well articulated, love this video. on a side note, i find it so ironic that not so long ago, everyone and their mother was lauding apple with the release of the m1 mba, and today seemingly everyone is crucifying them for the m2 mba. what a difference an additional $200 makes. tho that being said, nerfing the ssd on the base model and not saying a thing about it was absolutely unforgiveable and distasteful, and apple should be held accountable.
Yeah the M1 still deserves to be in the line up. Day-to-day I don’t notice any “real” performance differences. Not unless I’m benchmarking, but that’s just not where the actual value is (with synthetic benchmarks). It’ll be interesting to see how Apple may continue to walk this back, and if they end up making changes in the current M1 NAND, then that will certainly be a kick in the teeth. Appreciate your time and comment on this.
Bottom line for me, this computer is amazing. I received mine on Monday and it is really a step up from the 2016 13inch MBP. I have the 256 GB SSD, 16 GB ram and upgraded gpu. Hasn’t gotten warm, battery life is amazing, no slowdown, etc.
@thedavidj1996, I am also planning to buy M2 15 inch base model 256 SSD but worrying about slow SSD issue. My use will be basic task just like browsing safari, watching you tube, zoom/skype meeting and MS office work etc. Not for any heavy usage like coding or photo editing. I would like to know whether you have found any lag or thermal throttling while transferring or downloading or uploading docs, photos or video with base model. Does one NAND chip affect the performance in base M2 Air model? Kevin suggested me to upgrade RAM instead of SSD but since you are using the same machine, I would like to know your suggestion. Thanks.
Well said. It is not the issue of whether or not it is "enough". Apple has to be bashed for making a newer gen machine performing slower than the previous gen while charging more and keeping silent about it, and they should be continuously bashed until they are held accountable and stop this evil practice.
Glad to have you here on this one. This has been a highly anticipated device, and now that it’s out, it seems that the disappointment is just has high as that anticipation was.
Crikey, that is well OTT; "evil practice", really? You need to get out more, there is nothing evil about this. It is Apple doing what they want to do as they are the OEM. You are the consumer, and if you do not like it, then do not buy it! There are far worse stuff going on in the world than a slower SSD especially when no one is forcing it on you! Get over it. If you do not like Apple, buy Dell, HP, or whatever!
How much I like this guy! I don't have a modern Apple computer (just a late 2012 mac mini), but ever since the M1 configurations were announced it annoys the hell out of me how many youtubers (not you) claimed 8GB to be enough for everything or close to that. Increased speed doesn't change capacity and requirements, it doesn't change physics. No matter how good the architecture is. The new Air continues with this, it's a great tool as long as you realize the limitations and don't fall to marketing and/or certain youtubers. Thanks for another great video.
Yep, a fantastic piece of kit, and I plan to use it for awhile, but definitely a placeholder. We would have been fine with M1, but the optics called for something to build some fresh excitement until the next “innovation.”
I just think it's crazy how this is a base model yet we continue to compare it to top of the line models that should be enough for you to know the base model is more than likely enough
@@KevinRossRN yeah this, and many other, were very helpful in helping me decide if i should fork over more money. Ultimately decided if people are pushing this base model to those limits and still being able to get work done, my essays and web browsing is nothing to this thing haha
Hi, I'm running about 15 to 20 internet tabs (youtube, multiple google drives), as long as telegram, email and an anti detect browser with about 10-20 sessions. I also do some light video editing from time to time Is the base model enough for it or should I get an uppgrade ?
@@KevinRossRN I might be able to increase my budget but only if it’s worth it 👍 I also might run parallels on it, so I suppose the 16go ram should be mandatory ? As for the ssd, is there any difference for my use to be in 256 or 512 speed wise ? I plan to try to not use any external stuff as I would like to be as mobile as possible
Helpful video, thanks. (M1 Air owner, sometimes tempted to go M2 but not necessarily in a rush - I wanted to see videos like this that break it all down.) One question though -- the wallpaper/desktop at 5:50 (purples and black), where did you find that? If it's included in MacOS I just never noticed.
