M2 MacBook Air | M1 MacBook Air Still a Better Buy?

  • Is the M1 MacBook Air a better buy over the M2 MacBook Air when it comes to actual sales and better overall value? And, will you wait for the M2 MacBook Air due to the likely delays? After WWDC 2022 I'm sure many of you were excited of the M2 announcement, but it seems that the price of the M2 MacBook Air at $1199 USD might seem reasonable and expected, but the price seems to be higher in other countries.

    M2 in the Air sounds nice for content creation when I'm on the road, but I'm not there yet and likely won't be until at least this time next year. I'll need to rewatch your vids showing real world performance with the encoding on the M1 vs M1 Max/Ultra. I think upgrading now from my 16gb M1 Mini would have me in the diminishing returns area for my use-case. Whenever I'm actually ready for something portable I'll probably go with a Pro for the XDR display. Maybe by that time the Air will have a better display. Or I'll just go with the Air and deal with having a completely adequate display and saving money.

    • @KevinRossRN
      @KevinRossRN  2 года назад

      Yeah, that M1 mini is great and I still use it. Very capable. Once you’re looking for portability, or really needing/wanting it, then the Air would be fine for most workflows in the creative space.
      It’s when you really start to add some complexity where that thermal headroom is needed in something like the pro. But I’d guess that XDR may stick with the Pro for the time being until there’s a next iteration where an XDR could slide into the Air without it “bleeding” into the Pro line.
      Appreciate you hanging out.

    I went around with this for an hour the other day, and how I'll use it.. honestly if it came with SD card, HDMI output and the cool colors like we thought they where coming out with.. I would order.. but it's a 18% faster and a little better.. and what I intend to use... honestly I'm thinking of getting a 11" 2014 Mac Book Air as a portable word processor for typing on the go. I see those for about $200 and they are not longer supported, can't use the latest OS.. but for having a small disposable netbook for "Pages" Safari etc... I might go that route.. oh and I still love my Mac mini M1. Best Buy of mine in 20 years. maybe in 6 months when I get to shooting / editing more of my Blackmagic Pocket Cinema 4K BRAW I may move to the Mac Studio. $2,000 version perhaps.. but yeah mini m1 is solid.. and external hard drive arrays is probably more important for me.. and maybe a knock about 11" MBA for on the go writing. leave my large clunky 15" MBP or iPad with Bluetooth keyboard that takes up more volume and have to plug everything together.. But anyone else miss the Mac Netbook style 11"? If it was 11" M1 with SD card and cool bright fun colors.. I would be on preorder.

    • @KevinRossRN
      @KevinRossRN  2 года назад +1

      Yeah, I had a colleague with that same 11” footprint. Felt like it could fit in my back pocket. 😉
      But definitely, if you’re just managing those tasks on the go, I think it would be fine. Although I’d remember those fans spinning up the more RAM intensive tasks you asked it to handle.
      Once the wedge disappears I could see the older models holding some value, based on that nostalgia.

      @@KevinRossRN True. My needs are simple - light DaVinci or FCP editing and Lightroom or similar - no fancy Photo Shop stuff. If I knew the M1 Air w/16 gb could handle those without the dreaded beach ball, I’d get by with no MagSafe and extra I/O, and have one by July 4. I’d just hate to mis-buy. Fortunately, I don’t need it for professional use. You still have the best channel out there in this realm 👍

      Wait until all the videos start popping up. “The new M2 MacBook Air beats the M1 Max MacBook Pro” or something that. The comments section will be fun to watch on those videos.
      But I don’t personally plan on or expect these M2 machines to be a threat to the MacBook pros for those that are really using these to scale up their workflow beyond what an ultraportable is designed to do.
      However the next year or so will be interesting to see how things shake out when these chips barely need any thermal headroom. Then we might start seeing these being preferred over a Pro. 🤷‍♂️
      Appreciate you. Many thanks for your time.

