them.
These new policies couldn’t have been implemented due to anything that happened at FNAF 2’s location. First, this can’t correlate to the children murdered at the FNAF 2 location because they weren’t really missing at all. The minigames show them out in the open, where there were most certainly witnesses, so filing a missing person’s report or cleaning the scene before anyone realizes doesn’t make sense. It couldn’t have been the Bite of 87 for the same reasons (a public event with everyone watching). It couldn’t have been FNAF 2’s guards because we know for a fact they all survive (and that 3 of them worked there). The first ever guard to work at the new location, according to Phone Guy, survived his week and was moved to dayshift. Then, Jeremy survives 6 nights and is moved to dayshift. Fritz is then the third and last guard before the restaurant’s closure and he finishes only 1 night before being fired.
Since nothing in FNAF 2 could warrant the implementation of these policies, something happened at the FNAF 1 location to force Fazbear Entertainment to implement these policies. Since anything during the day is automatically off the table, this policy was specifically made with regard to night guards, as there would be nobody present to witness their deaths, and the company would have plenty of time to clean the scene and report the guard as missing. Essentially, Fazbear Entertainment has had to deal with enough corpses in the FNAF 1 location that they implemented a new policy perfecting how they should get rid of the evidence. Which brings us back to where we started. Phone Guy couldn’t have been the first because he’s telling us about the new policy in the introductory greeting, so that means other guards had to have worked there before him, and they had to get murdered by the animatronics (enough of them to force the company to create that procedure).
To add more evidence, the phone calls of FNAF 1 are much more centered around how the new guard can actually get through the week. For example, Phone Guy, during the first night in FNAF 1, says, “let's just focus on getting you through your first week.” Contrast this to a similar line in FNAF 2, “I'm here to talk you through some of the things you can expect to see during your first week here.” Phone Guy during FNAF 2 is much more focused on orienting the guard to the new environment, while FNAF 1’s Phone Guy just wants to see the guard literally get through one week on the job. Considering Phone Guy’s Night 3 slip-up, where he says most people don’t make it to their 3rd night, it’s not out of the realm of possibility that the company may have been pressuring him to essentially extend the average lifespan of their security guards, which gives us that subtle night 1 line. In fact, that 3rd night slip-up already implies there were others before him. FNAF 1’s phone calls also consist solely of tips and tricks for surviving the night, while FNAF 2’s phone calls were more of a vessel for news about what was happening at the location and company.
Another unused FNAF AR Faz-Fact tells us that “In 1993, the most dangerous profession in the United States was actually night security guard.” That’s a nice way of saying that by 1993, enough security guards died at the FNAF 1 location to single-handedly make night watch security guards the most dangerous job in the US. Such a sizable body count for Fazbear Entertainment turns into a suspiciously long list of guards who mysteriously disappeared while working at the restaurant to the public. I don’t know about you, but I’d be a little bit suspicious about the location whose final rule of safety is to literally leave before dark, and coincidently, everyone who has stayed after hours happens to disappear. I assume this is the event that led to the drop in revenue that eventually led to the place looking like trash and its closure. It also most certainly began the rumors which eventually led to the night guard becoming part of the attraction at Fazbear’s Fright, and why Fazbear Entertainment had a bunch of Freddy Fazbear night guard simulator video games made to discredit the rumors.
Bonus Speculation 1: It’s possible that Phone Guy’s role in the company during the FNAF 1 location’s tenure was that of a temporary security guard. Whenever a new body was found backstage, they had Phone Guy fill in until a new permanent guard was found, which also probably served as further incentive to make the new guard last longer. Of course, Phone Guy was eventually killed during one of those fill-ins. However, that would leave Fazbear Entertainment with no temporary guard, so it’s possible that the pizzeria had NO night guard at all for a few nights until a new one was found. The night following his death, it’s possible that an animatronic causally waltzed into the office and recorded the night 5 phone call. It could also have been creepy paranormal stuff and there was never actually a night 5 phone call.
Bonus Speculation 2: Why did the newspaper at the beginning of FNAF 1 mention dismemberment? It’s possible that to suit up an endoskeleton, it needs to be dismantled (“dismantled” as in the endoskeletons can be taken apart and put back together easily) and each individual piece must be suited up before reassembling the entire animatronic, so when the animatronics attempt to stuff a human into a suit, it’s possible that they dismember the victim to place each individual body part into the empty suit before reassembling everything.

Unrelated but something else I wanna add is that the day guard that left his position in fnaf 2 is probably Willy. In the minigames he’s shown to have a badge so he must’ve worked there, or somehow gotten his hands on one. What I think happened is that he showed up for a position once the restaurant opened, killed some kiddies, starting the rumors that PG talks about and then just booked it when he noticed that the older bots were starting to move around. The bodies were most likely hid by Fazbear Entertainment themselves to keep the business afloat after the last time 5 kids died got the previous location to close.

I was happy when the Freddy's uniforms in "Pizzeria Simulator" were revealed to be purple. Looking back, I think the purple color was always meant to show that the animatronics knew an employee had killed the children, but their security programming didn't distinguish between them. That's why the bite victim is implied to be Jeremy. He was on the job, probably wearing a purple uniform, and he got too close to an animatronic that had in its programming that purple = killer. If the Phone Guy also had a purple uniform, that would explain his death too. You wear purple, you're a target.
That's also why there are different "purple guy" sprites. They're different employees. Consider that only one of the "purple guys" is ever actually shown killing a child, and it's the one who pulls up in the car outside. That slasher smile on all three employees was everyone just "putting on a happy face" to cover up a gruesome secret and keep business going, just like we hear Phone Guy do each night.
Later on Scott would use our own association with purple = killer to misdirect blame onto Michael. He was purple to everyone, and not because of his uniform but because he was basically a zombie. And if "Midnight Motorist" is about William after all, he's shown in orange because he isn't in uniform and/or this isn't from the POV of an animatronic. The story if FNaF definitely got too complicated for me to enjoy over the years, but I think we can put the mystery of purple to rest.