Thanks! Glad to have you here on this one. And yeah, I’d say no rush if you’re looking for a performance boost. And as far as the wallpaper, it might seem a bit morbid, but it’s a piece of art of cancer cells. It’s in the National Cancer Institute section over on Unsplash: unsplash.com/photos/zoFbfT0M_BU Again, not the most uplifting visual when you know what it is, but I’m very much a science nerd.
@@KevinRossRN Wow, I would never have guessed (or found) that image. I see they have a number of them but the purple/black is really striking, imo. So I wouldn't say it's morbid, I'm definitely going to use it. :) OK, thanks for letting me know! And I'm still pretty sure I'm sticking with my M1 at least for the time being. Thanks again.
I loved the colors on this one for sure. Hope you enjoy it. And, I hope you continue to enjoy your M1. I still think it’s the best value for a portable device.
I'm too much confused between 14 inch Macbook Pro and iMac 16GB RAM 512GB SSD For professional 4K editing for Wedding and RUclips But here in my city I often face electricity issue so MBP is a better choice but people say iMac is best for professional video editing. And I'll be needing a monitor if I purchase MBP 14" So what do you say about this?
An external monitor is definitely helpful with video editing, but do you need a MBP because you want to be portable? Or is it just because of the power outages?
@@KevinRossRN We can say both for now power is the issue in the future portability will be too, I'm also looking for Mac Mini as well so please help me out
I have the Mac mini and love that as well. However I think you just answered your own question. If portability is going to be a goal, even if it’s in the future, I would assume it’s in the not so distant future. Therefore the power and portability of the 14 inch will serve you well. You’re not going to find a display as good as the one that’s built into the iMac (not on a budget that is), however there are options out there for an external display that won’t break the bank and serve you quite well.
Hey Kevin, don’t be hungry, go grab some lunch. Then start working on that next video, please. I always enjoy the heck out of your work! It’s been two weeks now with my M2 MBA (8/10 core, 16gb UM, 2 TB ssd, Silver). What a beautiful machine, love everything about it, love it more than my M1 MBA. I use it for video editing along with my Silver 16inch M1 Max MBP.
Yeah, I hadn’t been able to eat breakfast and just got back from a run, but just needed to get that video recorded before my kids got back home from soccer. I’ve had to get creative with them being home during the day for the summer 😉 And, really awesome that your M2 is taking over. So you’re finding it to be capable for your creative workflow?
@@KevinRossRN for the video editing I do it works perfectly fine. I mostly do personal projects (family stuff with my 3 little girls) on Final Cut that were recorded on my Sony a7siii or a7iv and not that many plugins or luts, just basic 422, 10 bit 4K. I love the 16 inch Max but the M2 is just so easy to use.
The M2 is definitely ultraportable. I really love that aspect. And that’s awesome you’re able to edit that 10-bit footage. When I was originally testing the A7siii on the M1 MBA I was pretty floored at how well it performed. For the rough cut of the timeline the M2 definitely works beautifully. I can usually add a LUT and some plug-ins, but then when I do more grading and another LUT added this is when I start to see it’s reluctance 🤣 But if the rumors are true for a 15 inch MBA…oh boy. It’s going to be even tougher. Appreciate you sharing this perspective.
And I very much appreciate you. I know there’s a variety of content here outside of the Apple space, but certainly enjoy when you have time/interest to make it over here.
@KevinRossRN, I want to replace my aging intel based MBA 2017 and have shortlisted MBA M2 13 or 15 inch. My use will be official work basic task like web browsing, emails, facebook/zoom meeting, you tube watching, MS office (word, excel, powerpoint), pdf file creation and normal file transfer thru emails etc. I wont need it for coding or photo editing etc but just for normal basic use mentioned above. My question is whether the base model 8/256 GB is enough for me or do I need to upgrade RAM or SSD for MBA M2 due to slow SSD issue. Will appreciate your feedback.
I still use this machine daily for those very tasks. I will say that I don’t restart my machine very often, which isn’t really needed in my opinion. However, that being said, I do find myself pushing the limits of the memory with all of those tasks throughout the day. The swap is efficient and I don’t even notice it, but I do have a 1TB SSD in it. One of the reasons I upgraded the internal storage was because I knew I didn’t want to be tethered to an external SSD…and thus far I haven’t ever needed one. The machine will be a massive leap from your 2017 machine. You’ll love it. The question is though, aside from a slower SSD (I don’t think it’s that big of an issue), will you appreciate more space? And as far as the memory, I think you’ll be fine, but again, if this is a machine you’ll keep around for a while, then I also believe the memory is a worthwhile upgrade. In my opinion and use case that is.