    Honestly, I'm waiting for M2 PRO. And that might even be 1 year away to be honest. But... currently I am happy using my Desktop PC at home, and my Intel MBP16 from work for when I travel. So until I still have this system I am not upgrading. Makes 0 sense. But... if I was to return my work laptop (which I might in near future) I am actually considering the M2... However, I'd still likely go for M1 PRO (MBP14 prob to keep that portability - carrying that MBP16 is not always fun)

      The base model (8GBs of RAM) would be fine for general tasks like that, but if you can find a little extra in your budget, I do recommend 16. Well, not sure if this helps, but I will be getting the MBA M2 mostly for corporate use. Running my other business. This will include running several apps we’ve built, along with virtual machines, typical office work, etc. Way more under the hood than I’d need for those tasks.
      As far as the occasional editing, I agree the M1 is more than capable. The nice thing about these M2 chipsets is the media encoders, which are similar to the M1 Max (essentially), and so being able to work with heavier codecs and complicated timelines for rough cutting footage will be nice, IF I needed this on the move when I’m not near my MBP.
      For me, I typically keep separate machines for each business.
      I’ll be testing the creative use cases on the M2, but once I’m done with all of that testing, it’ll then be converted to that corporate device.
      The M1 Pro will likely be compared (heavily) to the M2 MBA, and I expect you’ll see plenty of videos on why you should choose the M1 Pro over the MBA, especially for thermal headroom and more creative focused tasks.
      For many of us here on the platform, we do tend to have several devices. For me however, each device must be put into rotation and used, rather than sitting on a shelf or taken back to the store after I’ve made my video 😏
      Anyway, I think we’re going to find a lot of similarities with the 14 inch footprint and this new MBA.
      I’d say to not spend money just to spend it, but if you decide to make the investment, how do you see yourself using these two devices?
      The MBP being more of a desktop replacement while the MBA being your everyday carry? 🤷‍♂️🤔

      They’ll be great machines for those that have yet to invest in these SoCs.

      @@KevinRossRN so true, if someone hasn't purchased the m1 then this m2 isn't a bad buy, but I'm wondering if I would like the design, if it had the card reader I'd 100% get this, but I remember I owned the MacBook Air and I really loved the shape, when I went to the MacBook Pro 13" it was more of a downgrade in comfort which was odd because honestly I prefer the wedge on my palms from the air
      I'm wondering if this would be the case, it might be fun to compare the max spec air m1 vs the m2 model because I just love the classics, I'm still on my iMac 2020 i9 10 core and I still enjoy life, and haven't really found the need to edit on the go but I'm traveling to Philippines in September it would be nice to have something light to get some work done.
      pretty interesting perspective you got there. still thinking about your studio + Mac air combo, is it still the case with the m2 or does that make it more expensive, and you can get away with a 14" or 16" and spec it out then plug in a monitor for back home?

      Yeah, I’d like to pick up the “equivalently” spec’d M2 Air to compare to the M1. The one place I see the advantage of the M2 for video editors is that media engine that’ll play nicely with that 264 and 265 codec. The SD card reader is something I use all the time, so I’d miss this if it were my only portable.
      And as far as the studio and the M2 combo, I’m finding more and more where I’m choosing the portable option over a desktop. With the M2, I could see this happening more.

      @@KevinRossRN oh you're saying that the m2 will play nicer with pro-res and other of the newer codecs, thats what my iMac is missing, I can cut through raw video like butter but when it comes to the new formats, its a different story... I'm patiently waiting for your 2 cents!! because I just love that gold in the m1 was there anything your m1 air was sluggish with? or it does everything you throw at it? studio I feel like is out of this world but then when u go ultra you need a specific use case to utilize the performance, I learn so much from your videos!! thanks Kevin
      ooo I wasn't expecting that. so you would prefer the laptop over the desktop I guess that the performance is literally so good these days that would be the case. wow. thats so awesome to know!!

      Yeah, the performance in these portable devices doesn’t make me “want” for a desktop, which didn’t used to be the case.
      And yes, I bet we’ll see a lot of comparisons between the M2 and the M1 pro because the Max has those video encoders, but the Pro doesn’t, so it could make folks swing over to the M2 rather than invest in the M1 Pro.
      But yeah, my M1 has been fine. I think the only issues I’ve found is when I’m working with something like DJI footage, or Insta360 or GoPro…when the timeline is a bit more complicated. The Max has no issues with those, however I don’t really mess with those codecs too much.
