Allmost all singers roll over the words. It is no crime. That is better than completely changing the words which many singers like Aruna Sairam and T.N. Krishna do. Fantastic concert by Unni Krishnan.
Almost all singers roll over the world. That is better than crime. That is better than changing like Aruna Sairam from young to old. And that would be beutaful.
Pannum Patham Ealum Pala Oasai Thamiz Avaiyum - Lyrics from Thirugnanasampanthar Thevaram. Thanks a million to you, Unnikirishnan Sir, for the courage you had to pick this heading, efforts in mastering the songs and beginning the concert with Thevarams, as per Thamiz tradition. I have seen some so called Tamil vocalist not singing a word in Thamiz. As a Shiva devotee, Thevarams are very easy for me to understand, but lyrics are open to wider interpretation. Othuvars will say it will be very difficult to sing surams for Thevarams! You have done that too. Finally ending with Murugan’s song to melt everyone’s heart - wish you had time for a Thirupugaz too. Excellent concert with appropriate choice of lyrics, a very traditional Thamiz Isai - Thanks again for your Isai Amutham!
He is a great musician. His music touches the soul. There is bhavam in it. Why should there be any criticism on his talk. His talk is natural & gentle. As an artist totally devoted to Tamil music who takes efforts to learn tho' he hails from Palghat, he deserves all appreciation. Let us wish all good luck to him.
Very nice video. Mayamalavagowla so beautifully sung. Bhairavi alapana is also superb. Muruga Muruga in Saveri was pleasing to hear too. The accompanists are very good also; Sri R K Sriramkumar's violin play so smooth. Good shruti shuddham. Very good concert, I think. Did you see the most wonderful Carnatic vocalist, Sri Ramakrishnan Murthy in the audience, nodding his head during Bhairavi alapana? I adore his singing because he sings from the heart, and not just from the throat. That is the way Carnatic music is supposed to be sung, from the heart, because the purpose of Carnatic music is not just to entertain, but to enlighten. These days very few vocalists seem to know that because they are always striving to entertain, seeking applause; so their singing does not enlighten listeners' minds. Unnikrishnan sings like most others when singing "eppo varuvaro..". He merges the end of the pallavi line with the end of the anupallavi line (which is "seppiya thillai). When we want to make sense of it we can't. He should learn it from the DKP school (now from Nithyasri). The actual line is "appar mudhal moovaraum aaLudai adigalum seppiya thillai cidamabara nathan......eppo varuvaro..."
Excellent Concert. Enjoyed it immensely, especially the Bhairavi!! Eppo Varuvaro is the all time favorite from the albums released before. Awesome!! As all the songs were in Thamizh, I was able to appreciate it a lot more. Thank You.
recently ther was a critic who was expressing surprise that over the years he hasn't learnt to sing with clarity in an article in THEHINDU so he should concentrate on this more
Sung very nicely. Music has no language. Some fanatic people will judge ones pronounciation and decide whether a singer is good or bad. These so called weak minded people spoil the music rather than enjoying it.
I dont understand the problem of a few here in the forum about musicians talking in English. its a universal language and most of them speak in English. Except Shri. Vijay Shiva, most of the Vidhwans speak a few sentences in English. This is no crime as long as you communicate with the audience.
Telugu and Kannada people cannot sing properly in Tamil and that is fine. Hats off to Unni Krishnan for singing in many languages. When did he say no one dare question him? Thevaaram here is wonderful.
Over the years I have heard Unnikrishnan in person and in electronic transmission, I too have the same complaint regarding his diction. His pronunciation leaves a lot to be desired. But I have to tip my hat for his courage to take up this theme of all Thamizh concert. If he improves his diction he will do well. But given his style I have my doubts.
JAYA TV please stop these theme concerts instead give more freedom concerts so the artists can make more concerts. And please tell the artists to stop these.
mr unnikrishnan has to intonate the words clearly his closed mouth singing is a bane to the listening experience if you observe his career he has sung a lot of tamizh keertanais than TELUGU so his theme justifies his approach in more than one ways as far his intonation of TELUGU,the less said the better for a person who knows telugu, his intonation and pronounciation is jarring might be a reason for his singing mostly tamil and other languages in his many concerts is a justification of his infidelity to the language
How many languages you know with proper intonation sir? I dont understand what do you mean by closed mouth singing??!!! how can one sing with closed mouth? I am afraid that you might have a zero knowledge on music.. so its not worth to discuss sir..
Unnikrshnan please send a comment to steady health that we don't have belly fat anymore but we do have other health problems that are more important to solve first.
Somewhat disappointing performance - a) The theme says "தமிழுக்கும் அமுதென்று பேர்". The singer proceeds to introduce the theme in English, but then is unable to hold on to one language - resulting in a scrambled introduction. b) Sri Unnikrishnan does not enunciate the words well - some of Mulugu Neelotpal's comments below are valid. Especially when one talks about literary Tamil, enunciation is very important. For instance, it was very difficult to clearly hear the words of the song in Simhendra Madhyamam. What's the point of singing like that? Sri Unnikrishnan is a talented singer but seems lackadaisical in his preparation. Hope he will take some of this feedback and seek to improve his presentations in the future.
exactly thank you for concurring with me on this! the thing is might be he is too consumed with his rockstar status on film judging shows in tamil, malayalam he thinks what he sings will be taken as it is and no one dare question as he is a vidwan for his kind information, even semmangudi the pitamaha wasn't spared at a time by SUBBUDU when he said that the great service that semmangudi will do to the Carnatic world of music is to stop singing and sit at home, which prodded semmangudi to work on his recalcitrant voice and makeit presentable and with his scholarly singing he won many hearts thereafter if mr.unnikrishnan doesn't correct his intonations in tamizh telugu etc hewould at some time ceaze to be given theA MOUNT OF RESPECT THAT HE IS GETTING NOW TOO what is more shocking is his attitude when the greatest of vidwans like NEDUNURI say that whenever they sing any tamizh composition they make it appoint to do the right word division,t give weight to some words when required(azhutthamaa padarathu) when the veterens like NEDUNURI etc ae of this ilk it actually hows mr.unni in abad light that he is not clearly pronouncing the words instead of sahityam he can sing the song as swarabased
I think you have accidentally ignored one thing that 20% of the audience (minimum) are not tamilians.. so it is imperative that we use a mixed language to make sure we convey what we really want to say.. and also he did not translate the songs into English or French!! so can we just come out of the so called "Tamil" passion which is a growing trend (just an act)... would have appreciated if both of you used tamil fonts.. and to answer Mr.Mulugu's comments on subbudu... Sir pls go read the same Subbudu Sir's review in Kalki back in 2001+ season... "If Yamaraj had come.. i would have asked him to wait till Unni completes Kaapi".. i think you understand english better!!
Fantastic carnatic vocals from the legend, Unni Krishnan Sir!
Music transcends language, only who are open minded can appreciate all good music. It's an excellent concert by the way

May be in oria language

First. Continuation of last reply. I didn't put the continuation of last reply in capital letters. Hope you read this carefully. From Kavya.