@KevinRossRN, thanks for your response. So you are suggesting me to upgrade the RAM instead of SSD. The slower SSD wont be an issue in my case for basic use. Then will upgrade the RAM to 16GB instead of 8GB and keep the SSD at 256GB. Is it ok? But then there wont be any lag while transferring files (word, excel, jpeg, pdf, png) or videos due to one NAND chip in 256 SSD. Btw Have you noticed any heating issue with M2 Air 15 inch? Will appreciate your feedback.
@shreyaswalawalkar8066 I would advise adding more memory because you can always add an external SSD if you need to. However, if this is going to be your daily machine, I would consider more storage. I know it doesn’t seem right that Apple should provide more as a base, but honestly, if you can find it in your budget, I’d recommend building the machine that will provide you years of frustration free experiences. I know there are tests out there that show the 8GBs is efficient, but again, I use this thing every day and I do not want the hassle of restarting it or having to close down programs. As far as the 15 inch I’m actually rocking the 13.6 these days, so I don’t have any input on the 15 at this time, although I’ll likely be picking one up here in the near future.
@KevinRossRN, I purchased new MacBook Air M2 base model 8/256 version from Apple Authorised Seller yesterday. Since 16/512 or 16/256 was not available at the store so I had no choice to purchase the base model M2. Well just want to know whether it is common issue to have a battery at 0% when I unbox the device and opened up the lid. Generally when we open the lid then the apple logo immediately pop up but in my case the logo didn’t display when the lid was open. But when I plugged in with magsafe then the logo appears in 3-4 seconds. I charged it upto 10% in the store itself. During my previous purchase, I didn’t experience such issue with MacBook. I checked battery capacity which is 100% at its origin capacity. No issues found in diagnostic too. The device was manufactured in September 2023. But still I dont understand the reason for not popping up the Apple logo instantly once the lid open. So just want to confirm whether it is common issue or battery drain or faulty device. I charged my MacBook at home upto 100% but the doubt is still remain in my mind. Should I check with Apple Service Centre? Your input will be appreciated in this matter. Thanks..
@shreyaswalawalkar8066 you’re the second person that’s shared this in the last couple of weeks or so. I’ve never had this issue from an Apple store directly, but it’s possible in an authorized dealer store if the machine has been sitting for awhile. See if you can run it through a cycle or two charged up and use it, then let it drain to check and see if the battery’s condition is as it should be. In the other case where someone shared a similar situation they were saying the battery drained way too fast, especially in sleep mode.
Every aspect of M2 seems to be better except the SSD… if it must be 256gb, do the other features outweigh the slow SSD for primarily video editing? Better machine sadly isn’t in the budget, just between M1 air for $70 less.
I’d say that the M2 will give you “more” than $70 worth of features over the M1. Also, the SSD being slower will still be plenty fast for editing. The programs can only read/write so fast, especially on the MBA where the GPU is going to be limited.
You mentioned that, at the end of the day, these devices are still disposable. What do you mean by that and what would you recommend to replace my 2016 MacBook Pro 13 inch. I will be dipping my toes into editing 4K videos from my iPhone for a RUclips series. I’D REALLY APPRECIATE YOUR HELP! 🤙🏼
Since Apple has really started building these without any option to upgrade it really comes down to having the longevity that you purchase from the beginning. Not to mention that if something breaks, which I’ve had many Mac devices and all but one was nearly perfect as far as how it held up. So it’s definitely an investment from the beginning since the memory and the SSD are non upgradeable, although I still edit on external SSDs anyway. I think the 14 Pro, if you can find it on a deal, which if you’re in the U.S. then they are always on special. But it’s a great machine for the price (on sale that is). These M1 Macs can certainly handle 4K footage as long as the camera codec you’re working with isn’t too complicated. iPhone footage is definitely easy, and even more so with the M2. Do you have a budget in mind?
