  • I've had a few people wanting me to review these entry-level "arranger" style keyboards from Yamaha, so here is the YPT-270. It is visually very similar to the PSR-E273, which I have had some requests to review, so seeing as this is basically the same thing but in silver I hope you enjoy this video.

I think I’m going to buy this keyboard. It’s a great value with still good quality. Thank you for this excellent tutorial and review friend.

As long as it has touch sensitivity, it's a good instrument

I own a far Predecessor of these Keyboards. The Yamaha PSR-170 from ~2000 which also shares a lot of these teaching functions. Just yesterday when it was Christmas Eve in Germany when I was at my Grandmas home, I found out that they still had it laying around. I just recently started playing Keyboard again and discovered that I still can play Für Elise by memory relatively fluent with both hands thanks to this Keyboard even though I haven't played Piano for over 11 years. Für Elise was the first lesson track on the PSR-170. I guess I will never forget how to play it.
I first started with playing the flute in 2nd Grade but figured soon that it just wasn't the right instrument for me. The PSR-170 got me interested in playing a real acoustic piano which I later did when I was in the 4th Grade. At the beginning of the 4th Grade I had personal Piano lessons and Orff concerts with my German lessons teacher until the end of the 6th Grade and played concerts. Then I had to switch from primary school which was very musically oriented to secondary school, where they offered no piano teachings from the 7th grade. I hated secondary school since I was bullied a lot, hated most of my classmates and almost failed secondary school due to it. Only in the 8th Grade I could continue playing on a Grand piano but it just wasn't the same as with my German lessons teacher from 4th to 6th grade, because there was no personal teachings and showing which techniques are correct and didn't really learn anything new. Just accompanying group play. I missed having personal coaching. After that I went into an 3,5 year long electrician apprenticeship, worked for 2 years as electrician, went back to school for 1 another year so I can go to universities, because I disliked being an electrician (Bad pay and bad working conditions, also don't have the right character for that). Went to uni studying computer engineering and computer science for nearly 4 years, now doing another apprenticeship in the 2nd year as a Drupal/TYPO3 CMS full-stack developer maintaining websites in Germany and for the European Union (Educational, social, health and public sector most often). It looks like the company will keep me and I like doing my job, have great colleagues and very nice/lenient boss. Didn't play a real piano since I was 16. I'm now 28 and hopefully a bit more grounded in life after being done with my apprenticeship which I'll probably shorten, since I'm doing great.
Now I'm thinking of getting a Kawai ES-110, Yamaha P-125 or Roland FP-30 to continue where I left of and try self-teaching like with almost everything that I do. So far from the looks of it the Kawai ES-110 is my favorite from the looks of it, but due to the lockdown we're currently having, I can't test play them. So I need to wait a bit. That's also how I found your channel and really like your reviews. Even though about 12 years have passed since, I want to re-learn how to sight-read again and play by sheet music. I hope it's not too late.
    Edit: tl;dr:
The PSR-170 helped me in sparking my interest for music and it's absolutely a great investment for any parent that wants to figure out if they can get their kids interested into playing music. It definitely helped me getting a foot in the door in the world of playing the piano.

Love your videos. Even though I might not benefit from all of them, depending on what level of instrument you present, I do appreciate that everyone (beginners or davanced) will hugely benefit from your reviews. Your opinions and comments are coming from a professional who has experienced from the cheapest to the most expensive which is reassuring. Thank you very much and please keep doing what you do best!!!

    James,
They should have you as a consultant because your suggestions and a reasonable increase in price could make that a instrument as well as a learning tool.
I hope you and your family are well and have a wonderful Christmas.

HI James! This is my first comment on your channel, but I wanted to let you know as a fellow classically trained pianist and student from Berklee, I must say that I LOVE your informative videos and channel! It's absolutely fantastic that your opinion is pure and unbiased, which you have held true to, and for that, I thank you so much. It's allowed me to make very informed decisions about the instruments I research and ultimately purchase! If you ever get the chance to get your hands on an Ensoniq, I highly recommend it, as the company is no longer in business, and was (in my opinion) WAY ahead of their time, which makes me think that the company mishandled other business aspects which led to their untimely demise. I personally own the ZR-76, which is INSANELY rare to find, and I purchased back in 1998 brand new. I still use it to this day, and you'll find a video on my page of it in action! Have a blessed holiday, and I look forward to all the great content I'm sure you have in store for the new year!

Interesting instrument you got there. Really good learning abilities and not a bad sound either. Alright not the top maybe but definitely not a high priced instrument. I like it and I know a bunch of people who could appreciate this kind of functionality. Thank you for sharing and playing! (Happy holidays)

Great video....you can use the num lock button...which turns the buttons into a numerical keypad...which means you can go straight to the voice, song or style you want....saves all that pressing 😁👍

The 'Waiting" mode is a feature on the Yamaha EZ-AG Guitar released sometime in the early-mid 2000s. I don't know if this was the first place it was implemented. I do think it's a great feature for beginners.

👌 they did a good job . I can say myself that my true passion for piano developed when I got a digital piano with weighted action and a pedal . Nothing compares to the feeling of an acoustic piano as well . Point of this being if you want to be truly addicted to the piano you should invest as much money as you can into your preference of piano 👌✌️

My friend has one of these, I like playing along on vibraphone and washtub bass to the demo songs. My YPT300 is fun, but this one is actually easier to "jam" with in some ways. Keeping my eye out to add this one to my collection.

These 'teaching' keyboards were indeed around 20 years ago :). The PSR-78, 195, and 225 keyboards of the late 90's introduced the 'Y.E.S.' (Yamaha Education Suite), and it has continued in pretty much all of the entry level PSR and later YPT keyboards since. I'm sure it's much more advanced now though.

Yamaha uses the reverse polarity in it's switch pedals vs most others (casio, roland) so make sure to mention that you need a Yamaha pedal or a pedal with a polarity switch. The Yamaha FC4 will basically only work with Yamaha keyboards (there are always exceptions) but a Yorkville or M-Audio will work with most everything. Not applicable to this piano but Yamaha uses a totally different expression pedal and I have yet to find an inexpensive expression pedal that I can use with my Yamaha equipment and have had to break down and pay for the Yamaha expression pedal which is well built and fantastic quality but not cheap.

merry christmas james I been following you for several years, I have a question for you and or your viewers, Im looking for a way to convert regular audio and or mp3 music(piano) to midi format, I cant find nothing that works right..is there software or some electronics gadget that does this Please let me know---I know you know a lot about music, thanks

    • @47f0
      @47f0 3 года назад +2

Audacity (free download) can output MIDI from most audio files. Bear File Converter (online) also claims to do this (input file size limited to ?? 20 or 30 meg?). Your success rate will vary depending on the composition, a simple piano solo will obviously work better than a bootleg Jimi Hendrix tune. Either way, you may have to do some editing, (and by may I mean almost certainly), but it's a start.

This seems similar to the EZ-220, but does not have a lighted keyboard and touch sensitivity. I did not recognize any of the tunes you played as being included with the EZ-220. However, the EZ-220 does not cost much more than this instrument. You will have to review the forthcoming EZ-300 when it is available.
