Final Fantasy 4 DS did that long before. But if there's a hidden meaning, then I don't know what it is.
There's a really clever touch here. In the original Hyadain cover, the lyrics are in the pattern of Scarmiglione+Cagnazzo and then Barbariccia+Rubicante, matching up with the order they appear in that game. In XIV, the order is a bit different, so in this version of the song they have it so Wind and Earth are paired instead ("Earth befouled, fierce winds howl") and Water and Fire too ("Flames consume, tides subsume") and they stick to that pairing through the whole song, matching the way they're paired in XIV. Super creative, love it!

If you want an even funnier note that matches, The Woman during the bridge lists them in order of Appearance in XIV. Earth, Wind Water Fire.

I don’t know who they get to write the lyrics to a lot of their songs but so many of them go so hard. Always a combination of great character relevance, well written language and catchy as hell.

It's insane for me to think that this song would've never seen the light of day if FF4 game designer haven't seen FF14 doing remakes of Barbariccia and Scarmiglione fights and never decided he should write lyrics for "Battle with the four Fiends" and if someone at SE never had a moment of sheer genius remembering that old fan cover and suggesting they should contact the author to help them do a new version.

I haven't done the fight yet but this song threw me for a LOOP, the Hyadain cover was basically gospel to me as a kid. I heard the violin in the beginning and I was 10 again... Mad respect for them bringing Hyadain straight on for this
Little fun fact about the arena and background for the Archfiends:
The four archfiends are named after demons in Dante's Inferno, being 4 of the 12 members of a gang known as the Malebranche, who guard the fifth Bolgia of the Eighth Circle of Hell. This is where people who try to get rich or positions of power through immoral means (think blackmailers, land speculators, and politicians) go, where they're forced to swim in a pool of burning tar, and it's the Malebranche's job to prevent anyone from leaving it by stabbing anyone who escapes with barbs and hooks.
so in this fight, Rubicante is quite literally opening a portal to hell, possibly to drag you into it.

The lyricist, Takashi Tokita, was Squaresoft part-time staff for the first three FFs until he became lead designer for FFIV. He went to work on future projects like being director for Parasite Eve, Live A Live and Chrono Trigger. He is now a senior manager and producer in SE's Business Division 8.

FF4 absolutely blew me away, so I was over the moon when Endwalker started featuring a ton of FF4 stuff XD
Coming full circle with Hyadain actually composing an official remix of the 4 Fiends theme 14 years later was such a crowning moment on this awesome story arc and fun dungeons/trials. I just feel so moved, this remix sounds incredible, and I kept cranking up the volume between aoes XD

This song. This damn song. FFIV was my first and my favorite FF. To see my favorite boss from my favorite game have such an amazing remix… it’s emotional honestly.
Seeing the lyrics has broken my brain because ISTG I heard them name drop Golbez and one of the lines sounded like 'give in to this nascent melody' but apparently neither of those things are in the song. Amazing.
Golbez is in the meme version done years ago by Hyadain -- whom squeenix brought in for this one.
So Scarmiglione, Barbariccia, Cognazzo, and Rubicante are all from The Divine Comedy by Dante Alighieri (so is Beatrice from The Fell Court of Troia, I was really struggling to remember her from FF4 before I remembered this), so I gotta give a tip of the hat to Soken for thinking to make the vocals for this FF4 track sing in the style of Italian Opera.
Wait, that's where the original names are from? I thought it was random keyboard mashing during FFIV's creation and they went "yeah, this'll work."
The world of darkness seems to be inspired by Italy 😄 the names and the architecture

I don't know if its a coincidence or if its intended, but I love that Forged in Crimson and Scream which are both from Endwalker mentions that "the gods wouldn't hear the WoL's cries". And we do see the gods in the new raids. I wonder if there's some connection there

Underrated part of this song, the first few seconds luring you in to a "oh okay i guess were just doing a battle against the 4 archfiends theme again" and then it hits you with the GOTCHYA. similar to how p5-8 starts with the non lyrics version of scream for the first one and you're set up like "oh okay i guess it will be 3 orchestral and then the final boss will be with lyrics , like in the first wing" and then they turn it around and raise the stakes, smacking you with a hemitheos AND the lyrics version right on the 2nd fight. very clever meta use of music there

I was hoping for a long time to see FFIV stuff in FFXIV, especialy the four elemental fiends. And I really did hope the music would be as similar as possible to the Hyadain version but I thought it was merely impossible. Damn. What a good surprise!

This is easily one of the best fights and songs in Endwalker.
The song is great, but the fight is the worst of any extreme or savage released in the entire expansion so far imo, it’s just 80% follow the leader, 15% mechanics we’ve seen before and a limit cut style mechanic that any good group can skip

One thing I feel brilliant about their use of Japanese singers, using Italian opera style, for English lyrics.
It really helps muddle the comprehension to make it sound mysterious and archaic.
