Have the same one from KC, and was gonna say my lock is extremely strong as well and i dont have that problem. Awesome knife. Just wanted to post this so people know! And ya i think he just got a bad apple thats all
Got that one too. Nice little knife. I didn't realize there was anything special about the steel when I bought it. The lock seems fine. Have the Feldspar too in D2, but they have them in AR-RPM9 and I'm considering getting one. Very appealing steel with what seem like multiple advantages.
I've seen several people have the same locking issue with the CRKT CEO which has drawn me away from buying one. Faulty locks are really something you hate to see.
I love my Ria, haven't had any lock problems. Definitely a defect, appreciate the review and showing that if you have bad Quality Control it can be dangerous. Great review and nice to read the Artisan Service and support is A+.

@@birdlaw1019 i was able to loosen the screws on the whole knife and push the left scale down and the right one upward both at the same time and with the other hand tightened the screws and that brought the lock down enough that it was able to engage the tang
I like all your videos, but this one was particularly well done. Great balance Pete with edge, toughness, real life, music, montage, and being weird. I have no interest in the knife or the steel but none the less I was entertained and gained knowledge. Keep up the great work buddy. You’re my favorite knife guy by far. Also I have never seen or heard of bagged box water. You guys are weird over there but I’ll allow it.
Mine had the lock issue too. I took it apart and cleaned it and it felt like there was a tiny burr on the lock bar. Haven't had issues since, but haven't used it much either.
I have a few slender knives. I say they have a small footprint in the pocket because I am a fan of longer blades. For example, my only CJRB is the Briar. The quality of its build has got me thinking of buying more of that brand. It cost a whopping $34 (U.S.) Thanks for the edge testing & I'll be watching for any lock issues but after 7 months mine is good. Steel is D2.
Out of the around thirty folders I have,my cjrb is the most inexpensive, but the build quality is really second to none,(the build quality, not the materials or design),and as far as flipping action,it's just got this satisfying 'clthuhk'that maybe only a couple of my other flippers have.I use mine mainly as a steak knife, and it holds a decent edge,(the plates dull a steak knife)
Bought one and had the same issue with the liner lock. Super easy to break down to take a jewelers file to the lock and now the entire liner edge contacts the blade end. Should you have to do this, of course not but I really like the style of this knife with the micarta handle.
I have two Rias. Both locks are perfect but one of them has a really tight detent, turns my thumb into hamburger meat. Granted, it was not designed to be flicked open and closed a hundred times. It is now given to a buddy who is not a knife guy and will use it for what is designed for, a knife instead of a fidget tool.
I had the same experience with the thumb stud cut out. It was destroying my thumb. I went so far as to reshape the cutout and change it to what I felt it should have been done to start with. Looks and feels great now and I can fidget flick all day. If I could post pics here I would.
Nice selection on the cordless power tools. Just picked up a leaf blower and a weedwhacker from Ryobi and have been very impressed with performance (especially battery life).
I have the cheaper version, g-10 and the sandvik steel. Lockup is solid. Action is super nice. My only gripe is I wish they scalloped the handle a bit so you could release the liner lock easier. You won’t find a better knife this style for $23 Murrica dollars.
Pete, have you ever considered adding two nails or screws vertically near the edge of the cutting board so you can put a rubber band between them and run your twisted sisal underneath that? When you set the end down for testing the knife the band would provide friction to keep the end of the rope pretty much in place, but if properly configured I think you'd be easily able to draw it forward with minimal force. With the right fasteners a rubber band might not even be needed, the low angle at which you slide the rope forward as you slice would be parallel to the gap between the board and the heads (T is a nail, o is the rope cross section = ToT). Just my thoughts after watching several of these videos and seeing how disruptive the paper slicing appears to me as a viewer. Love your hard work and thought this contribution was worth my time to type; hope it helps or at least doesn't offend. (I have no idea how many suggestions you get to improve your process and do imagine it gets tiresome.)
The pandemic has been hard on Pete. We found him talking to a wall. On a side note, feels like it’s been a good minute since we got to watch you do a rope test with that sweet sweet JRPG music going in the background. Good stuff man!
