I ordered Velvet Falernum from a site in Denmark this summer, since you can't get it in Sweden. And now this drink! Wonderful! And it comes with a way to diy. Double win! Thanks so much Cara! Drink tried, recipe left to do.😋
As always great and fun video. Falernum is one of those things that in my personal Homebar-journey started out as "Uh, I have to buy this bottle just for this ONE drink?" and ended up as one of the things that need the most restocking. When you are into rum and discover the Bermuda Cocktail Triangle of Royal Bermuda Yacht Club, the Corn 'n' oil and a Ranglum, you can't live without a bottle of it at home :)
I don't normally drink rum. But a buddy brought me back a bottle from Louisiana. It's bayou Satsuma rum. Its la. Suger cain rum added to Satsuma juice. Its 7o proof . It makes a good mix with tropical and citrus type mixed drinks. If you get a chance look it up and try it if you can.
Great video, love that rum, love that you mention the options, the repeated lime was different, I think it will help people remember to dehydrate their lime slice, still looks great on the glass, the spirits and ingredients you use isn't the really cheap stuff, adds a little class, Bravo! Tonight it's rum on the rocks, I raise my glass to you Ms Cara, Cheers!
Nice! Possibly my favorite tiki drink. FWIW, I've never seen a fresh lime float - not at home, not in the bar, not on a youtube channel (not that I've gone looking).
The rind makes the like denser than most watery substances. If you try it on a denser drink maybe? You could try it in something with more structure, like whipped egg whites. A pisco sour perhaps?
Just made this with Flor de Caña 7 year, Pierre Ferrand, and Taylor’s. It’s perfect. My wife doesn’t like most of the cocktails I make from RUclips, but her reaction tonight was “this one’s actually good”.
This looks delicious !! Thanks so much for taking the time and care and sharing with us, Cara. Now, let me just finish my London Calling (from one of your previous videos !!) and then I can make one of these!
Great video, very informative, I actually have all of these ingredients now except for the glass gonna make it right now. Not sure whether to use a Grand Marnier or Cointreau for this recipe or even a cheaper "triple sec."
Update: I used Grand Marnier, John Taylor's Falernum, and an Appleton estate Rare cask 12 yr. as my dark rum, and of course fresh lime juice. Came out great! very spice forward with a full fruity vibe hitting you upfront as well. Was hard to distinguish the rum. I'd say a dangerous little cocktail for sipping it might be easy to have a few.
Can't say I've tried a daiquiri and if have would have been 40 yrs ago. The way you made this and your review on makes me want to try one however. Thank you! So the lime didn't float. Nice thin slice regardless! 🥂
I really love this cocktail. I've been making it with the 5 year Barbados expression from Plantation. I did go through the trouble of making an alcoholic falernum (mostly for the sake of doing it, it was no cheaper than a bottle of Velvet in the end) and that was fun. I've been idly trying to find a way to use it in an Old Fashioned variation, sort of Fancy Free-esque.
For sure, I mean just a rum old fashioned with it and maybe some Tiki bitters would be great I’m sure! I also reckon falernum and rye is a good combo with all that spice.
We have indeed. We have this for stocking your home bar (for cocktails at least 😉) - ruclips.net/video/PR_bmMzQszg/видео.html and this video gives a basic run down on tools of the trade - ruclips.net/video/WnrEKvyozpU/видео.html - hope those two do the trick!
With the upcoming winter season in Europe and N. America, I’ve noticed that warm/hot cocktails are taking off this season, likely due to winter outdoor dining now being a thing. Any fun recipes for those? I’ve been warming up some apple cider/juice, adding it to Kraken dark rum with some mulling spices.
We’re the opposite here! Haha. I like to make a spiced syrup of some sort (you could even use falernum!) and just use that to spike wine, cider etc or even whisky, water and lemon for super easy mulling/toddies 😊
as someone who loves rhum agricole and is always looking for a new excuse to use it, it's pretty drastically different from the el dorado 5 year. and considering this is a 3 ingredient cocktail, i'm wondering if it's even the same drink at that point.
This is an interesting question- my feeling is generally that if the base spirit remains the same then it is the same drink (an old fashioned made with glendronach would be a million miles away from one made with Ardbeg, but they’re still the same drink). But rum in particular throws a curve ball because it covers such a range of aged/unaged/spiced etc. I don’t have an answer for you but it’s something I do think about!
Plantation 3 stars will be great! Falernum is really what makes this drink unique, but if you have another flavoured syrup (cinnamon, orgeat etc) it could create another nice twist 😊
Good timing. I just made a batch of Falernum (“Falernum Number 10” recipe) but haven’t used any yet. This gives me a simple cocktail to try! What do you think about adding a dash or two of orange bitters?
Perfect timing! Orange bitters are definitely not necessary given all the yummy stuff going on in the falernum but would give a lovely little floral lift if you felt like going for it 😋 I think they’d work best if you had a fruitier rum base.
I’ll have to try this next summer if the Lord’s willing and the creek don’t rise 😅 (I’m 72). Until then I’ll stick with Bourbon with the possible venture into an Old Fashioned. Great presentation as expected.
I like your channel guys, very informative! I still have a question: some channels insist on putting the cheap ingredients first then the more expensive ones. I noticed you add the lime juice often in the middle. Is there a reason why?
I measure out the expensive ingredients first. Reason is that way you rinse the spirits from your jigger with the mixers . (What the chemist in me would call a quantitative transfer). I understand this is contrary to the conventional wisdom in that if you mess up, do so with the cheap reagents. I, too, like Austin Powers, like to live dangerously.
Hi, I've been trying to source that Australian gin you recommended in another video; not having much luck. Can you point me in the right direction? I live in England. Thanks 👍
@@johnratcliffe6438 ah yes! Archie Rose do a gin as well (and have actually just started releasing both a rye and a single malt which is exciting!). I’d imagine if they’re not available overseas yet they will be soon as they’re growing quite quickly 😊
It's Autumn on this side of the world, but it's hard to say no to a well made tiki drink. Do you think that Plantation 5 Year would be a good substitute for the El Dorado?
unaged rhum agricole is so tasty, but other than in something simple like a daiquiri or a ti punch i can’t find much use for it, that grass note cuts through everything. what do you like to use it in?
Yeah I do find it likes to be the star of the show so tend to stick to fairly simple drinks- it makes a really nice savoury Mojito/Collins style drink. Three Dots and a Dash is a good classic using it as well, blended with dark rum 😋
@@BehindtheBar i accidentally bought it for a mai tai thinking it was aged martinique. as much as i like the stuff, the aggressive grassy note ruined the drink & i now have to find creative ways to use it up. (not a bad thing overall)
Honestly not really, more the provenance and the fact cachaca is made from fermented cane juice. This is a good article on it: vinepair.com/articles/what-is-rum-rhum-agricole-cachaca/
Do you advise against using falernum liqueur when the syrup is hard to come by, either in this drink or in any other? Are there any brands you particularly recommend, or recommend against? Taylor Velvet Falernum is the only locally available to me. If it is a reasonable substitute, do the ratios change at all or should it be substituted one-to-one?
I tend to keep them fairly simple so other flavours don’t clash with the spice (for example here the falernum would be a bit much!). A spiced rum Daiquiri or Mojito always goes down well, or you can build a drink around the particular spices of whatever rum you have 😊
Nice, I’ve had a bottle of The Commissary Falernum for around 6 months that I haven’t used once yet I’ll be sure to try. Their orgeat is the best but I can’t find it from my normal spots, any ideas how to get it?
