    I was one of the engineers assisting with some of the testing for the Hummer EV. At one point the lead test engineer said he needed my help to open the hood, since it turns out the hood is both power operated and software controlled.
    If the auxiliary battery of your Hummer EV dies, it will prevent the hood from opening, preventing you from accessing the dead battery, basically sealing itself inside. Additionally, this battery cannot be charged nor accessed anywhere from outside the vehicle. A bit like James May's Tesla battery issue but far far worse.
    There is a manual open underneath the dash, but it has to be yanked on really really hard with a wrench. I chuckled to the lead test engineer saying "doesn't this seem like it would be a huge problem?" And he replied "yeah, it isn't the first time this has happened".. but seeing this made it to production I guess they didn't care.
    Don't know why absolutely every feature needs to be electric, sometimes those good old mechanical bits should just stay mechanical, even on the cars of the future.

    • @mrbob9556
      @mrbob9556 Год назад +15

      That battery should be able to recharge from the main battery with a bypass switch. I'm sure it gets low after being in the factory parking lot for who knows how long and flashers, radio, lights will contribute to the injury.

      Why tf would I or anyone else buy this shot? I can do lots of my own repairs on mechanical vehicles. I’ll keep driven gas powered until they are no more. This whole thing is just a money/power grab by elites. The auto Industry already makes more off of repairs than sales. This will also put small shops out of business as only dealerships will be equipped to repair. The whole thing is not for the benefit of Americans

    That hood release ring under the dash is a good thing to know! No matter whether it is full electric or hybrid, it's valuable to know where the 12 volt battery (usually an AGM sealed lead acid) is, and how to get to it, when everything goes 'dead'. I've had to disconnect the 12 volt battery to reset my 2006 second generation Toyota Prius hybrid. Make sure you keep the tools necessary in the car/truck, so you can actually disconnect the battery terminal.

The mechanical engineer hops out and says I've got this, opens up the hood pokes around for a bit can't seem to find any kind of issue. Civil engineer says stand back let me examine the road make sure that this road they were driving on is in good condition and did not cause the issue. Civil engineer expects the road determines that it is in good order. Finally the computer engineer steps up and says I've got this one, no problem. The computer engineer closes all the windows, turns it off, turns back on it says, look at that it's working again.

The only time I've had a similar situation with the H3 was when I accidentally hit the "low" button not long after purchase. Thank God I was in a parking lot AND had a hardcopy manual. OnStar did the same thing and called for a tow, the dealer said they had no idea why I could only go 12 miles p/h, so no help there. The manual explained it and I fixed it so no tow needed. As an engineer in the automotive electrified power train industry (FCA), I watched this video with great interest. It was in a sense, a little frustrating for me, because I was trying to talk to the screen to tell you what to do, believe it or not. Federal regulations require that you must be able to open the front hood manually. All electrified powertrain vehicles have an MSD (master disconnect). This is what all fire departments know about when they respond to a vehicle fire. Once you disconnect the traction battery, and then restore power to it, the car will automatically step you through a calibration process that has nothing to do with the problem you were experiencing.
    There is no excuse for this problem that you have experienced. The engineers at General Motors should hang their heads in shame. But at the same time, it is an absolute miracle that the thing even works at all. The complexity in this thing astounds the imagination. Likely, the real problem is that as a society, we are moving too quickly into electrified power train.

    So, in a few weeks the dealer will call to let you know you can pick up your truck. When you get there, they will tell you they could not recreate the condition.

    This is happening to a lot of expensive vehicles. You guys should do a whole segment on this. Listen to ppl dealing with lemons and have them come on your channel, random shut downs, etc.. Call out these companies, hold them accountable.

      I think they are aware that there are issues in other vehicles, but the point they are trying to make is how this issue left the owner stranded in a dangerous situation. But more importantly, the vehicle lacked intuitive controls or mechanisms that would allow the user to reset the system.

      My new GMC AT4 was dead in my driveway the first day with 180 miles on it. It was stuck in what I call “accessories mode”. Fan was on at full speed could not turn fan down or off, could not start engine and could not shut the It off or get it in neutral. Dealer said it was a bad battery, well yeah the batter died after it sat stuck in my driveway all day with the accessories on. The dealer put a new battery in the car assured me that fixed the problem, a few days later check engine light is back on. 3 weeks later check engine light has been on every day, dealer said I hit a bird and took out a shutter on the front grille and he was so proud to show me the missing shutter, The service advisory was confident that was the problem and would order the shutter assembly. He was a little embarrassed when I asked if he ordered enough to fix all the new AT4’s on the lot, he looked at me confused when I said all his trucks on the lot must have also hit a bird as they were also “missing” the same shutter vane. I then explained that the truck never had the Vane and it was designed that way.
      I should have stuck with the ugly Tundra, but one more service appointment and I qualify for lemon law.

      Coal powered vehicles aka EV's are only viable when the government forces you to buy one or it tries to bribe you to buy one. No thanks. If they were any good, people would be pounding down the doors to buy them - instead we have failure after failure, power outages and unicorn dreams.
