- Different types of Bamboos I talk about in this video:
1) Phyllostachys vivax aureocaulis. Leans over.
2)Phyllostachys aureosulcata aureocaulis. Good for screening.
3) Fargesia nitida. Clump forming - best behaved.
4) Sasa palmata. Avoid!
5) Pseudosasa japonica. Avoid!

Came here for information about my two favourite bamboos, both Sasa, haha. For me japonica and palmata are the most exotic looking bamboos. I'm really not doing well looking for some confirmation bias to keep them in the ground.

i like the timber bamboo. i have ben growing it for 10 years. i have a large patch of it that i keep cleared out enough that you can walk through like a small forest. so far they get about the size of your uper arm and as tall as 30 to 40 feet. bamboo is an amazing and beautiful plant. i hope one day to have my entire property , all 5 acres covered in timber bamboo with my house in the middle. i live in the deep south in the U.S.i live in the country surounded by forest with no other houses with in several miles. and while it will grow ok here it grows very slow from year to year. each year i get about 40 new shoots and thats all. still i would not take anything for my bamboo.
Hi, Chris... I live in the south also in a remote area but not as remote as you. Prior to living in Appalachia, I lived in Fort Lauderdale. I would go on walks through the neighborhood and there was one house that had a huge stand of bamboo of the sort you wrote about. The stalks were very huge in height and also in girth. What I found so thrilling was the sound of the stalks colliding in a wind. Such a very comforting sound... Nature's gift to our senses. Thank you for your post as it brought back such wonderful memories.

nice im looking for some bamboo for shade mostly to put it in a large potter in the back porch and provide shade with maybe a hieight of 12 ft and that leans or arches so my birds cages and my coffee table can go under it. i like to think of runners as underground vines .

Great information; thanks. I'm looking for a clumping bamboo that grows very tall 30 to 40 feet or higher. I live in east Texas near Jacksonville with iron red clay soil but good irrigation. Can you tell me what variety of clumping bamboo I can use??

Oh no :( I've just bought some pseudosasa japonica and it wasn't cheap either. It was to go against a huge 3m breeze block wall. Not sure what to do now...

Hi John, great video, I have two Phyllostachys aurea bamboos in very large containers, what is the best fertiliser for them, the leaves are now turning papery thin and yellow.
MrUniman69 you may have planted it to deep in the soil. Bamboo plantings to best with a "mound planting " basicly a mound of dirt above the actual level ground.
Nitrogen fertilizer is best.. I recommend organic Mushroom compost.
Both those Sasa Bamboos were planted in the garden of an old house we bought. We had a forest!
I have arrow bamboo in garden if check running roots they not that in deep ground you can stop running roots go to big bamboo check everytime in my garden
Can I line the hole in which I'm planting the bamboo with landscaping fabric and keep it from spreading ?

Thanks for the information. You didn't comment on root barriers though?
Root barriers do work to a point, if installed properly. An entire clump can get congested if totally surrounded by a root barrier because there is nowhere for the new fresh shoots to go.

Bamboo is the worst idea ever. If I ever moved (just to get away from the bamboo here) I would never ever buy a house that had bamboo or even if the neighbor had bamboo.
