Mike Battaglia | Come Sunday [Duke Ellington], (Yamaha CP-70)
Back to 12-EDO for a little bit! I visited my good friend and amazing musician Steve Brickman recently, and he has this great sounding Yamaha electric grand piano. The 80s had this sound everywhere in it - Hall and Oates, Toto, Journey, etc. But what I really liked was just playing it totally unplugged - it's a totally different sound, and it has this mellow and "angelic" quality that is very different from an ordinary piano. Here is a rendition of Duke Ellington's "Come Sunday" with this unique timbre. Hope you enjoy.

[Dabrye - Evelyn] - Playing around with some lo-fi in 31
Просмотров 3,6 тыс.2 года назад
Getting really into lo-fi these days and thought I'd improvise on an old favorite of mine. This is Dabrye's tune Evelyn off the album Instrmrntl. The track is 12 but I'm playing along in 31. Also posted to my Instagram where I may in the future sometimes post little shorts like these: pCcFT-ZduAh1/
Trying out some 15-EDO on Lumatone
Просмотров 3,2 тыс.2 года назад
Phew, what a huge backlog of videos I got. Thought I'd just upload something quick while I get through the rest of this... I'm writing this tune in 15-EDO and thought I'd do a quick little improv on it just for fun. 15 is a really neat tuning - it has tons of new chords and scales, and makes it easy to get some really trippy sounds without much effort. All of the scales I'm using in this were g...

I just turned 34 years old so thought I'd repost this. Actually posted this last year, as a private video to a friend for her birthday, but thought you'd all enjoy it as well. Happy birthday to whoever's birthday it is! Feel free to share :) Tuning is 31-EDO.
Mike Battaglia | The Sun Is In Your Eyes [Jacob Collier] (31-EDO, Lumatone)
Просмотров 12 тыс.3 года назад
This is my rendition of Jacob Collier's beautiful tune "The Sun Is In Your Eyes." This tune appeared in my Spotify feed as a "Voice Memo" from Jacob Collier's EP a few months ago... it's very different from his usual style but I think it's absolutely beautiful and may be my all-time favorite song of his. This is in 31-EDO on the Lumatone using my Bosanquet layout, played using the Grand Blüthne...

Просмотров 1,3 тыс.3 года назад
This is a Facebook live stream from May 11th. The tuning is in 31-EDO, the mapping is the Bosanquet layout. The feed was unfortunately cut midway, near the end of Slow Cheetah. The two parts have been spliced together; the next feed will use a proper HD camera and professional streaming software. 1:46 - Chrono Trigger - Secret of the Forest 13:12 - Red Hot Chili Peppers - Slow Cheetah 20:49 - T...
Mike Battaglia | Infant Eyes [Wayne Shorter] (31-EDO, Lumatone)
Просмотров 44 тыс.3 года назад
This is my rendition of Wayne Shorter's beautiful composition "Infant Eyes," one of my all-time favorites, performed on the Lumatone keyboard. The tuning is 31 tone equal temperament, and the keyboard mapping is the Bosanquet layout. I absolutely love this tune and really love the things you can do on it in 31 equal. This is the highest quality thing I've tried to do so far; recently got a prop...

This is a Facebook live stream from April 30th. For Things Behind the Sun, the tuning is 19-EDO; for Alfie it's 31-EDO. The mapping is the Bosanquet layout for both. Set list: 0:18 - Nick Drake - Things Behind the Sun 8:22 - Burt Bacharach - Alfie

Просмотров 1,1 тыс.3 года назад
This is a Facebook live stream from April 16th; originally for a small group of friends at 4 AM but reposted here. The tuning is in 31-EDO and the mapping is the Bosanquet layout, except for the last tune where I tried the "neutral" or "double Bosanquet" layout. Set list: 0:23 - Wayne Shorter - Infant Eyes 6:53 - Beatles - Norwegian Wood 13:42 - Playing Free 18:40 - Miles Davis - Blue in Green ...

Просмотров 15 тыс.3 года назад
This is Herbie Hancock's "Speak Like A Child" played on the Lumatone in 31 tone equal temperament using the "Bosanquet" layout (with my colors). Herbie is one of my favorite composers in any genre, and one of the first that I really got into and spent time with. I am still very new to the Lumatone (have been playing it maybe 6 days or so) and am only able to play a small fraction of the things ...

Like normal sheet music, the five line and the stave is the sme, but there are more sharp and flat symbols to reach the exstra tones.

The comments, tho sweet, show a lack of historical perspective. We applaud Mike & dig Wayne's work, but music hasn't somehow evolved into "better than it's ever been." Research music history. Having said that, maybe the world is finally ready for microtonality? Probably not, but hope remains...

  • @maikeru01

for me its cool. when you go down the scale it sounds robot or mechanical or chromatic or something. that's the most obvious place i can hear the extra tones. but i'm not sure if normies will like it. i think the best comparison to make is between music and food. way too many people eat nothing but fast food and junk food. it is designed by people with billions of dollars and psychologist researchers on staff to be maximally addictive and hit their dopamine centers hard. It's exactly like pop music. And what you are trying to do is make complex complimentary but unconventional flavor combinations using fresh ingredients. Like foie gras sushi with multiple layers of textures and temperatures and seasonings. But then most people are like "yea i just want french fries smothered in msg, mayonnaise and ketchup and fried in the cheapest oil you got." That's how you can tell the difference between a person trying to sell a product and a person trying to create art. I know you are playing this because it's what you like because I know it's not going to have mass appeal.

I'd be curious what kind of slower rhythms and intervals with more legato playing would sound good in microtonal music. This jazzy staccato playing seems to lend itself well to microtonal.