@@KevinRossRN ahh I see what you mean. And my budget is under $1400. I was considering a MacBook or a Mac Mini, although I’d have to find an external display (I have a Logitech Keys for Mac keyboard and an MX Master 2S mouse already). The iPad enticed me but I already bought Final Cut Pro a few years ago so might as well use it.
The Mac mini has been an incredible investment. I still use it. Hands down the best bang for the buck. Just upgrade the memory. If you went with the MacBook Air whether M1 or M2, either of these should fill the need…but same for the memory. I use the M2 every day, but I don’t really edit on it although for your use you’d be fine. Same with the M1. If you don’t really care about portability then the Mac mini is really hard to beat.
@@KevinRossRN thanks man I really appreciate your help ✊🏼 I still have 1.5 months left to decide but I think you’ve helped me choose the Mac mini. Now I just have to find a decent monitor haha
Looking forward to a look a that new review+insight on the MacBook Pro M2 14 inch. Interesting that you noted a pref for Google when you mention a Teams meeting and being in healthcare. Seems that M365 and Microsoft are more prevalent in healthcare. Want I intend to do, just what works for me, is to use Windows365 with my M365 for those workloads and running the Apple / Google apps more locally. We'll see how it goes. LOVE THE SHIRT!!!! Great vid as always Kev!
Yeah I’ve been immersed in Google for quite some time. I flex between Teams and Google Meet, and funny that I’m now consulting with an organization (very large) that’s all Google and no Microsoft. Not even Office for data entry or Word. 🤷♂️ I’ve been using the M2 MBA daily…like 7 days a week. I love this thing. Appreciate you hanging. 🤘
Thanks, great to have you around. I do have a couple of desk setup videos. They’re in the business mindset/minimalism playlist…something like that. It’s always evolving.
Would be nice to have a fresher video on the slow storage and heat topics. I am hopeful that Apple made some simple internal changes to the base model within a few months since it was released.
Appreciate the feedback. I do use this daily. I just haven’t performed any creative tasks on it. I’m currently utilizing about 28GBs of swap memory, but this is mostly due to Safari with about 100 tabs and also the fact that it hasn’t been restarted in something like three months or so.
@@KevinRossRN A 100 tabs?! Never had such a large number of tabs :). I am a PC user, however I did own an MBA mid-2011 which had an i7/4GB/256GB and I had it for 6 years before selling it. The main task I was performing on it, was the GarageBand program. A few days ago I bought a new MBA M2 the base model for the price of M1 base($800) to run the GarageBand and hope it would be sufficient to run a few music tracks including voice.
Oh it should be fine for that use case. Have you had a chance to take it for a spin? Yeah, because I rarely restart my devices (it’s the beauty of MacOS) I end up accumulating tabs and other apps being open. It’s still very responsive even with that memory swap.
@@KevinRossRN Still sitting in the shipping box. With almost Christmas around, had no time to test it out. I guess for simple tasks I will use the Mac, for others will use my HP Workstation :) You have some good, informative videos which deserve some credit!
Yeah, I can definitely understand where you’re coming from. Appreciate you taking the time to be here. I hope that once you get a chance to test it out that it serves you well. I have a feeling that it will 😉 Glad to help where I can and I’m sure I’ll have some updates coming to the channel.
Hey Kevin. I have a surface laptop with 8gb memory and 256gb ssd. I'm currently using 237gb with 172 gb free. Can I stick to 256gb ssd on the m2 or should I upgrade? Thanks
do you think my everyday workflow of 15 internet tabs and like 2 excel and words office.......can the base model handle it easy or they will be like at the fulll capacity already?? i dont want to spend if not necessary but dont want to be at the full caapcity since i want to stay with the computer for like 3-5 years atleast
Bought the MBA M2 8/16/512 for $1499 at the educator price and sold the $150 gift card it came with for $100. So all in at $1399. Sounds like a no brainer to me and blows my 2013 MBP away obviously. But no I wouldn't upgrade if I already had the M1.
I was in dilemma at which MacBook Air M2 variant to choose. I mostly need for government office work, music & web surfing. After watching video, I think base model is more than enough for it. Thank for help 😊.
