Interesting posting. The difference between Arri and Blackmagic cannot be defined straight away, as the distraction of the images is too great. Seen as a whole, you can feel the difference. The mood of the Arri recordings is breathtaking. For a filmmaker starting his career or for low budget productions, the Blackmagic 6 K is a great asset. Or as a B camera for action, it can be used in the most expensive Hollywood films.
Nicely put! You’re right.. especially the color rendition of the Arri is amazing.
People don't understand the differences with ARRI are subtle. Only maybe when you get in really tricky lighting situations does the ARRI become more apparent.
However when you know the subtle differences it becomes hard to forget. That said most won't notice. But yes there is still a reason an Alexa costs what it does vs low end cameras. In terms of IQ the only thing the Pocket does better is resolution.
That being said content is King. If you have a good film you can shoot it on almost anything and with the right connections it will be successful.

for most productions pocket can be a cam looks like the cheap arri mini option that arri will never relese for that price, ill take black magic over amira any day i used them both and i think blackmagic can replace amira most of the time the pocket 6K pro with gen 5 is just amazing and years ago i could only dream about this camera
Nathan, you're so right. In terms of usability, the pocket is a dream cam! Though, the color in the Arri is unbeatable haha
@@SjoerdWess when i did test with the classic and i used HR in resolve i got better resoults with the pocket 6K also if you dont use red 709 lut (the pocket lut isnt that good) i think that the pocket give same level resoults as alexa but this is just me i love gen 5
Absolutely mate! I recently switched over to my own rec709 luts, CineS709. Perhaps you find them useful!

The ONLY reason I was able to tell is because of the better roll off and highlight information. And it’s not by much.
BM’s color science and quality is just unreal. It’s why I’m so hesitant to switch to the Sony FX3. I just love how BM looks more than Sony’s color science. It has a more “cinematic” look.

I shot on the Amira as A cam last week and the BMPCC4k as Crash Cam for an underwater shoot. And what we got out of that was insane! Especially when graded you can get those cameras really close.

You would get better DR and rolloff from the Pocket 6k and also the Arri if you used the wide gamut color space instead of Rec709
What do you mean exactly? Eventually I compress it down to REC709 for online video anyway. So that wouldn’t make a difference for accuracy reasons, right? The wide gamut is nice to grade in, but not so useful for video for youtube imo
@@SjoerdWess Yes, you are correct. If you must output to Rec709 it won't make a difference, and wide gamut isn't the best for uploading to RUclips. For delivering content to a different platform, I personally wouldn't use Rec709

The brownish, almost dead looking greens, are a great indicator for anything Blackmagic-related while ARRI has super vibrant greens on the other hand. And yes I was right each single time lol

Not really. Every scene is lit differently, so that should be done manually

With a good cinema lens the bmpcc 6k pro has even more value and I am sure you would not miss a camera like the amira, although it is a great camera it has an "somewhat old" image I like the modern image projected by a Sony venice better. for example. Thanks for taking the test, help the community a lot, go ahead good man!
Sony Venice is stunning! I 100% agree! I also think the Amira is somewhat old! The Alexa LF is one hell of a cam tho!
Ive spent a week looking for a reason to return my 6k pro but honestly cant find one. Mine is fine and weirdly my blue tint went away.
I would never return it :-) Love this cam so much already haha!
I love what my 6KPro can do, but the dynamic range and better rolling shutter on my Ursa Mini Pro G2 is still the first one I reach for.

I was able to tell correctly both times because the camera movement for all the shots from camera B was very, umm.. , how do I describe it, I mean, it was light weight feeling, like the movement was very flexible compared to Arri

That is the chromatic aberation of these vintage glass lenses :-)
Pocket 6k Pro cropped at 5.7k has less rolling shutter compare to full S35 sensor at 4k for Amira I might say Blackmagic takes that one. In normal lighting the Amira edges it but when it comes to low light Blackmagic takes it. Amira only record 10 bit Prores, Pocket 6k does Braw which is way more flexible in post, for me that is a bigger deal.

