- This is my rendition of Wayne Shorter's beautiful composition "Infant Eyes," one of my all-time favorites, performed on the Lumatone keyboard. The tuning is 31 tone equal temperament, and the keyboard mapping is the Bosanquet layout. I absolutely love this tune and really love the things you can do on it in 31 equal. This is the highest quality thing I've tried to do so far; recently got a proper HD camera and am trying to push some better stuff to the channel.
Gorgeous man. I can't imagine what's gonna happen when the new generation of internet prodigies gets a hold of instruments like this.
It’s already happening 😁
@@stephenweigel Well, you know, the little Emily Bears and Justin Lee-Schultzes of the world. It's gonna be insane.
Check out Georg Vogel. That'll probably give you a good idea honestly.
unlikely any of us will be alive to see that because of how much they cost and how likely it is that civilization will end with nuclear war rather than economic equality
You guys should check out this kid Jason Collihare. He's literally the best. We're talking Morzart good
I like how this fine of a control over your pitch almost lets you control the timbre. Some parts really sound like a piano but others more like gamelan or something else percussiony
Lol percussive?
Xylophones are percussive
This is lovely. Also, this guy should be playing this keyboard in a movie, bar scene on another planet. Much more what I'd actually picture than the Star Wars cantina scene. Though that was a rough and tumble place. This would be at the classy alien bar across town.
I can't get enough of the little chord at the end of the run at 1:21, it's like a bell. Gorgeous.
So peaceful. RIP Wayne
A sensational,treat !
Next level improv. How do you approach practise on such temperament? Start from a dissonance and expand, find a nice chord and chill around?
Wow. Amazing instrument and performance. I so much need this to be a scene and hang out in basements for entire weekends rocking to this. Thank you so much for sharing.
What a dream that would be. There's only so far we can go on our own in our own homes, I think.
It find pretty amazing how those microtones make the melody feel with that "vintage sound" that is mostly a product of distorted overtones caused by poor recording technologies. Masterfully done.
Wow you are the fucking master of Lumatone, love your sound, so inspiring, so musical, it makes a thousand times more sense than anything everybody else is playing, go on Mike!
Pristine. Helmholtz would be proud. Looking forward to more!
probably the best I've ever heard 31 edo done.
Best thing I've heard in a while. Thank you for uploadiong this wonderful creation
Beginning reminds me of Debussy ...Et la lune descend sur le temple qui fut. Beautiful!
So beautiful, the subtletly of intonation is just lovely. Gives different dominants distinct meanings, half-cadences suspense, and resolutions extra, um, resolve. Congratulations
Wonderful. Just the right mix of 12 and 31 EDO. Goes to show the great control of expression with this keyboard, tonally and velocity. All the subtleties of a great analogue piano performance. I was wondering how well the keyboard layout would work with standard piano like cross fingerings, looks quite natural. Thanks for sharing.
(There is no 12edo here but I think I get the point - there’s a good mixture of conventional vs. unconventional harmony)
We just love your playing *so* much!
nice to see you here
I’m impressed how far has the music come 😮
this is lovely! you and the lumatone seem to be made for each other!
Dude, I am absolutely obsessed with these. I have no idea how you’ve wrapped your head and fingers around this so organically but it is gorgeous and I’m all about it. ❤
Hell yeah Mike. This is the content we all needed. Those harmonies! Love all the stuff you're doing with the dieses these days, and also dug the four different "tritones", was that ~10/7 (acting as 23/16) to ~15/11 (acting as 11/8) at the end? Love that change. Wish I could get my tenths happening, they seem to be a huge part of the way you voice everything. Different hands I guess, gotta make do with what you got.
Also, really nice camera, can you send me a message sometime sharing the model and stand you're using? And are you just directly exporting audio from Pianoteq? Sounds great. More please!
Thank you Cam, appreciate your kind words... It was the "sharp-and-a-half 11" to the half-sharp 11 at the end, or 10/7 to 11/8, so basically yeah... The Lumatone makes it a little easier to get a 10th than a piano but yeah, can be kind of a stretch; how far can you get on a regular piano? As for the camera, it's the Panasonic GH4; very much recommended...
imma just going to like it straight off the bat
So many tasteful musical choices, well done ☺️
This came on randomly in the background and I was like "That's gotta be MIKE" Come find me I'm doing some fun things
this is so beautiful!!! (Edit: I finally transcribed it on my channel)
Love the note choices here all the way through!
31 edo is by far my favorite. And what you made is just incredible.
I am amazed. Seriously I am just speechless at how amazing this is
Quite the ear and talent. This is exactly the kind of content I come to RUclips to subscribe to.
I keep coming back to this - - so gorgeous!
Beautifully done! Is this Pianoteq? Whatever it is, the sound is very nice and crystal clear. Amazing playing in 31 TET!