The space gray isn’t nearly as bad, very subtle compared to the midnight. And as far as scuffing, I haven’t seen this yet and I do have the space gray in the 14 inch which I’ve been using daily with multiple peripherals (plugging and unplugging) and so far, it’s held up. I have the silver upgraded version and that of course is the least as far as showing finger prints.
Informative and balanced review as always. Thanks Kevin! As a side question, I’m thinking of learning FCP, any advice on resources/courses to learn it?
Well, I have the 14 Max, so it stomps that battery. But the M1 pro would be a bit more of challenge. Day to day the M2 will beat it out because if you’re doing the same things (not heavy workload), then the M1 Pros fans aren’t kicking on and it’s primarily using the efficiency cores.
Well, I’ve heard all of the complaints against the base model M2 air and well…I decided to go with it in large measure because upgrading it is ghastly expensive! On the other hand, I am coming from an 2020 Intel MacBook Pro base model and I must say the M2 Air base is by itself an amazing upgrade from that. The M2 DOES NOT heat up performing similar tasks like the Intel machine would. I am a happy customer but then my baseline is not the M1 machine (which I could very easily have purchased too, but I preferred the M2). The objections to the base M2 haven’t meant squat to me and my usage. I am a very happy customer. Everybody enjoy their machines!
And if you came from the Intel based machine then you definitely experienced the leap in performance, low power and battery life. Really glad to hear you’re enjoying it, friend. 🤘
i actually ended up sending my m2 air back i had a really weird issue where the screen would turn green an the computer would shut off. i never did anything intensive just photo editing in pixelmator pro
Yikes! That sounds like a hardware issue. I would think 🤷♂️ Bummer though. Are you just going to be hanging tight for now waiting on some future updates?
@@KevinRossRN im just going to hold out. i have a lenovo legion 5 with a rtx 3070 and a m1 mac mini. hey do you know of a good photo editing program for windows thats not adobe ?
I got mine 16gb/256 from apple. The next day, it would go to sleep and would not wake up. Called apple tech support, they tried to fix it and said that they could see my mouse moving and keys working but the screen remained black. They advised me to return it which I did.
Well, I have to say that I haven’t been using my iPad very much lately…really not at all at the moment. I’d go M2, but try to upgrade memory if possible.
For those out there that are on a budget? But you need great bang for your bucks? There are Refurbished 14 & 16 inch M1 Pro/Max Laptops! If the stock holds? I'm going for the 14" 10c/16g/16GB/1TB SSD by Labor Day '22... and trading in my 13" M1 MBP base model.
Students should focus on studies, books, clubs, and friends. Getting a M1 is amazing for uni students. Plus, there's $ to be spent on HUBS, maybe a bag, and of course, APPS. In 12 months, the M2 will be $1000 (there's history of Apple doing this after the big change). Good luck, students. Focus on passing and getting laid. Don't let the tech stuff bother ya.
Enough vs Better are two different things. I mean, by your logic, iPhone 8 is “enough” for most people for normal use. But if you are spending premium on the latest iPhone, you’d expect it to be “better”. When a new Apple product is released, people expect it to be “better” than what it replaced, especially if it costs 20% more. M2 MBA failed that compared to M1 MBA. Hence the reason people are upset. Had Apple shipped with 2 x 128GB SSDs installed, I suspect we wouldn’t have any of this issue. But they didn’t and that’s greedy.
Appreciate you weighing in here. As far as the SSD, since this is the biggest elephant in the room, I think even if it was on par with the M1, there would still be a concern that this a more of a packaging upgrade rather than raw performance. Which is why I stated that the M1 is going to do everything day-to-day that the M2 will do, and indicating that you don’t need me to help justify the price difference because you just want the M2. But on that note of better, this is also where I think consumers will be confused in that M2 must be better than M1. M1 is “old” tech and the M2 being new must be a leap forward, although that is if you take years of the Intel tick tock model in that these performance gains are going to be incremental, at least until 3nm is being offered. But going back to the packaging. Aside from some camera improvements and the packaging, that iPhone 8 (let’s say iPhone SE2 for a better comparison since it’s in the same packaging as the 8)…this device, what’s under that non 120Hz display glass is on par with the day-to-day performance (not synthetic benchmarks) as the 13 Pro. But we may be splitting hairs at this point. The “enough” part was really about stating that for those that were looking for a creative pro machine replacement would likely be disappointed. Time is everything, and for a creative professional you just traded time for packaging, however for a student or corporate/office professional the M1 is going to continue to fly for quite some time, but the M2 as bad as the headlines are is still also very capable for that work. It’s just a matter as to whether the bump in price is justified because this is historically Apple’s pipeline to use hardware that was a cycle or two behind when they were using Intel.