My feldspar has been excellent holding an edge without the edge folding or chipping during normal cutting task and cardboard processing. I am not experienced enough with some of these newer steels yet but so far it appears to be on par with VG10 and D2. Haven't gotten it dull enough to know if it surpasses those two.
Yeah the thin knives are much more convenient. I'm looking at the Kizer Latt Vind for that reason. I think I would push that lockbar over a little bit for peace of mind.
My Ria in Jade also has a lock that doesn’t stay lock if you push on it much. Bought it a year ago and mostly excuse it as a dress knife these days. As a Northern New Englander, I don’t really feel it is heavy enough or beefy enough to be perfect edc tool. The Ria is a nice looking and somewhat well designed ( outside of the lock issues) piece.
Better luck than my CRKT CEO flipper. I'm having issues getting it to deploy. Waiting to hear back from them. Man I was so excited for that knife. And I looks like they put proprietary screws on the pivot screw that they striped during assembly.
I've been looking for a decent budget edc knife. Not one for self defense, im American and if i feel like im in a dire situation i concealed carry a handgun(hope I never have to use). Just for general cutting and utility. Is their proprietary metal a decent choice? Im currently looking their amazon gobi in that metal.
I thought you gave up steel testing, glad to see I was wrong! And glad to see that steel doing well, as somebody who likes budget knives but hates d2 - the ar rpm9 looks to be pretty solid!
Thanks for the reviews Pete, you and Rocky are aces. Glad to see you review the AR-RPM9 steel, as I've got the Maileah and was curious to what this steel would actually perform like. Enjoy your weekend.
Yeah.. mine has that lock issue too. If I flick it open it’s fine but if I slow open it the lock definitely will fail. Hopefully they will fix that in future runs.
How does the pressure feel when pushing the lock back over to unlock it? I wonder if the smaller spring area on narrower liner locks gives them less pressure to push themselves into a lock position all other tolerances being equal. Maybe they need to use thicker liner locks if that's the case to compensate.
I just got done watching you a to z steel list and, I don't know how hard it would be for you to get but, I want to see you test a Winkler knife with his 80crV2. He says when he finds a better steel, he'll use it. I love my Winkler Blue Ridge Hunter. It's tough, great edge, easy to sharpen to a scary edge. Please, somehow do this one.
I have the CJRB large feldspar and centros. I love them both. I feel they are both great budget blades. Even better quality than my civivi's. I also like D-2 they use. It's never rusted and takes a noice edge. Especially on my new Work sharp precision sharpener I just got from DLT. I highly recommend CJRB. Just not this knife with that lock. We are all entitled to and make mistakes. They should just recall them. That lock design is set flawed.
had a civivi chronic for a few weeks now, really cool budget edc knife, and carrier extremely nicely in pocket when i saw the lock fail i was like " whut? Is that a slip joint? "
My lock slips too. If you flick it open it's fine but if you slow open it appears to lock but slips out with the slightest pressure. Its a shame, good looking knife but I don't trust it enough to do more than open letters.

Pete, a little off topic, but I want a "yes new materials" , hoodie in anything other than white so bad I can taste it. Any way that will ever happen with t spring. I'm about to make a franken hoodie with a t-shirt. Team Basil. Love the videos.
I luckily haven't run into issues with my Ria's (micarta one as well as the CF one in 12C27)... That's not to say I haven't had my fair share of lock issues with CJRB though. My Feldspar and both of my Centros have pretty egregious lock stick, and my Briar had a bit of the slippy lock like what's depicted here.
AR-RPM9 is basically the chinese 9Cr18MoV with a pinch (0.3%) of cobalt thrown into it presumably to aim for (very slightly) higher tempering temps and squeeze a little more hardness out of it, but I'm kind of skeptical of it really adding much to the materials side of things and more or less so a company can use a 'proprietary steel' in their products. Because that's what all the cool kids do in mass manufacturing... or they just got a good deal on it from some large factory brewing up a few tonnes of it on the side of their 9Cr18MoV production.