That's why I like him. He somehow managed to survive at least 2 Restaurants (Fnaf 2 and Fnaf 3 Training Tapes) before dying in his 3rd (Fnaf 1 location).
His laidback exterior and street smarts let him cheat death at least 2 times. That's a commendable feat. Technically, he almost made it to 5th day.
Phone Guy died doing what he believed in. Sticking up for the little guy, and tryna help him out anyway he could. Leaving behind messages containing hints and clues to survive. Even going as far as to switching shifts with the Guard in Fnaf 2 with his Day Shift. Perhaps he felt that him being more experienced with these, would make it easier for him to survive compared to us. He put his life on the line to spare ours. Not to mention, he did so after witnessing the Bite of '87.
Now that's a Real Standup guy.
I remember when people theorized that William Afton is Phone Guy. As fun and interesting it seemed back then, it wouldn't have worked in the long run. It would have taken out the last sliver of mystique the franchise has left.
People speculate Phone Guy to have been a higher up Fazbear Ent. Executive in his past. He either got demoted for some reason, or was just unfortunately the sacrificial lamb.
Nevertheless, i still love that there's mystique behind the character. Perhaps he'll play a Big role in the Fnaf Film.
Maybe they'll retcon him in the film, and make him William Afton/Henry Emily?

An aside right off the bat, EXCELLENT choice for an image for Phone Guy. If anyone here still hasn't played the DSaF trilogy, give it a shot. It's simultaneously one of the funniest most off the walls shitposts I've ever seen, and one of the most oddly sincere and in depth looks at the characters in the franchise I've ever seen. I played them with my girlfriend over a couple nights, and by the end of it we were both emotionally devastated in the best way, sore from laughing and tired from weeping.
[Edit: Wait, Oliver too! Dialtown is from the same developer, its their first original work, and it scratches all the same itches as Dayshift does. Just as off the walls bonkers, just as genuinely heart-tuggingly emotional, and just a quick to flip between the two modes. Plus it even has some fun little references to characters from DSaF in it if you know where to look!]

To me, what would make sense is if whoever was in charge before William Afton had some real shady dealings going on and was aware of the fact that Phone Guy was spilling info. The person who owned Feddy’s before hand must have eventually confronted Phone Guy about his assistance in helping the main player and threatened him. It could also be possible that the animatronics got involved.

Two different deaths that couldn't possibly line up. If anything I think it was Scott teasing people into that theory with the small hints. Not sure why the creator seems so sure of it..

While I don't think William Afton's introduction is unrelated to phone guy's quiet retirement as a character, I would argue that it has more to do with the introduction of HandUnit. Outside UCN, every game since Sister Location has had Andy Field taking over the tutorial position, so I think it was more to do with him that Phone Guy was given a pink slip, as he wasn't really needed anymore.
That said, I certainly think that phone guy's absence in recent games was at least partially because of William, as there's no reason PG *couldn't* have continued to make cameos post FNaF4. I think that Scott may have wanted to keep William and PG out of the same games where he could, to avoid Miketrap/Willtrap-esque confusion and arguments as to who was the true purple guy.
(Also this video made me realise that DSaF Phone Guy has been my headcanon appearance for actual phone guy for years. I hadn't realised how absurd that is till now, but I don't see it changing 😅)

So I have this weird theory/headcanon about FNaF 2 that ties into it being part of Michael's story while still having Jeremy Fitzgerald as a nightguard character. Similar to (and inspired by, which is why I'm putting it here) how Phone Guy supposedly had the job before the player in FNaF 1, Jeremy was the nightguard before Mike (he wasn't targeted by the animatronics as much, but they still did drop by the office some: that becomes a bit important later). We're seeing FNaF 2 through Mike's PoV, but Jeremy still was a nightguard at some point (hence us seeing his paycheck to establish him as a character). But Jeremy apparently did something to piss off Mangle during that week he had the job. Then he got moved to the dayshift. And oh boy, Mangle didn't like that (facial recognition didn't help it either).

“Hello? Heelllloo?” Phone guy has always been an interesting character to me. It’s characters like him that really add humanity to fnaf, no matter how out there the lore has gotten, there’s always normal joes out there trying to get on with their lives, like Phone Guy and Jeremy Fitzgerald. I really would have liked if in fnaf 4 we could hear some late night buisness related calls between Phone Guy and someone else, who probably later would be retconned to be William Afton during the night gameplay. It would make the house feel more alive, and since stuff people hear in the real world when they’re dreaming can affect the dream it makes sense that CC would be able to hear an ongoing phone call in his dreams. Either way it’s a shame the phone men were forgotten about, but at least we got what we did.

I feel like the Phone Guy does a very good job of both providing exposition, as well as enhancing some of the "horror" of the first game (particularly as a standalone work.) The way he seems like he's pressured to dance around the subject of your immediate danger, the disclaimer read during night 1, and the fact that him dying *on tape* doesn't seem to prompt any action on behalf of management paints a dire situation of your circumstance: if you die here, nobody will find the body, and any evidence of your fate will be scrubbed before it can affect the brand's reputation. It's a sense of isolation made all the more jarring by just how (presumably) crowded the place is during the day, mere hours after your shift ends. Nobody is there to help you, nothing will change, and your demise, much like that of the head guard, will be swept under the rug like everyone else's.