Yes, the base is fine and the speed although lower than the M1 base, is really moot for most buyers. It will maybe irritate the 5-10% techies that buy the Air for purposes it is not really targeted at, but for those buying the Air M2 the base will be enough. I checked my disk speed during a normal day Office stuff) and it rarely gets above 1Mb/s, usually kb/s speeds, so even 1.4Gb/s is pretty much wasted on me. I do not have a work flow where I am running any pro apps and then skipping through tabs constantly every second or so; does anyone really do that (Max Tech)? So, my M2 has had zero slowdowns, though I do monitor RAM due to some websites having bad memory leaks. e.g. RUclips can in a day have RAM cache topping 1.5GB! So I do purge RAM cache to keep it all running smoothly, and stopping that swap, as that will degrade storage cells over time. But for those that insist on running pro apps on a fanless Mac whilst multitasking, then you probably better get 16GB of RAM as you will clearly need it. Do not upgrade the storage instead, as that is totally illogical, unless you need more storage, then get the extra RAM as well. Good video by the way.
Thanks for your time on hanging out with us here. I think the tough “pill” to swallow is the use of average consumer, or the 5-10%. Creators on the platform often get pushback with those terms as it seems we’re insinuating that the average consumer is less than, or doesn’t count. I agree that most aren’t going to even realize these limitations that we (on the platform) create by pushing the machine beyond what it was originally intended. I’ve often found myself in an Apple store because we do corporate buying, and even though most of that happens online, I still pop over to pick up devices and when doing so, I just observe visually and overhear many of the customers in there talking about getting a device that fits the need of “most.” With no question about RAM or SSD, although some will ask about bumping the internal storage as they have little interest in keeping up with an external solution. I also believe there’s this idea that because of the price, it should do so much more for that bump in price. This is just Apple recouping some of those R&D dollars and essentially understanding (as they often do) that there’s a target market, even in this economy. Anyway, a bit of rambling on my part. Again, thanks for your time.
@@KevinRossRN An average consumer is a function of statistics, not meant as demeaning to those falling within that group. It is a way for OEMs to decide what a certain demographic needs, aided by research and customer feedback. The techie community are known as the outliers, and Apple cannot dictate to the smaller group just because they are the loudest. As for the price, this is almost unfair in these times to take a swipe at any supplier, as the world is in an extraordinary economic perfect storm. Apple is no doubt aware of this, hence the M1 Air remaining as the value option. Again consumers decide and Apple has been more than fair here. Thanks for your thoughts and although I feel that this SSD "issue" has been blown out of all proportion, that techie community was always going to go OTT, so was to be expected!
Nail on the head my friend. Agree that this is the metric that Apple is measuring against. And the M1, as tired as everyone may be when it comes to hearing about it, is still very relevant.
well articulated, love this video. on a side note, i find it so ironic that not so long ago, everyone and their mother was lauding apple with the release of the m1 mba, and today seemingly everyone is crucifying them for the m2 mba. what a difference an additional $200 makes. tho that being said, nerfing the ssd on the base model and not saying a thing about it was absolutely unforgiveable and distasteful, and apple should be held accountable.
Agreed! I wrote a similar comment and then realised you have the same thoughts as I do!
That’s awesome to hear, and yes, a big jump from that 2013…I would bet. 😉
Glad to you popped over on this one. 🤘
After you install your base apps - how much SSD space is left over?
And I always appreciate your time here, friend. Great to see you and thankful to have you weigh in.
The Air isn’t meant to be a workhorse. It’s a casual computer for casual users. If you need more power and RAM, spend more money.
The 3nm tech is on hold while the Blender results are folded into the design. Placeholder, you nailed that one!
Yep, a fantastic piece of kit, and I plan to use it for awhile, but definitely a placeholder. We would have been fine with M1, but the optics called for something to build some fresh excitement until the next “innovation.”