I picked up the Ria shortly after it released and it had lock/detent issues that were so bad that it was immediately returned. My observation is that CJRB/Artisan has more QA issues overall than their competitors and your experience would seem to bear this out.
i have wasted too much money on other knives. i thought i was done when i got my Steel Will Mini Intrigue in G10 M390. Then i couldn’t pass up the BladeHQ exclusive CRKT CEO in green micarta and D2. bought two of those in fact.that slim gentlemanly profile is soo appealing. BUT in use they are very very lack luster. a slim flipper just has the cool factor. i sold one CRKT and just ordered a spyderco ikuchi. the issue of getting stuck open from the liner lock is awful. the ikuchi has the tried and true compression lock AND its a flipper. im getting rid of everything except my vintage stuff. keeping my Manix2 G10 S30V and the Ikuchi in carbon fiber and S30V. this hobby is weird and fun but now i know why the spyderco hype is strong and long running. just my 2cents. peace everyone ✌️
It seems you have a plan in place, but if you like the ceo, try the boker urban trapper. In titanium liners with cocobolo or cf scales. Vg10 blade. Love mine. It's a great lightweight edc. Not out of place at a restaurant or wedding cutting your steak
Beno3000 J been carrying the ikuchi for a bit now. wish i went with it when i first was interested in gentlemans knives. 9/10 because the detent to open it is a bear and will likely take a while to break in. spyderco forever
At least you did get a nice meal! As Artisan Cutlery stated unfortunately you've gotten a knife with a defetive lock. For a thin budget knife i think its worth the money.
Pete, isn't it time that you maybe fix the knife lab table to stop the wobbling? I'm surprised it seemingly doesn't annoy you^^ Great video, as always!
Lock on mine is good. I think yours needs more engagement. You could grind a little bit off the end of the lock to increase engagement. It's not good that you should have to do that though
Prepare for my usual 'comment while watching' nasty habit to kick in: Love the artwork you did. You should ask your kids to do a Knife Lab painting. mmmmm Micarta... In the vein of many a past Australian game show, "IT'S A NEW STEEEL!" And in the vein of an old one-hit wonder, "Skinny knives, skinny knives, skinny knives, skinny knives, I love 'em I love 'em I love 'em I love 'em" Oh, oooops. That's a bit dangerous. A focking lolding knife should work like a focking lolding knife. I tend to over-sharpen my thin blades (Opinel 7 higonokami etc). They end up face-shaving sharp...so long as I don't use them for anything else. 250 is pretty good. And being stainless steel, that's great. Poor bricky. So old, so Marvin. Yes, I still use my Field Sharpener to sharpen my knives. My 2 bench sharpeners languish in the cupboard. Cutting cheese for the win! My Omelette recipe (just the egg part): First, pre-cook and prep your omelette innards and set aside. Separate the yolks and whites of three eggs. Whip the whites until they are foaming. Not merengue stiff, but just peaking. Beat the yolks and very gently fold the yolk into the foamed whites. Get your pan hot and oiled or whatever and gently pour and spread this mix into the pan. Let the bottom set a bit then add grated cheese to one half and your filling to the other. Cover the pan for a minute or so depending on how hot your pan is. You should see the egg white and yolk mixture rise a little. Uncover and fold in half as best you can. If you're successful your omelette will be about 3cm thick and the egg part should collapse in yumminess when you get it in your mouth, allowing you to savour the innards. Annnnd you made scrambled eggs...(told you I comment while watching) Are you auditioning for the remake of Magnum PI with that big moustache? Thus endeth the comment commentary.
Been really enjoying my Ria with micarta, a lot. Blade really holds a sharp edge for a good while. Luckily my sample doesn't have the lock failing issue. The company should have stopped at CJ and left the two other letter out. CJ Knives sounds better. Would love to see the AR-RPM9 steel on all their budget knives.
Boy the two AR-RPM9 Knives I've had were both soft and scratched with my O1 scratcher hardness testers at 56-57. A Crag I got by accident, ordered D2 and a Scoria. This steel is coming in all over the place on YT testing including an analysis of the steel by Luvthemknives Batch 38 that didn't include three elements listed for the steel, Cobalt, Silicon and Nickel. They were listed at such low amounts they're useless so I don't know why they bother to list them at all. It's basically 9Cr17MoV.
