- Adolf von Baeyer was a German chemist who contributed greatly to the dye industry by mapping structures of multiple chemical compounds responsible for these dyes. His main contributions revolve around indigo, but also has connections to numerous other compounds, such as alizarin and triphenylmethane dyes. Von Baeyer's achievements helped spark a dye revolution that collapsed the dye growing industry and ignited the dye synthesis industry. He won the Nobel Prize in 1905 to his contributions to dyes, especially to indigo.

Yes! William Henry Perkin discovered mauveine on accident
He was British and synthesized it in 1856

That was a very cute and very informative video. Thank you very much. I expected this video to be a rehash of some history I’d heard, but I didn’t have the right story in mind at all. So this is new to me. Since you know a lot though, what was the exact story behind artificial violet production? I thought it was a university student who discovered as some byproduct of coal tar. Asking because every once in a while I like to share it as a fun fact and I wanted to make sure I was referencing the story correctly.
