It's a bit too late now with your current formicarium, but I suggest building chambers for your soldier ants especially that are perfect hexagon shapes of 19 tiles or even 38 tiles. To do this easily just expand your perfect hexagon 7 tile chambers along the edges. Having 19, 38, or even more tiles in a perfect hexagon shape will allow you to upgrade ALL the ants in that chamber to max level, provided you have a single speed tile at the chamber's entrance. I recomend upgrading your spitter ants, especially if they are mortar, to level 3. Mortar ants are by far the best against masses in the game, and they are essential for winning 2.2 on insane, free play mode with attack waves, and they help a ton on the formicarium challenges.
Upgrading your ants to the max truly is worth it, as black ants get rapid attack at level 3, rapid fire ants get poison shots (slowing enemies) at level 3, and mortars get the most powerful upgrade of all, splash damage. It is possible to easily beat the first formicarium challenge with 19 max black ants and 19 level 1 workers with special upgrades from the tech tree. It's also possible to beat the second formicarium challenge with the same 19 max black ants and 19 level 1 workers, with an added 19 max mortar ants. The other way to beat the challenge is by meeting the enemies with your own masses, but that would cost much more food, because your level 1 ants would die much faster than level 3 ants (and 19 level 3 mortars beat 57 level one mortars. This is a ton of information, I hope some of it helps.
Also a tip (not sure if you did this): Toggle your worker's attack and food gathering off. Their single role is to care for the brood and dig tunnels, and they're useless fighting. Even a max level worker is by far weaker than a level one soldier, even with tech tree upgrades. I recomend putting them all in the nest group. Also, try to put your pheromone markers at your queen the moment he puts tiger beetles in. It will take time for your ants to regroup. One thing, don't let the enemy spitters get too close to your queen, or else they will target her and you won't be able to kill them in time.
I toggled their attacking off at times, I left the food on just cause I was a little short so I was hoping they would carve up the tiger beetle carcasses. If I can get a bit more of a food store in place though I'll turn that off as well.
I learnt about the hexagon shapes a little late for the formicarium but I'm trying to use it where I can now.
Hoping to upgrade the ants next time as well, though I'm pretty sure I went with the rapid fire rather than mortars.

you know if you put more worker ants on nuse duty you can make them spawn faster i hope this helps you later
Thanks Teresa, I did do something like that later in the vid, not that it helped me win but I could definitely see a difference in having more workers to move eggs around.
If you turn the attack off for the ants they will stop fighting and head on down (sometimes)
watching him move them back half way like that hurt

Yea they're kind a of a last ditch cause I couldn't see my soldiers making it! Next time around I'll try and keep them out of it a bit. Thanks!
Your food storages are behind enemy lines, so they are dying on the way to the storage after foraging when you make the defend low strategy

Haha, you've had some reLly helpful tips in the comments, you've got some really good friends and fans. Also I found if weird when they said Wolf spiders as theyre usually the size of your palm and wouldnt bother with ants.. let alone even squeaze into the tunnels.. But they must be talking about the ones we have here that we get in our bath tubs because those are small but still not small enough for the tunnels. I may be derping but if these were wood ants it would be more logical.
I have the best commenters! I've always thought wolf spiders were pretty small, you must have some pretty big ones around you! Though I'm not sure they're small enough to invade ant nests, that might be a bit of artistic license going on.
Hmm well in the Midlands they're a good 10 cm which is way too big for a 0.5cm ant whole entrance :P I thought so :D