Yes it's Pianoteq, the Grand Blüthner. Thank you and glad you enjoyed!
WTF....This is the coolest music i've ever heard
This music is so soothing... which makes sense with the title "Infant Eyes." Thanks for sharing.
Wow, 2 years after release and this pops in my recommended. Absolutely beautiful man, such a majestic sound!
Thank you! I like it very much.
this is how you approach microtonal music. your use of pitch is outstanding within the context of your progressions.
I have no clue what's happening but I like it
they're using more notes inside of an octave than the normal 12 to play music leading to all sorts of advantages, differences and innovations!
This is fantastic, thank you. It would be incredible with some hq samples or mastering 💛
This. Is. PHENOMENAL.
I love this so much!! I am listening to it everyday, since I found it (today is the 4th day)
nice to see some practical microtonal music! keep it up! :)
Really good
Great work, Mike.
This is lovely! This is the future!!
Starting at 4' this is the music I want to hear everyday 😍
what a brilliant piece of music to get lost to for a few minutes
This is freaking awesome! I have to get one.
This is awesome Mike - how do you go about transposing pieces into 31 EDO?
I want one of those keyboards so bad but they're soo expensive
Tasty tones
Absolutely wonderful
Wow, this has made my day!
you know that thing like a first language man
man you are such a blessing to mankind
Jeez, Mike.
Amazing! Your music keeps me focused whilst I study.
this is absolutely stunning
Yo this is sick
so beautiful!!
absolutely beautiful
Love this. Fantastic playing. Thanks
Yes i love it
Дуже гарно!
please put this on streaming services
Absolutely fantastic as usual, Mike.
Absolutely beautiful. Wow
Man you should record it and upload it to the streaming platforms!
Absolutely awesome
Love what you are doing here. Do you have differently 3rds to choose from depending on how deep into the keyboard you play? Because I can't see navigating a 31 note octave.
This is dope!
Literally mesmerizing
Sounds f*cking beautiful
Beautiful! Bravo! 👏
This was beautiful! Thank you.
Keep up the good work
Beautiful playing! Bravo
I forgot about this and stumbled across it again.
I was about to make a comment and realised I already had.
Thank you for such brilliant music.
Absolutely gorgeous Mike
rest in peace
Magic
Stellar!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! =)
Awesome 😎🔥
So inspiring!
oh wow...
This is where music needs to go! Beautiful work! I’m composing a lot in JI these days. Having a hard time getting both 1/6 tones and 1/4 tones w my notation software. Any ideas?
Are you using Dorico?
Beautiful performance. What awesome piano is this?
This is the Lumatone keyboard (lumatone.io), and I'm playing on the Pianoteq softsynth
how long does it take you to write a composition like this, or is it alot of improv?
Wow
please realease an album pleaaaase
Can you do "In The Bleak Midwinter" by Collier?
I did that one (on vanilla piano, not lumatone)
Master
id like a video review of this in general. how it feels to play etc. i was looking at the instruments like this and the chromatone. how is this layout compared to others? is the hexagonal shapes help at all with playing? i see the spacing is a little different compared to other janko keyboards. is this better? do you ever just use it for regular 12-tone music? how do the keys feel compared to traditional keyboards to play on?
Hey man. Dolores Catherino (@dolomuse) has done some reviews on polichromatic instruments, including the Lumatone. I think her channel might help you. Cheers
You should form a band with Robert Rich and Jon Catler. Robert actually sang on the Amoeba albums.
I wonder how dose sheet music for this even look
Like normal sheet music, the five line and the stave is the sme, but there are more sharp and flat symbols to reach the exstra tones.
Which scales are in it from a 12edo perspective?
check out the transcription on my channel for the scoop - mostly jazz chords with 31-TET intonation but some choices matter a lot (for instance the first Db sharp-9 flat-13 is spelled with E and A. The famous "Infant Eyes" chord with G flat over A - the A has to be spelled B double flat to keep more standard relationships with the other notes (you could spell it A shat). The xenharmonic D chords ascend in minor thirds, which don't close in 31-TET, so you get a big wilted polychord-sounding thing.
How
marian mcpartland fever dream
Wow. I haven't heard microtonal injections / inflections in an otherwise straight-up song.
What’s the piano sound?
I decided maybe I needed to scroll down the comments and see if I could find my answer. and I did. In case anyone else comes looking for the answer. it's Pianoteq the Grand Blüthner. I really enjoyed listening to this. I'm looking into getting this lumatone one day soon. A version with maybe lesser keys would be nice and possibly a little cheaper. I would definitely go for that.
Thx man yeah I'm dreaming of buying this right now, but I feel like I need the full size, it wouldn't be nearly as satisfying with less octaves or room for extra "sharps" and "flats". One fuckin day man
@@jamesmackiii8418 I actually ended up getting this.
You know, this seems a bit like a guitar neckboard.
debussy would approve