Thanks for this. Nicely put, level headed commentary.
Appreciate it friend. Just looking for the balance on this one.
I just think it's crazy how this is a base model yet we continue to compare it to top of the line models that should be enough for you to know the base model is more than likely enough
I agree. But, many in the community want to know. That being said however, I do really like this M2. I use it daily for most tasks.
@@KevinRossRN yeah this, and many other, were very helpful in helping me decide if i should fork over more money. Ultimately decided if people are pushing this base model to those limits and still being able to get work done, my essays and web browsing is nothing to this thing haha
Ha! Yes, you are going to be just fine. 😉🤘
Hi, I'm running about 15 to 20 internet tabs (youtube, multiple google drives), as long as telegram, email and an anti detect browser with about 10-20 sessions. I also do some light video editing from time to time
Is the base model enough for it or should I get an uppgrade ?
Do you have the budget for the extra memory or would it be a stretch?
It’s in the National Cancer Institute section over on Unsplash: unsplash.com/photos/zoFbfT0M_BU
Again, not the most uplifting visual when you know what it is, but I’m very much a science nerd.
I'm too much confused between
14 inch Macbook Pro and iMac 16GB RAM 512GB SSD
For professional 4K editing for Wedding and RUclips
But here in my city I often face electricity issue so MBP is a better choice but people say iMac is best for professional video editing. And I'll be needing a monitor if I purchase MBP 14"
So what do you say about this?
@@KevinRossRN Thinking to give my self 16GB and 512GB macmini with 4K monitor and MBP 16" in the future
❤❤ thanks for response
Well alrighty then. Best of luck.
I’ve had to get creative with them being home during the day for the summer 😉
And, really awesome that your M2 is taking over.
I can usually add a LUT and some plug-ins, but then when I do more grading and another LUT added this is when I start to see it’s reluctance 🤣
But if the rumors are true for a 15 inch MBA…oh boy. It’s going to be even tougher.
Appreciate you sharing this perspective.
@@KevinRossRN Thanks Kevin, keep up the great work. I always enjoy your work!
And I very much appreciate you. I know there’s a variety of content here outside of the Apple space, but certainly enjoy when you have time/interest to make it over here.
Good job. Probably the best review yet of the MBA.
Many thanks. I’ll be here all night. 😉
Appreciate your time.
Hey Kevin. Thanks for your great video.
I'm a programmer. Which you think is better for me?
Macbook pro 13.3 M1 8/256 or macbook air m2 8/256.
Do you think you’ll be running any virtual machines for testing?
@@KevinRossRN I think not. Because I have windows PC. But if I wanna run a virtual machine on my mac, I'll do that on a external SSD.
Yeah, just keep in mind that a virtual machine will eat up as much RAM as it can. Definitely possible to run a VM on the external, which is what I do.
@@KevinRossRN Oh yeah. So now you think which mac is better for me?
Personally I’d save some cash with the M1 and upgrade the memory.
@@KevinRossRN thanks man I really appreciate your help ✊🏼
I still have 1.5 months left to decide but I think you’ve helped me choose the Mac mini. Now I just have to find a decent monitor haha
Ha! Well the monitors are a whole different animal. Depending on the size there are definitely some decent ones for the price.
I’ve been using the M2 MBA daily…like 7 days a week. I love this thing.
Appreciate you hanging. 🤘
This review was exactly what I was looking for! Also work in healthcare and looking for a daily beater
Really glad I was able to provide some help. Thanks for being here. I’m still using the M2🤘
Great video man! Well put together. New to your channel. Do you have a desk setup video?
Thanks, great to have you around. I do have a couple of desk setup videos. They’re in the business mindset/minimalism playlist…something like that.
It’s always evolving.
I just got my m2 and I love it so much
That’s awesome to hear. It is a fun little device. 🤘
I have a feeling that it will 😉
Glad to help where I can and I’m sure I’ll have some updates coming to the channel.
Love the comedic analogies.
They often seem like dad jokes, but hey, I try 🤷♂️😎
Hey Kevin. I have a surface laptop with 8gb memory and 256gb ssd. I'm currently using 237gb with 172 gb free. Can I stick to 256gb ssd on the m2 or should I upgrade? Thanks
I mean if you have 172GBs free then it seems like your utilization is low. Would your workflow change on the MBA?
