    Blackmagic Design Pocket Cinema Camera 6K PRO FULL REVIEW
    Hey Guys, I have been using the Blackmagic Design Pocket 6k Pro camera for the last 21 days. And I am completely blown away by the images Blackmagic Design Pocket Cinema Camera 6k PRO produces. BMD have finally achieved the perfect portable cinema camera. Packing it all into one small digital cinema camera body. NDs, EVF, Flip screen and all under $2500 USD. CRAZY!!
    So heres my Black Magic Design Pocket 6K PRO - TOP FIVE FEATURES REVIEWED
    Introducing the Next Generation Handheld Digital Film Cameras!
    Dramatically improve the production value of your work by upgrading to digital film! Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera is better than a simple video camera because it has professional features allowing you to create the same "look" as Hollywood feature films. The combination of high dynamic range, great low light performance and Blackmagic RAW gives you feature film images with precise skin tones and gorgeous organic colors. You get advanced features such as 4K, 6K or 6K Pro models, large 5" LCD for easy focus, SD card and CFast media, external USB-C media disk recording, EF or MFT lens mounts and more! DaVinci Resolve Studio is also included for editing, color correction, audio post and VFX!
    Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 6K Pro
    The Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 6K Pro includes additional pro features such as built in 2, 4 and 6 stop ND filters, adjustable tilt HDR LCD with a bright 1500 nits that’s ideal for use in bright sunlight. It also includes two mini XLR audio inputs and a larger NP-F570 style battery.
    The Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 6K Pro features high quality, motorized IR ND filters that let you quickly reduce the amount of light entering the camera. Designed to match the colorimetry and color science of the camera, the 2, 4 and 6 stop filters provide you with additional latitude even under harsh lighting. The IR filters have been designed to filter both optical and IR wavelengths evenly, eliminating IR contamination of the images. Activation buttons are located on the rear of the camera body, placed within easy reach of your thumb from the multi function hand grip. User selectable filter settings can even be displayed as either an ND number, stop reduction or fraction on the LCD!
    The distance between the lightest and the darkest parts of an image is called dynamic range and is measured in stops. Pocket Cinema Cameras have an incredible 13 stops of dynamic range which means they preserve more detail in the lightest and darkest areas of an image than simple video cameras can. This allows you to set exposure for an indoor scene such as a cafe and still retain the details of bright outdoor light coming through a window. You also get more colors than the standard DCI-P3 colorspace used for feature films. Plus DaVinci Resolve Studio is included with the camera, so you get total creative freedom with full exposure adjustment and recovery controls when color grading!
    The large LCD touchscreen displays critical information on the heads up display, or HUD, as well as access to camera setup menus. The HUD lets you see and adjust settings such as the frame rate, iris, timecode, shutter angle, white balance, ISO, audio levels and more with a single tap. You can show or hide the HUD by simply swiping up or down. Adjust settings such as white balance simply by touching the WB indicator, or change the audio levels by touching the audio meters. Everything is interactive, so you can tap any item and instantly change settings without searching through confusing menus! You can also access settings such as the digital slate, to quickly add metadata to any shot.

      @@cinechimp How is your experience with not having stabilization in the camera? Your insight was far more informational and I feel like many are kind of blowing the lapse of in camera stabilization a little out of proportion. I never had an issue not having it but just curious.
      Also, do you use an RS 2? I have one and was wondering if there was any issues balancing it. Like you, I am so sick of cages especially when it comes to using gimbals etc.
      Looking forward to your response and no problem. Credit where credit is due.

      @@limitedhangoutlive Hey there. NO IBIS is no issue for me. I am used to shooting with Alexas and Reds. Neither have IBIS. Both systems use external stabilisation systems.
      The weight of the pocket PRO with the battery grip and the EVF I dont notice the lack of stabilisation. But I do notice a difference in the footage when adding a stabilised lens. But let me explain that a little. Shooting with the camera in the hands and the third point of contact with the EVF is enough, even for a novice to get stable footage.
      The super 35mm sensor, means that I have to use wider angle lenses. This is the nature of s35mm. But if your'e shooting 100mm plus+ like the shot of the bee in the video, you will need a stabilised lens or a gimbal. But that goes for my R5 full frame camera as well. However on the pocket PRO, a stabilised 100mm macro or any stabilised lens produces wonderful results. Just check the BMD lens compatibility list before you buy.
      The camera will work on a RS2 out of the box without any other accessories. Ill be ordering and RS2 and moving away from Zhiyun just for that..
      But it all goes to the way you want to shot a project right. IBIS, no IBIS. Gimbal no Gimbal. On the shoulder, sticks dolly.
      Every story requires a different cinematic approach.

      @@cinechimp Thank you for the detailed and informative response. I ordered my 6k pro because of your review as I was torn if I should move away from BM due to some other’s complaints. However, I have come to realize just how many channels and videos there are covering this where they simply don’t know what they’re talking about yet peddling “advice”. Outside of the QC issues which I completely understand people’s frustrations there.
      I have the RS 2. One of the best purchases I ever made and I’m not even a professional. I recommend getting the 3D focus system as it makes any lens auto focus. Great pairing with the BM and while the subject has to be in the middle of the frame, the speed in which it focuses is just outright insane.

When we saw the press release for the 6K Pro, we sold every other camera we had (2 Ursa's, 2 Sonys) and now shoot exclusively on 6K Pro's. The battery swap over to Sony's was a god send. Incredible review, u can tell me how put the percentage for batteries left? I’m mad looking for hahaha thanks!!!