I have the Crag in the same steel and have the opposite issue with the liner lock. It almost hits the other side of the knife. I guess a better issue to have than yours even though it destroys any fidget fun
I been upset with the China Jiang Ren Blade company for a bit over a pesky CS issue they've now made good on (yay!) ... But this one has been tempting me ever since it came out just from a design standpoint. An interesting blend of design and materials trade-offs to keep pricing in a reasonable area.
Thank you so much for taking a look at our new steel! And that slippy lock is definitely something that we would view as defective, if you're interested we would be more than happy to send you a new Ria.

i have wasted too much money on other knives. i thought i was done when i got my Steel Will Mini Intrigue in G10 M390.
Not out of place at a restaurant or wedding cutting your steak

been carrying the ikuchi for a bit now. wish i went with it when i first was interested in gentlemans knives. 9/10 because the detent to open it is a bear and will likely take a while to break in. spyderco forever
At least you did get a nice meal! As Artisan Cutlery stated unfortunately you've gotten a knife with a defetive lock. For a thin budget knife i think its worth the money.
LMFAO! Love that scene from deuce bigalow
Love your reviews
Pete, isn't it time that you maybe fix the knife lab table to stop the wobbling? I'm surprised it seemingly doesn't annoy you^^
Great video, as always!
i need to build a new table, and i need to do it down there cos not much fits down the hatch
@@CedricAda ohhh right, didn't think about that
Lock on mine is good. I think yours needs more engagement. You could grind a little bit off the end of the lock to increase engagement. It's not good that you should have to do that though
Hey my friend, please bring brickie back! Rockie is cool but he needs some love lol! Love your vids brother!
Oh wow I caught this one early. Live your vids Pete! Love pete
Great entertaining review as per usual!
This knife can make a good egg and sausage omelet so it is a great knife...
Prepare for my usual 'comment while watching' nasty habit to kick in:
Love the artwork you did. You should ask your kids to do a Knife Lab painting.
mmmmm Micarta...
In the vein of many a past Australian game show, "IT'S A NEW STEEEL!"
And in the vein of an old one-hit wonder, "Skinny knives, skinny knives, skinny knives, skinny knives, I love 'em I love 'em I love 'em I love 'em"
Oh, oooops.
My Omelette recipe (just the egg part):
First, pre-cook and prep your omelette innards and set aside.
Annnnd you made scrambled eggs...(told you I comment while watching)
Are you auditioning for the remake of Magnum PI with that big moustache?
Thus endeth the comment commentary.
Been really enjoying my Ria with micarta, a lot. Blade really holds a sharp edge for a good while. Luckily my sample doesn't have the lock failing issue.
The company should have stopped at CJ and left the two other letter out. CJ Knives sounds better. Would love to see the AR-RPM9 steel on all their budget knives.
Hey Pete would you ever review artisans sea snake fixed blade in rpm9
Great video!
That. Intro scene reminded me of something straight out of Napoleon Dinamite
I’m pretty sure it was a reference to the vine of the guy that says “I love refrigerators!”
It’s the same with my knife on lack of locking strength.
I been upset with the China Jiang Ren Blade company for a bit over a pesky CS issue they've now made good on (yay!) ... But this one has been tempting me ever since it came out just from a design standpoint. An interesting blend of design and materials trade-offs to keep pricing in a reasonable area.
Will a rope manufacturer please sponsor Pete!!?... this dude uses a lot of rope
Where is the JapaKnives review? We need it.
Been waiting to get your thoughts on this new steel!
I assume morphing into an established wall a Type 3 civilisation perk? Cheers! *edit: Although you'd think they'd have better dental :p
a lock-back would be a sturdier design
Can you please review an Eafengrow.
17:35 Gordon Ramsay would like to have a word with you
A box of water?
why is the fly always down...
That lock failure is horific...
Thanks for the in dept review.
Knife unrelated anime question: JoJo? Hunter x Hunter?
I like both but probably hunter a little more
Man what you did at the end of the video to Rockie’s sausage was hard to watch.