@@KevinRossRN Thanks for the reply. And not really to be honest. I only plan to upload my iPhone photos into my computer about 406
Well then it sounds like it might meet your needs based on your use case. 🤘
do you think my everyday workflow of 15 internet tabs and like 2 excel and words office.......can the base model handle it easy or they will be like at the fulll capacity already?? i dont want to spend if not necessary but dont want to be at the full caapcity since i want to stay with the computer for like 3-5 years atleast
Yes. You’ll be swapping with the browser, but you’re not going to notice day-to-day. It’ll be great.
Excellent for your help
Thanks. And I appreciate you being here.
Bought the MBA M2 8/16/512 for $1499 at the educator price and sold the $150 gift card it came with for $100. So all in at $1399. Sounds like a no brainer to me and blows my 2013 MBP away obviously. But no I wouldn't upgrade if I already had the M1.
Oh a little price hacking. Nice!
And agree that the M2 is quite a jump over that 2013. You must be flying now. 😉
Where did you get deal?
Sounds like it was the education deal Apple was running. However, it seems like Amazon is continuing to run deals on this M2.
I was in dilemma at which MacBook Air M2 variant to choose. I mostly need for government office work, music & web surfing.
After watching video, I think base model is more than enough for it. Thank for help 😊.
It definitely is. Happy to help.
will space grey macbook air suffer from fingerprints, smudges and port scuffing too?
The space gray isn’t nearly as bad, very subtle compared to the midnight. And as far as scuffing, I haven’t seen this yet and I do have the space gray in the 14 inch which I’ve been using daily with multiple peripherals (plugging and unplugging) and so far, it’s held up.
I have the silver upgraded version and that of course is the least as far as showing finger prints.
@@KevinRossRN thanks
You bet. Best of luck.
Informative and balanced review as always. Thanks Kevin!
As a side question, I’m thinking of learning FCP, any advice on resources/courses to learn it?
Thanks! As far as FCPX, have you seen the videos from Ripple Training?
@@KevinRossRN no, but I will check them out. Thank you!
You bet. 👍
Sending you all my best. That's the comment. Now go rock those faces 🤘
How does the battery feel vs the 14 in pro?
I would think 🤷♂️
Bummer though. Are you just going to be hanging tight for now waiting on some future updates?
@@KevinRossRN im just going to hold out. i have a lenovo legion 5 with a rtx 3070 and a m1 mac mini. hey do you know of a good photo editing program for windows thats not adobe ?
Gotcha. Affinity photo would be the next best thing…maybe even better. There’s also Luminar.
That RTX 3070 should hold you on those.
I got mine 16gb/256 from apple. The next day, it would go to sleep and would not wake up. Called apple tech support, they tried to fix it and said that they could see my mouse moving and keys working but the screen remained black. They advised me to return it which I did.
1.BASE AIR M1+ IPAD 9 th gen = 1400 dollar
2. BASE AIR M2 = 1300 dollar
which is better deal?which one you will chose?
Well, do you really need or want an iPad?
@@KevinRossRN nope. Just asking randomly
Well, I have to say that I haven’t been using my iPad very much lately…really not at all at the moment.
I’d go M2, but try to upgrade memory if possible.
I get my m2 mba 8gb/256gb ssd on june 27. Plan to use it to surf the web so i think it should be more than enough
Surfing the web should be just fine.
The deals on those 14 inch MBPs are quite nice if I do say so myself.😉🤘
Students should focus on studies, books, clubs, and friends. Getting a M1 is amazing for uni students. Plus, there's $ to be spent on HUBS, maybe a bag, and of course, APPS. In 12 months, the M2 will be $1000 (there's history of Apple doing this after the big change). Good luck, students. Focus on passing and getting laid. Don't let the tech stuff bother ya.
Yes, the M1 is still very much a capable contender for students, and definitely what I would personally choose for my kids once they are headed off.
I just want to surf the web and watch movies. The base model should be fine right?
Yep. It’ll crush those tasks.
Cost too much, too many crippling features , will pass, peace out...
Peace out ✌️