    • @cinechimp
      @cinechimp  3 года назад +2

      Hi Marco great question. First tap on the battery icon. You should either see a voltage ie: 5.7v or a percentage.
      But your battery needs to supports percentage display. If it does the battery icon shows the remaining battery level as a percentage, and drains in 1% steps. At 20% charge remaining, the battery bar turns red. To toggle the percentage display on or off, tap on the battery icon.
      The battery included with your camera shows a battery icon that drains in 25% steps. At 20% charge remaining, the battery bar turns red.
      Blackmagic Pocket Camera Battery Pro Grip can power Pocket Cinema Camera 6K Pro from its two batteries as well as the camera’s internal battery. These battery meters show the states of all three batteries.
      Again even when using the grip you would need 3 batteries that support percentage display to see three percentage remaining runtimes. Otherwise you you can see volts or the standard 25% drop down to the red icon.
      Hope this clarifies the battery display icon for you.

    I think the audible sound of the ND’s are negligible, would you ever change ND’s whilst shooting? I mean if you had to apply ND that means your shot was over exposed before the ND was applied and why was one shooting whist the shot was over exposed? Sony has digital ND that can be smoothly applied whilst shooting in that case it makes since for application to be silent. Great video! Enjoying my 6k Pro!

    • @cinechimp
      @cinechimp  3 года назад +2

      For drama shoots, absolutely agree. But docos that are shot in very tight time frames with a more fly on the wall approach...these could be a problem. I have a sneaky suspicion my unit doesnt have enough graphite grease on the gears. My friends unit is much quieter. I recently did a daylight shot on a windy overcast day with the camera and I was swinging ND's like crazy. The camera is superb for the money. And my units noise is the my only gripe. But I can live with it.

It's not an issue, it is a real thing, thats why Sony has gone with a EVND that can pull ND for you. And that has been a huge part of their marketing campaign. Doco isn't like shooting drama or commercials, where you can constantly cut to make camera changes. You have to react to what unfolds before you. And the comment that you keep questing is in relation to that type of production. Have you ever shot a long form doco?
      You keep rolling.

    Great review. The only thing that scares me about this camera is all the things to think about if shooting at 6k 3:1. Will that one battery still hold up for an hour? Or should I buy another to switch it out? How long until I have to switch out a 1TB SSD? From what I was reading, 1 hour of shooting will eat up 1TB at 6k 3:1. Is that true?

    • @jeremym1288
      @jeremym1288 3 года назад +1

      These things scare me when I want to take it for max resolution and realize I can only shoot for 20-30 minutes until I have to stop and go home.

    • @cinechimp
      @cinechimp  3 года назад +1

      In the battery test in the video my single internal battery ran for 94 minutes. That really surprised me. Like all BMD design cameras, if you have a SSD/CFAST card big enough, the camera will just record until it runs out of card space or power.
      You should easily get an hour from this camera. Media wise you are correct, 6k at 3:1 constant bit rate will use 1tb in an hour. But if you change to constant quality and Q1 compression the camera will run for around 80-90 minutes depending on whats in the scene.

    Thanks for the review, but do you think one can do without the EVF. I plan on shooting indoors with the Pocket 6K Pro and saving the extra $500 could come in handy. Later down the line sure, but do you thing I can do without? Thanks.

      Hey there, Absolutely you could rock this puppy without an EVF and get fantastic results from the camera. If you are worried about the monitor outdoors, it is really usable. It surprised me. But if you are only shooting indoors with the Pocket 6k PRO, the LCD screen on the back of the camera will serve you well my friend.

    Nice review! I heard a lot of people had a blue tint LCD screen issue. Everything was ok with your camera ? And for the nd's, when you switch, if you update the WB it will be fine ? In your video, the WB goes from 5600k to 3700k so after that you adjust if you want more or less warm colors? Thank you very much !

    • @cinechimp
      @cinechimp  3 года назад

      Hey there. I think that the blue screen issue is a firmware fix as it a colour matrix thing. But my camera doesnt have the blue screen issue. My nds are also not blue tinted. I would say that the NDs is a quality control thing. In the video when I do the white balance, yes - I let the camera decide the white from the grey card. It was a super cloudy day... and because of that I had to keep setting the WB. Even when I forgot to set the white balance (just when shooting) my units IRNDS are very neutral. Maybe I got luck.

      Thanks for your quick response :) I'm glad you got a good camera! I canceled my order on B&H because of these issues. It's unusual to do my white balance with gray cardboard (instead of white) but I'll try! Otherwise the color shift is not too intense? Hopefully my camera will be like yours when I order it again. Thank you !!

    INteresting. One cinematographer says internal Nd's are pure crap. Another says they are great? I have the camera and only thing Im concerned with so far is the fan noise. Its pretty obvious is a sound controlled room. I also found that I still need my external monitor but luckily I have one.

    • @cinechimp

      Hey Skip, I would say its product quality control manufacturing issues. EI have seen the reports of battery grips not working, blue monitor, fans being loud, IRND colour shifts, cameras not switching on....etc my units fans aren't that bad, but the NDs are loud on changing. Otherwise my pocket 6kPRO is rock solid.

    Well you didn’t talk about any of the most important points; let’s start with picture quality… That’s THE most important thing of all… How about rolling shutter? How good is it in low light levels? Those are way more important than anything you’ve mentioned. You said you have a can on R 5… Is the picture quality better in the Canon or in the black magic? Battery life to me is completely insignificant if the picture quality isn’t blow away.

      Hi Allen, The R5 pocket 6kpro would have to be an entirely different video. These cameras are drastically different and are really used for different types of work. The reason I didnt talk about the image quality as it is unchanged from the pocket 6k. A camera that has been out for 2 years. There are many examples of great stuff shot with the BMD P6k online. I didnt want to go over what so many had done before.