Another great video! Do you also have experience with generation 4 color science, I assume this is 5. I already liked Gen 4 but I am really curious about the new one. What do you think it is a big improvement?
Thanks Dennis! The Gen5 science gives you a bit more control over the dynamic range of the camera. Though, I find myself grading in 4 quite often still, haha

Without looking at the answer or comments I think CAM A is the black magic because it has a terrible softness which I just hate. Doesn’t look like 6k at all.
It was the Arri haha. The softness was due to the lenses mate!

I would say both are very nice cinema cameras and I had a hard time telling which shots were from which. The only glaring weaknesses, though, was the Zeiss 35mm lens. It is clearly way past its prime optically, no pun intended.
It was very soft indeed. Personally I kinda like that :-). But yep, we wouldve had other results if shot on a sigma!
It's NOT the color science out of camera. Most high budget films are going to heavily stylize the final grade which typically looks nothing like the natural colors the sensor captures during acquisition.
Stylization is what mostly seperates a short film from a high-budget feature, and most of those factors have NOTHING to do with a camera whatsoever.
I don't understand why so many RUclipsrs keep spreading this misnomer, other than they don't know what they don't know, or they're gearheads with GAS.
The Alexa is all its flavours are hired because they are dependable workhourses, built like a tank,with the preferable workflow features/connections required for larger crews.
A camera is just a box that records a raw acquisition image. In fact, IQ at the high-budget level is actually diminished return when you cosider most cameras can produce a high quality image.
Some people are getting way too precious about cameras. Filmmaking is a craft. A camera is just tool within that craft, not the craft itself.

Actually a really good giveaway of which camera was which was the amount of camera shake. The Amira is a much bigger camera than the Pocke6K Pro so the movements, even though handheld, were still more stabilized because of it's weight compared to the smaller and lighter 6K Pro.
You are the first one that was reading my mind while editing. I thought, damn, colorwise it’s close, but shake wise it doesn’t even compare haha! Good eye man!

I love these BM pocket cameras. I've got the pocket 4K and it's awesome. Yes Arri and Red cameras all are great and I love using them. But I really can't justify the cost on smaller projects and the BM cameras fill this gap perfectly and it's great to have a cinema camera at home with which you can play around and try stuff. I'm willing to bet that an end viewer on TV, PC, Phone or even a cinema can't spot the difference between a Pocket 4K and an Alexa anyway, not even with something as trivial as spotting a camera shake. :)
Absolutely. Especially if the scene is exposed properly. It's just the entire workflow with Arri is lovely. But yea, BMPCC is getting used more and more on big shoots here!
@@SjoerdWess I mean as far as I'm concerned as the director as long as it looks good in the end I don't care on what it's shot on. But I do find the Pocket cameras nice and every image we've gotten from them has been great. So I really don't see why someone wouldn't use them. Unless there's an "unlimited" budget and even then you could be tempted to use the money elsewhere. :)
Absolutely! I think we’ll see a shift in the coming years on what people use on set. Yesterday the pocket was used as a car mount cam along side an arri for a tvc.. getting there! Haha
Shots are not matched. B cam is too green. I think this is why it's so obvious that A is ARRI. It's not obvious at all at 4:04 when you've matched them perfectly. BMPCC also have problems with black color due to IR pollution so it's noticeable too. If you'll use a IR-cut filter I think no one can tell the difference. Waiting for second test ;-)
I agree that there is a slight problem in the black when it comes to IR pollution. I wanted to keep it all as clean as possible, no filtration and such, to see it's true raw power. Thanks for the comment Pavel!

Honestly, the 6k looks better. I’m so tired of hearing “fOr tHe pRiCe...”. No, the 6K is better here full-stop. Besides the frame-rates, which is nice on the Amira... I would RATHER film a feature on the 6k. Now Arri still makes my favorite camera... the Alexa 65... but people need to get past this mental block of “price”. Blackmagic isn’t “cheap”... they’re just honest and competitive.
Well, I agree with you, but on the post processing part, the Amira was as smooth as butter. Colors damn accurate, stunning rolloff.. I love the p6k pro, dont get me wrong, but for a feature, I wouldn’t want to play with this camera yet. Maybe after a couple firmwares
