I think we all have a knife purgatory. Mostly consists of knives I completely messed up sharpening when I thought I could be like Ken Onion…. I even bought his sharpworks belt grinder to destroy my knives even faster…… I pretty much inhaled my knives after that. Man what a regretful phase!

TBH, I don't. I have a bench grinder with a pair of stone wheels, a pair of paper wheels, and a cloth wheel, plus a diamond disc on a disc grinder for shaping. I use my knives until they break then I give them a new tip . I guess the closest thing to a knife purgatory I have is my fishing knife box, but I still use them. If I need a new beater I just buy a cheap machete and shape it down to purpose. P.S I did just get a Vanax blade, so we'll see if that retires a few old timers, or at least how long it does

It’s really excellent for clearing vines and weeds, plus harvesting vegetables. Perfectly designed for pull-cutting. The safety tip makes sense, because you can’t effectively use the tip anyway. And like all Opinels, it’s extremely light.

This best of old, shoulda-been iconic Ontario folders in AUS-8 is the 'Utilitac II' designed by Joe Pardue, son of Mel (of Benchmade fame). It's still dirt cheap and outshines the RAT all day. I recently discovered that the Utilitac II was actually pushed to be Ontario's forerunner model after the RAT's designer fell out of favor for some blade world scandal of yesteryear. (He's the R in the RAT acronym).
Love ya, Pete, appreciate the hell outta your channel

This video is so relatable. I have my regular edc knives in a cheap hanging pouch on the wall. The other ones I don't carry are in a spyderpack stuffed away and the ones that don't fit there are thrown in a box in a drawer. And we all keep buying more stuffing more in a drawer. It's a vicious cycle.

    20:00 For shame, Mr. Outdoors!
The Higonokami knife is the single most versatile knife on this fine planet! I have a 7cm Higonokami on the bench next to me as I angrily type. A useless knife? I beg to differ!
For one, it is an excellent toothpick mass-production tool. I cut long skewers into three equal lengths, then fashion toothpicks from the blanks. The Higonokami is the best tool for the job.
Further, my Higonokami keeps me occupied for minutes at a time, honing the edge on a ceramic rod to create hair-whittling edges.
Also, the non-locking, gradually loosening pivot makes it ideal for First Aid laceration dressing training, as well as reflex training.
And finally, my great-grandfather had a Higonokami when he lived in the Tanami Desert, and he would regale me with stories of how he hunted, killed, and dressed wild camels with just that very knife. So, no. I must disagree, learned Sir. The Higonokami is even more versatile than my Asobi.

That SOG Terminus XR is a fantastic knife to get as an intro to lots of different knife features for a very reasonable price and good quality at the same time. ~$50 gets you G10 scales, thumb studs, flipper, axis/crossbar lock and a reversible tip-up deep carry clip so righties or lefties are accomdated. So you get three different opening mechanisms, G10 scales and D2 steel on a fully ambidextrous knife for ~$50. And there's an option for S35VN and carbon fiber if you want to go a little higher end. Got one for my son and he loves being able to choose between thumb, flip, or flick to open it.

Very cool, love all your videos bro, keep up the great work, the first real edge retention testing I learned was yours, I have a small paper pad full of information from your videos and testing, my standard for edge retention is still Sisal rope, I watch others do cardboard cutting by the foot, which is fine I suppose, but my go to is still sisal rope, every quality knife I bought or steel I bought I came here first to see if you had done testing and reviews, that means every knife or different steel I have is because of your recommendations, the only ones I have that didn't get your recommendation is knives given to me by friends and family, your channel is a great wealth of information, please keep going, we absolutely do appreciate it and absolutely do use your testing and recommendation for knife buying

Fun Fact: The Opinel 'Pruning Knife' was prototyped as the 'Scrotum Slicer' and was going to be marketed to professional Roo shooters in Australia. Apparently, PeTA got wind of it and convinced Opinel, who had already spent close to a billion dollars in research and development, to rebrand it as a plant pruning blade.
I'll bet you didn't know that little factoid...

That is the No. 8 Pruning Knife. The No. 8 Mushroom knife has a shorter blade with less curvature and a brush on the other end. I think the handles are identical however.
I bought one to be my token hawkbill. On the rare occasion that's something I actually need, it works very well, but the reverse-curvature handle and inability to cut basically anything on a table definitely makes it poorly suited to general utility use.

I love your videos. I've been watching them for a long time. I propose that if you can invest in high quality sharpening equipment, you can invest in a large cigar humidor, that could be stored in your shed area, and still keep the knives in the ideal atmospheric condition.
Bonus all of the likely logical places in which to store the knives, substituted for cigars!
Second bonus for a RUclips content producer to suggest an idea that other knife lovers with prodigious collections might like, and you're welcome to steal it without credit if it works for you.
Even if you only had crappy knives, at a certain number threshold, that's a legitimate monetary investment to protect, let alone for good knives.
I use high quality gun oils to protect the metal of m knives, and that works the very best for me once they are clean and prepped. I used to live 1/4 mi from the ocean and rust was a prodigious problem for my non stainless steel blades if I did not address it proactively. Worth a shot?
    -Cheers

-The knife is attractive, but not particularly useful. An Impulse purchase!
-The (expensive) knife features premium scales, blade, mirror polished surfaces, rare wood, and or gem stone inlays or unique hardware, etc, I'M AFRAID TO SCRATCH, DIRTY , OR LOSE IT!
    -Too large to carry effectively
    - Some knives are super useful, but ugly, or feature weird, loud colors, that I'm not keen to show off
YES, I SADLY WASTE MONEY FREQUENTLY

    Three drawer queens...
Spyderco Yojimbo. That slender tip needs careful handling, and I wasn't careful enough. Broke about 15mm off, now it sits. My fault, not Spyderco's.
CRKT M21. Uncomfortable in hand, hate the pocket clip, which is forever snagging on things, and maybe I got a bad batch of steel but it won't stay sharp worth a damn.
Kershaw Rake. I loved this knife at first, but then I discovered that the slightest tap on the spine would cause the lock to fail. I could quite literally force failure with my little finger. Yeah nah, into the drawer it went.

I never really liked Kershaw knives, I've always found them to be just…meh; not bad but nothing that sets them apart from anyone else. That said, I've seen a few different M390 comparison between Lionsteel, Benchmade, Spyderco and a few others. I was REALLY surprised to find in all of them that Kershaw's M390 had the highest HRC out of all of them. It wasn't a negligible amount either, a couple were up past 63 when Spyderco came in second as 61. So they have that going for them.

There was at least 3 or 4 in that bunch that I wouldn’t mind carrying. The rest were pretty meh and I get why they are in the shed.

Do you think you were being a bit harsh with regards to the good ole' K-Bar Dozier? They're cheap and cheerful and last for years with regular daily use (e.g. warehousing). Simplicity itself to touch up with the (equally cheap and cheerful Lansky 4-rod Turn Box) they still sell well and nobody's going to be weeping into his cornflakes if he loses one.
